[X] Cha-ching!

And now I feel very-very guilty for Aina. We behaived harsh with her.
1) We refused raiding on Kormak. Yes, it was unpopular decision, Antonio would not like it, and I did not vote for it too.
2) We refused to help Ansefu with anjo-oru threat, when situation become even more dire.
3) And at last, we refused even to meet with Aina before we go north.

It looks... extremely grim.

We didn't deliberately snub her, though. When you're pressed for time, things like making social calls tend to fall to the wayside.

I wish we had more time so we could visit her, but there were too many other important things to squeeze into our schedule before we depart.

Add me on to team "We Snubbed Aina". Was unfortunately busy over the last day or so, but not meeting her because we wanted to get trinkets instead is kind of telling.

Next we see her she'll likely either be dead or some trophy wife.

Arc 6 Post 20: Of Words Twice Spoken
Of Words Twice Spoken

Fourth Day of the Greensinging 1348 A. L. (After Landfall)

When Esha had proposed that she play interpreter for you and the Knikut you had been dubious at the prospect, after all you had gotten along well enough on the journey from Korman and Antonio had even managed to persuade them to play guards to the pregnant mares, but she does make a fair point also. Watcher in Darkness and his kin are pilgrims of a sort and you are proposing to change their path for your own proposes. you might not wholly grasp where Tender's pilgrimage is meant to end, but you will find out today one hopes...

"Do you seek blood or fire, child of the wastes?" The first words out of the shaman's mouth are harsh and sharp, like stone string stone.

Perhaps not the best idea after all...

"Fire that I might warm myself wise one," Esha replies without breaking her stride as she elegantly slides into a seat. Only the moment's tightness around the corners of her mouth gives away a flash of worry. And I have been spending entirely too much time contemplating her face to have noticed that, the levity surprising even you. It has been a long time since you have been able to laugh at your own expense without bitterness.

"It is good," comes the reply, only a little muffled behind the owl mask. It occurs to you for the first time that Tender herself must be quite young to have gone 'in search of a spirit' and for the first time you wonder about the ways and paths of the Knikut. How do they take up trade and at what age do they start training at arms, who rules them in in what manner.

"We travel into the cold north, to the White Lands seeking trade and we and we... I would know if you have a desire to accompany us tither?"

For a long moment they take counsel with one another in their harsh swift tongue. "Do you not need us to help protect the horse-kin under the moon?"

Esha's hand finds yours and you feel again the strange vertigo, as though you are falling into an well infinity deep and the water speaks to you: "The reason they agreed to take care of the horses is that Tender feels the spirit of the Horse speaks to and she might choose to guide her on. Say you will take them with you as treasured friends and companions rather than leave them here where they are imperiled and the Stout Ones will agree to come with us I would judge, otherwise they shall choose to remain here. Whatever you do, do not dismiss the beasts' importance else they might take it as an insult..."

Your hand recoils as though you had just touched naked flame, unsure of what do feel, gratitude at the aid, affront at the implication that you might dismiss the well-being of horses in your care? In the end you push both feelings aside for now, along with the faint nausea of the spell and consider your options.

Between Zaia, Inge and Tender you do not doubt there would be enough skill at healing to handle a pregnant mare or even two. Yet the very reason why the mares had been as safe as they were was that you had promised the young king of Lirman a horse, to take both of them away now might be seen as an insult and any promise of return doubted. On the other hand the aid of the Knikut would never be so precious as it would be in the cold north, not just for their stout courage or the power of their spirits, but for their knowledge of those distant lands.

What do you do?

[] Take all the horses with you north (Will upset the king of the island; the Knikut will come with you and aid you on your journey)

[] Leave the mares in Apuku (Keep your promise to the king, the Knikut will linger also)

OOC: A rather short update, but a good showcase I think of why a mage with comprehend languages and mind link would be really useful in a negotiation.

All aboard the screw the Anwari train?

I intend to gift him the baby horse anyway, but here they are at a higher risk than at sea.

Well all other things being equal being at sea would be at higher risk... but they did just get shot with poison thorns. That is proof that they are not as safe as would be hoped in Apuku. In terms of safety to the horses Roland now sees the two options as equivalent.

Probably yes.
And even if not, Roland definitely does not deserve Aina after... this.
If it was other quest from other author, I would probably drop it after this.

Keep in mind you are not playing superman, you do not have to fix every injustice in the world in order to be a good person. Your power and influence has limits, something Roland is aware of from his life quite well. In this context not meeting with Aina could be seen as not harming her prospects by connecting her with the strange armed foreigners.

@DragonParadox , why does taking away the horses mean breaking a promise? I don't think we are unwilling to gift him a horse, it is just more convenient for us to move the mares.

You promised the king a foal from one of the mares, those mares have not given birth yet. Now of course you could substitute that with one of your mature horses if you wanted, though to keep to the latter of the deal you would have to let him choose the horse in question.

I quite enjoy the difference to ASWAH, to be honest.

Viserys had to save people, because he was very often the only person capable of doing so. Among the first and greatest mages in this new age of magic, after mankind has forgotten what it needed to protect itself from the things beyond, beneath and behind.

Here we are just another guy, pretty capable due to a good team of companions, but not exeptionally so. For example the hunters last arc were similarly capable (and of comparable level and equipment), so we don't have any need to keep that city safe.

Here the situation is similar. Ohun is a relativly powerful Druid, with more knowledge of the land and the people and more influence than we could get here in years. And he doesn't need us for pure PC-power either, since I doubt we could fight even the king's guard here, nevermind all men the island could mobilize.
The situation with the daemons will be won without us, or it will fail and we can still assume that a few more blades wouldn't have changed much about it.

Yeah. It is not like we won't pass through Apuku on our way back

This seems to be less an issue of "we're the only ones who can" and more an issue of "we're the only ones who will". Someone like Ohun (who I'm thinking more and more is some flavor of LE) doesn't have any reason to care about some disgraced princess, just as most anyone wouldn't have had a reason to care about finding Esha and protecting her from her father, etc etc. In a world where you aren't the most powerful person, choosing to help people regardless is far more telling of your character in my opinion.

I'm glad this is an option. I wasn't too enthusiastic about leaving the horses behind, our men, or the Knikut, not with war on the horizon and at least one attempt already made to harm them. This increases our manpower, available magic thanks to Tender, and could secure very knowledgeable guides for once we reach out destination.

Hopefully, the mares and foals will be all right at sea. We have a lot of healers onboard, as well as at least a couple experienced with horses.

-[] Leave word at the palace that we will return with his promised foal, as it appears the pregnant mares are not safe in Apuku, as evidenced by them being poisoned while we were at sea.
