Ok, so Retro-Streak Warheads; a short-lived specialty ammo type that didn't really pan out. Hostile Streak missile attacks on a unit mounting a Retro-Streak system are treated as a standard (non-Streak) missile attack with a -2 modifier to their Cluster Hits Table roll. Heavier and less effective than standard Anti-Missile Systems, which are effective against a wider variety of missile types and provide a -4 Cluster Hits modifier. I struggled to think of a practical use-case, until I realized it worked best as a supplementary system to AMS. Stack on RISC APDS on top of that, and you're sitting at a whopping -10 Cluster Hits modifier vs Streak missiles (2 for RS + 4 for AMS + 4 for APDS). If the APDS rules that Streak attacks have a base Cluster Roll of 11 still applies, then that drops the Cluter Hits roll below 2 and is an automatic miss.

I just needed a platform which had tonnage to spare to mount Retro-Streaks, AMS, and APDS, and could still use alternate ammo types. The latter requirement ruled out DropShips, WarShips, etc... but not Large Naval Support Vehicles or Mobile Structures, which can honestly use all the defensive technologies they can get.

So, I designed a smallish (Template B) ship to make use of this revelation. I... may have gone a little overboard.

Ok, so. Fun with the Illegal Quirk.

Strictly speaking, you can only mount Sub-Capital weapons on Large Craft, Mobile Structures, and Support Vehicles of the Tracked, Rail, or Naval motive type. But what if I tried to cram a SCL/1 onto a Satellite Support Vehicle anyway?

If I were to give it some fatal flaw as an entry in a new volume of XTRO: Boondoggles, XTRO: Caveat Emptor, or the like, I'd say that it was a serious contender as a low-cost replacement for the original BattleSat design, but field testing revealed that's its tiny support vehicle fusion engine struggled with the power demands of a (sub)capital-class weapon, giving it an underwhelming rate of fire.

Overview:
A close-support variant of the Challenger MBT, developed in the wake of the
Victoria War. Specifically designed for extirpating Capellan forces from urban
terrain, it languished until slow rebuilding of the AFFS began in the 3120s;
and subsequently has become much more common.


Capabilities:
Retrofitting the armament, the only thing that remains intact is the
antimissile system. The turret mounts a five-tube multi-missile launcher, fed
by two tons of ammunition, but that amounts to a sideshow to the main
armament; a paired close-support Long Tom and plasma rifle, fed by four and
three tons of munitions respectively. An array of seven Magshots covers all
angles to provide close-in defence, fed by three tons of munitions. All the
expolsive components are covered by CASE, and the armour is a substantial
fifteen and a half tons of heavy ferrofibrous armour, laid out identically to
the Challenger Mk XV's armour scheme.


Deployment:
The vast majority of this variant serve in AFFS and allied mercenary
formations. The LCAF are known to have purchased a number, and as with other
Challenger variants, captured examples are highly prized in Liao and Kuritan
service.

Saw a unit in the old BattleTechnology Magazine that I wanted to recreate in the current construction rules: the Athena Fire Direction Center Carrier. I think we need more support units this that aren't necessarily very impressive on their own, but act as force multipliers when used with other units. I took the liberty of substituting the nebulous "Communications and Fire-Direction Equipment" with a Command Console in the Star League model, and with plain Communications Equipment in the Succession Wars downgrade model (and, retroactively, the original Reunification War model. since the Command Console didn't exist yet back then). Also, note the differences in Design Quirks.

Overview

The Athena class FDC (fire direction center) carrier is an old but efficient design. First built for the Star League Regular Army in 2557, it has served on almost every battlefield in the Inner Sphere. The Athena forms the brain of the most successful artillery units, and is considered a valuable war prize. Its continued existence is threatened, however, because of a lack of replacement parts for its powerful targeting computers.

Capabilities

The Athena used a tracked chassis and ICE engine combination. This gives it excellent cross-country performance as well as mechanical reliability. Cruising and flanking speeds are well within operational requirements. The StarSlab/5 armor provides protection from most counter-battery fires, while the twin Sperry Browning machine guns give the Athena at lease minimal defense against enemy infantry.

