Blue Steel 2199: Arpeggio of Blue Steel/Space Battleship Yamato 2199 Crossover

Things are starting to get really moving, the launch of the Yamato is close at hand... Hm, does sending those Gamilon units mean that the "Giant Missle of Dhooom" plot device is being dropped, or was there also another stronger attack (aside from the "agressive reconaissance" Carrier probe Yamato just shot down) in the 2199 anime before the GMDh was launched?

Now we'll have to see how fast Admiral Dzeer reacts to the new developments. If Schulz dies or gets captured when the EDF/Yamato gets to "Plat", that will probably significantly slow any new intelligence being passed up the chain from Goer (or around him, as it were. :drevil:) to "higher authority" at Baleras, or whereever the next node in the command chain is after Goer.

We'll see what kind of WTF moments the Gamilons will experience soon, I reckon.

I did have a thought about the "Mirror Ring" system- if the ship is properly constructed, it shouldn't (or at least hopefully wouldn't) burn out the system when used. IIRC though, it re-radiates the absorbed energy pretty much as an AoE blast, so it appears to only be usable for a unit (of BC or BB, or greater- Dreadnought?) with a significant volume of space free of friendlies/neutrals. While I realize its faaar in the future, Gatlantis's superweapon might be "no-selled" by the Mirror Ring. It does appear capable of fairly rapid fire though, no idea if the MR would be up to that.

The missile plot had to be dropped when I postulated that no such missile could possibly get past the upper stratosphere in the face of Fog civil defense. bombers are small and agile enough to be useful. Fleet units were not a preferred choice because of the risk of being caught in an extended engagement over Earth's defenses, but there's not much choice.

And those aren't even Zenseava's best works either.

The Amagi -might- just end up in 2199'spoilers sequel series, as Zenseava has, iirc, been hired as a designer for the show.

There's some escorts if you want them. And about the only way they'd work is via being 'parasite' hulls, that would require connecting directly to the Yamato, whenever an FTL jump were required.

And a non-WMG equipped hull, which is nothing more then a 'jeep' carrier (single non-angled flight deck).
. . . . wow I know it says something about me but looking at these gave me tingles in my happy place.

We WILL see that Amagi with some added Fog tech in THIS story VERY soon. Except the First three ships will be named Repulse, Takao, and Maya.

CARNIVAL!

Chapter 23
Blue Steel 2199: Part 23, Fog of Battle

"We've heard reports that claim that most of the crew was killed in yesterday's bombing." The American President stated with concern.

Okita folded his arms in a gesture of confidence and calm. "No casualties were sustained. We are fully ready and will be moving up the launch time. We set sail in seventy-two hours. Off to the side, General Serizawa frowned, being forced to suppress a snort of derision at Okita's lie. Supreme Flagship Yamato smiled confidently out at her fellow world leaders.

"The Fog will be easily be able to supply the energy required to initialize Yamato's wave motion core.

The other leaders seemed satisfied at these explanations. The representative from the European Union summed up their collective feelings.

"All of our hopes go with you and your crew, Admiral."

Okita nodded.

"Be that as it may." Supreme Flagship noted. "And we heartily agree... but the Yamato plan is only part of the solution to our situation."

The American President nodded. "You are referring to Operation Olympic."

"Precisely..."

Near Ganymede, task force rendez-vous point, Gamilon Task Force Shrike.

Captain Molke watched as the last of Third squadron's ships slotted into formation ahead of his carriers. He had no doubt the target would be destroyed. The only question is how much the Terrons were going to extract in payment. The loss of the Galdera had come as a bitter blow to the crews aboard the other Gamilon carriers. Molke planned to send the cruisers of Third squadron in escorted by half his available destroyers and have his strike planes follow them in while the carriers and the remaining destroyers kept an eye out for Earth's mobile forces. His task force could tear an awful swathe through the surviving EDF fleets, but was too small to bear the brunt of their fire in a running battle. He would have to engage and destroy his objective quickly and get out.

"All ships in attack formation!" Molke's second in command reported. Standing by for Gestcham jump!"

"Jump on my mark..." Molke ordered. "Five... four... three... two... one... Jump!"

"Situation report!" Admiral Hijikata ordered as he entered Kirishima's bridge.

"Command reports a Gamilon task force just appeared on scanners Five light seconds out!" The communications tech called out.

"Numbers and type?"

"Tycho Base reports five carriers, four battleships, ten cruisers, and twentyfour destroyers."

"Not enough to take on the entire fleet." Captain Yamanami noted. "A heavy raiding force then?"

Hijikata nodded. "The only possible target they could be after is Yamato. The Admiral picked up a mic. "Put me through to command. Also raise Flagship, First Battle Squadron and Yamato."

