Alchemical Solutions [Worm/Exalted] Thread 8: Haggard Host Hopefully Homestead Hazardous Haven

Well, this update continues to show why altering the rate at which Clarity is gained and shed is a bad idea.

Gromweld said:
You are satisfied by your unconscious mind's ability to keep your insectoid assistants out of harm's way during the hours of your inactivity. From the large congregation of spiders in the trees behind your tent, you may even have a subconscious habit of directing the arachnids towards spider silk production.

Spider silk undershirt production, that is.
Int + Survival success for insect husbandry?

Also just noticed the trees are now decorated with silk underwear. Between that and the Robot Nudist thing, Taylor is in for a lot of facepalm once she comes off Clarity high.
Turning your focus away from the half-formed, patchwork undershirt, your review of your plans for the day are cut short when you notice Armsmaster and Velocity making their way towards your tent
Pretty much automatic success on bug Perception + Awareness and Perception + Investigation to notice that they're coming our way, and why.
Sliding out of the gurney, black and blue lightning floods out of your soulgem and sets your nervous system visibly ablaze as your mind divides in six parts. After setting your spare consciousnesses towards reading through the various textbooks internalized in your Elsewhere storage (which themselves are downloaded into flash drives), you form a bug-clone outside the tent to meet the approaching Protectorate members.
Oh cool, we're doing the automatic reading up now.
Velocity stifles a yelp at the sudden formation of the clone in front of the duo, blurring slightly as he briefly dashes a few steps away from the mass of insects. Luckily, Armaster keeps his professional appearance as he strides to a halt a few feet away from the clone - save for the frown that gives his voice a darker tone.
Charisma + Presence - Clarity + Reputation + Swarm. Failed? Or did we intend to intimidate for some reason? Also I think Velocity has a Problem with bugs.
There are a few new emails from unknown parties that somehow made it through the PRT's spam filters, but quickly going through them reveals that their contents were wiped.
Huh. That's strange.
A quick visual analysis of the gurney leads you to believe that it will not support your armored form, so you quickly absorb the suit once again.
Clarity says this is efficient

You blink, look down at your form - or, as far down as your chest, at least - and then back up at the senior Protectorate members. You disagree with this assessment, but it is an order from a higher-ranking officer.
MDV failed?
"Current hypothesis: self primary target, Cradle secondary target, Iris target of opportunity."

"And you didn't consider telling us about it until we had an Endbringer tearing through the city looking for the damn thing? It was important enough for him to blow the city to hell for it!"
Not sure if the open discussion is a sign of high clarity, low temperance or both. Charisma + Presence + Reputation fail against Armsmaster's MDV
This briefly silences the fuming Protectorate leader, who starts briefly when Velocity puts a hand on his shoulder to halt his next statement. A unspoken exchange follows between the two, which you find difficult to follow due to Velocity's featureless mask and Armsmaster's visor. They finally share a nod, after which Velocity turns back to you while moving both hands up in a halting gesture. His voice is a bit softer now, though you detect a thin edge to his tone that wasn't there previously.
Something going on here we didn't catch on to. Failed Perception + Investigation?
To comply with his order, as you pass through the sonic field you absorb the dress-costume and then extrude one of your spidersilk bodysuits to avoid gathering dust on your skin.
Briefly naked again, fulfilling the letter of the order but not the spirit. I'd almost say willful misinterpretation, except she really IS taking enough penalties to misread all context. Clarity is weird.
Grabbing a full day's worth of meals - to reduce overall time wasted eating - you turn back to the two rows of tables and chairs, then stride over to where the Wards have grouped around the end of row furthest from the entrance.
Gluttony now? Missy would throw a fit.
As you approach, you note a that the young girl with Triumph is here with him as well. Though you are adjusting to the various stares you draw now, something about the look in her eye as she squints at you feels… familiar.
Perception + Investigation success to realize she's a parahuman.
"Parahuman. Hypothesis: triggered during Behemoth attack, new Ward. Recommend acquiring standard-issue costume, can tailor to adjust for smaller frame."
Still no Temperance to keep from running her mouth.
"Screwing up… all the numbers. Could have… No… Can't see… Hurts…"

"Declaration of 'numbers', power-induced headache. Hypothesis: Thinker pow-"

