Busy atm, will clarify things later today when I get a few minutes to myself, but most important part:

During a brainstorming session, Lord Grasp casually floated the idea of him going over to the shelters while she is at school and being a public bathhouse/spa. He had a number of reasons for this.
Saki vetoed the idea. She had a number of reasons for this.

Hookay, let's clear some stuff up:

First and foremost: Saki is fully aware (and, if you've been paying attention, you should be too) that Lord Grasp would not just sit there and "be a bathhouse" as an act of charity. Lord Grasp is COMPASSION 1. He'd be doing this for his own amusement, and thus would be an active participant in the cleaning, with everything that entails (and/or send her mental images). On top of that, he'd probably need a whole host of explanations of what is and what isn't appropriate behavior by the PRT if Saki wanted to avoid harassment lawsuits. (And then he'd probably try to push those limits for his own amusement.) That is what framed her initial "ew" thoughts, and a bit of why she was she also thought that prettier people might possibly be acceptable for that experience (more on that later).

- Lord Grasp was deliberately created back during the Primordial War to be a weapon-servant to Exalted. He is not a human being with our standard wants, needs, and impulses, he is effectively an uplifted camping tent covered in guns and sharp objects with a similarly-odd mental architecture. He IS fully sapient, however, and as we have seen he has no problem voicing his objections vocally and physically if he disagrees with something Saki does/says if he feels strongly enough. This was an errant proposition, more lascivious on his part than charitable, so he wasn't that invested in the idea. There's some space for a morality discussion about whether it's okay to create an artificial, non-human servant/slave race (because with AI rapidly approaching in real life, it's going to be a talk we'll need to have in our lifetime), but as he is now Lord Grasp is quite content with his lot in life and would object to being told his existence is morally reprehensible (likely with violence).

- Saki is a traumatized teenager. Her base personality was that of an introvert in a middle-class family originally from Japan; her tolerance for strangers for most of her life was very low, even in the best of situations. In stressful situations, we humans tend to fall back into more deep-seated behaviors and right now Saki has been constantly been hammered with the reality of Enemies Can Be Everywhere and I Am Vulnerable. As a result, while she is still motivated to help restore Philadelphia and protect/help its citizenry, she still isn't yet fully comfortable opening herself (or a part of herself, which Lord Grasp is) to be vulnerable to total strangers to this degree. Yes, consciously she's aware that Lord Grasp is probably more than capable of subduing or punishing anyone that would get rowdy in his pagoda-self. Irrational fears are irrational.

- Saki is a bit bougie, yes. Pretty people are generally more acceptable to her than non-pretty people. However, if Saki and Lord Grasp did get placed in one of the Relief Shelters that sort of mild prejudice would quickly fall away in the face of the dismal living conditions there - she's got a high enough Compassion that she'd see how things are there and start hustling everyone in herself. But in the abstract... well, she's not Compassion 4.

- This was all brought about by Saki and Lord Grasp's discussion of what to do while she's at school since he can't exactly ride around on her shoulder there. Ultimately, it was decided that his continued education of Ciara (and occasionally Accord) was a higher priority, especially with the current rainstorm making 'cleaning' not the biggest priority for the shelters at the moment. In addition, Saki would rather have Lord Grasp parked in her Safe Space while she's surrounded in a densely-populated school filled with transfer students - she was fine with sending Lord Grasp out on his own before, but that was when she either was surrounded by fellow Wards or ensconced within the PRT HQ.

Hopefully this helps clear things up a bit. Saki's got her own flaws, so I'm not saying she's perfectly in the right here - there are many things she and Lord Grasp could be doing with her time that'd be seen as more charitable by the populace - but my primary intent of this throw-away line was that Lord Grasp was being more pervy than charitable and Saki called him out on it. If people have suggestions for how I might tighten up the language of that line to make this clearer, please feel free to PM me with them.

Apart from all THAT, some other responses:

I can only hope we can actually get something useful out of the shards we vacuum up. It'd be so disappointing if we don't...

I forget, what ever happened to the Butcher? Because if it hasn't been taken care of yet, we now have the perfect tool for the job.
We'll certainly be getting something, don't worry.

