Canned Sunshine (a Going Nuclear spinoff/remake)

Interlude 3.4
[Amelia]
I'd been standing under the shower for long enough that the water was beginning to turn cold. Vista had been sitting outside on guard duty, while keeping the door cracked enough that she could maintain the warp allowing me to stand fully under the showerhead. I must have been in here for at least half an hour after Vista and Shade had just sat down with me and allowed me to... let everything out.

I looked at myself in the mirror. It was still recognizably my face, but more... mature I guess? My freckles were gone and my new olive-toned complexion was rather handsome framed by my new silver locks. I looked down at my hands, not pruned at all after being in the water for so long. So strange.

"Everything okay in there Amelia?" Vista called. "You seem awful quiet."

"Taking everything in I guess." I replied as I wrapped a towel around me. "Shit... This towel isn't big enough."

"I AM HERE!" a boisterous new voice called from the Wards main room. "I have food and clothes!"

The sweatpants were comfy, but even 3XL wasn't quite big enough. I'd had to tear the ankle elastic where they were tight around my calves. My shoulders stretched the seams and my new cheese grater abs were peeking out a bit from the bottom of the shirt. The plum color was nice though.

I came out of the bathroom to find Challenger discussing something with Shroud and Shade. The older Ward seemed reluctant about something, but then nodded, eliciting a cheerful jump from his sister that had her hovering for a moment over his shoulder. She then began setting out some of the trays of food before she turned and looked up and down over me.

"So, question for you Amelia. Do you want to stay here tonight? I know there's a spare room back there you can crash on, but I think the bunks are a bit small for you. Or, if you like, you can come with us girls to my place where I've got a California king size bed with a fancy 'TinkerTech' foam mattress for all three of you. Triumph and Gallant will be in from their patrol any minute and honestly these two little munchkins don't want to deal with 'the boooooys' tonight."

"If it isn't any trouble?"

Challenger cackled with glee. "Exxxxxcellent! I also have a fresh carton of triple fudge brownie ice cream in the freezer with your name on it! Come ladies! To the STEAM TUNNELS!"

Wait, what?

A minute later we'd gone down in the elevator into a long access corridor. "This is a secure emergency exit from the building. it goes down about five blocks to an apartment building Armsmaster bought years ago. Supposedly as 'more efficient' than having to commute. Not many of the grunts liked it though as it was close enough to have them considered 'on-site' all the time. Armsy maintains an apartment there he never uses and there's one for the Director just in case, but otherwise it's mostly empty. We usually use it as safe short-term housing for visitors."

"Why hasn't New Wave heard about this?"

"I might go around mostly unmasked, but I prefer not to advertise where I live. Or talk about the home of some of my charges. Vista, you mind giving us a short cut?"

The girl in green waved her hand and suddenly the far end of the corridor was right next to them. "Home again, home again, jiggity jig."

"Go wash up, honey while we set the table."

"Wait... You're Vista's MOM?" Amelia stared at the veteran Protectorate member.

"Foster mom. Vista joined up with the Wards just after Lung had pounded the lot of us into the pavement. Director Piggot was rather pissed at Armsmaster for not withdrawing when she ordered us to, I was covering the retreat and was... enjoying myself a little too much at the time. Then he sprouted wings and I suddenly couldn't keep up with him. Next thing I know I'm in the recovery ward down an arm. It was... Another Very Bad Day for me."

Challenger slipped her coat off, then pulled at the right shoulder of her bodysuit, opening it up. The stump revealed was in fact, whole, albeit the lower half of her arm was rather horribly burned. She reached up and carefully took of her face mask, revealing not only old but faded scars, but a blue eye so pale as to be almost white that focused on Amelia. "Evelyn Masters. Pleased to meet you, Amelia."

Amelia stared in shock before Challenger continued.

"Got a very slow regeneration out of that. Took me eating my namesake at Fugly's every day for a week to jumpstart it. My color vision's still shot on this side and still can't wield my axe properly but otherwise I'm about 90 percent. Normally the higher ups would transfer me out and put me in a hospital until I went nuts from boredom, but the Director though I'd make a better Wards liaison than Halbeard. I accepted the task with relish and when I found out about Vista's parents..."

Vista came out unmasked then, "Aunt Evie jumped on my POS biorents like the Killer Rabbit of Caerbannog. The Director was fully behind it, saying that if the Youth Guard would force a child to remain in that home, that they should be shot. Lisa Wilder. The boys except for Shroud are still clueless about that though, so Missy's fine."

