Blue Steel 2199: Arpeggio of Blue Steel/Space Battleship Yamato 2199 Crossover

By the way, I know in the translation of that season, the Flagship of the Earth carrier force was identified in subtitle as Lexington. Was she ever identified in Japanese sources?

Let's be honest: I LOVED the Second season of Yamato back in the day but I am eager to see something better than "The Magna-Flame gun won't work in the deadly cold of Saturn's Ice Ring... I should have remembered that."

I think it will come down to whether the Megaluda is mass-produced (which would be hugely expensive), which would change the playing field if they had a whole fleet of them as far as countering their effectiveness like Yamato did in Ark, or whether the writers decide to bring in something entirely different in terms of Gatlantean trump card (the Gatlantis fortress notwithstanding).

While I don't think they're massed-produced, I'm sure they have a couple as fleet flagships.

That's always possible. The creators also expressed interest in bringing stuff from later seasons, so we could see an early Dark Nebula or even Bolar introduction (it'd be funny if Dessler was rescued by Galmans instead of Gatlantis this season).

Megaluda is a prototype; they only got the SMITE technology very very recently (i.e. they captured Garmillas scientists who worked on the project; this is explicitly stated in one of the "Secret Files" handed out at Japanese cinemas screening the movie).

They could be planning to produce in large numbers as a capital ship; so far, it is the only capital ship in the Gatlantean forces that we've seen. By the time the events of the next series come around, they may have produced a sizable number of them.

Not sure how they'd set up the Galmans in the 2199 universe; in the original, Galman was the ancestral homeworld of the Gamilas, and Gamilas itself was destroyed. Perhaps a group of Garmillans still blindly loyal to Desler, despite his act of barbarism towards his own people? While I have no doubt we'll see him in the next series, I too will be curious as to how he's used. This Desler is slightly less sane than the previous incarnation.

I think it would be interesting to send a foreshadow of the Dark Nebula in the same way as was done with Gatlantis in 2199.

For me though, the big question will be Teresa. What is her form going to be, and her back story? I can't help but wonder if they were foreshadowing something in Ark by using Teresa's Theme from Yamato 2 in the score.

Well they already demonstrated anti-FSG tactics in the movie. Sure it's only 70% accurate, but it's better than 0%.

Yeah, but if they have any reasonable number of them, their effectiveness increases again, especially if the Earth fleet is in a tight formation.

By the way, I know in the translation of that season, the Flagship of the Earth carrier force was identified in subtitle as Lexington. Was she ever identified in Japanese sources?

Not beyond being a carrier. If you saw Yamato 2 subtitled it will be a fansub, and the moniker Lexington is, IIRC, a name given from the Star Blazers Fleet Battle System RPG, so whoever wrote the subs took the liberty of using the FBS game's names for the ships. In Japanese sources, the only EDF ship in Yamato 2 with a name is Andromeda.

Thing is that when I first watched, I was watching the Star Blazers dubs which recut certain things. The worst offender was at the end of the Saturn Battle where 'Argo' finally arrives. Those scenes were so badly mangled that I did not know that the Earth Carrier force had literally been plowed over by the 'Comet'. It was thirty years before I saw the scenes as they were supposed to be.

For me, probably closer to twenty years, having unwittingly bought a bootleg DVD sub of the three series (back in my more naive days).

I hope they do with the second series what they did with the first - release a remastered Blu-Ray set when the next series in the 2199-verse comes out. Even without subs, I'll snatch that one up when the price is right.

Chapter 32 Determination
Blue Steel 2199, Chapter 32: Determination

We failed.

The admission burned in Brigadier Schulz's brain. Shame, regret, fear...

I failed. He corrected himself. His men had fought with resolve and all the skill anyone in the service of Gamilas could ask. A charitable soul would have pointed out that this was true in his case as well, but charity was in short supply out here, and besides... he was in command. All that mattered. The shame of his men and the shame that would soon be visited upon his family was his shame. His failure. Had Schulz been a coward, it would have been a simple matter to end it. To turn his sidearm and press it to his temple and pull the trigger. But even in shame, the responsibilities of command and the obligations of duty had to be carried on. It was a burden he could not toss upon the shoulders of another. His men still needed him to act as their commander. It was what Domel had taught:

Loyalty is not given, it is earned and it must be returned measure for measure. As a soldier pledges his loyalty to his officers, they in accepting that loyalty are indebted to him. Obligated to demonstrate that loyalty in turn. That an officer could not order someone to carryout a task that he himself would not do. That if he must spend their lives in battle, that it must not be done wantonly or wastefully.

Schulz would not fail that measure. He could do no more and no less than to follow that course to the bitter end. Of course he could have and some might argue he should have assumed command at their remote base. A last conceit to pride perhaps but the base would be safe for now. The fight was here and he could not leave it to another.

