A Magical Anomaly

In that case maybe a back to back duel. First day we take on Starlight Aqua and the next Argent. Purple can take care of the combat side while 'Filia' can take the social end of it. I think that makes sense narratively.

That's for you all to discuss and plan~ I merely put your thoughts to words!

And then write cute fluff pieces mixed with action and trauma.

That's certainly an option though! Do note that the MaGi have stated they want to go to Magi-con as well. And while Fia doesn't know this, you all do~ Was mentioned in the first Argent pov I believe.

So have fun with that knowledge~

... Why do I suddenly feel like we need a romance sub-plot?

At least part of the reason is the song I'm listening to I know, but it feels like the world's about to hiccup us into one for some reason.

Gotta Love when the work just randomly decides to hiccup you into a romance plot.

Love that friday occurance.

Just like how you always trip and fall with toast in your mouth onto Sempai on a Monday

"Yeah… leave it with me, I'll have a chat with some other students and some of the teachers. Being student council has its perks~ No way you're the only one she's done that too. Hell, we've got cameras in the classrooms, and I know the AV club has to have at least someone who's tapped into them for some reason. Nerds, the lot of em, but they're pretty nice if you offer them some candy. Or attention."
Ah yes, the 'student body that has more power than the actual staff over the school' trope, a classic.
Anyway, back to your regularly scheduled meeting of Fillia Inc where we talk about the best ways to beat up magical girls. And oh boy do we have options this week.

The rest of the school day is, as you'd expected, free of tribulation or challenge.

Sure the constant feeling of tension assaults you whenever you so much as step into class. But the wary gazes and glares are oddly assuring after being exposed to them for so long.

The knowledge that nothing has changed. That class will continue to be class. You, a solitary figure in a bustling classroom of children.

There's Yellow of course, the outlier in the classroom of constants. While she may not say anything to you, she at least hangs around you during lunch, chewing away on a sandwich of sorts with something crispy in the middle that crunches when she bites it.

A loud, crackling sound. That oddly seems to drown out whatever the people around you say.

She tilts her head ever so slightly as you eat. Towards the door that opens and divulges Alice in all her attention grabbing glory.

Interesting, a slight furrow to her expression. A slight glare marking her cheery face as she looks around. Or at least you think it's slight, you can only catch the side of her face, and when she looks back at you, she's all smiles.

…Though the girls that were failing to whisper bad things about you have gone oddly quiet, and pale…

…Is one of them passed out? No, wait, she's shivering a little.

It's winter you suppose, she probably should wear the school blazer if she's cold in here. You can't actually feel the cold, Babr-e Bayan's barrier keeping the temperature at a comfortable, if slightly nippy temperature.

Hmm.. Nippy… nippy… Nippy's a fun word… You should use it more…

Well, either way, school continues as usual, Alice seems just a bit more… clingy than before though, having you wrap your arms around her arm instead of how she tends to do it… eyes dropping down to look at your legs or over you before turning and glaring for a brief moment.

Whenever you're not looking mainly. But having your Bubble kind of defeats the idea of peripheral vision. Eh, it is what it is you suppose. Alice is bright, bubbly, super kind.

But you guess even she has people she doesn't like. Well, other than those people from her school before this one.

…You really should be focusing more on the book you're listening to… Really you should… but having gone through two of them in the span of… far less time then it should have taken, your brains a little burned out as it is.

Interesting… listen though, that's for sure. A book on angels, on how they differ in interpretation based on who's presenting them. Talking about some angels appear as humanoid figures with two wings. And how others appear as non-human figures. As rings and balls with hundreds of eyes and uncountable wings.

Of beings of terror and reproach while others are beings of salvation and saviors.

Common themes of Fire and Light manipulation, or at least they're commonly used to represent healing and rejuvenation.

Which has you wondering about why your Angel's Halo doesn't take both those themes…

An Angel's halo is usually gold, or a ring of light. Yet your Halo is a pitch black ring, cracked in places with spots of bright purple. And where fire might be appropriate, its lighting that you tend to see…

Is there meaning behind that? More than just some sort of flair for your powers, to match the theme…. You can't say. But it's an interesting observation and something to mull over maybe.

