Bone and Blood (Naruto Quest)

First thing's first, Merry Christmas and happy holidays!

Now for the news: I'm sorry it's been so long since the last update, but I've been really busy IRL and things haven't been going to well for me, so there hasn't been much free time where I've been able to write. Things should get better soon, and I'll be able to update.

So have an update on why there isn't an update. There should be one posted by the end of the month.

Another non-update update:

Hate to be the bearer of bad news again, but things have gone from bad to slightly more bad. I don't want to get into specifics, but besides being extremely busy, I've recently been injured, so future updates are further out yet again. Sorry for the lack of activity here, I'll try to make it up somehow.

The Tale of Gunshomaru
Gunshomaru was the Champion of the Kaguya Clan eighty years ago, during the twilight of the Warring States Era. Now, the Champion of the Clan isn't the same as the Clan Head, and hasn't been for centuries, so while Gunshomaru wielded immense authority within the Clan, his word was far from the last, as his uncle Sekkejirou was the Clan Head, and his close relatives were the Elders.

But on the battlefield, the Champion's word was law.

So it was that, when his second was crushed by Byakuren, who would become the First Mizukage, he ordered his clansmen to cease their fighting against the forces of the Hai Clan. Byakuren had solidified an iron grip over his Clan, and had subjugated the smaller clans which inhabited the northern face of the Land of Water's Mainland (these would later come together to form larger clans, who form the base of Kirigakure's Hand Class). This newfound power of the previously relatively unknown clan had attracted the attention of the Kaguya, and Sekkejirou had ordered his nephew and army to march on them during one of their many raids on the Mainland.

The would-be Kage had so thoroughly dominated the man who Gunshomaru recognized as his partner, that the Champion recognized the Hai's power. Because of this, the Champion made his camp on the mainland, and invited Sekkejirou and the Elders to come to treat with Byakuren.

What transpired between the two Clan Heads behind closed doors is lost to history, but by the next turn of the moon, the Kaguya Clan was marching alongside the Hai.

With two of the strongest clans of the Land of Water marching under his banner, Byakuren quickly brought the country's ninja to heel. This fast conquest necessitated the formalization of the social order of Byakuren's new village, though many suspect that he had laid the framework for Kirigakure's caste system years before his campaign began. Those clans and families who had lived in the same provinces as the Hai, and had fought with them from the beginning became enshrined as the Eyes Caste; those outsiders who allied with the Hai, or married into the Eyes and fought alongside them became the Hand Caste; and those who had only agreed to serve after being defeated were made the downtrodden Foot Caste. It is said that Byakuren wished to create a special fourth caste, all for the Kaguya, his strongest allies and the kin of his greatest comrade. But all of the work Gunshomaru had done to finally integrate his clan with an outside power would quickly be undone.

Shortly after the soon-to-be Mizukage's unification of the mainland, but before he formally founded the village, an assassination attempt was made by a group of would-be Foot Caste, centered on a handful of Kaguya dissidents. While Byakuren swiftly saw to the fate of his traitors, to the surprise of the Kaguya, justice within their clan was handled just as quickly, and just as brutally. But the executor of the judgment was not Gunshomaru, Byakuren's ally, but Sekkejirou, the previously cold leader of the clan.

The Clan Head had returned from a period of seclusion, allegedly for an illness, shortly before the attack on Byakuren. Initially, it was whispered that Sekkejirou had been the architect for the attack, and indeed he may have been, but the whispers quickly turned in a more sinister direction. Rumor had it, among the Kaguya, that the Clan Head was being controlled by a truly evil technique born from Gunshomaru's kekkei genkai.

Gunshomaru had a unique ability, one not seen before or since, even in a bearer of Shikotsumyaku. One that made him incredibly dangerous, and perfectly suited for aiding in the unification of the Land of Water. According to legend, by implanting his bones in an enemy, Gunshomaru was able to take control of their body, making them his puppets against their will.

This power, the Clan said, was responsible for the radical change in Sekkejirou's attitude towards Kirigakure.

Whether or not there was any truth in the rumor that the Kaguya Champion was controlling the Clan Head, the Clan quickly turned against him. Rather, the Clan quickly turned against both Gunshomaru and Sekkejirou.

Mere months after the attempt on Byakuren's life, Sekkejirou passed away. A relapse of his earlier illness was cited, but it's far more likely he was poisoned.

The new Clan Head was Shokutarou, the young and ambitious grandson of Sekkejirou, and a long-time rival of Gunshomaru. Not that he could actually challenge the Champion, it had been a long time since a direct descendant of the line of Clan Heads possessed Shikotsumyaku, and even longer since there had been two living bearers of the kekkei genkai at the same time.