The heart of the Athena is its communications and computer package. This is a three ton unit made up of a StarCom 6 long range communicator, a HawkEye 235-B targeting computer, and a SternFeur 3201 fire direction computer. The three units are linked by a Plekhanov SureLock datalink system, which ties the three elements together into an efficient whole. Depending on which computer program is loaded, this system is capable of controlling the fires of artillery units from battery to regimental level. It also has the capability to communicate with other fire support assets, such as conventional aircraft and aerospace fighters, as well as ground combat forces. This makes the Athena an extremely cost-effective vehicle.

The Athena carries seven personnel in addition to the driver. There are two targeting technicians, two computer operators, and two radio operators. Each serves as twelve hour shift during normal twenty four hour operations. The seventh crewman is the vehicle commander, normally a senior sergeant. The interior is well-padded to enable the Athena to function on the move with a minimum of operator distraction.

The only weakness of the Athena is, ironically, its strength, the computer system. The current supply situation in the Inner Sphere makes it increasingly difficult to find repair parts, not to mention trained technical personnel. Less capable computers are used occasionally, but only as a last resort, as they seriously degrade the Athena's firepower coordination abilities.

A secondary function of the Athena is that of a backup command post. Designers ensured that the Athena's systems and software were compatible with those of a Mobile Headquarters. This compatibility facilitates rapid data transfer between the two vehicles. It also allows the Athena to assume some of the functions of the Mobile Headquarters in the event the latter vehicle is knocked out.

Battle History
The Athena has seen action in every major conflict since the Unification War. Its contribution is indirect in nature but its ability to coordinate artillery and other fires has proven pivotal in many major campaigns. Athenas are often seen in command of self-propelled Sniper batteries in order to take advantage of each other's mobility. Some well-equipped regiments have used Athenas to replaced wheeled command vans as backup command posts.

Notable Vehicles and Crews

Sergeant Roland Novack and "Battleaxe"
"Battleaxe" was the name of an Athena serving in the Regimental Artillery of the 15th Lyran Guards. Sergeant Novack, the vehicle's commander, named the vehicle in honor of his mother-in-law. "Battleaxe" and crew gained notoriety during the recent Second Battle of Loric when it coordinated a TOT (time on target) barrage that completely demolished a Marik 'Mech staging area. Twelve Marik 'Mechs were destroyed and another twenty were damaged. The Regimental Artillery received the Lyran Unit Citation of Merit for their actions.

Today, I try my hand at improving some of the Satellite designs from TRO: Vehicle Annex.

To start with, improving on the SEU-193D Starcomm Civilian Communications Satellite. I reduced the Tech Level from E to C as a cost-saving measure, and made up for the lost tonnage by replacing the heavy and expensive Solar array with a lighter and (slightly) cheaper Fission/Radioisotope Thermoelectric Generator engine. RTGs can operate for over a decade, and it's not as if Solar arrays don't degrade over time, so I see it as a viable alternative for a satellite with a long service life and minimal maintenance. I even had a few tons leftover to add a Light Sail for holding station indefinitely at non-standard orbits, although this addition drives the cost up slightly.

Second, my take on the Wobbies' Cassion Payload Satellite. I felt that Tech E was excessive for a glorified cargo pod, and Fusion was overkill, especially since the design didn't include any reaction mass for long-duration station-keeping in non-standard orbits. I reduced the Tech Level to C, swapped the Fusion engine out for a Fuel Cell, halved the number of mounted Searchlights, and the anti-meteorite armor from 4 tons to just 1. Ultimately, you only lose about 15 tons of payload, and the end result is a lot cheaper.

Next, the D40 and SneakSat. For the former, Solar is heavy and expensive and drives the cost up considerably. For the latter, Fusion has a mass floor of 250 kg. By switching to a Fuel Cell, I can reduce the Tech Level from F to D, and still shave the total mass down from 1.3 tons to 1.25. Because these sort of satellites are meant to be disposable, with a service life measured in days, the lack of armor or station-keeping fuel is not a significant issue (although it does limit deployment options to fixed "natural" orbits). At just under 15k C-Bills, this is as cheap as it gets.

A Succession Wars spite weapon.

During the First and Second Succession Wars, border planets traded hands frequently, and it was standard practice to destroy local infrastructure upon a planet's immanent capture to deny such resources to the enemy. While this form of "economic warfare" was often waged with weapons of mass destruction, a lesser-known and more insidious weapon employed at the time was the Kessler Orbital Denial Device.

