Blue Steel 2199: Arpeggio of Blue Steel/Space Battleship Yamato 2199 Crossover

Actually, the design of Yamato makes the most sense if the basic form was directly patterned after a Fog ship. Basing your new ship after the most powerful ships you have access to makes sense. While any self respecting Fog ship would insist on better firing coverage, the hull form still has to fit the fighter and small craft bay . Best compromise possible I suppose

Hopefully Yamato will object to having dangly bits. The 3rd bridge was never more than a cheap drama device. :p

If I was the Yamto, I'd, at the very least, demand to replace the Third Bridge with another turret. Sure, there are missile tubes down there, but since the Yamato is a Fog vessel and already has excellent sensor coverage, there's no need for a Third Bridge! There's no need for any Bridge, really. A Fog sails itself. A Second Bridge is already overkill.

Actually, given some of the things hinted about yam-head?

She wouldn't mind having a third bridge at all-more room for her crew (and her hobbies)!!

Yes, for your fic, basing the hull on a "fog" ship that echoed human naval architecture does actually fit. My comment was more directed at the original concept.

If you're sticking with Mental Models who appeared in the anime only for the ones who went to sleep, then you should know that Yamato doesn't appear. At all. That being said, I was looking at the code names and noticed a few things.

K

K2

Y

Now, both Kongou and Krishima have appeared in your snips so far, so they might cover K and K2. Y on the other hand matches almost perfectly with Kirishima's teddy bear form, Yotarou (IIRC).

Did... Did Haruuna do some experimentation while Kirishima while she was asleep?!

Serizawa's involvement was known to senior officers in the original SBY 2199 timeline. Okita certainly knows. But apparently the incident was covered up to protect morale once the war started.

In the end, Serizawa just might get his this time.
Surviving and stopping the war comes first. After that? I'd say Serizawa is going to come to a messy end.
Sadly, if you know anything about the original series, Serizawa remained in power well past the Comet Empire arc, and was a thorn in the side of the Yamato's crew the entire time. He literally, LITERALLY, cannot believe his actions were at fault (he's a rampant human supremacist who thinks everyone ELSE fucked up), and has the political dirt needed on everyone else to keep himself in power.

IIRC during the Yamato's second voyage, he outright orders the Andromeda to stop the Yamato 'at all costs, by all means necessary, including deadly force'. Of course, the Yamato's crew being effectively Earth's saviors, the Andromeda just sails right by her and they trade salutes, while utterly/blatantly ignoring Serizawa's orders.

Reasons of Plot. Designated Antagonists. If they ever mention anything about how they weren't cashiered, it comes out to "politics/shenanigans".

The third bridge is the entrance to the ship as well as the Wave Motion shield and artificial gravity control room. It also houses the Ki-8 air boat.

Ourstarblazers.com - Ark of the Stars Mecha Guide said:
A special craft designed for planetary exploration. It was placed on board Yamato on the pretext of being a spare vehicle. Its common name is Kouno Tori [White Stork]. It is housed in the dome under the ship (forward of the third bridge), which is equipped with a pressurized hangar. Only a few crew members know of its existence. It carries a crew of five and the autonomous ship's analysis unit (AU-09).

It descends from space to a planet and can act freely in air, land and sea with prolonged exploration activity. Unlike a general spacecraft, its development concept from the beginning was as a planetary probe. Although its wings and robust hull make it an "airship," its wheels make it an all-purpose vehicle with submersible capability. It is covered by a reinforced canopy over the cockpit, protected by a roll bar. Its variable retractable wheels allow it to adjust its tread pattern to match road conditions, and its six-wheel drive provides off-road performance on uneven terrain. The folding main wings are equipped with multipurpose units. It can also be retrofitted with various equipment, including observation sensors and firearms to remove obstacles.

Interesting information.

Overall I considered the Yamato design to be made up of a bunch of compromises that by luck and circumstance happened to hit a design sweet spot. After all how would anyone even consider that having a high-tech anchor system would ever be used let alone be used as a grappling hook.

On the other hand the third bridge should have been blended with the overall structure so that it would not be a source of drag for those times when Yamato was used as a floating ship on liquid. If they were building an entirely new ship, they might have been better served by making the ship larger to give them enough internal volume and include other vehicles in the hangar.

Presumably the areas below the "waterline" are heavily armored and was mostly space for the hangar (so it could act like a carrier), storage and equipment space (due to the lack of supply lines), and missile manufacturing and storage space (again due to the lack of supply lines).

