Black Panther 2

She's a hardcore anti-vaxxer (along with a smattering of climate change denial, transphobia, and some general "China did COVID" JAQ'ing off), to the point of getting dropped by her original PR team because (allegedly) she wouldn't shut up about it on set.

You can read about it here, it's a bag fumble up there with Gina Carano's.

Wow didn't even know about the other stuff.

Also recall she refused to be vaccinated and due to living in the UK, she couldn't get on a plane to return to the set in the US thus massively disrupting the shoot and delaying it by several months because they already shot everything they could without her and she's the main character.

Thus making me believe the bit about them setting up a replacement to her, as both a back-up and a warning.

Well then I certainly hope they don't decide to go with her as the main character…

Yeah the Mouse doesn't give a shit what you believe as long as you don't affect the bottom line (case in point: them being extremely cool with Chris Pratt's soft-MAGA rebrand). The straightest, shortest walk for a Boseman-less BP sequel is "Shuri becomes Black Panther", and the fact that they're not doing that speaks volumes.

Like I said, truly cursed film. First your lead dies suddenly, then the obvious replacement candidate publicly sets their reputation on fire, but you can't just ditch them because they're basically the only lead you have left.

Just have Michael B. Jordan show up playing T'Challa and people mention that he looks a lot like his twin brother, Erik Killmonger, in very suspicious tones

Yeah, like I said in a pre-COVID world "Shuri becomes Black Panther" seems like a slam dunk (she's done it plenty of times in the comics and Wright's portrayal was highlight of the original), but yeah it's the kind've thing were you want to jump in the DeLorean and say "Hey Ryan, I dunno maybe Shuri froze Erik's corpse and then revives him because some comic book shit is happening? Just a suggestion."

*EDIT* I should say that, to compound the shit situation, (allegedly) Kaluuya is also a hardcore anti-vaxxer, just a lot quieter about it. For example, the Academy this year dropped the requirement that all presenters be vaccinated, with the rumor being that Kaluuya was the reason - he had won Best Actor the year prior for Judas and the Black Messiah, and traditionally the previous years winner presents their opposite number (Best Actor for Actress, Best Actress for Actor, etc.).

And this is all on top of Ant-Man star Evangeline Lily pretty publicly and repeatedly showing her ass during COVID, gotta imagine Marvels PR dept. is working triple time right now.

No no, just make it some Metal Gear Solid shit

Open with T'Challa getting maimed by a bomb and say that because of his use of the heart shaped herb and his genetic situation the only way they could heal him was by using extensive skin and bone transplants from Erik Killmonger's body

Thus, Michael B Jordan is now T'Challa

The fact that this is ethically some sort of completely fucked up will go completely unsaid

"Wait, Killmonger? I thought you were dead, how did you survive?"
"It wasn't easy!"

Michael B. Jordan taking over as T'Challa would be cool.

Though honestly, if they decide not to recast T'Challa, I'd be fine with them just taking advantage of the multiverse and going 'Hey, I'm Killmonger's good twin from an alternate universe, and I'm here to help.'

Or let Nakia take over as Black Panther.

Much rather the sequel have Shuri as Black Panther, not the role of T'Challa being recast.

Or they don't recast. Can't have too many recasts in the MCU.
Did you miss the whole conversation about the actress and why she's a risk to the movie's success? It's why everyone is speculating.
Chris Pratt's soft-MAGA rebrand
I'm still confused on the facts on this one. Part of it feels like a controversy/outrage based on circumstantial evidence and part of it feels like an extension of making fun of Hollywood for taking "Worst Chris" seriously. Not that there is nothing substantial, mind you, as seen by his attending an homophobic church that is associated with an even worst one, not participating in a Democratic fundraising event with other MCU actors and saying some centrist stuff about "not feeling represented by either sides", and that disgusting comment he made about having a "healthy baby" with his second wife when he had a kid with severe health issues with his first wife.

But it always striked me more as typical assholish celebrity behavior with a pinch of centrist bullshit rather than outright MAGA chud à la Gina Carano or Roseanne Barr.

Call me crazy, but I'd rather not have one of the MCU headliners (playing a character who is supposed to be a scientific genius at that) played by an antivaxxer.

I think Bob Chapek would rather deal with the antivaxxer than the potential outcry over Disney replacing a young black actress for 'not playing by the rules' or whatever she'd call it upon being fired.

Mm. I don't think anyone except perhaps a fringe of stupid fans will protest that. Wright's reputation went down the drain sometime ago.

I think it might be the fact that his brother is an open 3% er and he's been wearing things that are damn close to 3%er stuff

Yeah, did it really? Because the actress is still very prominently featured on the Disney+ Marvel screen, which they wouldn't do if they believed she had no more fans, or weren't afraid of the potential fallout if they dropped her.

Guess we'll find out soon if they drop a BP2 trailer at Comic Con.

On the one hand Chris Pratt's pivot feels like it's partially being driven by a (not unreasonable) desire to shake the Andy Dwyer/"Human Golden Retriever" reputation he had early in his career, which like, I get - as an actor you don't want to get pigeonholed and want to demonstrate your range. It's just that he's almost exclusively pivoted to playing Hard Men Who Are Hard in interchangeable tacticool Clancy-rip offs which are clearly outside of his wheelhouse.

If I'm being honest I think it's equal parts him wanting to chase the action hero high and him being a dummy who's vaguely conservative (in that kind of midwestern Christian way), and if I'm being really honest I think he's trying to set himself up for a career in politics. Like, the dude married Schwarzenegger's daughter and has started making the same kind of big tent action schlock that built Arnold's career, doesn't seem like a stretch to think he's copying his father-in-law's playbook.

And all of them on Amazon Prime. :V

The "trying to avoid being typecast" makes sense, seeing his roles following GotG, but none of them have been as memorable or entertaining so far. He should have done like Ryan Reynolds, who is on a similar path but his roles are still comedic so you can have fun even if the action movie is paint-by-numbers.

Also, speaking of politics, Pratt is apparently related to the Kennedys now thanks to his marriage to Schwarzenegger's daughter? Some wild dynastic shit.

Yeah, there's also an element I think of Pratt just misjudging his own screen presence. His work in GotG was building off of what he'd done before, playing characters who thought they were cool, but were actually losers playacting at being cool, but that contrast made them cool anyway. GotG catapulted him into the stratosphere with everyone calling him the second coming of Indiana Jones (including semi-seriously considering him for the part until Ford told him to fuck off).

Given that he went from "schlubby comedy relief on a network sitcom" to People Magazine's Sexiest Man Alive seemingly overnight, I don't think it's that wild to believe he just started believing his own press clippings

"And my entire family is gone"

Well that's one way to deal with an actor who the narrative says should be the star but safety guidelines make dangerous to have on set too much
