The first day of training

The walk back to the hospital almost hurt, but not in a physical way. This was the same route you always used to go see Maylene. Everything was the same. Early in the morning, the air still cold from the night but starting to warm up. That smell of humidity at dawn… You reached the corner where you always met with Maylene when she had to go to training. She wasn't there, of course, probably already at the gym. The girl always woke up too early for your taste, but always waited for you to walk together there…
The busier part of the city didn't change either. Some shops changed, some closed and new opened… But the people were the same. Not literally, but the same kind of people. Some businessmen in suits crossing the street, almost bumping into the people going home after a night of party at the entertainment district. A police officer making sure traffic ran smoothly, something that only was a problem in a big city like this one. The smell of pastries from a café combined with the smell of cars. Most people in Sinnoh would find the pollution of the city disgusting, but for you it was nostalgic. It wasn't even that bad. It was just bad when your standard is the other towns where you almost never see a car in the streets.
From there, it took you almost no time to reach the hospital. Once inside, the smell of disinfectant and the white walls reminded you of the pain you felt in your leg. A phantom reminder of that pain returning for a moment. You would first go to see Violet and Lily. Even if you miss your pokemon you will grab them on the way out. And Lily was the most hurt, you were still a bit worried even if the doctors said she would be okay.
Violet had her own room, but instead you went directly to Lily's room, knowing she would be there. Psychic pokemon like her had actual rooms when they were too hurt for a normal heal in the machine. You were right. As soon as you opened the door, all eyes locked on you. A smile on your lips seeing that Lily was okay even if she wasn't smiling that much. At least Violet was.
"Haru, I thought you had training today." Violet said with a pleasant smile as Lily turned her head away from you. That was weird. She wasn't saying anything. You expected her to be embarrassed or sad for getting so hurt, but you expected her to say that.
"I have to get my pokemon first, and I wanted to see if Lily was conscious already. I was worried…" You said and waited for a second. Lily looked at you between blushing and trying to glare at you, but silent. Yeah that was weird. You turned to look at Violet who was trying to not laugh. "What's wrong with her? Did she lose so hard she can't use her powers anymore?" You said jokingly, regretting it immediately. What's if that's exactly what happened?
To your relief, Violet shook her head. "No, no… She is just under medication. It's a bit strong so the doctors told her to not use any external psychic power until tomorrow. That includes her comuni- Lily!" Violet said suddenly, making you turn around, only to see a something white impacting with your face. It was soft but thrown with enough strength to make you lose your balance for a second, your butt hitting the hard floor. That hurt. Violet crossed her arms and glared at the pokemon with a disapproving look. "Lily, stop playing around like that. You need to rest."
The psychic pokemon was standing on top of her bed after throwing her pillow at your face. She was smiling triumphantly after making you fall on your ass, but that didn't last long. A wince of pain in her face and she decided to sit down and rest. You then finally focus more on her body. She was covered in bandages. You decided to forgive that attack for now. Not the moment to start a pillow fight even if she shot first. You stood up and walked to her. She wasn't looking at you, trying to look to a wall as far from you as possible. You sighed and gave her the pillow back realizing something. Your earlier comment maybe hurt her a little. "Here… Don't throw this around. You need it to rest… And Lily…" You said, trying to grab her attention. She turned her head just enough to look at you with one of her big, red eyes. "Thank you. You saved us back there in the forest. Without you… Well, my leg would be the least of my problems." Your smile was genuine. She fought against a Houndoom to save all of you. A truly terrifying pokemon.
Lily stares at you for a long couple seconds and then turns around again. "Kir, KiKirlia ki…" She said. You can't understand her but you are sure of something. The word «idiot» was there somewhere.
You pat her head and walk away before she has time to bat your hand away. "I will come back later after my training. See you later, you two" You say waving your hand and closing the door behind you before Lily has time to throw you her pillow again.
Time to get your pokemon back.
It takes almost an hour to finish your pokemon check up. They spent all night at the pokemon center to make sure they were okay, but the nurse wanted to be totally sure. She said that the kind of training people do in gyms is a lot more intensive than normal, so they had to be in top condition. You used this chance to have the egg checked too. They told you the egg was in perfect condition. The egg of a normal type pokemon. It's healthy and will probably hatch in a week or two. They tried to scan it to tell you the species, but the machine malfunctioned after turning it on. They told you to come back tomorrow but… You took this as a sign.
You will wait until it hatches to know what pokemon is inside the egg.
