Blue Steel 2199: Arpeggio of Blue Steel/Space Battleship Yamato 2199 Crossover

Hey guys, they've announced who's voicing Yamato (and I assume Kotono if she appears) in the upcoming Arpeggio of Blue Steel: Ars Nova Cadenza movie:

Mai Nakahara cast as Yamato in Upcoming Arpeggio of Blue Steel: Ars Nova Cadenza film

The new characters (with voices) are as follows:

Mai Nakahara (Mai, Mai-HiME) as Yamato
Jouji Nakata (Frakken in 2199, Alucard in Hellsing Ultimate, and the narrator in Arpeggio of Blue Steel) as Shouzou Chihaya
Rie Kugimiya (Shana, Shakugan no Shana, Al (both series of Fullmetal Alchemist) as Musashi

Hiei and the Fog Student Council will also appear in the movie, slated for an October 3 release in Japan.

I first became aware of Arpeggio of Blue Steel when I was at the Shinjuku Piccadilly Theater in Tokyo two years ago for the final chapter of Yamato 2199. The Blue Steel trailer with Jouji narrating was playing both at it and the live-action Gatchaman film that opened the same weekend. So to me it kinda makes sense now that Jouji would turn out to be Chihaya's old man.

That thought ought to make it really interesting when Zordan Stark gets schooled by Wolf Frakken. The voice alone would be enough to throw Zordan off-balance!

...
I guess in FMA, the JP VA for Al sounded feminine.
I wouldn't know, I never watched the JP dub.

Not so much, but Al is pretty young (what, 11 or 12?), it's not uncommon for younger male characters in anime to be voiced by female voice actors in Japan. The Japanese producers believe female voice actors can get the tone of the characters better.

Found this interesting site linked in the CosmoDNA FB page.

Has a bunch of SBY ships, but this one's really interesting.

*snip big pic*
The Gamilon influences are obvious, but there's also the Gatlantean roundel turrets. Thoughts?
more than that- certain bits are very Gatlantian in design, such as the fore-mounted torpedo (I assume) tubes- and we know Zwordar had Gamilon scientists to create the Flame Strike Cannon. perhaps these are Gatlantian-designed ships developed by their captured Gamilon dev teams?
it would certainly explain the apparent blending of Gatlantain and Gamilon design sensibilities, at least.

Chapter 30
Blue Steel 2199 Chapter 30: Perceptions

Commander Konauer Kluth of the Gamilas Imperial Space Fleet paused a moment. His status was both exalted and repugnant. Exalted with the honor of being in service to She of Iscandar, yet repugnant with the shame of being captured by the Terron savages. Now he was charged by Princess Sasha to challenge his perceptions. At the time it had seemed like being asked to test the truth of gravity. For what other than barbarians could have fired upon the exploratory squadron that had first discovered this backwater system? Who other than the truly mad would keep hopelessly fighting? Who other than the insane would condemn their world to ash?

And so he stood here, both agent and prisoner to this "Mental Model". This being whom he found indecipherable. What exactly was she? Both guard and guide. His protector and jailer. It was so laughably insane.

Across the Far Eastern District, other Gamilon soldiers, all Zaltzi such as himself, were being escorted about at the request of Princess Sasha. Naturally the Terrons would be very careful what they would be allowed to see. Yet there still might be things that an alert eye might discern. But right now Kluth's attention was fully upon his escort. The Mental Model who was practically buried under her huge coat.

Haruna for her part was somewhat perplexed by Yamato's request for her involvement in this project. Princess Sasha had requested guides to assist the Gamilon soldiers who had pledged to her service. The intent was for them to observe the working daily lives of Earth's inhabitants. In the end it was deemed necessary for mental models to act as guides since they would also be required to act as protection for their charges for obvious reasons. Haruna supposed that her duties with the battle fleet would take precedence but it would take time for enough of the Fog heavy units to undergo conversion. Kongo was working with Admiral Hijikata and the rest of combined fleet staff to formulate the first offensives of this war but that too would take time. As a result Haruna supposed she had time to carry out the Supreme Flagship's request.

As she looked across to the bustling marketplace, Haruna addressed the Gamilon, "Why?"

The question took Kluth by surprise. "I don't understand?"

"Why did you come here?" Haruna repeated her question quietly.

"We came as explorers." He eyed her carefully. The Terrons had started the war. That was simple fact. He failed to see the point in arguing the matter to those who could not or would not see either fact or reason.

"Explore: To traverse for the purpose of discovery," Haruna recited. "I was not aware that discovery required murder."

