Chapter Seventy-Seven
Open fire.
Open fire.
Fight in the name of the God-Emperor, battle-brothers!
My eyes widened as I looked at the spider-like Angel.
I brought up my right hand, and then clenched it tightly, as if crushing an insect.
Peace is a lie, there is only passion.
The hell is wrong with me?
The hell is wrong with-
The ground is crackling and splintering.
What is going on?
Oi, someone, anyone, what's going on?!
Fire erupts from the ground, and in columns rises, burning to a crisp everyone I know, everyone I met, until nothing but ashes remain.
Nothing but ashes.
And silence.
Deadly, quiet, silence.
I opened my eyes then.
And I took a deep breath as I quietly pushed a hand to the front of my face.
Sweat covered my body.
A nightmare, really?
I'm too old to have nightmares.
A nightmare.
I chuckled darkly.
"Nightmares give me strength," I mumbled.
...
It had been four months.
Yes.
Four months.
Four months of uninterrupted monotony in the Eva verse.
Four months.
Four months.
Scared didn't even cope it.
It felt like coming down from a runner's high.
Suddenly, things like 'budget' and 'interactions' acquired a different perspective. Seele didn't stop trying to recruit me.
The world was a dangerous place, the Angels had yet to attack again after the spider, and my lies kept piling up.
...
The thing I feared the most, however...
Was that the thing would forget me here.
Yes, what if he did that?
I would never go back home.
Forever displaced.
Forever forced into another place.
A new life, with a Battle-Loli by my side.
Well, I could have ended up worse, but that was why I didn't trust the 'voice'.
Clearly.
...This was still 'way too good' to even leave me the doubt that he was done.
If he really hated me enough, if he really wanted me to 'suffer', then he could have just as easily dropped me into a Death World with Orks and Chaos Cultists and Space Marines.
"What is wrong with me?" I mumbled as I slapped my cheeks while looking at myself in the mirror.
"Morning, big brother!" Yui cheerfully said as she skidded down the hallway.
"Yeah, yeah," I grumbled as she hugged me. I prepared breakfast, as always.
They could make a sort of sit-com out of this 'Man and Battle AI-Loli coexisting', now that I thought about that.
"Are you going to let me drive this time?" Yui asked.
"Not a chance in hell," I replied calmly. "The car is mine, my baby, my beauty, and my precious machine of love for me to cherish."
"Sheesh! Who do you love more? That stupid mechanical and fossil fuel thing of the past or me?!"
"Nice trick, but it's not going to work! Love cannot be quantified! You either love or you do not!"
I clapped my hands together. "Eat your breakfast and let's move out, we've got to get to school in time today!"
Yui sighed.
I stepped out in the morning and gazed up at the sky.
Something was wrong.
And yet I couldn't understand what.
"Have you ever had a moment where you think you must do something, or something bad happens if you don't?" the barkeeper I regularly visited during my pause during lunch hours -the only mean to get some time to myself away from everyone else- asked me that as I took my coffee.
"Uh, I think I know the feeling, Karaita," I said. "Like, something's about to go wrong, but you've got no clue what it is."
Karaita nodded, "For me, it's when my hips start aching. Mah," he mumbled. "I kept the shop up even with all that nasty Angels business, but it's getting desperately painful now, like the sky's about to fall or something."
"Uh-uh," I remarked calmly, and after I paid for the coffee, I stepped outside. I still had a few minutes before the lunch break ended, and-
My cell phone ringed.
"We have an emergency!" Misato exclaimed.
"What is it?"
"The Magi System's on lock down now, an angel has infiltrated the base, and is trying to make it self-destruct!"
Oh.
That angel.
Still, something was nagging me.
"Get Yui, she'll counter it."
"I will not allow her inside the closed Magi Network!" Ritsuko's voice came through shrill.
"Then get typing, doctor! Because you're the only one who can program an alternative! Make a code that makes the angel self-destruct through his adaptability! I'll get Yui anyway, in case you're too late!"
"What are-" and communications cut off abruptly like that.
Oh, right. The Angel blocked communications too.
I rushed forth after that, gritting my teeth as I jumped past a railway and straight through the empty road.
There were few cars in Tokyo-Three, and none at that particular time of the day.
As I rushed my way to the school, I looked at the sky.
Well, it wasn't going to fall now, was-
Oh, you're kidding.
I phoned Yui.
Literally.
She had a phone built-in.
"Yes, big brother?" Yui chirped.
"Acquire control of the satellites, check for foreign objects in space. And get ready to leave."
"A moment."
A blink of an eye later.
"There is a foreign object coming down on...is that an Angel?"
Twin angel attack.
Check.
"All right, listen up. Get Asuka and Rei, Angel alert. Reach my car and wait for me. I'll drive you there immediately."