The audio book on Grendel was the same, more description of the Monster. Or at least what was called a Monster in this reality according to Elly. It makes you wonder if Grendel actually existed, with how detailed the descriptions are. Or at least some of them are.

Some Grendels have incredibly long arms. Long enough to drag on the ground as they walk. Creating tracks that seem like those from a carriage, luring in unsuspecting knights or soldiers before flicking those arms like whips. Crushing through steel and bone alike with hardly any issue.

Others describe Grendel as a giant pillar of malevolence and evil. Something that oozed a feeling of absolute evil that pressed and molded those who got close into beings that existed solely to satisfy a primal need.

There was, one interpretation that sticks in your head as you pull the earbuds out and smile at Satsuki, you in Purples attire. Satsuki in schoolwear.

A reversal of the tale. That puts Grendel as the victim and has Beowulf murder both her and her mother in pursuit of power using a sword in her lair. A giant's sword. Or perhaps a giant sword.

Why does that resonate with you? Because someone tried to kill Mum? Because someone probably killed you and then Mum in one of your loops?

… You don't think you've ever saved mum in a previous loop… not if everything that's gone on afterwards feels so alien and unpredictable. So were you killed early in that instant?

But how would you know that mum was killed in that same instant?

You furrow your eyebrows in thought, breaking Purple's persona for the briefest of moments as a thought worms its way into your mind.

What actually triggers your resets? What makes you go back in time to the start once again…?

"Are you okay Purple? Ice Cream headache?"

You blink, eyes snapping to the brilliant red of Satsuki's as your expression calms and mind blurs. Settling back into Purple's mask of confidence and assurance. Giving Satsuki a polite tilt of your head and apologizing for phasing out.

She waves a hand, her other one delicately slicing into a piece of strawberry frosted cake, and bringing the slice to chew on. The upper floor table at this cafe being positioned with a window to your side.

More tables in clean rows, plenty of space between chairs, and each table even has its own vase of flowers. Blooming brightly in the burning afternoon sun.

The sun seems to have wonderful timing you'd say. If only because its rays shine down in such a way that it reflects off Satsuki's form, making her eyes glint and bringing out that crimson hue in them as she narrows and looks at you again.

"Was there a reason for this outing?"

Another slight tilt of her head, both arms primly in her lap as she dabs her lips with a napkin. You shake your head, paper ruffling as you tell her you just wanted to relax a little. Get to know your new friend a little more after a hectic day.

She raises an eyebrow at you. But shrugs.

"As you wish. I can tell you more about myself. If you're willing to do the same. Information is a valuable resource afterall."

You give her a nod, not opposed to flourishing a little of Imperial Purple's many tales… or well…

Your rift hunts count as tales right? Probably.

She flicks some of her hair, combing her black locks behind her ear as she hums for a moment.

"As you may know, I am Satsuki Ayame. Heiress to the Ayame name. And yes, that's the same Ayame as Councillor Ayame, my father. We're something of a high class family. Similar in theme to the Noble families you'd find in Eternia. We're actually something of a branch family to the Maldune's over there. My great, great, great, great grandfather decided to form a city here along with a few other families, and so Delaro came to be. The Ayame lineage has been instrumental in the city's day to day running, managing most of the city's logistics, enough so that Father has earned himself a spot as a Counselor for the city."

She takes a sip from some tea, poured from your teapot, and lets out a sound of delight. Praising the tea as you nod in acceptance.

"You may want to know more about me, but I doubt there's much to say. Most see me as something of a sheltered rich girl. And as loath as I am to say this, I will say that they aren't completely wrong. I was homeschooled by tutors for my early life. And when I was old enough, I was sent to a school for the… more affluent people in the city. I don't wish to divulge too much, but shall we say some stuff happened, and I decided it was for the best that I move to Senshow High, where I happen to attend now if you wish to find me for something."

You make a show of making a note of that, giving her a nod, and then meeting her eyes when she returns her own.

Your turn you guess.

A head is tilted in thought, eyes looking up to the ceiling for a moment before you nod and meet her own once more. Purple meets red. And you scribble out a quick story of your first rift.