Shokutarou had one great advantage over the Clan Champion, however. While the Champion had spent his time with those outside the Clan, networking and building his connections to ensure a prosperous future for both Kirigakure and the Kaguya; the new Clan Head had his finger on the pulse of the Clan itself.

The Kaguya were angry. Their greed and bloodthirst having reached an all-time high thanks to being bottled up by the short honeymoon period after Kiri's founding, it was easy for Shokutarou to direct all of their anger into one devious purpose.

One dark night, shortly after Byakuren had been formally named First Mizukage, the Kaguya committed their most vile act. Their most vile act after the Warring States Era, at least.

Gunshomaru returned to his home on the outskirts of the village, at the core of what was to be the Kaguya Compound, which was already under construction at the time. He had spent the night and day enjoying the festivities surrounding the First Mizukage's ascension, and, along with his wife Moika, was rather intoxicated by the time he returned home. Taking advantage of this, Shokutarou and a core group of his followers hid in the Champion's house, and, in his moment of weakness, mobbed him and stabbed him with poisoned blades, further weakening him. Despite this, the Champion managed a valiant last stand, cutting down four of the conspirators with his kekkei genkai, even as the poison weakened his bones and hindered his regeneration. Among those cut down were two of the Kaguya Elders, who had long opposed the Champion, as well as the former clan head Sekkejirou's younger brother.

In fact, it appeared to the conspirators that the Champion would beat back their assault and go on to cause bloody retribution against them and their supporters. That was until Shokutarou revealed his trump card, an heirloom of the Kaguya passed down since the Clan's founding, only ever wielded by the Clan Head or their heir. A sword of utter evil, which tortures its weilder and wicks away at the very souls of his enemies, cutting through them, body and essence.

While the Champion was distracted with his other assailants, the treacherous Clan Head ran him through with Fukiaezu's cursed blade. With Gunshomaru's death, the thread of fate was severed, never to be restored; the Kaguya would persist in the doomed state Shokutarou had left them in.

Mere weeks after Gunshomaru's death, the Kaguya were in open revolt against Kirigakure, beginning a long history of bloody, fruitless revolts executed by the Clan against the Village. Not that Shokutarou would be able to enjoy indulge in the carnage he had unleashed for long, Byakuren personally wiped out nearly all of the Clan Head's family, the Clan Head himself included, and saw to it that the remaining Kaguya Elders were killed in the fighting as well.

In doing this, the First Mizukage was able to keep the Kaguya cowed into the reign of his predecessor. But the Clan would never learn, and still haven't learned. That is their curse, a curse which few have been able to free themselves from, but nearly all legends of the Kaguya come from those good few.

A/N: So, it's been a while. Sorry about that. The proper update should be up in the next few days, followed by PSPS later in the week. After that, everything should be back to a somewhat-regular schedule. Thanks for staying with this everyone, Bone and Blood wouldn't be here without you.

Shadow Edit: Because it doesn't really warrant a real post: Chapter will probably be up tomorrow, didn't have much free time today, but the afternoon is probably free and it's probably half done.

Double Secret Super Shadow Edit: "Half done" is more like not sure how much longer this one's going to be because I forgot the last vote was a "pick four". So there's two more parts that have to go into it, still aiming for Sunday/Monday.

Say, what's the policy on writing omakes?
Feel free! I'm not quite sure what kind of rewards there would be, but it would be really cool to see that!

To be honest, I don't really understand what this chapter is about... :(

Well, we voted on which Kaguya Clan tale we wanted to hear, after expressing interest in our Parent Clan. This was after informing our mom of the Kiri-nin we encountered who was in on spiriting Tsubaki and the mom away. I don't know how the mom feels about our curiosity towards the Clan proper, but she fears them for what they might do to us. They fear the Shikotsumyaku, and we've just been given a valid reason for it. As for whether we want to look into how we can emulate that ourselves is up in the air.

I can see some parallels with Konohagakure's origins in Byakuren and Gunshomaru, two clans that have clashed in the Warring States forming an alliance that laid the foundation for a Hidden Village. Part of me wonders what would have happened if the Kaguya hadn't turned on their Champion, and I'm left to wonder if this lamentation over the loss of influence is from Suzuran or if this sentiment is shared among contemporaries in the Clan. Truth be told, I think the Tale tells as much of the mom's character as it does Kiri's founding. She has expressed us to live through whatever we go through, though I posit that she might also be influencing us to follow in Gunshomaru's footsteps, to become a power player in Ame equal in standing to Hanzo and his Heir. Tsubaki is already in the position to work towards that, as she is Honda's right hand in name.

