Alchemical Solutions [Worm/Exalted] Thread 6: Fatal Fires Flagrantly Fry Frantic Friends, Family

Good grief. I go to bed, there's a story post, and seven hours later there's been eight pages of conversation. Through what is essentially the middle of the night.

I can't really keep up with thread chatter of this level; I guess I'll be sitting out primary voting again.
There's no stunts, so you can just vote for the option you want.

Most of this has been people going "so depressing" and Grom going "it's not that bad!" then everyone else quoting Grom when more people come in and go "so depressing" without reading through the aforementioned eight pages. There's actually been very little discussion on the vote, which is just to pick one of three options without stunts.

The problem with Specialties is that they are trained a lot faster, so SB sees a shiny they can get now and forget about the much better shiny they could get later.

I definitely want to get that Presence dot ASAP, and Occult (Autochton) sounds like a worthwhile investment... but other than that, methinks we should be saving some XP for Backgrounds. There's bound to be a bunch coming after this arc.

Hypothetical situation: seeing as how we're nearly on death's door, say we want to get four additional General Charms slots, and fill them with 3 instances of Strain-Resistant Chassis Modification and Essence Shield Projector for enhanced future survivability:

General Charm Module Slots are 6 XP each, 6 XP * 4 = 24 XP right there.
Each new Charm is also 6 XP, so there's another 24 XP.

Total: 48 XP, just for that.

Now, let's talk time sunk. each new General Charm Slot takes a day to install, so there's 4 days down.
Each instance of SRCM takes (Min Atrribute {Stamina 2} + Min Essence {Essence 2}) days, or 4 days. 3*4 = 12 more days
ESP takes (Min Attribute {Stamina 4} + Min. Essence {Essecne 3}) days, or 7 days

So, Reiterated totals: 48 XP and 23 days if we wanted to do everything in one go. It might be better to do this hypothetical upgrade piecemeal and over a period of time...

Edit: Disregard this, as FunkyEntropy has informed that I was committing a newbie error.

I think the final count isn't bad compared to what happens in canon?

Thing is, upgrading attributes is a month, so that hypothetical upgrade could go hand in hand with upgrading either one or multiple attributes if Gromweld lets us train many at the same time like he is letting us do with abilities.

If we can upgrade multiple attributes at once, we're probably going to want another 28 XP (Dexterity and Intelligence at 6 XP, Strength and Charisma at 8 XP).

If we're doing slots for specific Charms, we can buy Dedicated slots for a lot of Charms, including the ones you listed above. They cost 2xp less (although they take the same time to install), and if we ever need to upgrade to a General Slot for some reason it's only 2xp + 1hr.

I strongly recommend that people drop their specialty votes and stick with just Presence. The 2-6 XP saved by doing so is a good investment on a Charm Slot or Attribute upgrade in the future.

This is probably REALLY rude to do this, but guys we're going to need something around 48-100+ XP for when we get access to a vat, just stick with purchasing Prescence for now.

Considering how shit we are at Socialize, why shouldn't we take Socialize (Swarms) right now? We're probably going to be continuing to talk to people through our swarms now we've made it known we can, and we're only at one dot Socialize at the moment.

No specialties this time please. We have more than enough on our plate without using up every last drop on misc stuff that sounds cool for the moment.

Yes and in Authocthonian terms Collective means PLANET, so losing one city to save the only people who can even remotely inconvenience the Endbringers is far more efficient expescially with high clarity.

we have high clarity right now it's probably not worth it at the moment.

Why do so many people want to save the capes? As we have just seen, most parahumans are about as useful against the real threats as an umbrella in a hurricane and their survival shouldn't take priority. At the end of the day, we are still a communist hero, and communism is not about an exalted few saving everyone but about people pulling together and uniting to solve their problems. The individual is expandable as long as the collective survives.

Given that we're in Alchemcial form right now (and we're mote tapped, so we can't even look like attractive 20-yr. old Taylor Hebert), we will terrify any unlucky survivors we come across (NOTE: it is possible to die through sheer terror as your heart stops). At least the capes can handle it.

Interlude - Endbringers
The image of Behemoth on his throne has brightened my day. :D

Anyway, my own little omake:

Miss Militia sighed in relief as the healers confirmed that Kid Win and Gallant would be fine. All in all... despite how badly it had started, this was probably the LEAST catastrophic Behemoth fight she had ever participated in. It was not lost on her than this miraculously low casualty rate was principally owed to the Wards' newest recruit. Surveying the scene, she found Weaver, still in her somewhat disconcerting robot form...