"Aisha Laborn." the last person in the room introduced herself. "My bro and I live down the hall. Judge okayed giving him a hardship emancipation and custody over me as long as there's adult supervision or some shit. My dad checks in with us regular-like but my mom... Yeah, no... I'll be glad about her never coming to Christmas dinner again."

"All of us have had shitty mothers." Evelyn stated. "Aisha told me about what happened earlier, so we're here for you."

Amelia just sat there dumbfounded. Never in her life had she imagined anyone other than Vicky caring about her like this. She thought she'd just start bawling again, but held her head up with a trembling smile. "I think I want that ice cream now."

Amy: "You're literally running around with one hand tied behind your back?!?"
Evie: "HAHAHAHAHAHA!"

Challenger originally Triggered as a Combat Thinker with a minor Brute aspect. As long as she stays focused on one opponent she gets better and better at fighting them. Her father was part of a PMC and she, fresh out of her first Tour with the Marines planned to join him, as the US military was becoming a dead end career path. Her mother, enraged by her decision, threw a pan of hot oil in her face.

The end of that battle with Lung was a Second Trigger, giving her a minor Trump rating. Her power now applies to anything she stays focused on, including healing or being the Wards 'mom'. Piggot, knowing that the higher ups would pull Challenger out of the Bay if they learned of it, arranged keep her listed as medically inactive and put her in charge of the Wards. She's still not sure if it's a brilliant plan or a terrible mistake, but Challenger has risen to the task and is much less of a battle maniac. Armsmaster and Deputy Director Renick are aware she's mostly healed, as are Missy, Brian and Aisha.

Melissa "Missy" Biron / Lisa Wilder has been living with Challenger for almost a year now. Her father is in Buffalo with his sister (the source of Vista's new last name) getting counseling, her mother is in Nebraska. Since neither area had a PRT Wards program in that immediate vicinity (Toronto is the nearest branch) and with the seriousness of the Biron's abuse, Missy was declared a Ward of the State and set up with a new identity. She's in a much better headspace, Aunt Evie is crazy awesome.

Aisha's Breaker state is gaseous, not intangible. She found out about Evie while sneaking in to visit Missy. She's not vulnerable to electricity, but concussive blasts and aerosols are normally bad news for her. She has a minor flight capability, but if she's in Brian's smoke she becomes MUCH more powerful. She blends into and merges with the smoke. She can see fine through it and Brian instinctively knows where she is. Her flight speed increases, and she can reconstitute herself much faster. She also gains an enervating Striker ability, which also passively heals Brian. Touching someone for a few seconds is enough to knock out most normals. Prolonged contact is dangerous, especially if they're already in poor health, so she does carry a stim injector. (the same ones Armsy uses on himself or to counter his standard sedative cocktail) She tested it on herself when she got it. When it wears off she feels like absolute crap, but It actually helps her ADHD. She's on proper medication for it though.

So, since Amelia is needing like XXXL clothing for bottoms and they still don't fit, she must be really well muscled, how is she only around 6' tall? I'd guess she's closer to 7', especially since even a L top should at least make it to about her waist if she were only 6' tall.

Damn, girl. You're clothing budget is gonna make 5 digits left 'a the decimal point, easy.

I mean, I don't dislike it, but...

...have we seen Taylor or any parts of her story in the last like 5 chapters at this point?

I'm sorry to be the one to inform you, Glaciel, but Taylor died in Albany during the Simurgh attack that Brave Eidolon blocked. The story has to move beyond the death of one civilian no matter how tragic. You need to let go of Miss Hebert. 😔

Don't listen to the media, sheeple! It's a conspiracy. She's alive! ALIVE, I tell you!

PS: You took off your tinfoil hat, didn't you? 😔

Taylor is hiding out in Maine in a little cabin Erwin built in the woods. She's got a few amenities, Satellite phone with encrypted modem, ruggedized laptop, solar and hand-crank chargers for them, things like that, but she's basically roughing it for a couple of months while trying to figure out how not to accidentally kill everyone around her. U&L contact her regularly and Uber is being a pretty decent life coach, keeping her both grounded in her Humanity and helping her accept her new state of 'normal'.

I've got one more Amy chapter plotted out, then two more Interludes focusing on other groups / characters before we get back to Taylor. This also gives Leet enough time to come up with her costume.

Well,if isn't a pretty less dark AU?
It would be a shame if something happened to it...
Oh wait, Taylor is the personification of the Tsar Bomba if it was in 100% capability.
Nevermind then, Earth Bet had a good run.