A tale of castles and rogues. Of exploring, of fighting. Of somehow beating a six armed Interloper in sprays of sparks and sonic blasts.

You, as is expected of you, embellish the details a bit. Making the Rogue Variant seem more dangerous then it was. Adding a few minor injuries here and there. Letting your purple eyes glow as you craft a story worthy of Purple's name.

And when you finish… the only reaction you get is a hum. And a chuckle from Satsuki.

"I do wonder how much of that is actual truth?"

There's no ridicule in that, her tone more teasing than judgmental. Red orbs glittering with a calculative edge as she hums. Your reply a simple answer, more truth than fiction.

"We've had a few magicals that broadcast their Rift hunts. So I can't discount your own story too much. Battles are a great source of adrenaline, and in a culture that has long absorbed Magical Girls into it, it might as well be expected that those that share their ventures into the rift tend to have quite a hold on public opinion. Witnessing a Magical in her element, fighting against the forces of evil attempting to escape and threaten those close to them. It's quite a story."

She glances ever so slightly to your side, an easy trace from her sight to one of her many guards.

"I'm quite happy to know you came out of that alive. It would be a shame to lose a friend because they ventured too deep believing they could handle it. Make sure you carry a rip cord of some sort would you? To run is not to sully one's honor. Honor is meaningless if you're dead… a piece of advice I've learnt from the less savory elements of my entourage if you will."

You give her a smug smile, shifting your posture a little to a more relaxed one as you nod to her.

And so the two of you spend more time together. Just enjoying cake, ice cream, and a variety of sweets, until Satsuki apologizes and rises, saying she shouldn't be out too late.

She hesitates for a moment, looking around at the closing cafe. And then giving you the briefest of hugs before pulling back and blushing.

"Friends are rare. Especially ones that will listen and heed my advice."

And she runs off before you can really respond. Slipping into a car that waits outside alongside her guards.

You blink as you turn around. Catching a silver tie in the corner of your eye as the last guard slips inside alongside the rest.

Hopefully the transition isn't too jarring here~ Trying out some more interwoven transition stuff~

This chapter came out pretty well. May expand it later~ But for now, I'll say its finished~

Hope you all enjoy! Some Satsuki info, some hints, some ideas and thoughts from Fia~

Next chapter, we'll be heading back to the fun that is chatting with Reaper~ And then after that, some Rift hunting! (Though I've got to finish off your Magic and Abilities section on the new CS before that)

"So, you wanna know more about me? You sure?"

You sip from your tea cup as you stare at Reaper, enjoying the cinnamon and sugar that coats the sweet tea in your mouth as you give her a slow nod.

It's rather late right now, or at least a bit later than you usually end up down here in your castle's dungeon.

But you attribute that to the incredibly dry, yet interesting reading that is Elly's new book on Advanced Runes. Lots of information, dense structures of Rune work that form Glyphs that form Circles.

But, you feel like you're understanding more of it slow as it is. So a net positive maybe.

Another reason for your lateness, is also related to the joys of reading. Though in this case, it's in audio format, losing yourself in listening to some lady with a melodic, soothing voice, recounting information on famous blades.

Honestly… her voice was way too breathy, it's like she was breathing in your ear… and you can't say you did-

Nope.

Apparently, Curtana is a sword with sisters. One being Joyeuse and the other being Durendal. The former, apparently, was forged to contain a lance in its pommel…

You have no idea how that works… Lances are basically a spear with a large spike of metal at the end… and very heavy near said end.

And fitting that inside the pommel of a sword sounds very, very hard…

But eh, legends are legends for a reason. Durendal on the other hand, was known as an indestructible weapon. And an incredibly sharp one at the same time.

Able to cut through boulders in a single swing and such.

It kind of makes you wonder how it'd react to that sword breaking thing you did with Curtana on Azure… Would it break? Or would nothing happen?

You file away the thought for now, head tilting a little towards Reaper.

You can listen to that lady whisper about ancient blades another day. Though, speaking of another day. Lillia wasn't with you for dinner today…

Apparently she and Jishiro were off on a dinner date or something, you heard it from mum, and considering how she wasn't panicking or worried, you think she was informed beforehand by it.