"Taylor, SHUT UP!"
Charisma + Socialize - Clarity botch. Major faux pas in 1) exposing Dinah as a parahuman in her civilian identity 2) clinical observation of the facts while she is in obvious pain. Not sure why Taylor didn't start up Loom Server Migration here, it's the efficient solution to a Thinker suffering incapacitation from Essence exposure.
While you were able to witness Triumph's sonic shouts in effect during the Behemoth attack, you are caught unprepared by this power-fueled emotional outburst. Fortunately, your angle of approach to the table causes Aegis and Weld to take the brunt of the blast, propelling empty wrappers, cups, and meal remains into their faces and chests.
Not quite sure how Triumph's attack works, but it looks like Dodge DV succeeds even against surprise, but it hits the tanks just fine.
There are shouts of surprise and alarm, as well as calls from everyone for Triumph to calm down, but you remain fixed with your meals still in-hand.
The food not even drop.
You refrain from speaking further, as you anticipate a poor reaction from Triumph in his current emotional state - once again a testament to the failings of human emotions.
Temperance finally?
"Unverified, uncostumed individual. Scans revealed active Corona Gemma. Statements, hypotheses: attempts to clarify situation."
So we just revealed our power to identify parahumans to an audience.
Probably another Charisma + Socialize - Clarity failure.
"Uncertain. Catastrophic emotional feedback loop detected during initial stages of Behemoth engagement. Emotional protocols overridden, providing Clarity of thought, deed."

Once again, a stillness falls over the group of teenaged heroes as they process your statement. Kid Win looks to be grasping for a response while Vista appears to be shrinking further into herself, though Clockblocker is the first to speak up again.
Uncertain outcome of social roll here. I think our intimacy with the wards let our Socialize attempt scrape through here.
"So… you went full robot?"
Clockblocker saves the day!
Vista takes a tentative step towards you, pushing past an awkwardly-shifting Clockblocker, and looks up to your face. You can not read her expression through the over-the-head visor that covers everything higher than her lips, but her voice sounds tired and forlorn.

"Are… are you going to get better?"
Them feels. Some failed Perception + Investigation follows for trying to understand emotional context here.
You crisply tear open each packet and stuff the packaged meal bars into your mouth. Each bar requires seven bites, four segmentations with your incisors, and three grinds with your molars before they are broken apart enough for you to swallow entirely and move on to the next bar.

You are satisfied that the rest of the Wards are observing your efficient methods of consumption. Vista herself appears at first astonished by your orderly movements, which quickly turns to a scowl as she likely considers how wasteful her own methods are. Perhaps you should dedicate some time to teach your teammates how to more optimally move through meal time? This would allow them to recoup precious minutes from each meal, which quickly adds up to hours within only the first week.
Completely misreading the disgust/envy reactions to her pigging out on the food. Missy wishes she could eat that much without getting out of shape.
Clockblocker makes a choking, muffled, laugh-like sound at Vista's screwed-up expression, to which she responds with a space-defying slap that curves around the backs of Gallant and Kid Win to land on his left shoulder. This elicits a few gradual chuckles from the rest of the table, which taper off just as you finish your fifth - and final - meal ration.
Dennis continues to save the day. Also nice rocket punch.
Though your head is turned to give Weld the impression of your focus, you note that Vista is anxiously fidgeting with her disposable paper cup beside you, occasionally casting you furtive glances. Before you can turn to ask her to explain her distress, Weld lifts his index finger from the hand that's rubbing his jawline.
Pretty much nobody in the team is taking the Endbringer revelation well. Possibly another failed roll or extending from previous poor socialize.
As your helmet slides to cover your head, you burn your gaze directly into Weld's metallic eyes.

"They will not win."
Presence + Charisma now, without the Clarity penalty I think, due to being intimidation. Success.

As the powered armor comes online, you give a perfunctory nod to the stunned expressions around the table and then stride out of the tent.
"Cameras immune to Stranger power."
"Discovery, realignment of Undersiders plan: current objective. High probability of immunity to Hijack/Regent power. Powered flight sufficient escape method from Hellhound creations. Swarm caught in darkness during Behemoth fight remained under control, will form swarm to alert reinforcements should Undersiders betray Truce. Undisguised presence drastic impediment to Tattletale power."
Int + Lore(parahumans) success.
"The only reason I'm not reporting this is because you're not technically breaking any rules or going against any orders, Taylor. Keep this channel open, at least. Please."
Charisma + Presence, success vs Dragon with Clarity actually helping.

Hunting the Undersiders takes far more time than you expected, eventually requiring you to double-back and search through tents you had already scoured before. Dragon reports that they don't appear to have moved within range of any of her cameras, but after nearly two hours into your search she alerts you of a partial success.
Tattletale's planning ability > Perception + Awareness to find them.
Just as before, you manage to collect several hundred flying insects on her outfit - mostly the back of her hoodie - before she notices and begins to freak out.

"Ahhh! What the fu- aw fuck they're in- aaahhh get 'em off get 'em off!"

"Stop."
Charisma + Presence + Swarms, no clarity penalty due to intimidation. Succeeds in securing cooperation.