You might want to consider a paragraph or two at the end of chapters detailing Taylor's life at the moment, just to keep the readers a bit more connected. You'll still be doing necessary worldbuilding, but it won't look like you've completely abandoned your MC.

A non-healer Amy is an interesting divergence. Conductor certainly found that out the hard way, very much to his detriment. Turbo uppercut for the win!

"Victoria, can you describe what happened? Amy's not in any shape to"

Vicky cuts Brandish off, "Mom, it's Amelia. And if you don't want to end up like Conductor, you might want to remember that."
"Chorus was tearing up the mall, one of the goons found me with Amy hiding from them, and they decided to show their resolve by making an example of her. Conductor started his monologue, stuck a gun into her side, leaned over and started whispering to her, then he pulled the trigger. It was horrible, and I couldn't do anything."
Vicky in tears is a heart wrenching site...
"At least you weren't hurt. That's the important thing."
"Mother, how dare you! SHE'S MY SISTER! AND SOMEONE TRIED TO KILL HER!"
"Conductor was right, you never treated her like family. No hugs, no 'I love you's', no encouragement. You treated her like a boarder while dad treated her like family. What's wrong with you?"

Huh, that went in a completely diff direction than I was planning. Now I'm wondering why Vicky didn't second trigger, her helplessness in the situation certainly would have been traumatic enough.

Amy also needs specialized clothing that can handle her possibly getting more muscle, or shapeshifting.

And at least Taylor has friends again, with Uber and Leet being rather understanding and helpful here.

Victoria and [Waste/Fragile One]
Now I'm wondering why Vicky didn't second trigger, her helplessness in the situation certainly would have been traumatic enough.

That's possibly true if Vicky were a normal Trigger, but she's not. She and [Fragile One] are something new.

During that basketball game, Brandish, Lady Photon and Manpower were present and did not have quite enough [Waste] to build a Shard Bud between them. Luckily Dean was there and wasn't using all the dead shit he was tapping into.

Vicky's power is the result of what is essentially a solo Cluster Trigger/Grab Bag. Dean and Brandish have low level Kiss mechanics on her as a result, he will always come crawling back to her and Carol will always prioritize Vicky.

Vicky will start flip-flopping between mild Kiss/Kill on them both, because [Fragile One] right now is a fussy baby wanting to be fed.

Her Aura incontinence is the result of the living Scion bits of her power working to jumpstart the dead Eden bits. It'll take a couple more years to fully incorporate everything. Until then, Glory Girl won't have the capability to Second Trigger.

Not that she would, the final integration would basically be one.

Agreed. Last I remember Shadow Stalker hasn't triggered yet.

Outside of Aisha getting Sophia's (differently expressing) canon Shard, there has been no mention of her in this fic except for the possibility of her (canon) phasing power being able to affect Taylor, which is now obviously not going to happen.

If we go by the canon timeline, Sophia HAS Triggered and would've been pinning people to walls in a Jason mask for a few months.

So if in this fic Sophia HAS actually triggered since Aisha basically has Sophia's canon shard will Sophia have different powers? If so, any hints as to what they might be if they're going to impact the storyline?

Sophia either has or would gain different powers. As to her relevance though, Sophia doesn't see Emma in the Alley here. That single "For Want of a Nail" change potentially makes her a non-character even if the rest of canon is the same.

Huh, I see. Yeah the canon plot is completely off the rails.

Chapter 17 - Wednesday, July 1st 8:00 AM
Glaciel pointed out that I had been kind of ignoring Taylor for a bit. However she's not really going to be doing a lot during what is essentially a training montage.

So we're going to rewind a bit. Enjoy!
[Taylor]

Erwin had brought Lacey over to the warehouse the next morning. She'd brought Dad and my go-bags and I'd spent some time sorting through them. Kurt and Lacey could keep the important papers and emergency cash Dad had had in his, I probably wasn't going to be needing them anytime soon, The photos and other mementos I worked into my backpack. Not having to worry much about personal hygiene freed up a surprising amount of room. Hell... I didn't even sweat anymore.

Erwin then said we'd be heading out tomorrow to an old safehouse cabin in Maine he'd built in the woods. Uber would be coming by later today with his own box of goodies to keep me from getting cabin fever for the next month or two or... however long it might take for me to get a handle on my powers.

