Blue Steel 2199, Chapter 32: Determination
We failed.
The admission burned in Brigadier Schulz's brain. Shame, regret, fear...
I failed. He corrected himself. His men had fought with resolve and all the skill anyone in the service of Gamilas could ask. A charitable soul would have pointed out that this was true in his case as well, but charity was in short supply out here, and besides... he was in command. All that mattered. The shame of his men and the shame that would soon be visited upon his family was his shame. His failure. Had Schulz been a coward, it would have been a simple matter to end it. To turn his sidearm and press it to his temple and pull the trigger. But even in shame, the responsibilities of command and the obligations of duty had to be carried on. It was a burden he could not toss upon the shoulders of another. His men still needed him to act as their commander. It was what Domel had taught:
Loyalty is not given, it is earned and it must be returned measure for measure. As a soldier pledges his loyalty to his officers, they in accepting that loyalty are indebted to him. Obligated to demonstrate that loyalty in turn. That an officer could not order someone to carryout a task that he himself would not do. That if he must spend their lives in battle, that it must not be done wantonly or wastefully.
Schulz would not fail that measure. He could do no more and no less than to follow that course to the bitter end. Of course he could have and some might argue he should have assumed command at their remote base. A last conceit to pride perhaps but the base would be safe for now. The fight was here and he could not leave it to another.
He replayed the last message he had gotten from his daughter, Hilde.
I am sorry Hilde. Lord Dessler has ordered that we fight and die. Oh how I long to be there with you and your mother. But if you are to have any kind of future, I must accept the fate that awaits me.
The voice of his chief of staff interrupted his thoughts.
"Sir! General Goer's resupply ship has arrived!" A slight spark of hope lit inside Schulz as he replied: "I'm on my way." Perhaps....just perhaps our death has not been preordained after all!

Main Briefing Room, Ars Nova...
Newly minted Captain Ryotaro Okita sat in the front row in the audience of officers that Fleet Commander Kongo had assembled. Beside him sat his new first officer, Nachi. The rumor mill had it that Nachi was going to be in the next group of Fog ships to be reconfigured for duty in space. So which one of us is being tested here? Ryotaro wondered.
Probably both of us. He concluded. His father was fond of reminding him that every interaction traveled in two directions. A good teacher should learn from his students as well as teach them. Still; whatever the future held, his new first officer was a work in progress. She was efficient and quick to carry out orders. What she lacked was confidence and assertiveness. As her Captain, it was his duty to help her find those traits within her.
Presently, Kongo strode with a blend of grace and purpose to the podium.
"Members of First Strike Fleet: With the Space Battleship Yamato now safely beyond the confines of our solar system, it is now time for us entrusted by them to protect Earth in their absence to begin the campaign to regain our space from the invaders.
"Today we take the first small step in reclaiming our honor and our pride." She announced. "During Operation 'M'. the destroyer Yukikaze was damaged and made forced landing on Saturn's moon Enceladus. Survivors from the Yukikaze were recovered but the ship and the remains of her fallen crewmembers are still there. We are going to Enceladus and we will recover our fallen. We retreat no more!" Kongo declared.
The resounding cheers by all rights should have shattered Ars Nova by their sheer intensity. Kongo turned the briefing over to Admiral Nye and immediately went to her Chief of Staff, the Fast Battleship Hiei.
"Has General Inoue responded to our inquiries about when we can expect Colonel Higashikuni's Marines?"
Hiei glowered even more than her usual wont (If such a thing was possible.) "He says that he cannot release his Marines without authorization from General Serizawa. General Serizawa's aide says that in the General's opinion, 2nd Marine Assault Battalion is unfit for combat at this time."
"Very sudden this." Kongo murmured. "And the Engineers?"
"The engineering team says they will need another two weeks to be ready."
Kongo's eyebrow rose. Interference from Serizawa, she had half expected. Incompetence was another matter.
"Hiei? Tell the Commander of Engineers that I am sending South Dakota and her Chief of staff to assist him. The departure schedule will be met or I will send him to Enceladus on momentum alone. The mines there are a vital war resource."
Hiei nodded. "And the Marines?"
"General Serizawa has made his inspection. I will make one of my own. Let us see what the Colonel and his men have to say as to whether they are ready for battle or not..."