As an odd and non-canon effect, there was an old video game that was based on the original series that allowed you to micro-manage the Yamato in fights (with cut-scenes) that I remember playing. The presumed problems of limited weapons on the under side did not mean much for a good player even if the game was a 3-d environment. Basically all weapons had their own ranges, reload times, damage effects, etc. (you could also send out the cosmo fighters too though I preferred not to due to the cost in crewmen). There was also the rather powerful engine that allowed a certain tactical and strategic use that made weapon placement largely irrelevant. Basically I kept the engine at maximum, and spun the ship around bringing freshly loaded weapons to bear whenever any enemy entered into range of the available weapons (and can reliably hit) and any excess energy used for short bursts of evasive movements in a random direction (to avoid being hit with incoming missiles and throw off enemy weapon locks). With the cut-scenes (showing the ship swiveling all over the place and weapons firing), it kind of resembled the Death Blossom effect from The Last Starfighter movie. That game also had an in-game reason to deter firing off the main gun too (Basically aside from charging time delay, it does require having the engine charged up to 120% and firing it effectively damages that engine from the overcharge and requires repairs. While relatively quick to do, it not something you want in the middle of battle).

Pretty sure the Yamato can handle shield and gravity control herself.
Plus, if that's the case, there's no reason to put such a vitally important component of the ship's operation in a horribly exposed position.
Not to mention that, in 2199, the third bridge got blown to hell, and the shields were still working.

The 'rolling' maneuver was used during the Battle of Balan in the 2199 continuity, where the Yamato plunged into the midst of a fleet that was 10,000 ships strong. Admittedly, their objective was never to kill all the enemy ships, but to punch through the fleet to get at the jump gate that lead to Iscandar. They bought themselves some time by hiding in the gas giant that served as the jump gate hub, then they charged out, turned around, and blasted the gas giant with the Wave Motion Gun to cover their escape, disabling their recoil supressors to use the WMG to push them through the gate.

The resulting explosion wiped out 70% of the Gamillas fleet, and temporarily left the survivors unable to give pursuit. :D

I will never get tired of that episode.

A bit off topic, but are there any good SBY stories using another ship? Or even more than one ship?

A story where Earth manages to construct more than one ship to make the trip, so you have a fleet composed of the Yamato, Arizona, Hood, Scharnhorst, and Imperatritsa Ekaterina Velikaya might be interesting.

There was an XCOM crossover that didn't get far using that premise.

The problem is the Iscandarians only sent 1 Wave Motion Core, so you can't really make more than one ship.

So using the Fleet's tech they make a few copies. If the copies aren't perfect that just means only the Yamato has the WMG, which would still work for the story. Especially if instead of say, the Arizona, they built the Wasp or the Yorktown, avoiding the silliness of the Yamato being a carrier as well as a battleship.

The Wave Motion Core powers the Yamato's FTL drive. And don't forget that they only received the Wave Motion Core at the start of the series, and they only had it for a few days before they launched the ship. And before you spout crap about analyzing and reverse engineering the Core, they only had a limited amount of time before Earth's shelters run out of resources. That's why they had such a tight schedule and why they wanted to launch nearly immediately.

Also I wouldn't want to mess with a technology that an obviously higher tech civilization sends us that also has a possibility to destroy the universe.

The Fog can already warp space and teleport things over distance, albeit items as small as a Union Core.

They said it was an issue of power. They don't have enough of it.

Er, "spout crap"?

I'm talking about something that might make for an interesting crossover fanfic between two properties that involve WWII battleships being rebuilt into futuristic, physics-ignoring dreadnaughts. So maybe a fictional Earth couldn't recreate the superextraspecialawesome Iskandarian technology, maybe in this theoretical story Iskandar managed to send more than one WM Core?

Is THAT ok?

You'd need a reason why Iskandar would send off more than one. Considering they know first-hand how devastating those things are when weaponized and how they very nearly decided not to give the Yamato that restoration device thingy because they had the Wave Motion Gun, I don't see why Starsha would send more than one.

Also, please stop ending your posts with that smiley. It makes your posts seem a lot more arrogant/hostile/pretentious than what I assume you really are.

In any case, in the spirit of alternate WWII ships, here's some pics:

And those aren't even Zenseava's best works either.

The Amagi -might- just end up in 2199'spoilers sequel series, as Zenseava has, iirc, been hired as a designer for the show.

There's some escorts if you want them. And about the only way they'd work is via being 'parasite' hulls, that would require connecting directly to the Yamato, whenever an FTL jump were required.

And a non-WMG equipped hull, which is nothing more then a 'jeep' carrier (single non-angled flight deck).

Nice! Wasn't there one that was the Great Yamato which had weapons underneath the hull?

And I would read a story like that by the way. Though it may have the same problem some BSG fics have when they add one or two extra warships to the Fleet in that they have too many characters due to having a few characters on each of the ships. But even then a general rewrite to Yamato fixing some of the errors I see with the series would be interesting.