"Okay, we've got you a laptop with plenty of books, movies, games and anime loaded onto it to keep you entertained. The whole SSI Gold Box line is there, so that'll keep you busy for a month by itself if you're interested. Satellite phone with modem if you need to get in touch or just trawl the internet or something. Solar and wind-up chargers for both. I'll leave regular PMs for you on PHO we can keep track of your progress on controlling everything and so I can update the basic training regimen that's on the laptop. Then we've got this thing to see how well you're doing at turning the heat down."

Uber pulled out what looked like a bulky TV remote combined with a fancy calculator. "Radiation monitor. It doesn't track the really nasty kind of radiation but you don't seem to creating that stuff."

"There's different kinds of radiation?"

Uber put his fingers up. "Four basic types. Alpha is mostly harmless unless you breathe or eat a source. A sheet of paper will stop it, but Polonium-210 is one of the main reasons cigarettes are bad for you."

Uber continued. "Beta radiation, which is basically electricity, is next. Aluminum foil works for it. Would you like a banana?" He pulled out one of the aforementioned fruit from the box.

"Why would I want a banana?"

"They're ubiquitous and go great with ice cream. They're also radioactive enough that there's something known as a 'BED', banana equivalent dose, that's made it into the lexicon."

"What else is there?"

"Third type is gamma. High energy ionizing radiation. Like an X-ray but stronger. Bad news is that you do need a couple of inches of lead or a couple of feet of concrete for shielding. Force fields can work, but the best testing of that has been when people went up against Behemoth."

"And that's what I'm putting out."

"Awkward phrasing there, but yes. Good news is that it's fairly safe when utilized correctly. It's used to sterilize fruit and produce to improve shelf life among other things. It's not as bad as the fourth type."

"Which is?"

"Particle flux. High energy neutrons and protons that not only tear though everything like very, very tiny bullets, they can induce radioactivity in whatever they hit. It's how nuclear reactors and atomic bombs work. It's why there's such a thing as fallout. One of the few small mercies about Albany."

"How is what happened there a good thing?"

"Had it been an actual nuke, the whole of New England would need to be evacuated for the next century at a minimum. Instead, we got a very clean Tsar Bomba. For an Endbringer attack the casualties were, and I hate to sound callous, light. There's some ozone damage and nitrogen smog, plus there was the EMP that took out the phones for a few hours but overall, Friday was a good day."

"Still, all those people..."

Uber put a hand on my shoulder to comfort me, then pulled his mask up. "My name's Derek and what happened was not your fault, Taylor."

I gaped at him in surprise. "Why are you...How?"

"Erwin told me yesterday while you were talking to Leet. Not that I needed him to. I'm very skilled at whatever I want to be and for most cape identities, you don't need to be Sherlock Holmes to put the clues together. But, as far as I can figure you couldn't have done what happened on Friday without some VERY twisted power shenanigans. Even if you had the Demon Core itself in your hands, it wouldn't have been that big. Relax, your secret is safe."

"What do you mean?"

Uber pulled out a dollar. "E equals Em See squared. Mass and energy equivalence. There's enough potential in this coin to wipe out most of the Bay. Thing is, if you can directly convert matter into energy, you can convert energy into matter... or antimatter. This happens pretty easily. It's detectable and most importantly you AREN'T doing it."

"I don't understand."

"There's a classic Star Trek episode, 'The Alternative Factor', where a guy switches back and forth with his antimatter universe duplicate. If you understand quantum physics enough, which through my power I can, turning one into the other isn't hard at all. Just requires a lot of heavy lifting so to speak."

"All right, so you can turn a coin into a bomb?"

"I can figure out how to do it. Leet can build something that lets me do it. Together, with enough parts and supplies, we could solve the World's energy problems forever, tomorrow." His face sobered then. "Or crack the planet in half. Humanity is NOT READY for this kind of power. We may never be responsible enough to handle it. All I'm certain of is that if at any point the PRT even suspects we could do something like this, they'd probably kill us. Full stop. String Theory had nothing on what Leet can do."

Uber had set me up with a new PHO account and given me his and Leet's non-Cape handles before he left.

"Leet's got an idea on something that you'll be able to wear that will hold up to some of the abuse you could put it through, but I need to get back and be his idea sounding board. Then we'll likely need to figure out how to build the tools to build the tools to make it. Don't expect us to have anything by next week."

After that, I settled in to stay in the warehouse for one more night. Idly looking through what all was on the laptop I took note that Uber and Leet's tastes obviously ran hard into sci-fi and fantasy. Some of the pre-Kyushu cartoons were very weird though. A magic princess with Godzilla attached to her butt? How did that even work?

We'd been on the road for almost five hours before pulling to a gate over an access road. "Where is this?"

