A true hero... in training (Pokemon Gym Leader's apprentice quest)

[X] Move quickly and get in the way to protect the Shinx. Maybe the Luxray will not kill you.
-[X] "Please. I know he has given offense, but I ask you. Spare him. He was bred and abandoned by humans who didn't care. But I do. And I humbly ask that you allow him to live."

Hey, it's got humility and avoids too much of a challenge. Maybe we'll survive.

Maybe.

I'd rather just stick with the general action and let the GM decide what Haru says. Suggestions about Haru says are great, but I don't want to lock him into saying something specific instead of having the GM choose.

Current tally.

@lockingbane, @WanderingTwix, @Arbitbit39 would you be interested in switching over to my write-in? The one you guys are backing kind of comes across as us challenging the Luxray.

@Ardent_Dreamer and would you also be interested in flipping?

We're trying to appeal to his ego and sooth ruffled fur. If he's got a better nature, it's not a forgiving one. And as the leader of a pride, being shown such deference by a human would help bolster his image.
deference in this is stupid. It feeds his ego and gives him the CHOICE of being merciful or not. Thats why my vote went a different way. Instead of appealing to his anything, we just offer to take the shinx away and give him to the gym leader as proof of Poke breeding.

This works for all sides due to not insulting Luxra, or being unkind to the shinx, and also reminds the Luxray about the gym leader and their agreement.

Have peeps already decided to add the Shinx to our team?

I'm voting for the general option because I feel like Luxicato/Haru has a better idea of what to say and do in this situation than the current write-ins do. I dunno, I just don't like the feel of it.

Hoo boi... that's a Luxray. That's a Luxray who's more than a rank higher than Lily. That's a Luxray who just used Frickin' Thunder like it was no big deal. Whew lad. If we had any ultra balls, I'd be half tempted to throw them right now because Holy shit.

Actually...

There we go. I just like this better because it's just adding a sub-vote instead of trying to micromanage what Haru says. Plus I want my adorable little Shinx cub who's gonna grow into a big strong Luxray, oh yes he is!

Well, thing is he's already marked Shinx as a target. Getting between him is challenging him. And the point isn't to "give him" a choice. We literally can't do anything, he's that much stronger than us. He can "choose" regardless of what we do.

Deference here is smart because he was apparently at least trained by if not outright raised by humans before being dumped in the wild. A human paying homage and deference will sooth its pride more than anything. Also, a lot of us have become invested in adding the Shinx to our team as a new member, myself among them. He's got a lot of traits that will really help out as he grows, and he'll be a damned good 2IC for Maelstrom when they're both evolved. And saying that we're giving the Shinx to a gym leader as proof of illegal breeding smacks of passing the buck, something that may make the Luxray angrier.

For all the rest of you ignoring the write-in, here's a thought. It kind of comes off as us challenging the Luxray if we don't say anything at all.

That's a Luxray that was abandoned, his line can only learn Thunder through human intervention. Capturing him would not end well for any of us. Especially with his entire pack right there and more in the bushes.

Oh, I know, I know. Sorry if it came out that way, I was more just expressing my shock at how strong the Luxray is by saying that even with all those things, I'd still be tempted to try if we had a snowball's chance in hell.

Wait a tick, doesn't Volkner have a Luxray? Just checked Bulbapedia, he does. And it's around lv. 48-49 in the games, which I could see translating to a B+ rank, given that Volkner's typically the last gym leader challenged before the League (and Luxray isn't even his ace).

I could kind of see a bored Volkner just let his Luxray go out into the wild for a while, seeing as he isn't even accepting challengers anyway.

Meh, probably not true, but still, a guy can theorize.

But still, if this Luxray is B+ rank and an average pack leader for this route, one can only imagine what Volkner's Luxray is like. Is it rank A? Is it rank A+? Even higher? Aww man, I'm getting excited to battle him in the future! (Which is great, because I normally cheese his battle with the box legendary)

Ah, no worries then. Sorry for the confusion.