Dad wasn't, or at least he might have forgotten, especially with his exaggerated cry of "WHAT" upon mum explaining it to you.

He'd been ignored by the both of you, left to stew and grumble about no one telling him things… Mum had given him a hug, and a kiss on the cheek.

And then they'd had one of those weird conversations where they stared at each other and made subtle gestures and such…. Maybe they had like, telepathy or something? Or it was just a parent thing, you remember reading about how people who stay intimately together sync up in a way…

Eh, well… Lillia hadn't been home when you'd left, having grabbed an extra portion of dinner while no one had been looking.

Though… yet more oddness came with that… because the portion had been neatly packaged into a container, and there was even a note with your name on it… and a message to bring back the container when you were finished…

Mum and dad had been in the middle of a conversation when you'd stashed the portion into your shadow void thing… so you didn't ask anything. But, as is par for the course so far, the mystery deepens or something.

You let out a breath, thoughts splitting and boxing neatly as you focus back on Reaper. Sipping tea with cinnamon and sugar notes as she starts to speak after gathering her thoughts.

"Did you want to know about me specifically? Or more on The Orphanage? Or both?"

You raise three fingers, teacup clinking quietly onto the saucer as your shadowy void drops a piece of paper with a few questions you'd thought up in the middle of class. You slide that to the middle of the table, free hand slicing into a piece of frosted cake while Reaper reads it.

"Right… Well, guess we can start with The Orphanage then. Get to stuff about me later. I think I mentioned this last time, but the Assassin's guild is something of a mish-mash of themes. But the main structure is relatively consistent. We've most likely got a branch of it in every city. Definitely at least one in every major city, maybe two. The owner of a branch is usually the most powerful Assassin or Magical under The Orphanage's employ. And they're allowed to style or theme their little branch however they want to. Problem for anyone hunting the guild though, is that the location tends to change at least once every quarter year."

You nod along, mentally writing notes.

"Working from the bottom up, you've got the 'Children' or 'Operatives' depending on how you want to refer to the… less skilled or newer members. Usually low on the totem pole, can find them by the dozen. Thugs, bruisers, down on their luck people looking to make a few bucks or relieve their darker urges. Someone of your caliber, taking down me and all that, probably doesn't need to worry about any of them really. Once a 'Child' has worked enough jobs or built up a good enough reputation, a 'Guide', someone trusted by the City's 'Branch Head' or the Branches 'Mother' will run them through some trials and cherry pick if the 'Child' is worthy of ranking up to a higher status. 'Child', 'Dependent', 'Independant'. Stringent tests that get harder the stronger you get. But it's similar to a Magicals test when they want to Star and whatnot."

She shrugs.

"Classic Guild operating procedure and whatnot, sure you've read about it in a fantasy book or something. Eventually, a Child may be chosen to become a 'Mother', and take over or start a branch of their own. On doing so, they get introduced to the 'Director'. Or Queen Bitch as most of the top level girls call her behind closed doors. Pain in the ass lady with loftier than thou goals that she refuses to tell anyone. But long and short of it is, she runs things, and has the power to back it up. You don't actually meet face to face. And any calls from her are only ever audio only… But she's the scary sort, don't want to get caught up with her."

She snaps her fingers, jolting a little and then nodding.

"Right, right, speaking of people you don't want to get caught up with. Hunters. Terrifying people, most of the time Magical Girls, but sometimes normal assassins who've either been enhanced in some way or just are that skilled that they can beat Magical Girls… they're sent to take out Loose Ends. Or as our Branch Mother called them, 'Strays'. Hunters aren't part of the rankings, and while I've not actually dealt with one before, the stories and rumors have some weight to them… Famous assassins or high ranking girls disappearing one night. Not a bit of evidence, not a sign of a scuffle or anything. You could see one one day, and the next, they're gone as if they've been erased. From what I've heard, Hunters don't really wear anything significant, but the stories usually say they have black cloaks with a wolf's head stenciled in white on one breast or something… Yeah, definitely bad news. Let's move onto lighter topics, huh?"

You shrug, letting her continue with the explanation… lots of stuff for you to note down, mainly on the organizational stuff, but it's decent in some way you suppose. Assassins guild is run like a fantasy guild. People join up at a Branch of sorts, do missions and such to get ranked up, then eventually open their own or take over. All run by some mysterious lady that you don't want to get mixed up with.