The Butcher is... still around.
Given their sheer size though, I wonder what the limit on that is. If this is some kind of combination space between Saki's shard and the body of Auto, there is likely some kind of practical size limit they can handle. Shards are big enough physically that that might become an issue eventually.
Autochthon's world-body jotun is arbitrarily large dependent on his whims, and MUCH bigger on the inside than it is on the outside. Similarly, Saki's original Shard was designed for imprisoning hostile Shards, but... well, it was limited by physics (bullshit physics, yes, but still). Charms aren't limited in such a fashion, only by the Essence costs - she can hoover up any number of Shards, but her Charm has a finite supply of Essence. We'll see more on this later.

Does anyone have an epub? I wanted to read this but fanficfare can't download this without either a proper index with all the chapters, or all the chapters threadmarked in a single thread..

edit: Ok, you do have a story only thread threadmarked, it's not up to date but I can deal with having two files :D
I deliberately keep the Story-Only behind one full Chapter to drive more people to the discussion threads. When I finish with 10.6, I'll post Chapter 10.5 to the Story-Only threads, and so on and so forth. Which... well, since you're here, I guess that showed it's working?

tl;dr: Lord Grasp is Hedonism Bot if Hedonism Bot was a war vet pleasure palace with gun turrets and agency.

The fact none of us remembered Grasp is Compassion 1 is fucking shameful. It really, really indicates he was not being nice for the sake of being nice. Whoops.

To be fair, he acts considerably nicer to his Master, their Circle/Assembly, and their charges - enough that it wouldn't be hard to consider him almost Compassion 3 in those scenes - so we've generally seen him at his best and acting as a proper servant/weapon should. But when it's not someone he considers part of the Exalted in-group? He's not deliberately malicious, rather he's still in the Primordial War era-mindset of 'civilians' being barely more worthwhile than cattle that exist to support him and his.

To be fair to Lord Grasp (and dunk on the crowd he hung out with), he's hardly the only spirit that saw mortals as little better than things. That problem belonged to basically everyone with an Essence score higher than two.

(The really fucked up thing here is that according to reality they're correct; Extras count as scenery according to the rules of Creation.)

It's been mentioned elsewhere, but in the First Age and during the Primordial War regular people were something both sides could whip up a batch of using Wyld Shaping techniques for relatively little effort. The only things that were hard were getting any of them to awaken enough Essence to be usable in the battlefield.

For the First Age, humanity was a resource used almost exclusively for providing a Cult rating or for expanding your holdings by moving them too and from the Wyld to stabilize portions you would then bring back into your kingdom.

I personally figured his CONVICTION did that, since his master is Compassion 3 and badly in need of psychological care....he just ran it into "What Would Saki Do" emulation even if he could personally care zero shits.

Sighing, you raise your left hand in a needlessly dramatic flop and mentally command a cluster of hexagons to raise in the shape of a bench for the two of you, then fall back into it.

Ciara sits down beside you, neat and composed as always, but remains silent as you stare blankly into the empty horizon. Still, out of the corner of your eye, you can't help but notice she looks… more strained than usual.

"... What did you see?"
What is this about?
Did she have a vision like the Alchemicals had or did she see something else when she got her Soulgem?

One thing that just occurred to me is that Saki could just as easily have popped Valefor into her Safe Space for healing, and decanted him a day later.
We'll certainly be getting something, don't worry.

That's ominous.
What is this about?
Did she have a vision like the Alchemicals had or did she see something else when she got her Soulgem?
She just saw Saki manhandle and kidnap Mama Mather's Shard and imprison it. By grabbing it's Projection.
Which implies she could have done that to Ciara's Shard.
Which means she wasn't just tricked, but overmatched from the first time she touched Saki.

One thing that just occurred to me is that Saki could just as easily have popped Valefor into her Safe Space for healing, and decanted him a day later.
True, but:
"Ward member Tatsu beginning interrogation of Elijah Mathers, alias 'Valefor'," you begin clearly, following the script the PRT has given you. "Given the ongoing threat posed by victims still under the influence of Mr. Mathers' ability and the time-critical nature of this ongoing conflict within the city, Mr. Mathers is considered to still be an active combatant that is resisting lawful arrest. Proceeding with application of Interrogation Spur in the hope of obtaining details on remaining victims within the Greater Philadelphia area."
... the point is to get time-critical information. Her safe space takes longer than Prayer's healing charm.