High in the sky, you easily track the young girl as she moves through the refugee camp unimpeded by PRT patrols or 'Restricted Area' signs. You note that she specifically walks around camera-observed areas, and relay such across your open channel to Dragon. The world's greatest Tinker only 'mhmm's in response, so you suspect that she is distracted with other, more critical tasks.
Is Dragon actually being affected by Imp's stealth there? Incidentally with Optical Shroud we actually have a sneaking buddy now.
"Reviews? You mean you gotta get shit approved that let you play tag with Behemoth? See, that's why I'm thinkin' the Wards is just gonna cramp my style."

Half-truth.
The helment's bonus helps clue in to Aisha running a distraction. Perception + Investigation + hat.
"Reviews preventative checks against ignorance. You are not ignorant."
Manipulation + Presence - Clarity. Success.
"Nah, I'm plenty dumb."

Truth.
Self esteem issues there.
"I'm out here gettin' blacker by the minute, while you're hidin' behind that sweet set of armor. If we're gonna have a real talk here - gal-to-robogal - I gotta be able ta look you in the eye. How do I know you aren't makin' faces at me under that?"

"Derogatory facial expressions wasteful while armored."

Her laugh, light and genuine instead of the gleeful cackle you remember from earlier, surprises you briefly. It's cut off when she accidentally inhales a flake of ash and proceeds to cough it back up for nearly half a minute, during which you remain silent as she spits in disgust between coughs.
We need more funny people! They handle Clarity Talk well!
Putting a soot-ridden hand to her face absently, the young Stranger mutters something to herself that you do not catch, though as you lean forward slightly you are caught by surprise when her other hand hastily draws a pistol out from the leaves and ash to her side.
Probably muttering about bullshit hax.
"Truce breach mandates Birdcage, kill order."
Intimidation. Works well too.

"Undersiders unaware of attempt."

She doesn't look you in the eye, instead drawing up her legs in her arms and resting her head on her knees such that her mouth is covered by the soot-covered jeans. After a quiet few moments, she simply nods.
Perception + Investigation success
Makes sense here. They already got away clean and had no need or desire for Aisha running distraction. If she'd asked she'd have been forbidden to.
"Unacceptable. Panacea healing capabilities critical to Endbringer resistance."

Leaning back from her scrunched-up position, the young Stranger looks up at you with an incredulous and slightly offended sneer.

"Damn, robo-overlord, didn't know people weren't allowed to try to live their fuckin' lives."
Charisma + Presence - Clarity, failure.
"Ok, so… yeah, the EBs are fuckin' bad. I still say you should let 'em go for a while, let 'em sort things out so she doesn't flip the fuck out again like TT said she did during the fight. Apparently that'd be really bad, or something."
Intimidation succeeds in getting more info out of Aisha, and that Undersiders appear to be primarily motivated by Amy's mental health. Might be more agendas underlying that, but bullshitting Aisha about something like that is hard when you can't remember she's there to need to be bullshitted.
"Girl just needs to get away from it all for a while before she goes fuckin' Carrie on everyone. It's not like the good guys won't welcome her back with open arms when she gets her shit together."

You… suppose there is logic to that course of action, though it flies in the face of the expectation that the system should be able to provide aid for everyone that needs it.
Looks like parry MDV didn't work out. Persuaded somewhat.
"Previous statements treat Undersiders as separate group. Agreement to become Ward?"
By the Great Maker, Taylor, you're almost as bad as QB about singleminded recruitment attempts.
"I will not forget you."
Charisma Presence Clarity, Reputation, etc, etc. Success
When her gaze fixates on your chest and lower abdomen, her confused expression and sudden bout of laughter indicate that she has found a suitable distraction.

"Holy shit, robobarbie! What happened to your tic-tacs and family clam?!"
Well now, this is going to be a fine explanation.
She needs to become a comedy duo with Dennis ASAP.

...There are several elements in it that I'd want to point out are poorly played out - except then I remember the Exalted rules concerning appearance and suddenly the whole thing makes perfect sense and it's uproriously funny. I think that the ones who're having the most problem with this are the ones who don't know the exalted rules, or don't recall how social combat works in exalted (and recall that, for Taylor, her 'physics' and by extension her social interactions, are effectively dictated by those game rules).
No, I knew of Exalted's rules. I still don't think it's funny. That just sounds like "everybody else is just too unenlightened to get the humor and if only they were more knowledgeable they clearly would think the same things I do".
And Taylor - who had little to no social skills prior to exaltation - is completely oblivious of this fact, since she not only exalted with this improved appearance, but has gained her extra social skills at such incredible speed as to have no real reference points. So even if she were to try to analyze this change in the demeanour of others around her, she'd probably think it a result of her rapidly improving skills relative to her original abilities.
You know what else Taylor has gained really, really, really fast?

Appearance 5. It was, in fact, instant.

I think Taylor has noticed that she became much more beautiful -- one of her first actions was to go "Holy crap I am a beautiful deathmetal robot!" -- and if anything I think Taylor would be more unaware of her improving social skills. (Note: 'more unaware' by comparison. Not actually totally unaware.) She'd probably notice that she's better at talking to people and that things come easier to her. But it wouldn't be as quick, obvious, or blatant a change as her beauty upgrade was.

