"Apologies for the wait," Retsuko Nizuuru says, drying her hands on a towel as she enters the waiting room in the Medical Division's hospital. You're not quite sure why she wanted to meet you at the hospital, or as soon as possible, but here you are. "Follow me," she waves you along after depositing the towel with an assistant, who quickly disappears.
The older kunoichi leads you through the winding halls and up two flights of stairs before coming to an office door with her name on it. The office itself is well-decorated, but not as ostentatious as Youme-sensei's. There's a couch on one wall and two comfy chairs facing her desk, behind which is an even bigger, comfier looking chair. There's a door leading to what must be her lab on one wall.
"Please Tsubaki, sit," the surgeon says as she passes you, fondling a lock of hair as she does.
You do as she says, even though she rubs the hair trapped between her fingers when you do.
The whole time you've been with Retsuko it's felt like she's been analyzing you like a particularly strange x-ray image. That feeling only gets stronger when she sits down.
"You're quite interesting, Tsubaki," the way the veteran kunoichi says your name definitely doesn't make you squirm in your seat. "A ninja of Amegakure who made jounin at fourteen, with some impressive missions under her belt- the declassified parts are impressive at least-, who was born outside of Ame, outside of Storms, who managed to get Lord Hanzo's attention so fast." Her mouth splits into a feline grin, "but not even Lord Hanzo showing interest in you is the most intriguing thing about you, is it Tsubaki?"
Even with your usual tactlessness, you can see what she wants you to say. "I think that it is," you say with an absentminded scratch to your chin.
"Usually it would be," Retsuko toys with her long braid, now slung over a shoulder, "even if you had an average bloodline. But we both know that you have anything but the normal kekkei genkai, insofar as any kekkei genkai could be called normal." You can tell she barely stops herself from licking her lips before asking the next question. "Would you let me see it?"
Well. She does know you have Shikotsumyaku already, so showing the older kunoichi its base application won't hurt anybody.
Almost gingerly, you pull up the cuff of your kimono's left sleeve, baring your wrist. At your urging, a spike of bone bloodlessly penetrates the skin, before retracting.
The blond kunoichi across the desk is leaning forward as you demonstrate, chin resting upon her hands even as her grin grows wider.
"Would you mind leaving me a sampl-"
"No," you say, definitely too quickly.
"It's not like it would get out, only a few of us would be able to tes-"
"No," you quickly cut in again, shaking your head.
"Ah well, that's alright. Perhaps next time," she leans back in her chair, not looking defeated or disappointed at all. "Outside of the official report, how about you tell me about some of your missions? Or about Lord Honda, I'm interested in hearing more about that."
After a little bit of apprehension, you loosen up and begin to tell the older jounin about some of the less-sensitive details of your missions, lulled into being more secure in talking about it, for whatever reason.
"Interesting. And you think the big man was the Five Tails' Jinchuuriki?" Retsuko finally says after a good amount of more irrelevant back-and-forth regarding your missions.
"Hn?" You're taken aback, and don't respond for a moment. "No, I didn't say that."
"But he was with the infamous 'Blood Ape' Roshi of Iwagakure. Who we know is the Four Tails' container," her fingers fiddle with the end of her long braid, now resting on the table. "Every other time you went pretty in-depth with how your opponent fought, Tsubaki. Why leave it out for them?"
"I didn't fight 'Iruka'," you lie. All that you had mentioned was fighting the One Tail alongside the Iwa-nin, you hadn't mentioned him being controlled by the Biwa. You didn't even mention how Etekou- or Roshi- had fought.
"You did say that, silly me. I know that you're fond of tea Tsubaki, would you like a cup?" The medical nin produces a pot and cups from somewhere in her desk, beginning to fill one before you even answer.
At this point it would be rude to do anything but agree to have a cup.
Strangely, the tea is unseasoned and weak, the way that you like it. You wonder if Youme-sensei has been talking to her old teammates.
"Ah, my apologies," the blonde jounin says, glancing at a clock above the door. "It seems we've run out of time today. But even so, it was very eye-opening talking to you, Tsubaki. I would so like to do this again."
Unsure if you would want to come back, you give a slight, hesitant nod.
"If it helps," Retsuko turns, pulling a folder from a filing cabinet behind her, "our meetings could be even more eye-opening than just sitting down to talk…"
[] The folder is marked Advanced Combat Anatomy: Crippling and Taking a Live Target. When Retsuko's thumb flicked through it, what little you could see included diagrams of tendons and blood vessels. You don't particularly feel like learning medical ninjutsu- ever, but knowing the ins-and-outs of the body in a more involved way will definitely serve you in the future.