...Wait. Why was Weaver holding Armsmaster's nanothorn knife and quickly progressing toward Tattletale...?
To her credit, Miss Militia only froze for half a second when the junior Ward grabbed the blonde Undersider, slammed her against the wall, and held the tinkertech weapon right next to her head. The world around them seemed to stop as everyone gazed at the scene, tensing as they wondered if the Endbringer truce was being broken right there and then.

"The Endbringer truce prescribes that, when an Endbringer strikes, parahumans put any conflict among themselves on hold until the threat has been repelled." Weaver's tone was mechanical. Emotionless. "The continued existence of the truce is vital for the long-term survival of the human race. Without it, every Endbringer battle would result in unmitigated defeat."

The nanothorn knife moved slightly closer, disintegrating a few loose strands of the villainess's hair.

"The truce was broken today." There was still no trace of emotion in Weaver's voice. "For the sake of mankind's survival, this cannot be tolerated. As an accomplice, it would be advisable for you to-"

"COIL! IT WAS COIL!"

Miss Militia had never encountered Tattletale in person until that day, but she'd read her file. It described her as cool under pressure, with a penchant for engaging in mind games with her opposition. Right now, though, she was either panicking or doing a convincing job of pretending to. Maybe it was her recent ordeal with Noelle. Maybe it was exhaustion. Maybe it was the aura of terror emanating from Weaver. Maybe it was all of the above. Or maybe, Miss Militia considered with unease, maybe whatever Thinker power the villainess had was telling her that Weaver WAS about to disintegrate her head.

"IT WAS COIL ALL ALONG!" Tattletale screamed frantically. "He used to have this power that lets him experience two timelines at once, and keep the one he liked! But ever since you showed up, his power started working differently, and now he gets all those timelines precognitively, so he can try as many approaches to a problem as he likes before finding one that satisfies him! But you're invisible to his precognition, so he's decided you were the only thing standing between him and taking over the city! That's why he had a sniper shoot you on your unveiling! That's why he had us kidnap your dad so he could brainwash him! He kidnapped me last year from the street an has been forcing me to work for him on pain of death! He's also hired Circus, and the Travelers, and I think sometimes he gives jobs to Uber and Leet! He's DEFINITELY got some infiltrators in the PRT! He unleashed Noelle in the middle of the battle! I can pinpoint where his headquarters are! THAT'S ALL I KNOW I SWEAR!"

"Very well."

Miss Militia eased a little as Weaver let the Undersider go. She then watched as the Ward approached Legend and Alexandria:

"Coil not only broke the unwritten rules when he tried to murder me on my unveiling. He broke the Endbringer truce to advance his own agenda. He needs to be arrested, and no later than today. We are going to raid his base."

Would you hold to that "meh, capes are useless" mentality if the Capes we can save include Panacea? Or what about Flechette? Clockblocker? Tattletale? Armsmaster? Dragon? Dragon qualifies as a cape, you know. Even if she's not in danger here, it still is worth pointing out, given that you dismissed most parahumans here as being useless and worthless.

Don't underestimate how important a cape may be. And don't dismiss the possibility of a cape we save being able to make a difference.

And Alchemicals are Champions. They are the heroes of the state, of the people. They do the things others can't.

Also, one of the Autochthonian values is efficiencies. So saving somebody who can later save more people is good.

I notice that the ABB and Merchants are destroyed, but E88 is completely untouched, as is Coil's territory. We're going to be looking at a major gang war as E88 spreads it's wings, or ABB/Merchant survivors push into E88 and Coil territory.
Gang war is going to be a thing yeah, given how big an impact removing Kaiser and Lung from the picture in canon caused.

Here, it might be even worse. Lung seems to be alive and in good health, with a sizable fame increase from wrestling goddamned Behemoth man to man, but all of his holdings and many of his men are down. He's going to be claiming new grounds, with sizable recruitment.

Times like this makes you realize how much easier the social situation would be if we had Personality Override Spike.

We already have this, check the char sheet on Page 1. I also reiterate to everyone to remove their specialty XP Spending votes. We need to drastically start saving XP.

Ugh I definitely think Capes is the trap option this time but it seems we are falling for it. If it's after midnight choosing people might let us lose a point of Clarity too.
Dragon is the one saying it, not us. I doubt the choice will effect our clarity overly much. We're likely to wind up in a situation that will quickly regain any clarity we may or may not loose, because we will still have a high clarity, which lends itself to getting more clarity.