Kluth inhaled sharply. "Terrons chose to fire upon our ships and Terrons choose to continue this war. "

"And if Earth had not fired the first shots?" Haruna asked.

"Then Gamilas would have offered your world peace and security in the Empire."

"Either submission or destruction then. That is why you cannot understand." Haruna turned to face Kluth squarely. "You assume there can be no other choice. And that is why it does not matter how this war started."

"Between civilization and barbarism. What other choice can there be? I fight to protect the peace on all the civilized worlds of the Empire."

"A Terron once wrote that 'Peace without Freedom is Slavery'," Haruna replied. Her voice went very quiet as she added, "That is why we will fight."

Kluth considered this but shook his head. Zaltz had resisted for a time but they had come to see the inevitable. In accepting this, his people had adapted and survived. His son would have a life. What sort of life did these people expect for their children? Still, that was not the only question in his mind.

"You asked me 'why'. Now I ask a question."

"Yes?"

"Who? Who are you? You are obviously not Terron. So are your kind their servants or their masters?"

A thin smile played on Haruna's lips. "The Fog are of Earth. And we are neither slave or master. We are equals." She saw his confusion at her answer. "On the day your people understand this truth, then this war will end."

For all the Fog once saw themselves as being logical in addition to being weapons, that really isn't true any more is it? Were they infected by humanity's collective insanity and contradictory nature at some point? It certainly seems like it.

The saddest part about this is that it took a lot of spilt blood and destroyed Union Cores before they finally made peace. Even sadder is that after a century of peace, bigots like Serizawa still live. Ah well, the point was still made, although I do wonder why it's only Mental Models acting as guides/guards instead of both humans and Mental Models.

I'd have to say that's because if for some reason the true identity of the Zaltzi slipped, then only a Mental Model would have the ability to save him from an outraged mob.

Kiyone, fantastic chapter. Haruna delivering some home truths, even with a single, awesome referral to her dictionary.

"Explore: To traverse for the purpose of discovery," Haruna recited. "I was not aware that discovery required murder."

To everyone in general (I know skaianDestiny does go over to CDNA from time to time so he'll know already) but the Shoji Nishizaki interview from the July Yamato Crew Ship's Log magazine regarding the next chapter in Yamato 2199 production should be translated in time for Saturday's update at ourstarblazers.com.

Eh, I would say that a squad or two of normal humans could probably protect Commander Kluth, but having a Mental Model as the guard makes it practically a guarantee unless the mob got a hold of high-power weaponry. Yeah, I can see that.

The Hollywood edition is being done overseas, so it's possible to make it concurrently. Skydance Productions will take charge of production this summer. After sending out Mission Impossible Rogue Nation and Terminator Genysis, they'll start on the script immediately, and it's planned to be completed within this year. Anyway, Director Christopher McQuarrie is quite a deep Yamato fan. He says he's been nursing the idea for 35 years, so it shouldn't take much time to complete the script.

Glad the director is a Yamato fan but the mention of Skydance's involvement does not fill me with confidence. Especially mentioning the latest MI film and Terminator Genysis both. The Mission Impossible movies are exciting and if the first one didn't spit in the face of all of the fans of the series, I'd probably enjoy this franchise (Cruise MI) even if it completely misses the essence and soul of the classic series. Terminator Genysis managed to completely twist the heart and soul out of what made the first two Terminator movies great.

So I am confident Hollywood will give us an exciting movie. But will it have the soul of Yamato? In an era where the latest Star Trek movie was sent back for script revision because it was "Too Star Trekky", color me worried.

Itou just got slightly more tolerable to me because of this manga chapter.

It was an interesting interpretation on what was going on in everyone else's heads. Not really a fan of the manga personally, myself, nor of Itoh.

Being a fan of the franchise doesn't guarantee a successful film. You just have to look at the Fantastic Four film that just came out to see proof of that. Personally, I have never wanted to see a live-action Star Blazers film after the first attempt wanted to call the Argo the Arizona of all ships (and probably might have wound up looking like the Arizona out of Yamato III rather than Yamato herself (which would have killed the fanbase).

For me, I was more interested in the future of the 2199 franchise. Not only are they planning to do the Yamato 2/Comet Empire remake in the style of 2199 in that it won't be a verbatim remake and may introduce more from the expanded Yamato universe, they're also looking at an eight-year plan to release three or four more projects. Some of which may not even involve Yamato or even Earth.

hmmmmm. interesting. three or four more projects, you say?

reminds me of the old rumor that Captain Harlock was originally supposed to be Mamoru Kodai. who'd succeeded in seizing the prison ship and escaped to take up piracy....

This worries me too.
And I'm a Trek fan as well. I know how bad things can get.