[] The folder is marked Amegakure: Surviving at the Top. Based on the title, and the heavy blacking out of portions of the text you can see when it's flipped through, its contents will include what little declassified information there is on some of Lord Hanzo's closest confidants. Politics has never appealed to you, but you know it's inevitable you'll be involved in them, if your entanglement with the Heir continues.
[] The folder is marked Kenjutsu and Fuuton. From the title and what you can see of it when Retsuko flashes the inside for you to see, it's a light and very technical document on the enhancement of weaponry with Wind Style. That might let you build on what you learned with the swordsman, but you've never focused on swordsmanship so heavily before.

Three days later, your mission prep time comes crashing down.
"Jounin Tsubaki," a male voice, heavily-modulated by a gas mask, gets your attention the next day.
The speaker is a slimmer man of slightly-above average height, with surprisingly tanned skin and a mop of spiky dark grey hair. Even with his respirator on, you can see that almost half of the man's face is covered in what looks like a light burn scar.
Something clicks in your brain, and you recognize the man. He's Kandachi, one of Lord Hanzo's inner circle, and the Head of the Security Division.
Even you'll dip your head to someone like that, even if he doesn't have the unshakable reputation of the Head of the Assault Division.
"Kandachi, sir, to what do I owe this conversation?" You almost bite your tongue for being so formal. Sure, the man is famous in Ame, but you're not sure how widespread his reputation is outside of the village, let alone the country. You're not even really sure what his skillset entails.
"This is about your mission. Late last night, I received a report from the Land of Rivers. A whole platoon of Tani's men was wiped out, alongside two of our chunin-" he scoffs, a sound which echoes through his rebreather- "one of whom was an infiltrator leaking us valuable intel from Tani. What's important isn't that a bunch of worthless Tani-nin got put down like crippled livestock, or even that a couple of our guys got taken out. It's the way that it all went down. Seven of the Tani-nin's heads were popped open, two more were in the river, and the leader was clearly suffocated. Same with our guys, well, one of them was completely torn apart, but he was starved of oxygen first." He levels his eyes at you, as before he was talking at you more than to you, something the man is clearly comfortable doing to his subordinates, "Rinchi Nashinomi is early. You'll deploy before sundown today." Even as he makes the hand sign to disappear in a cloud of raindrops, as many Ame-nin do when they want to make a flashy entrance or exit, he adds on an afterthought, "If you ever see a green-haired Tani-nin, shaky girl, on the tall side, wears glasses. Thank her for the info, cause she's our last spy in Tani, and the coroner to boot."
With that, you're left standing on the street you were traversing, with less than seven hours to prepare for a high-stakes assassination mission.
[] Pick up just the absolute essentials from home, the time for preparation is over. This mission shouldn't take too long either. You'll intercept your target in the fields south of Ame and kill him.
[] Stock up extra for the mission, then head out. From what information you could gather, your target is no joke, and it wouldn't help to be prepared.
[] Write-in what you bring. (Extra ninja tools, a flak jacket for once, an actual sword, scrolls, etc.)
[] Go at the last possible minute. There's someone you want to talk to about the mission, who helped you do what little digging you could into your target and what he may and may not be capable of. You don't have a lot of time, but you can still get something done before dusk.
[] Youme-sensei, she mentioned that there was a compound that may help you with a fellow Wind Style-using swordsman. A compound that she said would take some time to be ready, you hope it's done now.
[] Juura, he helped you look in the archives this whole time, and he mentioned that he may have been able to dig up something that would really mess with a Kiri-nin, though you could only use it once. You hope he found it by now.
[] Satou, strangely enough, while she did use her resources to help you dig up what dirt there was to dig up on your target, she also got her father to pull some strings. Or try to at least, you may be able to get (indirect) help on your mission, if he came through for you.
A/N: I feel terrible that it's taken this long to get this updated. I hesitate to say "back on track", because as I've learned, there's really no way I can confidently say that. Sorry that it's been two and a half months since I put out an update, I'm not even as busy as I was at the beginning of July, just less motivated to do much of anything and a touch more hectic when it comes to things that aren't so fun. I haven't really been able to do the side stuff I wanted, not to the quality that I wanted it to be at at least. Sorry again for making you wait so long (especially for >2000 words of just sitting and talking… I'll try to make it up somehow), and sorry for making you read this. Hopefully this gets me into a groove and gets the ball rolling again in terms of writing.
Voting closes at 2:45pm EST on Sunday, August 21st! It feels so dirty saying that date after looking at when the last one closed…
