This was very good, I'd always personally imagined him stealing the sword later in his journey but you managed to get a very coherent interpretation of his backstory fleshed out succinctly while also keeping me in the moment. Nicely done.
Been kind of thinking about stuff mentioned in the first post and the resulting speculations, like the opening in the Tyrant's guard after killing the wife and the Hero saying he forgot his teachers. And generally how much his life must have sucked. I think I'll stay away from that depressing backstory in the future.

And yeah, stealing the Blade probably happened later in the journey, but this flowed better for me, so...

Yeah, when you think about it he's actually a pretty chill guy considering what he's been through and currently dealing with. It comes across somewhat in the quest but he's not overbearing about it. Which is good because if he tried to get too in your face edgy about it then it'd leave him totally open to Gisena absolutely dunking on him considering her own backstory and what's currently happening over there.

Hmm, so Sleep In and Save 1 Option are a given unless we get an upsurge in votes or the devil whispers in our ears once again. That's not too bad. Then I'll go with the one whose aesthetics I like.

[X] Sleep In
[X] Save 1 Option
[X] Total Eclipse

Male Maiden sounds even worse than Male Sorceress, but the Hero is secure enough in his masculinity that it won't matter.

Edit: Gisena's teasing is going to be epic though.

This is Arete choice basically just as far behind as my original vote of Thousand Cuts, but since we're pretty guaranteed a 25 cost pick at this point I'll just toss in some support for my preferred option of them. If we're going to make the longterm investment, then go for the long term return of that sweet sweet ++Progression. ++All Stats is also actually extremely strong, I'd previously undervalued what pluses did, but the Specs on Evening Sky showed pretty clearly even just two pluses are pretty crazy. The Apocryphal mitigation it offers is nothing to sniff at either.

Ugh, Total Eclipse just got the omake power to save it from elimination... we're not quite deadlocked, but this will certainly be a complicated vote to resolve.

Vote is closing in ~30 minutes, btw!

Reforged shall be blade that was broken.

So, I think people have said things around the idea, but I'd like to explicitly call it here. The Forebear may or may not bodyjack us or steal the sword (I think not*), but he is absolutely coming back. There's never an upgrade of our.... our Forbear's Blade that isn't just "be more like the Forebear," except for Fell-Handed Stroke, but Thousand Cuts filled that hole. This is presumably because his Accretion is so swole that it's just easier for Hunger to follow the grooves already carved in reality, but that's not an alternative explanation, just the method.

Thick as Thieves was the most blatant about this before the update, but "Once and Future" is honestly just saying it.

*Pretty sure the Forebear will be a bro, actually. We're Thick as Thieves, after all!
*Forbidden Art: Abduction. The forceful seizing of another's armament, inconsistent in applicable and terribly risky, as aspects of the prior wielder may impose themselves upon you. The hero stole into the Tyrant's Catacomb and emerged bearing the sword of the Tyrant's progenitor. That blade now lies broken, and with it its wielder.
I'm not saying anything clever here, just wanna be sure that I am in fact seeing the obvious thing that was said from the start and not jumping at shadows. The line between the two can be pretty thin. The one bit that does feel like paranoia is the "its master" below, which could either be Rihaku not wanting to say "your" again or an actual thing.
Accretion - Infused with a spark of Accursed power, the blade slowly repairs itself as you progress, assuming a new form well-suited to the character and strengths of its master. As your power grows, so too shall its form be refined, become ever sharper and mightier without limit.

I'm skeptical of us ever extracting all the utility Total Eclipse seems to offer. It makes us into some kind of Maiden-equivalent, but what does that mean in practical terms? The option doesn't say, leaving us to speculate based on AST 1.0, where the clearest account we got of the Maiden's powers came from a Duty-driven zealot suffering from blood loss.

Pushing for Eclipse as a 'do everything' option seems likely to lead to buyer's remorse. It's a strong potential-flavored EFB, sure, but further developments are almost certainly going to come with opportunity costs and Arete expenditures. Perhaps we could make Letrizia into a Sorceress; how much are you willing to pay to do so? The magic system's also implied to cap out at a much lower level than Hunger's previous world, where we couldn't safely linger even as a Combat-type Cursebearer.

Once and Future promises a straightforward path to power, one that we want to walk anyway: Rank. The more we invest in it, the better OaF's bonus becomes. And then there's the lore: I don't want this quest to end without having pried open the mystery box of the hidden masters and peered inside, at least glimpsed the face of the enemy. We never faced Jotarun or saw the Heroine on screen, only learned her name after the fact. Hunger's path is harder and colder than Nameless', and his vengeance may be eons away, but it makes sense for him to dig deep into the Forebear's Blade for reserves of power in a way that going all-in on our new cape doesn't.