The second takeaway is that our kekkei genkai could allow us to control people's bodies like puppets, though the details on how are a mystery. Then again, the anecdote may just be there to describe how much of a political animal Gunshomaru was to manipulate the Kaguya into cooperating with the Hai.

The third one is the mention of a unique sword that killed Gunshomaru. One of the Tales we could've heard revolved around the Kaguya Clan founder and the sword Nunoboko. I posit that they are one and the same, and that they had it until something had happened. Maybe the Tale of the Founder could explain more of the sword's fate, but maybe we should put a pin on that for a later interlude if we find ourselves staring down the Kaguya in the future.

Inter-Mission 3: Three Senseis
'Profiling the Uchiha' and 'Analysis on the Sarutobi and Inuzuka' are the ones which stand out to you, the former recalling the most interaction you've had with unallied ninja and the latter recalling a very interesting encounter. They're also both about some major players in Konoha, you know the Uchiha run the police department and the Hokage himself is a Sarutobi. The Inuzuka… play with dogs, and… Well, the Inuzuka was just kind of there and you happened to take her prisoner. Either way, the information will be of interest to you.

"Ara? Oh, interesting, interesting." Tobiko comments when you point out the folders, shuffling the others under the table, where they seemingly disappear. "You've got a real interest in Konoha, huh? What's that about?"

"Hmm," you think for a moment, just what is it with you and Konoha? Maybe it's just having more interactions with them. "I spent a little bit of time with the Uchiha in Sora-ku," you admit, "that's how I got all the intel on them." You pull the 'Sarutobi and Inuzuka' folder closer to you and lightly tap it, "As for these two," you shrug, "the information just seems more relevant honestly. The weird Kumo bunker one sounds kind of like grasping at straws, Suna and their weapons have never really been able to hold my interest-"

"Heh," Tobiko chuckles at that, barely restraining jabbing you with an elbow. "I can agree with you there, Puppets are sooo boooring," the Subterfuge jounin (who, you have to remind yourself, is like, 20 years older than you despite how she acts), draws out. "But I'm surprised you don't care more about the poisons of Suna, they're really the leader in that department."

You shrug again, "I have learned a lot about poison from Youme-sensei, and I find them useful, but the production side of things is a little much."

"Totally, totally," Tobiko nods her head a few times, "experimenting with new techniques and jutsu is a lot more fun, right?"

Your response is accompanied by a half shake of your head, "Well, yeah. But also no. New taijutsu-" you leave your kekkei genkai out of it, "are always nice to experiment with." After saying that, you quickly move back onto the previous topic, "It would be nice to look into the Jinchuuriki, but Konoha's the more relevant threat."

"It is," the older jounin confirms, "you wouldn't think so considering all of their fronts, but if anyone would benefit from stretching their front lines into Storms it would be Konoha. Iwa, somehow, has their fingers in more pies. Anyway," she cheerily moves on, "enough with the boring politics, we can talk that while we're on duty."

~~~~~~~~~~
After combing through the dossiers with Tobiko for most of the rest of the day, you leave Subterfuge accompanied by the elder jounin.
"Well, Tsubaki! It's always a pleasure, do stop by more often," Tobiko cheerily salutes as you reach the street on the other side of the fence which separates Subterfuge from the rest of Amegakure. At first glance, it's just a chain link fence on top of a short wall, but having been on the other side, you know that there's a complex array of seals reinforcing the seemingly-shoddy defenses.
"Thanks for that information," you respond, "it wasn't unpleasant. But maybe not so deep in your department next time?"
"Heh, sure sure," Tobiko concedes to you, "we can make a day of it or some-such. Anyway, don't be a stranger, and if anything happens with those two, be sure to tell me."
Before you have the chance to question her on what that means, the youthful jounin disappears in the cloud of raindrops, returning to the headquarters behind you.
With that on your mind, you remember that you're going back to Medical tomorrow.
Wait…
~~~~~~~~~~

It's a particularly dreary day when you arrive in Medical. It hasn't been too long since the last time you were here, but something feels more off. Not that Medical was ever a place you really liked or felt comfortable in, but there's something even stranger about it now.

"Such a shame you couldn't come here earlier," Retsuko Nizuuru says as you arrive in some kind of cloistered laboratory. "Then again if Lord Honda had caught wind of you being in here during an appointment of his, well…" The blonde jounin shrugs, braid bouncing, "let's just say it may be better you were indisposed."

"I don't see how he would know," you respond, glancing around at the unfamiliar medical and scientific equipment around the lab.

