Along Came a Spider or How to be a Hero(Spider-Man/Worm)

In that poor bastard's defense, and considering the kind of crazy shit that goes down in marvel's New York on a daily basis, Spider-man having the ability to summon spiders, even if he's never shown it before, is too likely not to be true.

Hell for all you know he figured out how to do it the night before and you're the poor bastard he decided to test it on.

Makes you wonder how there are still people willing to do stupid shit like rob banks in that reality.

Yeah. I mean, going by the web serial she could have second triggered in the locker, or after. But it's never explicitly stated that she does. So if she has(Not decided on that) then it would have already happened.

....Okay then, definitely want to help, because letting her father and the medical professionals try alone didn't seem to help her in canon. We might as well take a shot at it and see if we can do something better.

Now. I'm going to go back to contemplating how a team up fight with Spidey and Mouse Protector would work out.

Oh hey, so there is a government hero Spidey can get along with!

Now, do you mean a team up fight by, back to back badasses, or do you mean misunderstandings ahoy let's watch heroes kick the crap out of each other?

Man Clockblocker is gonna wish he was our sidekick. And...honestly that'd work out pretty well, between webbing and timestop.

Again, kinda doubt it can get worse than it already was (without GM retracting she can handle this, it's just too much right now), and don't see how the medical professionals are going to actually help with a parahuman problem. Which this explicitly is.

It is a parahuman problem causing a medical problem. And we are not equipped nor trained to deal with either the cause or the effect.

Voting to interfere is just a plain "but I'm a PC, of course I should be involved" vote. Until something extraordinary starts happening we will be hindering more helping and TBH most extraordinary things would also not let us help much.

It seems like a panic attack or maybe even a seizure. They would probably give her drugs for that. And if we, as a brute, try to restrain someone having a seizure we could hurt them quite badly.

....You do realize that's not what it is, right?

OOC knowledge: The reason she's freaking out right now is that she went from being trapped in a locker to insensate and delirious, to unconscious, to waking up in a hospital room with the sensory feedback of all the bugs in a block sending her information on their location and their senses, though she can't quite process that yet. It's not harming her, and she can deal with it. She just doesn't know she can yet, and hasn't had any time to adjust to having this information overload going on.

Frankly, misdiagnosing her and giving her drugs (and I suspect the first response to this is going to be knock her out) makes her less able to deal with the input.

Also note, Halpo outright Taylor is capable of dealing with this in the above post. She just doesn't know it yet. And we, knowing she has powers, can help steer her in the direction of doing exactly that. Which is certainly more than the doctors will figure out shortly.

Her power might not be harming her but her stay in the locker still might have. A panic attack or seizure could result from things other than her power.

And TBH I dislike using OOC information like that. Peter Parker isn't stupid, letting professionals help someone is better than interfering when you don't know what you're doing.

Not really OOC. She's talking about, "Too much!" We know she's getting a power, putting these pieces together is pretty straightforward. In the vote, even.

Frankly she's already a fair bit more coherent than I'd expect for a panic attack, I could easily argue that now is the time to act so that we can try to help her before she has her canon psychotic break.

I see no reason we shouldn't be covering our bases, when we do in fact have information they lack. Which will probably cause them to misdiagnose her, because they won't know there are parahuman causes to her problem. In that regard, holding back on this information may do more harm than good.

And let's be perfectly honest, this is a Quest based on another work of fiction, OOC knowledge is pretty much built in.

You know, one point I want to emphasis and make abundantly clear. I made it before my last post but it was ignored, so I'm spelling it out:

Spidey knows Taylor was getting powers.

The doctors do not.

The doctors are pretty much guaranteed to misdiagnose Taylor's condition, because they do not know she is a parahuman with sensory input problems.

Spidey may not know all the details of Taylor's situation IC, but he's pretty much the only person present who can connect the dots.

Given secret identities, he can't really broadcast what he knows, so now would be his best chance to try to help Taylor from the powers angle. The doctors will be doing their best to handle medical soon enough anyway.

The doctors are as far as we know still more capable of handling things even if this is a power related issue. We have zero experience or training for handling this. We have no idea if what the doctors are doing would be the right thing or not. And interfering could out Taylor which wouldn't be a good thing. We should play the part here of a hero who wants to talk to her once she wakes up, not a hero with a personal investment in her. That could get her in trouble even if her power stays a secret.

We do not know this, and seeing as they aren't looking for the problem, it's pretty unlikely they'll find it. So false.

We have zero experience or training for handling this.

Because that's stopped superheroes since when?

We have no idea if what the doctors are doing would be the right thing or not.

They do not know.

Seriously, misdiagnosing is a problem in medicine as it is, stop acting like they have a chance of figuring it out when there's zero presented evidence to believe this is the case.

In fact? Cite me some evidence to prove your point.

And interfering could out Taylor which wouldn't be a good thing.

That would be why now, before the doctors are in, is the best chance. This is Spiderman, he of Chronic Samaritan Syndrome, and you're arguing he not do his best and just...do nothing.

We should play the part here of a hero who wants to talk to her once she wakes up, not a hero with a personal investment in her. That could get her in trouble even if her power stays a secret.

....I have no idea what you're trying to do here. We saved her from the locker, I don't think anyone will bat an eye at us taking a personal interest.

Immediate care is almost always about fighting symptoms not about the underlying condition. If she has a seizure because of her powers she probably still needs treatment for the seizure first.