So that had been what was 'wrong'.
I reached the school's parking lot in time to find all three girls around my car, Rei quietly waiting, Asuka with her arms crossed in front of her chest, and Yui apparently looking around for me in eager wait.
"Big brother!" Yui waved.
I opened the car. "Get in quick!"
"Why isn't section two taking us there?!" Asuka asked as she got in all the same.
"Because an Angel's attacking their mainframe, so they've lost communications with the outside."
I revved up the engine.
"What are we needed for then?" Asuka asked as I accelerated.
"Well, there's a second angel coming down on a course of collision with Earth, and this one's as big as an asteroid. You'll have to take him out using three AT-Fields combined. Unless one of you has the Lance of Longinus hidden somewhere?"
"The Commander Ikari wished for me to retrieve it," Rei said. "I never did, because he died."
"Excellent..." I said sarcastically as I took a left where I clearly shouldn't have -thankfully, there were no cars. "Yui! Give me an ETA for the asteroid!"
"Twenty-five minutes," Yui said primly. "It will directly hit Tokyo-Three...but," she frowned. "Two previous hits are confirmed in the world...he was triangulating his fall, why weren't we warned?"
"Communication black-out, Seele method," I said. "They're going with the final solution then," I hissed out. "Check the Satellites for incoming aircraft in Tokyo-Three."
"Incoming...aircraft?" Yui frowned, and did so.
"Look at the shadows on the terrain, they might be cloaked."
Yui remained quiet a moment more.
"Ah," she blinked. "I see."
"So?"
"Three incoming signatures. ETA ten minutes."
"HIp-Hip hurray, armageddon!"
I looked ahead of me. "Listen up girls! Here's what it's going to be. Yui, get the Magi system back online. Asuka, Rei, mount up the Eva. Yui will join you as soon as possible. You'll have fifteen minutes to deal with three manufactured EVA, then regroup and use your combined AT-Field to take care of the remaining Angel up in the sky. It should be an easy thing!"
"Affirmative," Rei said quietly.
I looked at Rei with a flicker, and then back at the street.
"Yui," I said calmly. "Whatever happens, get everyone in the Eva."
Yui blinked, and looked at me.
Then she looked at the road.
Then she screamed as I pushed the pedal of the accelerator to the max.
I've always wanted to do it.
There was an UN roadblock ahead of us.
...
Really, I knew these months of peace should have been a preclude to something bigger, but I hadn't given it weight. Now that weight was coming down to crush us all.
"GERONIMOOO!"
They had tanks, and they opened fire. Fun fact about tank shells is that they're not Hollywood like.
The concrete blew up around us, as the loud sounds cracked the windows of the car.
But I wasn't aiming at the tanks, I aimed at the guardrail.
...
Fly...
Fly~
Flying to our doom~
We landed with a strong 'crash' against the below road, and the tiles exploded as I could hear the girls' screams.
I could feel some of my bones and muscles protest the impact, but hey, Safety Belts are there for a reason.
The car grinded on the concrete, sparks sailed in the air, but I kept going forward, teeth gritted.
"Status check!"
"Alive, you mad man!" Asuka screamed.
"I am fine," Rei remarked.
"Can I murder Seele now?" Yui asked.
"Go at it," I replied with a low hiss.
They wanted Third Impact that badly, uh.
Well, I'd give them an impact all right.
"Yui, you get point once inside. The base might also have been breached, so I don't know what you can expect, but..."
"I'll take care of it," Yui said firmly. "Kensuke knows surprisingly good books."
"I'll have a talk with him later then."
"Is this the moment to be talking about improper relationships?!" Asuka screamed, and I laughed.
"Why not?" I replied.
As we neared the Nerve headquarters entrance, I narrowed my eyes again.
The doors were open.
The UN guards stationed outside were fine, but...
"They've already dealt with most of the Nerv personnel inside," Yui said softly. "I'm looking at the cameras feedback. The only ones still alive are in the command center, but..."
"Well then, Yui..." I stopped the car as it 'slid' a few last meters towards the base's entrance. "It's your gig now. Go get them, Battle-Loli!"
As Yui stepped outside, Asuka exclaimed, "What? You can't be seriously-"
When Yui vented a beam of hot plasma from her mouth the next moment, Asuka's hair rose from the heat as the girl's eyes widened liked saucers.
Rei made an apt "Oh" followed by shocked silence.
I stepped out afterwards, and began to walk towards the entrance. "Yui."
"I'm on it," Yui remarked, taking point and rushing ahead.
She was fast.
She jumped in mid-air, executed a perfect Mary-Sue like spin, and broke away the head of the still alive guard nearby.
Before grabbing the rifle from the guard's body -who was jettisoning blood like a geyser- and opening fire on the shocked survivors nearby.
