Five chunin appear in front of the mission office about two hours later. It's within the time limit you had given them, but it's a little closer to the two-hour fifteen-minute deadline than you would have liked. Still, you have to give them some credit for showing up all at once. Even if you saw them gather on a nearby rooftop first.
When they all body flicker onto the drying (not for long, considering the clouds overhead) street in front of the mission office, you take stock of them quickly.
Satou is present, of course, and standing at the middle of the formation. Her short hair is held out of her eyes by her forehead protector, and she's wearing her standard Ame flak jacket over her long sleeved green shirt and baggy pants.
Left to right, you go over the chunin present, besides Satou.
Furthest to your left is a slim, pale teen chunin, he looks a few years older than you. There are heavy bags under his eyes, and his hair is dull brown and hanging in strands. His forehead protector is also on his forehead (the only one besides Satou to be wearing it "correctly"), and his dense, slate-grey flak jacket is over a heavy, long-sleeved, dark grey hoodie and matching pants. He has a large scroll strapped horizontally to his back.
Between Satou and the chunin you will dub "Pale Boy" until you learn his name (which you will have to do), is Satou's former teammate Niina. Niina is your own former teammate, Juura's twin sister, and the family resemblance is evident. Both are pale, close to your own shade, and both are tall for their age, with Niina being both taller and more developed than yourself or Satou. Niina also has dark blue eyes and long red hair, currently held back into a low ponytail. Her flak jacket is over a baggy dark blue shirt and baggy dark blue shorts, the latter over a pair of fishnet leggings. Her forehead protector is slung around her neck, and she has a number of scrolls strapped to her jacket via straps she's added on.
Immediately to Satou's right is a tall, male chunin who's probably the oldest member of the team. Not only is he tall, but he's pretty wide, and you can see his muscles thanks to the short sleeved fishnet shirt he wears under his flak jacket. His skin is tanned, while not particularly dark, it's dark for a resident of Ame. He has cropped dark brown hair and flinty black eyes, and he doesn't have the most pleased expression on his face. His forehead protector is tied around his right bicep.
Furthest to your right is a chunin you can't place the age of. He's on the shorter side, shorter than Niina, but for some reason you'd place his age as similar to Pale Boy. He has long, blond hair, nearly as long as yours since it's straight and reaches his mid-back, an average skin tone for Ame, and amber eyes. He wears a collared shirt with elbow-length sleeves under his flak jacket and tan pants covered in pockets. A pair of swords is strapped to his hips, hung on the same belt his forehead protector is embedded in.
Both Sword Boy and Niina have rebreathers hanging from their belts.
All-in-all, it's not too bad a team, and you think you can work with them. Even if you only know two of them.
"The couriers told us to meet our jounin at the mission office," Big Guy says, sounding annoyed. "We're all here early and they're going to make us wait?"
Satou looks up at him, brow furrowed.
It's then you realize that, while they're all wearing flak jackets and forehead protectors, you aren't.
"Gorei, stop it," your friend speaks up, but you silence her with a gesture.
"I'm the jounin in charge of your mission, Go-rei," you tell him, jabbing a thumb towards your chest. "Tsubaki, if you don't already know me, you probably aren't important enough to have heard of me." It sounds like a boast, but it's actually true.
"Funny, but I haven't heard of you, and you don't look like a jounin. Put your forehead protector on and get out of here, kid." Gorei goes to move past you, and you see Pale Boy and Sword Boy shoot each other a look, uncertainty clear in the motion.
"Turn around and stand with the rest of the team," you tell him, your tone even but the weight of your chakra and killing intent brought to bear as authority. At least you try to make it seem like authority, it probably still feels like being stalked by a shark to them.
The big chunin immediately locks up, walking backwards and back into position. "M-my apologies," he says as you dial back on the intensity.
"Tsubaki," Satou cuts in, voice shaky. The whole team looks pretty shaky, Niina is even paler than normal and her eyes as wide as saucers; Sword Boy's feet have shifted into something like a combat stance, but his hands are shaking; and Pale Boy is standing straight as an arrow, a trained reaction to a superior flexing their killing intent. "Thanks for doing this, but the next time-" she stumbles on her words, something you haven't seen her do in years "-someone is insubordinate, you don't have to let out that much chakra."
Oh right, she's training to be a sensor, and Niina is naturally skilled as one. Sending out a wave of killing intent, either targeted at a group including them or untargeted, might not be the best idea going forward.