Because that's stopped superheroes since when?

It stops smart superheroes. The ones that try to avoid making things worse for everyone by charging in without a clue.

They do not know.

I wasn't entirely sure what I could do to help her calm down

We don't know what to do, anything we do will simply be an educated guess. If the doctors suggest a treatment which is unsuitable we wouldn't know because we 1. don't know medicine and 2. don't know anything about powers around here.

That would be why now, before the doctors are in, is the best chance. This is Spiderman, he of Chronic Samaritan Syndrome, and you're arguing he not do his best and just...do nothing.

What I'm voting is that we stand by to respond if things start going wrong in a way the doctors aren't qualified to handle. That is actually helpful to both Taylor and the bystanders. Even someone with the best of intentions can make a situation worse if they don't know what they are doing, especially if they interfere with the people who do know what they are doing.

....I have no idea what you're trying to do here. We saved her from the locker, I don't think anyone will bat an eye at us taking a personal interest.

We want to seem professional. We have a professional interest in her as a hero since we want to find out who did this. We want to give of the impression that that is our interest here. If we seem emotionally invested she becomes leverage for future enemies.

[x] Powers or not I wasn't entirely sure what I could do to help her calm down, so I left that to her father and medical professionals.

She's not having a seizure. It's more like the effects of being subjected to a flashbang for her, except she's the only one who can see it.

Which means it LOOKS like a seizure, but is a normal reaction to sensory overload.

Waking Up
Both Danny and I ended up staring, though not even for a full second. I've superhuman reaction times and speed, and was by the panicking girl's bed in seconds. Danny beat me there.

"Hey, it's okay. It's okay, I'm here. You're safe."

Danny didn't quite seem to know what to do, opting to just take one of Taylor's hands in his as he spoke to her. I wasn't entirely sure either, but I had some ideas. I'd heard of people with enhanced senses having trouble filtering it all at first, and that's what this was looking like to me.

"Mr. Hebert. I've an idea as to what's happening. I think your daughter got powers, and isn't sure how to handle them yet. You just keep doing what you're doing. I'm going to try talking to her."

I leaned down and started to speak to the girl in an even tone.

"Taylor. I know it might be a bit difficult, but I need you to listen. You need to try and focus. It doesn't matter on what right now, just on something. The sound of your father's voice, maybe. Or if that's causing issues with your hearing then the feel of his hand on yours. Just something here, nearby."

Taylor did manage to calm down some as I spoke, though she was still flinching at things that we couldn't see and hear. But after a few minutes of the sound of her father's voice and, I like to think, my coaching her to focus on something specific in this room, she manged to calm down, lying still on the bed save for her head, turning this way and that with her eyes still closed. Her head turned toward the door, a puzzled expression crossing her features. And then all three of us in the room jumped as the door burst open, a doctor hurrying in.

"We... What's going on? We'd gotten some alert readings on the monitor so I was coming to check up on things."

I motioned for Danny to stay where he is, not that he was showing any signs of moving, and made my way toward the doctor. "She just woke up and freaked out a little, is all. Now, I know you'll want to poke and prod like a little grey alien going through probing withdrawals, but I think that it can wait just a bit while the father and daughter talk."

As I spoke I'd gently shuffled him toward, then out the door, shutting it behind him. While ignoring the snickering behind me at my choice of words. That done I turned around and faced the bed, sighing. "Much as I would love to let the two of you have family time they won't be put off for long. And then the police will want to come in and get Taylor's statement, and I need to talk to you before that."

I made my way over and stood beside the bed. "My name is Spider-Man. Hyphen between the Spider and Man. Very important that. And so many people forget it." I sighed and shook my head before growing serious again. "Anyway. Taylor. As I'm sure you've figured out by this point, you've gotten powers. I'm not going to ask what they are. That is yours to tell or not to tell. Though if you want help with them, I'll do what I can. Bit of an old hand at this. Though getting in touch for that could be tricky. I don't have a phone number yet. Or an address. Really new to the area."

I shook my head before looking back toward the two of them. "Doesn't matter. Just wanted to let you two know that this is something you'll have to figure out. What to tell the police, if you want to tell the... the Protectorate. That sort of thing. And it's really something you should figure out together. Trust me. Hiding things may make being a hero easier. But it's hell on your family and social life."

I made my way over toward a table in the room with a notepad and pen on it, pulling out the card I was given and writing the information on it down before tearing the paper off to hand to Danny.

"Since getting in touch with me may prove difficult, that is Miss Militia's information. She seemed to have a level head on her shoulders, so could probably help as well.

And with that, before they can even thank me I...

[X] Stuck around in case I was needed.

Best to stick around in case someone, namely from the school or such like, tries to slink their weaselly ass in here and pull some legal bullshit like trying to browbeat them into some kind of non-disclosure crap.

We're not a lawyer mind you, but our presence might throw them off their game and give the Herbert's an edge.

Besides we don't have anywhere to go, also Danny's been a local for a long time, he might know the best places an out of towner can set up shop safely as it were, or at the very least the rough area that each of the gangs call their territory.

Knowledge is power, and its best to know which parahumans we might run into during our times out of costume.

I was thinking just that, yeah, Danny could help us find a place to stay without having to rely on the Protectorate(and trying to find a place to stay with no money and no papers is a bit difficult unless we want to just mug a few criminals or live in a trash heap)