Individually, a single Kessler ODD is not much of a threat; however, these unassuming satellites were cheap and designed to be deployed by the thousands to release their deadly payload of space mines all at once. The cloud of mines would inevitably collide with orbital infrastructure, and the resulting debris would in turn trigger a Kessler syndrome ablation cascade (hence the name). The mines would remain a navigational hazard to shipping unless methodically cleared, and the debris could frustrate efforts to rebuild civilian satellite infrastructure for months or even decades. There have even been reported cases of civilian DropShips and shuttles hitting dormant mines which had been missed in high orbit as late as the Fourth Succession War.

Notes:

Rules-as-written, any space mines placed within 10 hexes (180 kilometers) of the space/atmosphere interface immediately begin to de-orbit at a rate of 1 hex per turn. At 11+ hexes, however? The mines just stay up there. And Low Earth Orbit (LEO) is anywhere from 120 to 12,000 kilometers above the surface.

OTOH, the Orbital Obstacles rules in Strategic Operations state that satellites, fighters, and small craft never leave behind debris when destroyed (likely for ease of play). This is obviously categorically untrue, but we can square this as not leaving behind any debris large enough to be a threat to BAR 10 armor or modern anti-meteorite defenses. However, it could still potentially be a serious navigational hazard to lightly or unarmored civilian satellites, which often don't have the same level of protection as DropShips or Space Stations.

Made a spy balloon, similar to the Combine Gossamer, except smaller, lower-tech, and fully autonomous. Recon Camera isn't as good at revealing hidden units and doesn't provide the initiative bonus of the Hi-Res Imager, but is more useful for target spotting. Handheld Searchlight was mostly just to fill out the remaining 5 kilograms; if you're willing to use the Vehicle-Mounted Battle Armor Equipment rules from Ghosts of Obeedah, however, you could maybe swap that out for a shotgun- or laser-microphone.

One of the vanishingly rare edge cases where I consider Solar a (somewhat) viable engine option, since you basically need unlimited fuel range for loitering, and Fission and Fusion are too heavy for small support vehicles at Tech C. On the aforementioned 4,450 kg Gossamer, however, there was really no reason not to use Fusion, since it's Solar engine is 570 kg (well more than the minimum engine size of 250 kg for Fusion at Tech D and above) and the unit is already Tech E anyway.

Precipitated by their total lack of quality control, Quikscell Company's attempt to break into the civilian riding-lawnmower market goes horribly awry...

Overview:

Quickscell Company's most infamous (and morbidly hilarious) product failure.

Attempting to break into the lucrative civilian riding-lawnmower market, Quickscell developed their "LawnMaster" mower as a low-cost alternative to the competition. Marketed as the next generation in lawn-maintenance technology, it's dual-rotor blade design promised to make the lives of groundskeepers everywhere easier by mowing twice the grass in half the time. True to form, however, corners were cut during the design process, with many off-the-shelf components chosen for their cheapness over their actual suitability. The engine in particular, repurposed from another Quickscell product that was cancelled before it made it to market, was massively overpowered for a mere lawnmower. When the engine governors were removed (or, more frequently, failed to be installed at all), the nominally ground-bound mower had an alarming tendency to become rapidly airborne as its overclocked grass-cutting blades turned it into an impromptu rotary-wing aircraft.

After an alarming number of personal injury and wrongful death lawsuits, Quickscell issued the first and only product recall in its existence for the LawnMaster and pulled the remaining stock off the shelves. To their eternal shame, however, the simple design was easily copied by hobbyists and garage tinkerers, and unlicensed reproductions of the LawnMaster remain crowd-pleasing favorites in the underground redneck lawnmower-racing circuit to this day.

So, the Generic Expandable Services Vehicle. I like the idea of it, but I realized that it doesn't actually get much benefit from being an OmniVehicle. It's already a Tractor/Trailer setup, which is a lot like a poor man's omni already. Need a different configuration? Just use a different trailer; you'd need a small mountain of omni equipment modules on hand if you wanted to reconfigure the GESV on demand anyway. All being omni really does is drive up the cost and minimum tech level for dubious benefit. Also, I'm of the opinion that the Tractor vehicle is better off as a pure Tractor with the biggest engine possible, with the specialized configurations spun off into their own separate Trailer vehicles.