Retsuko gently closes the door behind you with her foot, and adopts a more hushed tone. "Not all of my peers agree with my-" she rolls her hand slowly, as if searching for the word, "-sentiments regarding Lord Honda." She then moves closer to the table in the center of the room, while still talking. "Not that my showing you around would be suspicious, but you never know what people will say."

"Right," you nod, not really caring about the subject since it isn't really relevant.

The older jounin finally arrives at the table, putting one hand on the center of the sheet covering it. There's something large and lumpy under the sheet, with a number of tubes and wires sticking out from it, leading to strange devices on the other side of the table.

"Before you see this, I just want to thank you," Retsuko says with an incline of her head before removing the sheet.

With the covering removed, you can see that it's…

Okay, you can't say what it is. Oh no! You know that blob!

"Is that the thing I brought back from the Land of Rice Paddies?" You ask, surprised that you're even seeing it again. You resist the urge to wrinkle your nose and say that it ruined an entire outfit. Well, you do wrinkle your nose, the blob has a really strong smell now that it's been opened up. But you hold your tongue.

"It is!" Retsuko seems excited by this and moves in to show you the innards of the pile of undifferentiated off-white flesh. "Tell me Tsubaki," she beckons you to come closer, and you do, leaning in to get a better look. "What do you see inside of it?"

At first glance, it just looks like a mushy pile of what looks like fat, with some connective tissues connecting it all up. But on a closer look, you see reddish tubes intertwined with stringy, white-blue structures.

"Is that-" you have to get in close to see the little nodes dotting the stringy structures "-is that a chakra network?"

The Medical jounin's voice has as much excitement in it as her eyes do, "Yes, Tsubaki, it is. Do you understand how significant it is? The subject is very difficult to keep alive, but-"

"Subject? Alive? Is this…" you trail off, not sure if you want to say 'a person' or something else like that. It doesn't particularly bother you that you brought something like this to Ame even if it was a person, but the implications if it is are something you do not want to think about.

"No," Retsuko preempts your half-asked question. "We still aren't quite sure how it was made, but the fact that it has chakra isn't what's interesting about it, practically all living things have chakra. Tsubaki, you're able to use Wind Style, correct?"

You nod, "It's my affinity."

"Put your hands on the center of the mass and channel Wind into it," the elder jounin instructs.

You cock your eyebrow at that, but do it anyway.

"Now, I'll place my hand over yours, and channel Earth," after forming a hand seal, she does so, and you can feel the chakras intermingling.

After a few moments, one of the machines monitoring the blob begins to light up and ding, while the metal bracelet on Retsuko's wrist rattles as one of the bangles dances erratically. Though you're not much of a sensor, even you can tell that this is anything but normal.

"What is this?" A mite hesitant to ask.

"This is a kekkei genkai," Retsuko's eyes meet yours, and you can see the fire behind them. "Whoever created this has managed to create the conditions necessary for a chakra system to channel two natures simultaneously, as well as to mix them together. It shouldn't be possible without well, it being innate to a person-" she pauses for a moment, as if unsure to add on "-or granted by a Tailed Beast." She then stops channeling her chakra into it, and you do the same. "Unfortunately, all we've managed to get out of it is Magnet Style, and possibly Scorch, though we're unsure about that."

You didn't know about Scorch Style, you still don't know what it is, but it's interesting to hear about another elemental kekkei genkai.

"Still, this is a monumental discovery, the Medical Department owes you a real debt. No matter what some members might say." Okay, Retsuko definitely left that part in just to bait you but…

"What some members might say?" You have to ask. It's not like drama is your thing, but if it involves you, why not ask?

"Well, those same peers who completely buy into Lord Hanzo's infallibility are pretty insular," Retsuko covers the blob back up with the sheet, and moves away from the table. "They like to keep to themselves, only share what's necessary with everyone else, and only when they're told to. It's almost like they don't trust the other ninja of Amegakure to use their innovations correctly. Research is pretty much the same way. It's all a shame really."