"Sure, I just had to get that out of the way," you answer, putting some pep in your voice. That's what leaders do on missions with bigger teams like this, right? Not like it's black ops or wetworks at least.
The door to the mission office opens, and you signal for the team to get a move on.
Nobody says anything until you reach the far side of the lake surrounding Ame.
"Before we start the mission proper, I read the mission file, but I don't know much about any of you," you say as the team stands in a relatively dry spot under thin clouds. It looks like it's going to start raining again over the village. "Well, except you two," you point at Satou and Niina, "but if you need to share what you can do with the rest of the team, feel free." Both girls nod, "You start," you say, pointing at Sword Boy.
"Ah, as far as I know, you three entered the Academy right after I graduated," he says, as he affixes his mask over his face. "As you can see, I'm a swordsman, though I incorporate shurikenjutsu into my kenjutsu. I can use some Earth Style jutsu, and my reflexes are faster than my movement speed, not too great at Body Flicker. I'm decent at genjutsu. Oh, and my name is Ameishiki. If the file didn't say who was who."
The file did not. His clarification is helpful, as it means Pale Boy is Mikkajirou Useikan, from one of the few clans of Ame.
"I'm Mikkanjirou, from the Useikan Clan," Pale Boy confirms, "I know medical ninjutsu, and I tend to fight from a distance. I'm pretty good at setting up traps, and I'm able to fall back on combat ninjutsu in a fight. My Fire Style is rather advanced."
You nod to Niina, before Gorei can speak.
"I'm Niina, I haven't worked with Mikkanjirou yet, and Gorei doesn't know my capabilities," she starts, not slowly but not as quick as she could be. "I'm a natural sensor, and I've trained my effective range to jounin-levels, that's what the Security Division says. I primarily use fuinjutsu in combat, though I'm not much of a front-line fighter, I'm good with explosive tags. I can use Water and Earth Style."
"You all know me," Satou says to the team, "Satou Koifuku. Ninjutsu is my strong suit, I can use Fire Style well and I know some Water Style and some Lightning Style. I use kunai up close."
"Gorei Sontaru," the big chunin says. For his earlier demeanour he hides being mad at being forced to introduce himself last pretty well. "I apologize for earlier, Tsubaki," his apology sounds sincere, though there's an edge to his tone, "I had never seen a face to associate with your name, your reputation precedes you." He may just be talking you up, but there's also something of a point to that, if word of some of your missions has gotten out. "I use taijutsu and Earth Style ninjutsu, I'm more of a grappler than a striker, and I prefer brass knuckles or tonfa to kunai. I have some specialty training as a survivalist, so if anything goes wrong and we go off-map I can keep us alive."
Maybe you misjudged him earlier, he doesn't seem so bad.
"I'm Tsubaki, which you now all know," there's no arrogance or bragging in the statement or your tone. "I'm a taijutsu specialist, and I can use both Wind Style and Fire Style. I also use ninjutsu to augment my taijutsu. I use kenjutsu sometimes, typically iaido. I have some poison knowledge and accompanying resistance." You look over the group, "Any more questions?"
There are none, which means it's time to depart for Yanwu Island.
[] Take the team through the Land of Rivers. It's the most straightforward route to Fire Gulf and, by extension, Yanwu Island. However, Suna will be expecting any assault on the weapons facility to come from Tanigakure, and the Land of Rivers. The island itself is also pretty far from the nearest port in Rivers, but not particularly far from the cliffs around the southern edge of the country.
[] Take the team through the Land of Fire and travel to the island via Namiraku, the Land of Waves. Waves is a theoretically independent country with no military might to speak of and only dubious value as a trading partner. It is, however, also theoretically neutral and, according to reports, not controlled by Konoha. Departing from there, either on your own or on a ship, would bring you close to Yanwu Island. On the other hand, it means going through the Land of Fire.
[] Take the team through the Land of Wind. While the most direct route is through the Land of Rivers, traveling through the Land of Wind will get you closer to the island. Also, the approach to Yanwu from Wind will be less guarded than the approach from Rivers, though if you stowed aboard a ship or took one, you would have to circle the island regardless. You would also be going straight through the Land of Wind, traveling along their strongest supply lines.
A/N: Belated Happy Easter. It wouldn't have been belated, but well, we all know what happened the last few days.
A/N2: Hopefully that doesn't happen again and the server situation is stable. Reading back through a little it feels like Tsubaki might be the flashback bad guy in some tragic backstories… Are we the baddies?
