Bleach: Derailed

No.

I never said that Zangetsu stopped messing with his shikai's size.

Will this choice last for the entire 30 weeks?

I suppose that after 30 weeks of knife fighting in zanjutsu class, he'd be more profecient with that instead of a katana/big ass meat cleaver. So why would he change it back later?

The biggest divergence of Ichigo's fighting style till now.

Very well Zangetsu you'll have your wish :)

I'd say a reputation downside. I can't recall anyone else using shikai all the time. I might be wrong, but IIRC captains are forbidden to use shikai in SS except when there is war.
People don't use shikai all the time because they can't. Going around in permanent shikai isn't an indication that we're prepped for fighting, it's an indicator of ludicrous spiritual power. And captains aren't allowed to use Shikai except during cases of war because a good half of them are weapons of mass destruction or otherwise very inconvenient for everyday life (or a giant manta ray thing).

I actually really hope we start using the ribbon-spinny-thingy as it was meant to be used, to make up for our otherwise decreased range.

Although a fighting style based on being able to shapeshift Zangetsu would also be very cool.

I was under the impression that the focus of 'shit is too big' is still more on the Shikai than the unreleased state even if it applies to both, since that was even more clunky-big in canon and Shikai has been the focus of Zangetsu's yakkin' about sizeplay just now in the update- and that Shikai won't be coming with size changing until after we win the bet. So between an unshrunken Shikai and unreleased, unreleased is the less huge/less bad option, relative of the goal of 'no but seriously let's stop catching this on stuff'. If the Unreleased sword has the same level of/propensity for catching on things all ungainly like as the pre-size-shifting Shikai, then it'd be nice to have that confirmed by @TPK, but otherwise I'll assume it's less bad about it just based on my recollection of how big each looked in the manga and whatnot, and how the chapters after Ichigo first decided to keep it unreleased read (to me).

From what I remember both the Shikai and our unreleased form are around the same size, before the knife thing.

The thing is that we haven't made any progress whatsoever in shrinking our unreleased blade without Zangetsu's help. No visible progress except annoying Zangetsu. During the fight last update, Zangetsu, not Ichigo, trivially managed to make our Shikai smaller all on his own. What I concluded from this is that we NEED Zangetsu's help in order to shrink the size of our blade, which makes sense because he is the Sword Spirit and aspects of the Zanpakuto are something he has control over. We aren't going to get anywhere without his help, so best to just have the sword in Shikai (which is around the same size as the unreleased sword I believe) and work on learning the ins and outs of our Shikai.

I've seen several people saying this in-thread but I got to ask; do we clearly and explicitly know this, that Shikai mastery is actually beneficial to Bankai training? I see the obvious path for making the assumption, but I was under the impression it was just that, an assumption rather than fact - that there was no point in the manga where they laid it down all bare and confirmed this rather than left it implied (like oodles of other things they left implied that Kubo later did fun twist stuff with or what have you) - and there are enough things in life that are so wildly different to handle in a red-line sense like Bankai to Shikai's less extreme output, that I don't feel it's fair to treat that as fact.

We are likely to need to fight Zangetsu for Bankai and it is better to do that knowing our Shikai as best as we can.

To achieve Bankai, one must be able to materialize and subjugate their Zanpakutō spirit. Materialization means the opposite of getting dragged into the Zanpakutō's inner world: the wielder needs to summon the Zanpakutō's spirit into the physical world. Got this from the wiki.

So, in order to get Bankai we have to fight him, likely with the Shikai form. In order to beat him we need to be able to wield Shikai as best we can, that means mastering it as much as possible.

So, even without Bankai we should be working on mastering our Shikai. In order to fight Zangetsu on evener ground we need to git gud at fighting with our Shikai.

Next time, on Bleach: Abridged. Ichigo continues the slow journey toward being as old as he was when the series started.

...wait, Ichigo is asking him for Bankai advice?

Good idea.

Re-echoing ideas already said, but we need to know how our Shikai works to win Bankai, and Komamura has a top tier relationship with his zanpakuto.

I'd rather square off personal issues before meeting Komamura.