Did Valefor get his stroke when Mama fried his mind or was it when Saki sucked up Mathers shard? Would that mean that he shared a collective stroke with the entire Fallen upper management or was it just him cause he acted like a conduit for Mathers shard?

First successful Interment of Nowhereverse Entity Shard. First successful application of Quarantine Protocols against Nowhereverse Entity Shard. First successful application of Personality Override Spike Redirection Protocols through Nowhereverse Entity Shard Dimensional Breach. WARNING: Internment through Personality Override Spike does not arrest Prisoner faculties until Redirection Protocols engage; significant collateral damage likely inflicted by Prisoner to origin Earth, connected, uninterned Nowhereverse Entity Shards, and connected, uninterned Nowhereverse Humans. Hands steepled against your mouth, elbows propped against your knees, you stare at the Prison Log in front of you - the letters glowing softly within the raised black jade hexagon that you're using instead of trying to deal with… all this… being jammed directly into your brain. Sitting on the raised hexagons beside you, Ciara patiently waits for you to tell her what you're reading.

You try reading it again, hoping that it'll make more sense with a fourth read-through. This time, however, there's a new entry at the bottom.

Prison Notes 005: Prison Recommendation: Intern Nowhereverse Entity THE WARRIOR.

You give an exasperated sigh.

… Well, it's certainly eager.

Warden Notes 001: If your Essence Reserves went down by at least 8% just grabbing this one Shard, can you actually grab a whole Entity? They're made up of lots of Shards, right?
Warden Notes 002: Also, is "THE WARRIOR" Scion's real name? Because I'm pretty sure Scion can kill me faster than I can grab him.
Prison Notes 006: Prison Reminder: General Feedback, Complaints, and Suggestions should be communicated through Prison Communications.
Warden Notes 003: You never answer those!
Prison Notes 007: Prison Reminder: Communications must be submitted using Form appropriate to topic category to ensure a response.
Warden Notes 004:
There is no 'Question' or 'Help' category in Communications!

No response.

You're getting the feeling that's by design. For some reason. Or… maybe Sakura has access to parts of the Menu that you don't? Your experimenting with the Menu has been more aggravating than useful, given how so much of it is locked down by 'Quarantine Protocols', which has given you the distinct impression that your Charm isn't really working properly when so much of it is locked away from itself.

Ugh. All this magic weirdness just goes right over your head. The rules to this stuff make sense until they don't, and then it's your fault for not understanding?

Ciara's hand on your shoulder makes you blink and look away from the aggravating Prisoner Log, though as usual the blonde's expression is fairly blank - only a slight downturn of her eyes lets you see her concern for how you've been grumbling at the seemingly-blank black pillar.

"Difficulty?"

You raise the fingers on your right hand to wave away her airy tone. "It really doesn't like explaining things," you admit with a sigh, frowning in thought. "I can kinda understand some of this because of all the information Cauldron gave us on what they know about the Entities, but… I guess I didn't really think about what it meant?"

She hums, turning her gaze back to the trio of raised hexagons standing one space to the right of the single pillar you're using for the Prison Log. Unlike the solitary pillar, this one has something in it that even she can see.

While you don't have a complete mental image of everyone and everything stored within your Safe Space at all times, you do at least have a general feeling of whatever's trapped there if you focus more than a second on the little motes of light in the back of your mind: who or what, how big they are, how healthy they are, etc. So you'd pretty quickly realized that your usual trick of showcasing someone you've trapped in your prison… isn't really gonna work for a giant hunk of fleshy-crystal the size of a continent.

There's a mental equivalent of a polite cough through your Familiar link, and you answer it by spinning up your Safe Space's portal to Lord Grasp's location- ah, you were going to have him go get Aisha afterwards, but it looks like he's already done it.

And now you're getting a feeling of smugness through your link. Of course. You still feel a little weird how well he can read your mind, but you suppose you're just going to have to get used to it.

"Saaaaaaki!" crows Aisha as she dives through the portal, effortlessly rolling a few times and then springing to her feet with her arms wide open.

