Of Words Twice Spoken
Fourth Day of the Greensinging 1348 A. L. (After Landfall)
When Esha had proposed that she play interpreter for you and the Knikut you had been dubious at the prospect, after all you had gotten along well enough on the journey from Korman and Antonio had even managed to persuade them to play guards to the pregnant mares, but she does make a fair point also. Watcher in Darkness and his kin are pilgrims of a sort and you are proposing to change their path for your own proposes. you might not wholly grasp where Tender's pilgrimage is meant to end, but you will find out today one hopes...
"Do you seek blood or fire, child of the wastes?" The first words out of the shaman's mouth are harsh and sharp, like stone string stone.
Perhaps not the best idea after all...
"Fire that I might warm myself wise one," Esha replies without breaking her stride as she elegantly slides into a seat. Only the moment's tightness around the corners of her mouth gives away a flash of worry.
And I have been spending entirely too much time contemplating her face to have noticed that, the levity surprising even you. It has been a long time since you have been able to laugh at your own expense without bitterness.
"It is good," comes the reply, only a little muffled behind the owl mask. It occurs to you for the first time that Tender herself must be quite young to have gone 'in search of a spirit' and for the first time you wonder about the ways and paths of the Knikut. How do they take up trade and at what age do they start training at arms, who rules them in in what manner.
"We travel into the cold north, to the White Lands seeking trade and we and we... I would know if you have a desire to accompany us tither?"
For a long moment they take counsel with one another in their harsh swift tongue. "Do you not need us to help protect the horse-kin under the moon?"
Esha's hand finds yours and you feel again the strange
vertigo, as though you are falling into an well infinity deep and the water speaks to you:
"The reason they agreed to take care of the horses is that Tender feels the spirit of the Horse speaks to and she might choose to guide her on. Say you will take them with you as treasured friends and companions rather than leave them here where they are imperiled and the Stout Ones will agree to come with us I would judge, otherwise they shall choose to remain here. Whatever you do, do not dismiss the beasts' importance else they might take it as an insult..."
Your hand recoils as though you had just touched naked flame, unsure of what do feel, gratitude at the aid, affront at the implication that you might dismiss the well-being of horses in your care? In the end you push both feelings aside for now, along with the faint nausea of the spell and consider your options.
Between Zaia, Inge and Tender you do not doubt there would be enough skill at healing to handle a pregnant mare or even two. Yet the very reason why the mares had been as safe as they were was that you had promised the young king of Lirman a horse, to take both of them away now might be seen as an insult and any promise of return doubted. On the other hand the aid of the Knikut would never be so precious as it would be in the cold north, not just for their stout courage or the power of their spirits, but for their knowledge of those distant lands.
What do you do?
[] Take all the horses with you north (Will upset the king of the island; the Knikut will come with you and aid you on your journey)
[] Leave the mares in Apuku (Keep your promise to the king, the Knikut will linger also)
OOC: A rather short update, but a good showcase I think of why a mage with comprehend languages and mind link would be really useful in a negotiation.
