So its the syncing problem that the shields and gun have with each other is the problem. I say add a little computer or something that can correct any problems during the sync. So it most likely is and hardware issue. We could just boost more power instead.

ok lets get this written out as a vote. One thing to keep in mind, if Judge is on the field shits gone wrong, and she is starting down overwhelming enemy presence.

[x] deplorable shield drone, by which I mean a slab of armor with hover systems. Plant it down when she opens fire and she now has a lot of armor between herself and incoming fire. Ideally incorporate an ability to replace the shield once one is worn away.

[x] re-work plasma weapons fire cycle for a long charge time followed by a burst of sufficient intensity to suppress enemy fire. Would likely need to be combined with some other mitigation method. Even if suppression is not possible, less frequent but impactful barrrages makes any other fix more effective.

[x] smoke grenades and some form of sensor upgrade to allow Judge to see through her own smoke. Either goggles or small disposable camera drones.

[x] develop a fast mortar carrier to deploy behind her to ensure she always has fire support. The shield allows visual light through, thus a laser target designator that works through it should be trivial, or even unneeded if she can eyeball it on her own. Sufficient mortar fire should force the enemy to keep there head down while Judge opens fire.

[x] Jet assisted mobility. In theory, she should be able to use her shield to protect herself from any crashes right? the ability to just ram motherfuckers is a way to attack safely, and the extreme mobility would allow her maneuver to firing positions that limit return fire.

[x] Demoloition charges. it's unclear if the shield is fully sealed or not, but if it is not, Judge could drop demo charges danger close, and then set them off as soon as their outside her shield. While short ranged it would be a way to attack without lowering her shields.


@Solark I just realized something, is Judges shield a 360 sphere or a single plane? Because I've been assuming it's a sphere of some kind, but if its a flat plane then there are more options.

If your looking for a lore fix here, just because the bit humans can see is a flat plane does not mean that's all there is to it, after all the glowing bits are where its being hit, so it could simply not be in the visible spectrum when not actively deflecting fire.

[x] Plasma mortars: adding an arc to her shots is useful in one of two ways. If her shield is a singular plane she can fire over her defenses without lowering them. if it is 360, then we can combine this with the below idea.

[x] Firing slits, instead of weakening the entire shield, refine it to only weaken a section of it, narrowing the target she can be hit from. If combined with Plasma mortars the firing window can be placed that incoming fire can not hit her through it.

Am I the only one that thought about fixing the power fluctuating on the shield when a gun is firing? I only see added stuff and yet no fix besides my possible votes?

I don't know if it matters or not, but I did the same thing. I made three separate posts, so these two aren't in the tally either.

Not an ideal solution by any measure, but sometimes the simple and straightforward options should be considered, too. (Though this might not be good enough at all, mind.)

Handling fiction-tech problems
I should have posted this before we took on Judge's request... well, at least now I can give you better examples. Let's talk about science fiction and outright BS tech and how to brainstorm such requests.

1. Like before, there are hints in the text.

Consider this:
As far as you can see, the field is in a perfect state when at 100%, but an intentional imperfection is introduced during firing sequences, weakening it just enough to allow the magnetic confinement of the plasma shots to pass through unhindered. It's not a bad solution, ancient aircrafts had machine guns firing through the props synced with its rotation to avoid hitting the blades. However, the imperfection can't be introduced instantly. It takes a couple of seconds for the field to decay, so shot-by-shot sync is not feasible. There is nothing you can do to change it.

So, per-shot sync works, but the decay mechanics can't be changed. This is our starting point.

Possible reasoning process 1: Ok, aircraft interrupter gear works because the blades are either in the way or not, i.e. binary states. Then, why don't we

Possible reasoning process 2: Imperfection is too slow, what else can we change? Why imperfection in the first place? We have the generator, so maybe we can just

Judge has dual heavy plasma throwers, sounds like something that melts a T-Doll with a single hit. But she gets damaged so much that she's forced to retreat, which means she's shooting for extended periods and there are still enemies that fire back. Why? Is something wrong with her weapons? Her aim? Is her field truly invincible when up?

3. Clever but simple tech-independent solutions.
You're doing excellent in this category, and came up with lots of good ones for this request, keep it up!

Too late to affect the outcome for this request, but still an interesting point. As I see it, it could work with one generator, since on-off transitions would be much faster if not instant. I'm surprised to see many advanced solutions while the most straight-forward one wasn't mentioned. I mean, it was supposed to be an obvious bad design that needed a fix rather than a workaround.

To keep 60% protection, which may be justified or required at some situations (think radiation, hazardous environments). But the main reason is... why didn't Destroyer have timed explosives? Why didn't Agent have gun cam-scopes? And so on. We have to fix something, and there are only so many problems I can come up with that don't assume initial questionable design choices.

Probably too late, but knowing this, I'd guess one solution is to have two generators: Time it so that one generator shuts off, plasma gets fired, then the second generator turns on, minimizing delay as much as possible for each step.
Fear not, I suggested exactly that. Via instability introduction, at least.

I didn't even consider shutting the generator off entirely. I thought ending an instability would be inherently faster than dropping/raising the shield entirely. Also, shields in-game take so long to establish (or restart after getting battered down) (like multiple seconds) that I just assumed that that operation was incompatible with the split-second timing of firing a bullet.

I'm surprised to see many advanced solutions while the most straight-forward one wasn't mentioned

I guess we just have some mismatch in our base assumptions.

There was another option I'd have accepted instead: imperfection to weaken the field to zero instead of to 60%, which would work similarly to LCD gray-to-gray vs black-to-white transitions (the latter can be an order of magnitude faster).

By the way, I never mentioned recovery time, it might be instant as is. The text says Judge is vulnerable when firing, and a couple of seconds before it.

Really! Huh. Today I learned.

(Edit: Oh, I get it. It's because you can just ramp that voltage, instead of waiting for the liquid crystals to settle at a slightly different potential. This supposition has not been verified)

Wish I'd given a vote for the armour. Oh well.
Don't worry, this was a brainstorming round. As long as somebody suggested armor, it counts, and we had several varieties of armor suggested.

Too late to affect the outcome for this request, but still an interesting point. As I see it, it could work with one generator, since on-off transitions would be much faster if not instant. I'm surprised to see many advanced solutions while the most straight-forward one wasn't mentioned. I mean, it was supposed to be an obvious bad design that needed a fix rather than a workaround.

I think the issue is it's a forcefield system, we don't know much about it. For example how fast does it cycle? can you put a forcefield inside another forcefield? can non plasma matter pass through it without issue? etc etc. Its the issue when dealing with technology somewhat removed from the real world.

Of course, you're right. That's why brainstorm ideas are free and not limited by anything. Not sure? Suggest it anyway! It's essentially a chance to define how it works rather than guess what's in my head. I'm looking for clever reasoning, comprehensive analysis and real-world parallels.
 
Yeah, it looks like Architect this time came up with plenty of solutions other than the obvious one. Which, fair enough.