"I'm so proud of you!" You smirk, raising an eyebrow at her infectious enthusiasm. "You finally screwed up!"

You stop smirking.

"That is yet to be seen," Prayer murmurs, striding through the portal with Accord and Lord Grasp in tow. Her massive, armored form rigidly closes the gap to Aisha's giddy frame, but she stops just behind the smaller girl, placing a hand Aisha's shoulder as her helmeted, expectant gaze rotates to meet your own.

If her mechanical movements didn't give it away, the sound of chimes in her voice would show just how much she's still relying on Clarity despite your protests.

But just as you're opening your mouth to explain that this whatever's going on is totally not your fault, Accord recovers from his usual disorientation with a blink and looks directly over your shoulder - his tight grip on his dripping cane-umbrella faltering in surprise as he notices what's shown within the trio of raised hexagons.

"Is that… a parasite… wearing a prison jumpsuit?"

Prisoner N-0000000000010 was pre-exaltation Aisha, N-0000000000011 and N-0000000000012 were presumably Dragon and Eidolon (not neccessarily in that order), and we know Riley, Colin, and Accord have all been interred between then and now. That's 17 prisoner ID numbers unaccounted for - who else got vacuumed up and tagged as prisoners?

Loved that prisoner summary on the shard, Saki's Shard-Charm best troll.

Also, who actually knows about Entities and Shards other than Cauldron and the Assembly? Does Aisha know yet? If not is gonna be a hell of an introduction.

I'm guessing those notes are also confirmation that this damaged the budded shards of our new prisoner too, which means at the very least a significant portion of the Simurgh Fallen (forgot family name) just keeled over in a coma at best.

Which even if brilliant cause it means the Fallen can probably be cleaned up is gonna demand some answers. Kinda hope the director gets written in.

Symbiote, shards are symbiotes... aggressive ones but still.

Eh... I technically do kinda agree with you more than not but only individually, as a race the Shards and Entities are definitely parasitic, considering their research always leads to the destruction of the host species, and even individually it's kinda up in the air considering the conflict drive mental effects tends to mean that hosts end up with a shorter average lifespan than non-hosts, ignoring the more extreme cases like Burnscar and Labyrinth, so calling them parasites verses symbiotes is pretty up in the air I would say.

Actually, considering the individual Shard vs collective race difference it could be the difference between calling someone an individual or a human. 'That's the individual Dave/That's the symbiote MONITOR-SCRY-DEFEND-SUBVERT' verses 'That's a human/That's a parasite'.

Also, in another respect they could be viewed more like a virus, in the way they consume their hosts then spread to infect more host species, when viewed at a more cosmic scale.

Honestly, we probably just need a new term for virus-like racially-parasitic symbiotes, not like anything like that exists on earth.

What I came up with was a continent sized, partially perforated by crystalline protrusions, orange sock.
Remember, the Transcendental Prison uses black and white striped jumpsuits, except the stripes are arrangements of hexagons:
Without the pile of tatters that served as her 'shroud', instead wrapped in a close-hugging jumpsuit covered in white and black hexagons arranged to look like old-fashioned US prison stripes, the pale blonde girl is… small.

@Fashion Degrees/Dressmakers, how much cloth is needed to make a jumpsuit? I'm trying to extrapolate the amount of cloth required for a collosal suit of that size.

Some quick searching has 3×10^24 kg as a little over half the mass of the planet Venus. And Venus has a diameter of about 40 times what that shard does. So, it'd take less fabric than it could have, but that fabric's containing material denser than your average star.

If a black hole wore pants, would it wear them like this or like this?

It probably depends on a) how damaged the bud in question is and b) how much influence Mama had over the host. I'm guessing it's MONITOR-SCRY-DEFEND-SUBVERT's panicked flailing that did physical damage to Valefor's brain, since it was in contact in order to influence him. If a host of one of MONITOR-SCRY-DEFEND-SUBVERT's buds wasn't under Mama's influence, I'm guessing the damage to their bud would likely just impair their power unless the damage was severe enough to make that budded shard lose control and flail about as well. Buds that hadn't gotten enough experience to move out to a planet of their own yet probably got the worst of it.

I assume it's space whale bullshit physics hax at work.