"Area clear!" Yui snapped.
"I'm definitely having a talk with Kensuke later," I remarked.
Behind me, Asuka retched.
Rei merely watched, fascinated.
"We don't have time for this," I said firmly.
"S-She-S-She just!" Asuka babbled out as I raised an eyebrow.
"She's a battle-AI. What, you thought I was lying or something?"
"Yes!" Asuka screeched. "How did she even-you can't do that to a human body!"
Yui frowned. "I merely incremented the density of my limb post-spin to a kiloton, before lowering post-action before touching the ground in order to return to normal weight."
"That's got something to do with the blackhole technology, right?"
"Indeed, the mass-alteration is an important part of the entire programming. Without it, I'd probably self-implode into a singularity the size of which would wipe out all of creation."
"I hope your batteries never leak," I drawled out. "And you're ludicrous. Utterly broken. I hope you know that."
Yui nodded with a cheeky grin. "I'm adorably cute too~"
"You should be called Mary," I grumbled as I gestured for her to go right in.
"I've got the cameras," Yui said as we began to walk inside -Asuka trailing behind me and throwing worried glances Yui's way.
"That's why she was top of the class," Asuka mumbled. "She's a robot."
"No, she's an artificial intelligence," I retorted. "She is self-aware and capable of learning, hence, she's just like you...well, plus nifty gadgets."
Yui stopped on the elevator platform, and as we all got aboard, it quickly descended -way faster than usual.
"Shade," Yui said. "The base is crawling with soldiers. They turned on everyone they could and..."
I saw without her telling me. There were dozens of corpses, of scientists and of guards in equal amounts.
Thankfully Jane had jaded me to these sights, but unfortunately, while Rei remained emotionless, Asuka began to whimper.
"N-No."
"Asuka," I turned to look at her. She hugged herself tightly, and shook her head.
"I don't want to-"
"You know the safest place for you lot to be is your Eva, right?" I remarked.
Yui frowned. "And what about you?"
"Well, in the command outpost. I've got to check up on everyone else, and we don't really have time to waste thinking about where I'd be safer. You three, on Evas."
I grabbed Asuka by the shoulders and pushed her ahead of me. "You either run or I will push you, Asuka. Take your pick."
"G-Gah! I can run by myself you bastard!" Asuka exclaimed, and dashed off behind Yui.
Rei followed closely, if silently.
"This is not the future you saw," she said softly, and I grimaced as I nodded.
"Better this way," I remarked. "Means it can change for the better."
Rei didn't answer.
Yui was truly a battle-loli. Even if the bullets hit her, they never forced her into a state of 'Reboot' like I had managed with the chain. She was mostly 'flesh' after all, and somehow, if that tiny sphere actually could hold inside black holes, it must have been bulletproof at a minimum.
The problem were grenades.
I clamped both arms down hard on Rei and Asuka, and pulled them back and down as another grenade exploded, shoveling the metal fragments in the corridor with their deadly cargo. My ears were feeling stuffed too.
"God damn it!" I snarled. "We're wasting time!"
Yui kept firing, before changing mags with a fluidity I wouldn't have expected from anyone but Jane.
"Yui! PLASMA BEAM!"
"I might make everything fall on us!" Yui retorted.
"Well, it's that or the Angel's going to fall on our head and kill us all! Make a path with the power of plasma!"
"Affirmative!"
A ray of heat departed, and I closed my eyes to avoid being blinded.
"This way!" Yui exclaimed, and as I pulled both girls up, I pushed them in front of me and through the rapidly cooling path...
"Gah! It burns!" Asuka exclaimed, clutching a hand that had probably touched something it shouldn't have.
"Right ahead it's the Eva Hangars!" Yui yelled. "Go, go, go!"
"Kyah!" Asuka screamed as she dashed ahead, followed by Rei as I ran behind them both.
The hangar was in front of us.
The Evas were there.
And so too was the UN.
They lifted their rifles, aimed, and as they did, I threw both girls into the LCL liquid vat.
I wasn't that lucky.
...
Whenever was I lucky to begin with?
I fell back on the ground, this time, I was pretty sure there would be no last second save.
I was...I was going to die.
Really.
It was a wonder I was still conscious enough to think this through.
Yui screamed as she came in last, and I saw but a blur of dark clothes and hair as she probably snapped limbs and broke apart faces.
She was a truly good Battle-Loli, but again, she couldn't be everywhere.
Wasn't this supposed to be Misato's gig?
"You'll be all right," Yui remarked. "We just need some..."
"If...medigel...maybe," I coughed. "But it's not."
My chest was on fire.
My body felt cold.
My fingers unresponsive.
"G-Get the Eva...ready for launch," I coughed. "S-Stop the Angel...in the computer...and..."