Maelstrom and Fang seem really happy and their wounds are healed. Maelstrom needed some sort of treatment for his extreme fatigue but both weren't as hurt as Lily. You had permission from the doctors to train them as normal, but received a scolding from one of the nurses for putting your pokemon in too much danger. You know she had the best intentions in mind but it still hurt a little. It was not your fault, right?
The walk to the gym was pretty uneventful. Fang wanted to stay outside his pokeball to stretch his legs. A night at the center probably made him feel trapped. He looked at the people walking around with caution, not used to the busy streets of a city like Veilstone. So many people and pokemon all around you… He was clearly on edge, at least until you petted his head, reminding him that you were at his side. He calmed down enough to have a quiet walk after that.
Maelstrom on the other hand was inside his pokeball. He always had difficulties to follow you on foot but you expected him to want to walk with you. Maybe he was keeping his energy for training… You hope he is not depressed or something after that fight… And that transformation… You can't just ignore that. A lot happened in a day but at some point you should sit down and do some research. You are like… 90% sure Magikarp can't do THAT. And you spent six years studying. You heard a lot of things but that wasn't mega-evolution, it was impossible for a Magikarp.
While you were lost in thought, Fang was the first to realize something was casting a shadow over you two. Something big and sneaky, so sneaky it managed to get so close without even Fang realizing. The pokemon turned around surprised but it was too late, before he could say something the shadow was already too close to you. It grabbed you by your sides and lifted you, making escape impossible.
A boisterous laugh, almost deafening for being so close. Nalle. You arrived in front of the gym without paying attention, your legs carrying you on their own, this route was the one you always took.
"Haru, my boy! You are braver now! You came for training after all." You managed to turn your head enough to look at him. He was smiling, speaking with no trace of teasing or malice. He thought you were going to stay at home?
"Yeah, well… If I want to get stronger I have to train. There is no other way. I can't just do nothing and expect to be a good trainer." You said, regretting it as soon as he smiled. He shook you, probably pleased with your answer and not realizing he was still holding you like a doll.
"Good answer! Yes, you need to train! If you are so motivated to get stronger… I want to train you too! I need to ask Maylene to lend you to me sooner or later." He was still smiling but then stopped for a moment, looking down. Fang was biting his leg trying to «rescue» you. Nalle's face wasn't one of pain but confusion, then realization. He finally released you and looked at the Shinx apologetically. "Sorry little one. I didn't want to scare you."
You took a moment to let your brain settle down after being shaken by that giant of a man. Shinx was now in front of you, protecting his trainer but at the same time scared and confused because his bite did nothing. You sighed and petted his head again in the same motion you knew it calmed him down. "Don't worry Fang. He is Nelle, a friend. He is just… A bit too friendly sometimes." Fang looked at you confused and Nelle laughed at your comment about him. The pokemon looked back at Nelle's leg. He was wearing shorts, so nothing protected his leg. You saw a little mark of a bite with some burning around it. Almost imperceptible. That was what had Fang confused, but you weren't surprised. Someone who trades blows with a Blaziken as training has to be freakishly though. Sorry Fang but you need more training before he can feel your bites.
After wishing you luck with your training, Nalle went to some sort of office to do the boring part of his job as the second in command. You, on the other hand, went directly to Maylene's private room. You were surprised by what you found there.
That room was like the training room of a small dojo. Like a tiny gym inside a gym. Yesterday it was a pretty normal room, a big one but with almost nothing there. Space to train, a desk… But now it was full of stuff for training. Punching bags, weights, targets… And a meditating Lucario in the center next to Maylene, who was arranging a set of bright orange cones making some sort of obstacle course. As soon as you went inside, Lucario's eyes opened and Maylene turned to greet you.
"Haru! Great, now I don't have to drag you here… Look, everything is ready for training!" She said, opening her arms as you looked around. That was a lot of stuff. Everything was arranged in a way to have more than enough free space for training, but it was still a lot of stuff.
"Are we going to use everything here…?" You asked, not even sure of what half of the things there were.
"No, no. Don't worry. We are not going to use everything today but I have to be ready for everything. I even forgot what kind of pokemon you have… This room is big but if you have a Wailord or… Oh! Is that your pokemon?" She asked getting closer. Fang was next to you, looking around impressed. You told him about Maylene, the gym and training, so he wasn't on edge like before. He even took a step forward when Maylene got closer. She crouched to look at him closer but didn't try to pet him, even if she wanted to, it was training time. "He seems healthy… And has potential. It's a bit like Lycium when he was just a Riolu. Is he your starter?" She asked, looking at you.