"Yeah, yeah it is," it's a realization you're not happy with at all. In fact, quite the opposite. But it also makes you want to get out of Medical even faster.

~~~~~~~~~~
Late the next afternoon, you're in the lecture hall attached to the building Youme-sensei's lab is in, with four other ninja (who actually attended her lecture). The small group is gathered around the large desk at the center of the room.
Three of the ninja are other jounin you've seen before in passing, or talked to once at the Missions Office. A taller, purple-haired woman with pale eyes in a boiler suit; a short, fat man with a black hair in a flak jacket over a hooded boiler suit; and a lanky, pale man with stringy pale brown hair in a standard Ame uniform sans boiler suit.
The fourth ninja staying after the lecture is one you know. Know is a bit of a strong word, actually, but you've been on a mission with him before. It's Pale Boy- er, Mikkanjirou? Yeah, that's right. Maybe the older lanky guy is a member of his Clan, they do look similar.
Walking up to the group, you quickly exchange pleasantries before slotting yourself in next to the only chunin.
"Jounin Tsubaki," he greets with an incline of his head, "you look well."
"And you," he looks just about the same, same bags under his eyes and complexion, but you still say it anyway. "How have you been since the mission?"
"I've been out since," the older chunin responds with a light sigh, "though I haven't left Storms again. I'll be honest, the end of that mission was a bit of a shock. I think I should thank you for it though, your leadership really helped us through it."
"I do try," you say, a bit surprised at the thanks. "It's not easy for most people, the first couple of times."
"Most people," the chunin catches on, "but not you."
You shrug, "It was… natural, I suppose."
"Ah, Jounin Tsubaki, before Youme-sensei returns, let me introduce you to my older brother, Myutarou," he indicates the similar-looking jounin.
"Jounin Tsubaki," the other Useiken inclines his head, greeting you more properly. "I've seen you in the Missions Office before, and your name has come up in the jounin circles from time to time."
"It's good to finally be acquainted," you return.
Youme-sensei chooses to make her reappearance in the hall shortly after, extending a greeting to the five chosen to attend the after-lecture seminar. "Welcome, it's good to see that you all stayed as I told you to. And we have a guest as well, lovely." She pulls on a pair of gloves as she comes over to the table, setting up for the lesson. "Then, shall we begin?"
Pick two new poison ninja arts to learn, you can choose to apply one of these at the start of combat:
[] Ninja Art: Blood Loosening
A poison which makes it impossible for blood to clot after it gets into the bloodstream. Only a small amount is needed to take effect.
[] Ninja Art: Blood Stopping
A poison which concentrates platelets around where it's applied, creating a clot which can be dangerous, especially in a combat scenario.
[] Ninja Art: Internal Constriction
A poison which causes the walls of blood vessels to expand, constricting blood flow to or from the affected area. Takes a relatively large amount to take effect, but can be used multiple times.
[] Ninja Art: Dancing Pins
A poison which rapidly fires the pain receptors in a large area around where the wound is afflicted. Though it will wear off over time, there is no known antidote short of cutting out the affected area.
~~~~~~~~~~

After Youme-sensei's lesson on poisons, it turns out you have one more day before your next mission. Besides missions, it's been a while since you really spent any time with one of your friends your age.

Pick One:
[] Satou has proposed a day out that isn't just training. Rather you'll get to see some of the less public towers inside of Ame. Not the restricted ones, just the privately-owned or operated her family has some hand in.

[] Juura's offer to teach his genin is still open. Just one day with them won't let you teach all that much, but it'll be a good foundation to build off of. Also teaching them with him just sounds fun.

[] Iori is leading his first mission the day after tomorrow, and wants to meet up to get some pointers. And maybe probably definitely have a friendly spar.

A/N: Kind of had to find a place to stop here, an organic one seemed even further out. The first new style mission selection will be in the next update. The chosen dossiers will be coming soontm in an informational threadmark.

A/N2: Things should be more regular from here on out, again I'm super sorry for the wait, but it's been a hectic few months and shaking the rust off was a bit of a trial.

Voting closes at 8:00pm on Wednesday, February 16th!

Looks like a good non-lethal option.

I assume these are the people in charge of the heir's various modifications and experimental enhancements; the legitimate matter of ensuring the next Amekage doesn't have intimate details of his altered anatomy (and the inevitable vulnerabilities therein) leaked to rival nations would make a well-greased slide into "we know best, we get first dibs on everything, nobody else gets a damn thing."

Speaking of, am I right in remembering that he actively hates us and has every intention of killing us, our mother, and probably anyone we were close with once he becomes Amekage?

I'll need to read back a few updates to refresh myself

[x] Ninja Art: Internal Constriction

Perfect for taijutsu use. And maybe we can use it as a bastardized medical jutsu to delay death by blood loss due to amputations or such.

[X] Ninja Art: Dancing Pins

Nice way to deal with mook

If we're going the lethal route, Blood Stopping and Internal Constriction in combination would be the way to go. Otherwise... I'd need more time to look over possible synergies.

Pins is alright, but it's just pain. Ninja worth their salt fight through pain all the time.

Pointers is good. Spars are always good.