Yui pushed hard on my wounds with her hands. "N-No! Stay with me!"
"It's...gah it hurts," I coughed out. "Ah...I see," I murmured. "I see the pits...of your evil."
I closed my eyes, tired, too tired to care.
Too tired to speak.
...
Too tired to listen.
I was dead.
...
Talk about breaking new ground in SI fiction, having the main character die.
...
I hate you.
Know that I hate you, and I will forever hate you.
...
...
...
The End
Author's Notes: Well guys, I've decided this was a good enough end for the Story. I mean, why would I ever continue this when it's clear this is the best arch ever? Let's end it like this, with a-
Uh, I'm hearing something str-
I doubt portals are supposed to happen.
Wait.
Wait a moment.
You can't be seriously telling me-
I opened my eyes.
Oh shit.
Oh god.
Oh no, no, no, no it was supposed to be a story, just a story, no no no no fuck no.
No, you can't seriously tell me that THIS IS THE ANSWER TO DEATH.
W-Whenever I die, a parallel me who's writing the story ends up...inside the story.
In my place.
No.
Fuck no
I...I am Shade, but...I'm the Writer-Shade.
This means.
...No, fuck it..
This means that when Yui will see me, she'll think I'm still alive.
But I'm not.
...
There's my CORPSE OVER THERE.
I...I spawned next to it.
...
Oh God this is sick.
This is sick.
No, no, this is too sick.
I can't. I think I'm going to retch.
Fuck it.
No, no, I'm not meant for this.
I'm not HIM. I'm no longer him.
He...He did all of that, and I'm not.
I'm not capable of being him.
We're two different persons now. We can never be...
THAT IS THE POINT.
"What."
HE WAS NO LONGER AN SI. HE WAS A NATIVE.
"Y-You've got to be kidding me! NO!"
SI diverge from their real self as they grow, as they experience hardships their normal selves would not experience. Hence, a need for a clean restart.
"Y-You're sick. You're a sick, twisted, degenerate bastard! That's not...You're not..."
IF THERE ARE COUNTLESS INFINITE UNIVERSE, THEN THERE EXISTS ONE WHERE I AM REAL. IF YOUR MIND BIRTHED ME, THEN A REALITY PROVED ME REAL.
"I...I want to go home."
THEN KILL THEM ALL. THAT IS ALL I-
"Wait." I blinked.
"No, Wait a second."
I looked around.
"OH. OH RIGHT. OH THANK YOU GOD."
I kicked the corpse away, and it turned into dust.
WHAT.
"You don't know, do you?" I said dryly, as I exhaled in relief. "You just went for a psychological attack. But this is Evangelion. When Shinji got found out by the UN in the original timeline, the last chapters went bullshit insane with mindscrewing moments. So, I can nullify it by saying that you're trying to MINDSCREW ME. Oh god, I thought I was a goner for once-"
NO. I DID-
"YOU'RE BOUND BY THE UNIVERSAL RULES OF THE WORLD YOU CHOOSE, PATHETIC BASTARD OF A SHIT FILLED GOD!" I snarled.
And then I began to clap.
"Did I do well?! Did I do well, world?! Clap! THIS IS EVANGELION. CLAPPING ENDS THE EPISODE!"
And as memory returned to me, I looked at the carnage left behind and at the empty LCL pools.
Well...
No choice but to believe in the children for a better tomorrow.
THEY WILL NEVER FIND YOUR CORPSE!
And as he said that, I blinked.
...
Fuck you.
Why.
Why the fuck.
Fuck you hard.
Fuck you so hard with a massive plasma weapon.
One clue.
I'm going to give you one clue on where I stand right now.
Then I'm going to scream like a little girl.
"Who are you?" the voice asked.
Ready for the clue? There was heavy breathing.
"Peace is a lie," I said as a greeting. "There is only passion."
Of course Darth Vader took that moment to turn on his lightsaber and stand at full attention.
...
Did I mention we were clearly on a space ship?
Mommy.
Battle-Loli.
Battle-Loli please respond.
Please Battle-Loli, respond.
... . ... . ... . You-You're a monster! ... . ... . ... .
... . ... . ... . They lost everyone! They needed him! ... . ... . ... .
... . ... . ... . You can't leave realities hanging like that! You can't! ... . ... . ... .
... . ... . ... . How dare you separate- ... . ... . ... .
... . ... . ... . A story with no hope is not a story worth writing! ... . ... . ... .
... . ... . ... . I will stop you, I swear I will! You'll see what I'll do! ... . ... . ... .
*Notice for the readers: what happened in the 'eva' end is most aptly translated as: there was a try at memory alteration, but Evangelion made sure it would not work...thank you, Evangelion, for having finished the funds at the last episodes.
