You had no doubts about your answer. One of the things Cynthia has taught you is that a pokemon starts to become strong for real when they have something to fight for. And this Shinx clearly has something now.
You reach with your hand and the Shinx closes his eyes. He looked nervous, like expecting you to do something else. You reached for his head and petted him slowly, with a smile. He looked at you, confused by your actions.
"I'm going to accept you into my team. I will help you grow stronger. I want to be stronger too so… We will grow stronger together." You looked into each other's eyes. Not as a challenge but as a sign. You are now equals. He will follow your commands but because he wants to. Not only because you captured him.
You approach one of your empty pokeballs to him and he touches the button with his paw, turning into energy and going inside the ball. It shakes only once and then seals itself.
Your first catch. You almost died but this was your first catch. Your smile starts to grow and then you stand up, raising the pokeball into the air and looking into the sky.
"I caught a Shinx! Yeah!" You scream in joy only to be meet with silence. You saw someone on tv doing this once. It looked fun.
"... I'm going to sleep now." Said Lily before floating to Violet's tent without another word. What a way of ruining your fun. You felt a bit embarrassed now but at least Violet was smiling.
"Congratulations Haru." She said. She was smiling but there was something else there, you are not sure of what exactly.
"It feels great to catch your first pokemon!" You are still smiling wildly. This is great. You have Maelstrom but… This is amazing. Your first catch. Maybe you will get to evolve him into the strongest Luxray ever. You might even get to fight against Volkner's Luxray with your own in an epic battle and…
"Yeah… I know how you feel." Said Violet in almost a whisper stopping your thoughts for a moment.
Why was she…? Oh… Oooh… you are SO dumb. Of course she feels bad right now about this. She is probably not remembering her happiest memories right now. She needs to move forward and leave the past behind. You got a bit more serious.
"Hey, Violet…" You said. She looked at you, shaking off whatever she was remembering at that moment. "You should do the same. Catch pokemon again. Train a team. You need to do it."
She looked at you, surprised by how straightforward you were being. Deep down she knew that you were right. The first step to leave the past behind was to start forging a new future but… Did she really want to leave what happened behind?
"I'm… Not sure, Haru. I don't know if I'm ready yet…" She said just above a whisper, no longer looking at your eyes. You just sighed and nodded.
"I understand. Just… think about it. I will take first watch." You said turning around to walk away, but she grabbed your arm. It surprised you how serious she looked now.
"You are going to rest. You still need to fully heal, we can't use potions on you." She said. She was… well, it seems that when it's time to take care of someone she leaves all her sadness and troubles behind. It doesn't seem like you can convince her to let you keep watch.
"Okay, okay… But you need to sleep too. I will… leave Maelstrom outside his pokeball. He will keep watch." You took your other pokeball from your belt. You probably should keep him informed about what happened while he was inside his pokeball.
Anyone would look weirdly at you for suggesting to leave a Magikarp to keep watch, but Violet just smiled and nodded. She then yawned almost at the same time as you did and blushed.
Yeah, you are both tired. Time to get some rest.

Haru, his… trainer? Left the Shinx outside his pokeball too. He was healthy after using some of Violet's potions. He felt grateful to her too. Even if she wasn't the one who jumped in front of a Luxray for him.
He was outside of his pokeball because he had a mission. Keeping the group safe from any enemies that lurked in the shadows. He was ready to fight anything! Maybe not Luxray… but anything that isn't Luxray!
He took an active approach to his mission, walking around the camp constantly, glaring at the trees now and then just in case someone was stalking them. He imagined himself scaring other pokemon trying to take their food or lives just by glaring at them. Heh. He was awesome.
His new companion was… Less awesome. He was a Magikarp called Maelstrom. His trainer released them both with the same mission. He was another member of the pack, so they had to get along, but it was a bit difficult.
Once he finished with his fifth walk around the camp he decided to sit down next to the Magikarp. He was puzzled with what the pokemon was doing. He didn't move at all from his spot, just staring into the distance. The forest. Was he looking at something or just thinking? Can Magikarp think? He knew that you can't eat one, they are too tough. He also knew that they are really weak… but as a member of the same pack he can't think that about him. He was also the pack's second in command… kind of? Haru was the leader. Violet and Lily were his females, of course. Maelstrom was the second in command and he was… the new kitten. It hurt his pride slightly being under a Magikarp, but he would trust Haru's judgment.
Suddenly Maelstrom jumped and the little Shinx almost had a heart attack. Maelstrom bounced a couple times in the forest direction, where he was looking. An enemy?! How? He walked closer to that zone and never saw anything!
There was something there. Something waiting since the humans went to sleep. Waiting for a chance to get closer. It's eyes now reflecting the light of the campfire.
It ran away when Maelstrom moved closer. Afraid of being caught by the other Psychic pokemon it sensed.
Shinx just stood there as the Magikarp returned to his position next to him.
For the rest of the night the Shinx decided to stay close to Maelstrom, now totally believing that he was safer with him.
He fell asleep soon after, leaving Maelstrom to keep watch alone. His night plagued by nightmares about the thing in the forest.