I don't think we can afford to worry about bodyjacking, not without crippling ourselves with paranoia. The Forebear's Blade stayed true to Hunger all the way up to him striking down his descendant. We picked it as a Lesser Remittance, the Accursed himself imbued it with a spark of his power. The world is objectively out to get us, but our panoply? If we doubt our weapon, we've already lost.

Rihaku previously said that it could take years for us to achieve Unshattered's Rank 7+. But thinking about that somewhat differently, that also means that with focused work and dedication, it could take us only a few years to reach those levels again. That's well within the reach of a Titanomachy-style training timeskip.

Having that level of power would leave us well within striking distance of an Armament's full potential power i.e. one of the strongest beings in this universe. To be that strong that quickly will make the rest of our time here a breeze and leave us time to explore the lore of the universe, become closer to our companions, work on mitigation, prepare for the next task or whatever else you feel like doing.

Frankly, I'm probably mostly influenced by the amazing Graces we've been shown in AST 1.0 when choosing Eclipse. Probably not the best reason, since Rihaku generally writes cool powers, but the power set has a special place in my heart, so what can you do?

Also, it's not just a magic system, it's a terraforming power and an additional means of controlling our future empires. The spice must flow!

Fair point, Reversion still has a special place in my heart as the most wholesome, gratifying power a protagonist of ours has had. Not the strongest or coolest, but come on, it was reified negentropy! It eased the bearer's pain, became stronger with time, could restore anything from lives lost to a broken phone... Naturally, we bartered away its analgesic properties and threw Seram into a training regimen consisting of repeated maiming like four updates later, but so it goes. There were some Graces worthy of the name, no doubt about it.

Still kinda bummed we didn't take Mental Apex. Seriously, imagine how amazing it would be to make a Von Neuman-tier genius like Seram even smarter. Just so shockingly busted, especially with the 40% training bonus and perfect Wits based attack. Too bad chronomancy is just too tempting. I'm sure it would've won if it went up again anything else.

Update is long... should be 20 minutes.

He awoke steadily from slumber, the high sun of noon creeping into his eyes through a giant's upraised fingers. Below was the chirping of birds and the slow, drawling hum of cicadas, trees creaking slightly in the breeze.

Slowly, the Armament above him flexed its fingers, steam pouring from countless apertures as it rose clumsily to its full height. From this distance he could clearly see how badly diminished was the weapon's current state: the errant, too-pale flickering of runes stenciled on its flesh; the choking, muffled retort of its damaged mechanical systems; and even the bone-deep weariness reflected in its stance.

You and me both. Though he'd slept in, he was nowhere close to fully recovered from yesterday's exertions. His physical body felt fine, perhaps even stronger than before, infused with a portion of the King Fish's thrashing vitality. The wound in his side stung sharply as he raised himself up with his elbows, but it was a brisk sharpness, jolting him awake.

But his powers of spirit, what Letrizia called his Astral Rank, was badly depleted still. It was a dull, hollow exhaustion, a blankness of the marrow, his soul's sharpness worn down to a nub.

"Good, you're awake." Gisena came into view, a pale, fatigued cast to her features. Without pausing she unleashed a Tide of Nullity into the open air, then turned and threw another.

Hey, you. You're finally awake. You were trying to reach civilization, right? Walked right into that Astral ambush, same as us, and that giant robot over there.

I almost thought it would end up being a false alarm and the day would pass uneventfully. Luring us into further reckless expenditures. Well if it can kill us now no need for such convoluted plans. Hopefully the lie-in will be have been enough.

Man, gotta say, if my understanding of the Exhausted condition was then what it is now, I would have voted for El Stats

I hate that goddamn vote, so I'm at least glad it's over. Having us fight between 5 EFB equivalents predictably turned the vote results into a goddamn mess. I'd rather not been offered that choice at all when it's all said and done. Just continue like usual, y'know?

But hey, none of that will matter if we die here, so at least there's that!

The quality of Grace is not constrained. From Maiden and Martyr both does it flow, promising in one hand Deliverance and in the other Judgement. It is Grace that gives the Wretched and Doomed of the world salvation, and yet in that Grace can be found the undoing of all that is wicked and cruel. At long last, Grace will fall upon this bedeviled world.

"I look ridiculous."

Gisena smiled, pulling her fingers through the glowing aura around you and observing the sparkles that formed in her movements wake. "It's quite fetching, really - heroic, even."

Hunger grumbled in disagreement, yet somehow even that sounded melodic and pure. "I look like I should be transforming while spinning in place and shouting about judgement in the name of the moon."

Gisena folded her hands under her head, her pout sweet enough to drive mortal nations to ruin. "Is that any way to describe having attained the highest Grace, the truest Virtue, the pinnacle of all that Sorceresses dream of?" She smirked. "You do look quite cute, though."

"I look like a marching band conductor someone threw glitter on!"