The tech hurriedly worked over his board. "Ready sir!"

The face of Admiral Todo appeared on the Kirishima's command viewer, then the image split with Admiral Okita in the upper left. Kongo responded from the lower right first.

"The enemy must be kept away from Yamato. I suggest that First and Second Squadrons attack directly while Admiral Hijikata's ships lead available EDF forces against the enemy rear."

Hijikata's face curled into a hungry grin at what Kongo was suggesting. Okita said nothing, but his eye twinkled in satisfaction.

"Don't destroy them too fast." Hijikata commented. The rest of us occasionally have the urge to save the world also."

Kongo waved a hand dismissively. "Of course. I have learned it is bad form to end a party before all the guests arrive. My scanners indicate the enemy task force is dividing, with the carrier group trailing the battle force. The carrier force is yours Admiral."

Hijikata nodded. "Too kind Kongo. Too kind."

"EDF Battleship Maryland is scrambling with Task Force 34. Admiral Nye is in command." Todo noted as he read the message flimsy just handed him. "Warspite is hailing, as is Potemkin."

"Kirishima and all available First Fleet ships will rendezvous and then sweep around the enemy while Kongo drives them." Hijikata declared.

"This is not the battle for Earth." Kongo declared. "The Battle of Nations is at hand."

In his office, General Serizawa decided this was the time to mobilize his trump card. In the flury of ships launching, one more would hardly merit notice.

"Commence Operation Sho...."

Ho, ho, the Gamilons are in for a rude awakening...

Serizawa activates his Eevuul Plan. *boo! Hiss!*

Am I right in expecting some of the tension and drama in the story to stem from the fact that much of the Yamato's crew will be hastily assembled replacements, and thus mostly unprepared for the demands and sacrifices the mission will demand of them?

Not more than in the original. The destruction of the bunker occurred in episode 2 of 2199 with no survivors, but it seemed natural that Murusame be there, so she survives and saved one person who was originally shown as killed in that scene. There will definitely be new conflicts of course. Security officer Itou will be getting along most poorly with his new boss, who thinks his people have better things to do than loiter around hatches.

Heh heh.

Big Booms.

Me like.

Note that Nelson and Maryland have their main guns (and superstructure to some extent) arranged in the same shape as their forebears.

It's a shame Maryland was not preserved. I believe the sticking point on her salvation was on whether the state of Maryland should pay for the fuel to get the ship from the West Coast to Baltimore.

Agreed. I can understand Tennessee or West Virginia or Colorado or South Dakota. No place to park a battleship in their namesake states. But losing California, Maryland, and Washington? Criminal. Washington was declined by her namesake state because Missouri was in mothballs at Bremerton at the time and state officials thought they could get a cheaper deal on the slightly more famous Missouri.

:facepalm::facepalm::facepalm:

Just. this.

IT'S YOUR OWN STATE!!!!

YOUR OWN BATTLESHIP!!!!

WTF?!?!?!?!?!

Why the ***** would you take another state's battleship?!?!?!?!?!?!?!?!

Especially one that's still active!!

Ranking right up there with the Governor of Oregon giving back their preserved battleship to the navy after Pearl Harbor because it's a battleship right? And some low level idiots accepting her... not as a convoy escort (Silly enough that was) but as common scrap. by the time anyone high enough up with a brain catches on, the damage is done and the famous battleship USS Oregon finishes her days as an ammunition hulk at Guam before being towed back to the US and scrapped.

It was Texas, as I recall, that took the opposite tack, and actually commissioned their battleship into the state National Guard, when setting it up as a museum...

Maryland is the one in the bottom right corner.

Being bored, I scaled the ships in the image based on the 152 meter length of the Shimayuki.

Kitakami: 172.1 meters / 564 feet 7.6 inches (488 pixels)
Kongo: 207.37 meters / 680 feet 4.2 inches (588 pixels)
Maryland: 271.91 meters / 891 feet 1.08 inches (771 pixels)
Mutsu: 262.03 meters / 859 feet 8.16 inches (743 pixels)
Nelson: 271.91 meters / 891 feet 1.08 inches (771 pixels)
Sawayuki: 153.41 meters / 503 fee 3.72 inches (435 pixels)
Shimayuki: 152 meters / 498 feet 8.28 inches (431 pixels)
Umigiri: 154.12 meters / 505 feet 7.68 meters (437 pixels)

Note: Edited based on this quote:

The Kongo shown in the picture is actually slightly longer considering it has a full cone instead of a bow gun. You're better off using the Shimayuki as it is basically the same as the standard Murasame-class.