Next morning you woke up to the smell of breakfast and your tent collapsing on top of you. It was just plastic and some aluminum rods, but it startled you. It took you almost five minutes to untangle yourself from the tent. Lily was just outside, smiling.
"You sleep too much. Violet had time to get ready, grab all her things and make breakfast." She said, helping you drag yourself out of the tangled mess that was your tent with her powers.
"I told you to wake him up gently." Said Violet, who was close to the fire finishing breakfast.
"And I did! He is totally fine and I even helped him get a head start. He has to start disassembling the tent anyway." She replied, still with a smile. At least she was having fun with this.
"I still have some complains about how you are helping." You said standing up. She just stuck out her tongue at you like the brat she was in response.
Surprisingly, she ended up helping you tidy up what was left of the camp while waiting for breakfast.
"You know… I felt something when I woke up." She said, looking as you checked your things just in case something was missing. You learned in the academy to always keep track of your supplies.
"Huh, I thought that only happens to boys." You replied before being hit in the head with one of the potions. On one hand, they were made of hard plastic, not easy to break. That's good. On the other hand… Ouch.
"Not that! I'm talking about a psychic track. A pokemon was around camp last night but never got close enough to sense him while I was asleep. It seems like the new recruit did a good job. But I'm worried. A lot of psychic pokemon can eat dreams and that's what that one was trying, probably. I don't want to spend too long in this route." She looked around, actually worried. When the strongest fighter in your group worries then you should worry too.
"Well, we will arrive to the lakefront just after sundown, so no more camping on this route for now." You smiled reassuringly and she just nodded.
You had breakfast with everyone after that. Shinx just stared into the forest after mentioning the good job he did. Maelstrom looked as proud of himself as a Magikarp can look. It isn't much.
When you were ready to leave you could swear that something was watching your group. Something behind the trees, something not even you could see. Luxray. He was making sure that you were leaving in the morning as he told your group.
What you didn't know is that he was mainly staring at the Shinx. He knew that this wasn't the last time he saw your group and that next time it would be a bigger headache.

The rest of the route is easier for a simple reason. Your group as a whole decided that you already did enough exploring of the forest. You even caught your first pokemon. Taking the normal route was the best option now to reach the lakefront before having to camp in the forest again.
It took a while and the sun is now setting but you finally arrive. You can see the water, you can see the buildings on the hill overlooking the lake. Valor Lakefront. A tourist trap and stop for traveling trainers.
The lake is bigger than you remember. It's been a long time since you've been here. Last time it was with the academy to study some of the aquatic pokemon. You slept in a cheap hotel, but it was fun.
You walked along the shore until you arrived to the streets between hotels and restaurants. It was full of tourists even in this time of the year. The sun was down and the streetlamps on. They were shining with that orange light that some old places have. You liked it more than the ones with white light. It was a cold night but it felt pretty cozy. You walked around with Violet and Lily for a while, enjoying civilization after a night in the forest.
It was getting late, so you had to find a place to sleep. Last time you went to a pretty shitty hotel but with your friends in the academy it was fun. You tell Violet about that place, and she seems to think about it until Lily talks.
"Oh, no. We are not sleeping there. We are going to the place that Cynthia told us about. I need a bath and good food. You can go to the cheap place." She said in a way that left no room to argue. Violet looked at you apologetically.
"But that's splitting the party! You never split the party!" You replied as dramatically as possible.
"This isn't the forest. It's a tourist town. As long as you don't jump into the lake or something you are totally safe." Lily huffed.
"You could come with us…" Said Violet. Something told you that even if Lily wasn't so fixed on going there… She wanted to as well. "It's only 5000 pokeyen, b-but if you don't have enough I can pay for you. You bought a lot of supplies, I understand."
Lily was starting to float away, you had to decide.
