It's because your (Einar's) father is also covering most of the expenses, (we're still living at home and he can get away with that due to all the time we spent helping him, despite his stress) as is Kara's father (whom we made a deal with during our marriage to Kara, for taking up the job of protecting his mead hall).
Everyone in the family is chipping in to make sure the kids are nice and healthy.

The Islamic invaders there have just won a very strong victory. Not strong enough to kick the Italians out, but enough to where they can stay put for a few decades.