Given that he's usually the 8-badge Gym Leader that people go for, he's probably rocking at least B+-rank mon, yeah. His Luxray is probably the reason that he was able to negotiate the treaty Lily was talking about actually. He's probably also electrically aligned too, given him better camaraderie with them.

thats why I dislike pandering to the Luxray. My vote was for TALKING to it, and just asking if the Luxray is willing to have us just take the Shinx away and preferably to the Gym leader.

Pandering to its pride just does nothing more than have the Luxray flip a coin if it wants to listen to the human intervening in pack politics.

Asking to take it away instead shifts the focus towards the Gym leader.

... Shinx gonna be like Ash training Charmeleon isn't it
That would be horrible. The whole point of us getting this Shinx would be to get a loyal and skillful second in command. Getting a disloyal and skillful second in command is called "waiting for mutiny". Charmeleon was alone with the tantrums, but I don't think the pack leader Shinx would be. I really hope this is not the case, and if we save the the shinx here, I don't think it will be.

I think this would be the best option, if the Luxray saw (or had a reason to see) us as an equal. The problem is that I don't think he does. He is the king here, and we are an equivalent to a foreign traveller. Anything else than a submissive attitude from us will be a challenge. Even if such a challenge would not lead to us being smote, it really wouldn't help the Shinx's case any.

Thus, groveling, and hoping that the Luxray grants our request. Anything else would force him to decline it. He might be looking for a way to avoid having to actually kill this foolish Shinx, so I think we have a shot here.

And yeah, we haven't had a vote yet, but I'd like to get the Shinx as well, as explained in previous posts.

[X] Move quickly and get in the way to protect the Shinx. Maybe the Luxray will not kill you.
-[X] Entreat the Luxray to let you take Shinx away from here.

The spirit of deference is the important thing here, and trying to argue for things won't help. The Luxray will ask for details if they are important. Thus, I like this one more than the quotes one.

Edit: Or are you @TimEd trying to make us perform as if we were an honored emissary from the Gym Leader, whom the Luxray recognizes? This is a really dangerous game however. We would be both fooling the Luxray, and essentially impersonating an authority figure.

gotta go with the shonen. for real though i feel that putting ourselves in the way is character and i dont mind the dialogue.

But this is assuming it wants to talk. If it doesn't, no two buts about it, we're dead.

I mean, what are we going to do if Luxray says no? We start off on a bad foot then, because any action we make to prevent it is a challenge, and we do want to stop it.

And talking implies equality, which I can assure you Luxray does not agree with. Asking to take Shinx away? Yeah, that's a big no. Because that means someone that challenged him got away. At least by grovelling, we can try and soothe the wounded pride.

I mean, it's already offended that Shinx is trying to get back on its feet instead of submitting. It explicitly says that.

nope. Its basically the same vote as yours, but instead of interefering bodily, I just voted to ask the Luxray if we can just take the shinx and go.

thats why my vote isnt for bodily interfering. That would be stupid. Mine was to try to divert its attention from the Shunx by proposing to take it out of its metaphorical hands and give the shinx to the gym leader as proof.

Heres my write in vote btw. Its pretty much the only one where we dont bodily go between them both.

[X] With Lily as translator, ask Luxray to allow you to take the Shinx away.

I was thinking about simply throwing pokeball and catching the Shinx, but you made all those posts while I was asleep. *waves his fists angrily*
So, my choice:

[X] Move quickly and get in the way to protect the Shinx. Maybe the Luxray will not kill you.
-[X] "Please. I know he has given offense, but I ask you. Spare him. He was bred and abandoned by humans who didn't care. But I do. And I humbly ask that you allow him to live."

The "look into eyes" choice is directly challenging the Luxray. And only option after that is getting saved by Lily's Teleport.
The option without a write-in seems to me like blindly throwing us in and just hope for the best. I can totally see Ash doing that, but we're not Ash. We're gonna win the league :) I assume it was not the intention and I would probably vote for that if the more detailed options would not leave me with that impression.
The child option is ok, my second pick.
And the gym leader option - I think that we should focus on why Luxray should not kill the Shinx, not what will we do with him after. He probably does not care. While I understand that the idea is to invoke gym leader name to remind Lux of their treaty, but I don't think that will work. He already honored the treaty, the Shinx is in fact the one who ignored it.