The social skills improve slowly -- over days and weeks.

The Appearance? Improved instantly.

I'm pretty sure that "getting 2 dots INSTANTLY" is far more noticeable and obvious than "get more dots over days and weeks".
TL;DR - So, while explaining the joke might ruin it, that's basically the cornerstone of WHY Taylor occasionally showing up naked and stunning literally everyone with her beauty into senselessness is hilarious to those who've played exalted, and why it keeps coming up (I think). Basically, it's YET ANOTHER superpower (relatively) that no one has even noticed yet. But it will come out eventually. And the reveal will almost certainly be hilarious.
Or maybe it's just not funny to people?

And all this doesn't address the fact that Appearance bonuses apply if you simply dress right. Or if people can see how beautiful you are.

*Shrugs* well I never played Exalted and I thought it was funny.
Yeah, it's possible to find it funny either way. Or in a combination of ways. -- Or the opposite, to find it unfunny either way!

I was just saying that "Oh, I get it! You're just ignorant -- if you knew the rules behind this, you'd laugh too!" was a poor argument.

There are a number of capes that would see becoming a magical robot an upgrade, not a sacrifice/drawback. Canonnicly they tend to go bad (Chuckles), get committed (Garrote), or even if rehabilitated, are still not all there (Laberynth).

There may be some case 53s that could be interested as well...
We've got five candidate slots, charity cases are not priority here.

Well they WOULD fit the scorned ostracized and bullied part, look at Gully she was apparently denied promotions because she was a case 53 plus she's freaking strong and has earth manipulations, Weld's power as a charm would be phenomenally useful for healing lost limbs with just nearby metals and if you're willing to stand the pain free Magical Materials, Sveta for powerful extra limbs and such.

We'll likely have used up most if not all of our slots by the time most of them re-enter the plot, so...

It's not so much that Lisa had more than 10-13 dice, it's more the fact that Taylor ran an efficient grid search of the area. So all Lisa had to ask herself was, 'how would a highly efficient person run a highly efficient grid search?' and then, she and the Undersiders could move around Taylor without being caught.
Like with the Judoon just hide on the building floor they already checked since they obviously confirmed no one was there.

landcollector said:
I am skeptical that Lisa's planning exceeds 10-13 dice, but whatever.
Really? I would expect a hyperintelligent extradimensional entity to roll very significantly more than what a peak human would.

I think you're really low balling shards here, if you expect them to be no better than the best possible human.

My personal metric would be that Lisa is as much better at induction than a normal person as Taylor is than a normal person at detecting and herding insects.

Neither uses conceptual effects in Worm, so think of the number of successes someone would have to roll on Charisma + Survival to do what Taylor does with insects, and apply those to induction. I'm personally going with 20+.

Not much of a Bullshit Magical Robot Girl, then, are we?

We're totally bullshit. On the other hand, so are shards. They just apply their bullshit in a different way. We can throw down Perfect effects via charms. They can throw down Culture mind+ levels of competence at tasks. Fortunately they're idiot savants. Unfortunately, our charms are special purpose as well.

It comes down to who applies their bullshit in the cleverest way. That's out challenge. We're not going to win just because we're Exalted. We're going against peer and above peer opponents here. When we put our B game against their A game, we're going to lose.

Like it was said before at our current Clarity we are very efficient and therefore very predictable so TT just managed to figure out our super efficient predictable pattern to evade us.

If that's the case this should have been a contested roll where Taylor is attempting to track the Undersiders vs the Undersiders attempts to evade Taylor's search.

What should have happened is Taylor's Perception + Survival (Swarms +1) pool of 9 vs the Undersider's Wits + Survival (assuming they're moving as a group). Lisa could have provided circumstantial bonuses to that roll because, as you say, she's smart enough to ask the right questions.

On the other hand, Taylor could always just, y'know...buy successes thanks to her 2nd Perception Augmentation. The fact that Taylor has incredible field awareness thanks to her swarm sense ought to provide a rather hefty bonus as well. And lets not forget Taylor's other significant advantages - she can fly, can see with perfect clarity up to a mile away, can see through walls, and can tell if a person is a parahuman.

The deck was stacked in Taylor's favor, and all the griping about railroading is well deserved.

Railroading is a bit strong but the entire aftermath of the fight HAS been kind of disappointing.

TT convincing Amy to abandon her family and hook up with a girl who is pretty much the exact opposite of GG in less then 24 hours following her death is stretching SOD pretty hard.

Then despite Grom having described TT as feeling guilty during the fight she skips out before even giving us a chance to talk?
To be fair, the Dallon family was a poisonous environment for Amy to be in. TT does have a great deal of explanation to do though, and we WILL get it.