Shinx weren't the most common starter, but it wasn't that rare. They were a bit harder to train than the usual so only new trainers with some pokemon knowledge received a Shinx. It was a bit like a badge of honor, it meant you were able to handle something a bit more difficult than the rest. A tiny part of you wanted to say yes… After all, Fang was just your second pokemon you caught him early in your trainer career. It would make you seem like a better trainer if you said yes.
But Maelstrom was your starter, and that was important. Important for you and for him.
"Actually… No. I caught Fang after leaving Sunyshore. My starter is a water pokemon and has some trouble walking around the city." You said, grabbing Maelstrom's pokeball and releasing him.
She raised an eyebrow, confused. Probably finding it weird for you to have a water and an electric type pokemon. Someone like you would avoid those pokemon, but somehow you ended up with two pokemon of the types that scare you the most. She was going to say something but her words died in her mouth as soon as she saw the shiny golden scales of your Magikarp. "Is that…?" She managed to say dumbfounded.
"Yeah, my starter is a Magikarp. A shiny one. His name is Maelstrom." You say calmly, your pokemon bouncing once and looking at your friend and her Lucario.
At first Maylene just stares with an open mouth, then her cheeks bulge as she tries to hold her laugh, turning her head away from you and trying to hide her reaction. You expected this but the fact that she is even trying to hide it surprises you. You thought she would laugh out loud and think it was a joke. You even had a little speech ready to make her understand Maelstrom's potential. You guess it's not needed.
"S-sorry… That surprised me." She said, trying to calm down as her pokemon glared at her for being rude. "I knew Cynthia wanted to train someone to defeat her and when I heard she picked you I expected…" She takes another look at your pokemon. This time she can hold back her laugh. "...Something else."
Maelstrom seemed pretty calm, not troubled by Maylene's laugh. Fang felt a little bad for his packmate, but he kind of understood that first reaction. You just sighed, this was going to become a trend as you show your team to people. "She did give me more options, but when I saw this Magikarp… He felt stronger somehow. Not strong now but something tells me he will be stronger in the future." You say calmly, remembering that day. The day you became a trainer.
She nodded, slowly. Not fully understanding what you mean. Doesn't she have the ability to see potential like you do? Maybe she doesn't… She moved to the side, finishing the last touches to the obstacle course. You now realize her movements are a bit slow, sluggish. At least for someone like her. Even after spending so much time away from each other, you still recognize the signs of fatigue in her body. "Are you okay, Maylene? You seem tired." You ask, a bit worried and getting close to her while your two pokemon observe the training room.
"Huh?" She seems surprised as she looks at you again. "Y-yeah, don't worry. Just… Gym leader's duty. I had to work late yesterday… But don't think even for a second I will go easy on you just because I'm a bit sleepy." Her cocky smile was back as she passed an arm over your shoulders, making you crouch to her level, unable to escape. You almost forgot how strong she was. "But I'm a good friend so I'm going to let you decide. I have a couple ideas to test your pokemon level of training…" She released you, but it felt like now you had a rock on your shoulder, your movements slow, like if you were underwater. Oh, right… The training collar. Your body felt heavy but it was manageable, this was the real training. As you got used to moving with this new weight, she explained to you her ideas. She knows you want to try to get a bit closer to that Buneary, try your luck adding her to the team, so she included her in the training today.
[] Sparring match against Belle. Your two pokemon against her. Maylene doesn't expect you to win but it's a good way of testing your pokemon's limits. [Training effectiveness +; Belle relationship ++]. [???] If you win.
[] Normal training with Belle. Training with a stronger pokemon is always a good way of gaining more fighting experience. This will also help Belle learn how to control her strength a bit more. [Training effectiveness ++; Belle relationship +]
[] Maylene's special training. Belle will not participate on this. It's a special training that will leave your pokemon exhausted as the Gym leader tests their limits. On a low roll they will be too tired to train the next day. [Training effectiveness +++]
At last the long awaited update. Sorry for taking so long. After my trip to Italy I had to take a couple days for myself to rest (We ran out of money and the trip back was a nightmare) but then I got inspire. I spent the last two weeks writing notes and worldbuilding for a future more serious project. But I'm done with that for now so I'm back to writing the quest.
I'm a bit rusty after almost a month without updates, so sorry if the quality is a bit low. It took me almost three days to write this post. Next ones will be better.