He replayed the last message he had gotten from his daughter, Hilde.

I am sorry Hilde. Lord Dessler has ordered that we fight and die. Oh how I long to be there with you and your mother. But if you are to have any kind of future, I must accept the fate that awaits me.

The voice of his chief of staff interrupted his thoughts.

"Sir! General Goer's resupply ship has arrived!" A slight spark of hope lit inside Schulz as he replied: "I'm on my way." Perhaps....just perhaps our death has not been preordained after all!

Main Briefing Room, Ars Nova...

Newly minted Captain Ryotaro Okita sat in the front row in the audience of officers that Fleet Commander Kongo had assembled. Beside him sat his new first officer, Nachi. The rumor mill had it that Nachi was going to be in the next group of Fog ships to be reconfigured for duty in space. So which one of us is being tested here? Ryotaro wondered.

Probably both of us. He concluded. His father was fond of reminding him that every interaction traveled in two directions. A good teacher should learn from his students as well as teach them. Still; whatever the future held, his new first officer was a work in progress. She was efficient and quick to carry out orders. What she lacked was confidence and assertiveness. As her Captain, it was his duty to help her find those traits within her.

Presently, Kongo strode with a blend of grace and purpose to the podium.

"Members of First Strike Fleet: With the Space Battleship Yamato now safely beyond the confines of our solar system, it is now time for us entrusted by them to protect Earth in their absence to begin the campaign to regain our space from the invaders.

"Today we take the first small step in reclaiming our honor and our pride." She announced. "During Operation 'M'. the destroyer Yukikaze was damaged and made forced landing on Saturn's moon Enceladus. Survivors from the Yukikaze were recovered but the ship and the remains of her fallen crewmembers are still there. We are going to Enceladus and we will recover our fallen. We retreat no more!" Kongo declared.

The resounding cheers by all rights should have shattered Ars Nova by their sheer intensity. Kongo turned the briefing over to Admiral Nye and immediately went to her Chief of Staff, the Fast Battleship Hiei.

"Has General Inoue responded to our inquiries about when we can expect Colonel Higashikuni's Marines?"

Hiei glowered even more than her usual wont (If such a thing was possible.) "He says that he cannot release his Marines without authorization from General Serizawa. General Serizawa's aide says that in the General's opinion, 2nd Marine Assault Battalion is unfit for combat at this time."

"Very sudden this." Kongo murmured. "And the Engineers?"

"The engineering team says they will need another two weeks to be ready."

Kongo's eyebrow rose. Interference from Serizawa, she had half expected. Incompetence was another matter.

"Hiei? Tell the Commander of Engineers that I am sending South Dakota and her Chief of staff to assist him. The departure schedule will be met or I will send him to Enceladus on momentum alone. The mines there are a vital war resource."

Hiei nodded. "And the Marines?"

"General Serizawa has made his inspection. I will make one of my own. Let us see what the Colonel and his men have to say as to whether they are ready for battle or not..."

So, who's heard the official news?

Yamatocrew.jp announced that the new series of 2199 is now entering full production and the March Ship's Log newsletter will include "an exclusive interview with the person who holds the key to the new series". This will be translated for the April update on ourstarblazers.com

This is great news!

Great! Now we might get more 1/1000 scale models of the EDF, Galantis, and Gamilias fleets...

I'd say it's a certainty there will be more 1/1000 kits associated with the new series.

Personally, I'm hoping they bite the bullet and give us the 1/1000 Megaluda. And just maybe the 1/1000 Desura II main ship.

The 1/1000 Earth Fleet ships, including Andromeda, are a certainty.

A 1/500 Andromeda would be fantastic, but I'm guessing that will come down to how big they make her this time.

How much bigger was OS Andromeda compared to OS Yamato?

Marginally. 275 meters to Yamato's 263.

However, that doesn't preclude them from deciding to make larger ships to combat the larger enemy ships they encountered.

I thought back during 2199's production, that if Yamato's length was intended to be equal to the height of Tokyo Tower (333m, which was the originally planned size in the original series but was overridden by producer Yoshinobu Nishizaki who said it had to be the resurrected WWII battleship), then why not have Andromeda's length based on the height of Tokyo Tower's replacement, the Skytree? That would put it at around 634 meters (to the top of the spire) or 495 meters (height of the Skytree's roof).

Not saying they would do that, but there could be any number of reasons they might. A massive 63.4 cm 1/1000 kit might be one such reason. After all, the 1/1000 Domelaze proved there's a market for it. And with Andromeda, it's the second most popular ship in the saga, so there will be demand for a super-huge one.

Alright then, looks like I got to get back writing XCOM/Yamato fic again...