"Round Mountain. Old family's owned like half the state since before it was a state. This is just a chunk of it used as logging and forestry land. I work for them every once in a while. It's thirty square miles of basically nothing but trees, critters, hills and ponds. On paper I'm just driving up here to do a regular property assessment. They had a good sugaring season this year so it's expected for someone to come around to check on the maples."

"And nobody's going to bother me here?"

"You might get some 'hikers' who're way more 'lost' than they should be, but Ashland's fifteen miles east of here and this whole region's posted as private property by one group or another. If they're here they're probably not supposed to be."

"I'm technically not supposed to be here either."

"True, but I spent two weeks building that cabin and not a soul noticed."

I looked around the tiny log structure. The door and window cover had both swollen shut and it'd taken a bit of work to pop them loose but otherwise it was still clean and dry inside. Erwin was busy folding up the camouflage tarp that had been covering the front of the building. "There's a stream about 50 yards that way. It leads down to a pond about half a mile over there. If you follow it up the hill, it's fed by a spring at the base of a big rock." Erwin paused and gave a long sigh. "Taylor, are you sure you want to do this?"

"I told you, I'm too dangerous to stick around in the Bay. I'm surprised nobody noticed me in the warehouse the past two nights. I've got a plan, sort of. I've got a way to call you if there's any sort of trouble, and I'm pretty sure I can handle myself if there is. I don't have to worry about food or anything, so... I guess I'll see you in a couple of months?"

"Loneliness is a sneaky bitch. It's easy to lose yourself to it."

I looked up at the noon sun shining overhead, the light filtering through the canopy and smiled. "I'm not alone though."

After Erwin drove off, I started arranging what little I had with me in the cabin before deciding to take a look around. I figured the rock Erwin had mentioned was a good place to start, so I started up the hill to gaze upon my new domain in all its splendor.

It was in fact a VERY big rock, easily the size of my house. A solid lump of granite with a small fountain of water burbling up from the side of it.

Erwin's cabin was okay and all, but this was a chance for me to do something. Make someplace of my own. With no one but squirrels and woodpeckers to be embarrassed by, I undressed, folded my clothes and set them off to the side. I then heated my hands to glowing and began to get to work.

I proceeded to start tunneling into the boulder around the spring, setting rough blocks of stone aside for use later. Leet had been right, I apparently needed be creative with my powers and cutting the rock like clay was oddly relaxing. Soon I had a decent sized nook carved out of the boulder and was smoothing out the walls and floor into glassy obsidian as steam wafted all around me.

It took hours and it was well after dark before I finished, but when I was done I had sort of a pillbox formed out of the megalith, with the spring filling it before spilling out of a notch in the granite big enough for me to crawl through. As my new pool filled I settled in. Soon the water was simmering like a jacuzzi, while a soft blue glow filled my personal cavern.

It might not have been much, but sometimes simplicity is better than any luxury.

Taylor's non-cape PHO handle for this story is 16MScoville. Her old 'The_Bert_12' still exists and she hasn't set up a (Verified Cape) account yet.

Uber and Leet's non-cape handles are PartTimePantologist and TeslaDisciple42.

16 million Scoville, that's a lot. The most spicy pepper is Pepper X at 2,693 million Scoville. But I suppose she is just that hot, purely radioactively speaking

Really hope that spring doesn't lead anywhere if she's making her own personal atomic hot tub

This reference makes me smile. I don't know why, but it does.
Erwin's cabin was okay and all. but here... this was a chance for me to do something.
Not sure about how I should read this part... was it intended to be read as: "... okay and all, but here...", or was that supposed to be two separate sentences so it reads as "Erwin's cabin was okay and all. But here... this was a chance for me to do something."? Either way would actually work.

She really needs to take a trip out to Bikini Atoll and test her nuclear detonation capability, so, if she can do it with things other than Endbringers, she knows what not to do by accident.

--

Also, someone get her a tiny turbine generator setup.

Thing is water doesn't retain radiation. It disassociates into hydrogen and oxygen. Since she's not a neutron source, the main radioisotope she'd be forming is oxygen-15, which has a half life of about 2 minutes.

Yes, any dissolved minerals would get spicy, but by glazing the cave she's prevented a lot of that. The biggest threat is a hydrogen explosion, which she'll barely notice since the cave's not pressurized.

It also means her thermal/radiation bloom is going to be masked by the rock.

Would a Gray Boy bubble affect Taylor???

Canonically, Gray Boy was able to (briefly) loop Scion. Make of that what you will.