So, I redesigned the GESV as non-omni, lower-tech version. A bit bigger, but overall cheaper. If you like, think of it as what the AFFS might've been using before the omni models we're familiar with were introduced in 3066.

Overview
One of several revised versions of the Hanse MBT created as the Federated Suns rallies and regains
its footing, and fights back.

Capabilities
Intended to deal with a long-running complaint about the Hanse, this variant removes the light
machine gun turrets, replacing them with sponson mounts for the plasma rifles. Two of the LMGs are
retained, and moved to bow mountings. The armour is upgraded to heavy ferrofibrous composites.

Deployment
Currently, this variant is exlusive to the AFFS and a handful of trusted mercenary commands,
notably the Illician Lancers and Tweflth Vegan Rangers.

History
Primarily deployed on the Kuritan front, many AFFS commanders have taken to partnering this variant
up with standard Hanses, deliberately using the latter as bait to draw Kuritan battle armour into
firetraps. The same tactics have been repeated on the Capellan front, to devastating effect - albeit
aided by the CCAF's thorough contempt for the Hanse. Particularly, as the Sixth Syrtis Fusiliers
pushed into Chesterton City, a battalion of Daffyd's Foot Grenadiers attempted to ambush a
demi-company of Hanses from the Fourteenth Syrtis Grenadiers, without  realising - or caring - that
they all were of the newest model. The result was a massacre; dropping into a savage plasma
crossfire, every one of the Capellan battlesuit troops was immolated in short order. Only one of the
Hanses was even damaged, and its broken tracks were fixed within the hour.

More fun with remote-drones...

The original TRO:3025 introduced the Boomerang Spotter Plane as a conventional fighter, but later publications such as TRO:3039 retconned it to a 4/6 fixed-wing support vehicle because a prop-driven plane with a 9/14 thrust rating was absurd. I now reverse this to introduce a remote-controlled drone conventional fighter variant. If you like, think of it as the designers replacing the turboprop with a real turbine jet engine since the design no longer needs to accommodate a human pilot. I also added a flotation hull chassis modification, because why the hell not? The final product ends up almost twice as expensive as the fixed-wing support vehicle model (although it's still pretty cheap), but in the exchange it ends up slightly faster, slightly longer-ranged, gets a free external stores hardpoint, and (most importantly) you don't have to risk the life of a valuable trained pilot in an unarmored deathtrap to get the full use out of one.

In a similar vein, a remote-controlled variant of the Boeing Jump Bomber. This did require some sacrifices, unfortunately, with thrust reduced from 9/14 to 8/12, and losing a half-ton of it's already paper-thin armor. Still, the armor is mostly just there to begin with to deal with weather, small arms fire, and the occasional migratory bird (which is more than the armorless Boomerang can claim), and any Jump Bomber that encounters hostile anti-air fire is not expected to return anyway. This just lets the hapless dirtball militia pilots assigned to the things survive to learn from their mistakes when they sally forth to use them as bomb trucks. Oh, and I also added a flotation hull chassis mod, because why the hell not?

More remote-drone conventional fighters. The more I think about it, the more I realize that they are an ideal use-case for the technology, given their inherent fragility and expendability. Still as vulnerable to ECM jamming as ever, but given the difficulties of intentionally doing so in a high-speed, high-altitude atmospheric environment, I'm confident that they could at least fire their payload off before plummeting to their doom.

First, the Light Strike Fighter. Personally, I consider using an expensive fusion engine in a conventional fighter to be an exercise in missing the point, so I avoided the classic Angel and it's Comet and Owl clones for the Combine Suzume, which actually uses an ICE turbine. I replaced the LRM-5 and ammo with 4 RL-10s (nothing this fragile has any business loitering around for a second pass), and lost a half-ton of armor to fit the Drone OS (given armor limitations on a conventional fighter this size, this amounted to just one point off of each wing, so no big loss).

For something more modern, the Katya. Unfortunately, there was no reasonable way to fit in the remote-drone equipment without reducing the thrust by a point. Fortunately, reducing the thrust profile to 6/9 and ditching the superfluous machine guns freed up enough tonnage to double the built-in rocket armament and add another half-ton of armor (6 points) that went straight onto the wings.