You can feel the flags… you can feel so many of them rising from all this you're hearing…. Oh boy, more things to add to the ever growing list of things that'll probably happen.

Well, at least it'll be a fun interlude in your quest to strengthen your magical girls if nothing else~

Your eyes glow a little at the thought, skimming through a few plans the voices suggest to you on how to handle the guild if it actually becomes a problem. The obvious, Crush Them, being set aside in case you need it. Though there's the fun idea of taking over said guild and using it for information and stuff, very Villainous… though you wonder how well you'd be able to manage all that with everything that's already going on… you'd probably have to take a backseat on the whole, world saving, magical girl training stuff if you took over such a large network as it was…. You need more hands… or people to use as hands if you want to plan that.

But an idea to box away for later maybe.

"When it comes to people who're stronger than me, there's technically more than two… but again, that's a technicality… Assassins, usually, are more physically focused, or at least tend to be better at the whole, killing people thing, then the working as a group thing. Which is why we're usually given handlers and such. I can't speak about my Handler, or any of them really. Under pact and what not. But I can at least say a bit about the Assassins stronger than me, if not too much."

She opens her mouth, and you feel a spike of magic before something zaps her, a crackling bluish bolt of lightning that has her yelp and clutch her hand. A circle of intricate glyphs you can't fully read slowly fading in time with the electricity losing its intensity.

"O-Ow… Okay… Guess I can't say much at all… great… I'm fine."

You tilt your head, eyes narrowing just a little, and pulling out a can of Heal that you slip to her. She grimaces, but rolls her eyes with a huff as she downs the thing. Skin losing a slight paleness you hadn't noticed as her eyes widen just a fraction, then losing a tension you also hadn't noticed.

"Thanks. When it comes to people stronger than me… you've got two, really three to worry about. One is called Crossbow. She -"

The hum of electricity gathering has her stop talking, and she glares at her hand where the circle faintly shines.

"Can't tell you more… sure, why the hell not. You can figure out why she's so dangerous based on her name…. Huh, that didn't trigger it. Good to know. The Second, are a pair, Keeper and Hound. Can't say anything about them. But they're dangerous in their own ways. Stupid pact."

You nod again, thinking for a moment as you ask her which of them is most dangerous. But she shakes her head, telling you that they're both dangerous in their own ways.

"I'm something of an infiltration specialist, and great against single targets. Being a Violet and all means I can trick people into seeing me as someone else and combined with being part of a family of assassins, well. Most people don't see me coming. Keeper and Hound being a pair makes them scary enemies in a direct fight. And…"

She pauses for a moment.

"Hounds a-" The hum of electricity increases and she rephrases " Think of Hound like a Bloodhound, and form your own connections"

And the crackle fades again.

"I'd be able to help you more if this pact wasn't here, but you're forced to make one once you get to the top five in the rankings."

She shrugs, and you tell her that she's given you plenty to work with. She rolls her eyes at you, but gives you a grunt either way.

"When it comes to me, not much to say that you've not heard. Unless you had something specific you wanted to know?"

You shake your head, and she shrugs again.

"Eh, fair. Family of four, Me, My sister, Mother and Father. Extended family of ten or so technically, but most of those are half siblings or parents at best. Mother and Father got around so to speak, something about being a way to relieve tension after a mission that they both went along with. Never knew why… I've, kind of just always been trained to be an assassin really. Long days of intense training, and when I wasn't training, I was studying. Cold Mother, Strict Father, scheming Little Sister. The whole nine yards of joyous family you know?"

You're tempted to nod and say you understand, as is convention, but you shake your head, to which she grins.

"Yup~ No one really does. But thanks for the honesty. Family was kinda shit to be honest, though I still loved mum at the very least… she was nice when I did well and stuff… kinda a shame they went out as they did."

There's… an odd niggling feeling in the back of your head, and you follow through on it, sipping at your tea as you ask her how they died.

"Heh, you know I killed my sister. Mother and Father went out in a car accident. Car crumpled and exploded on being hit by a drunk driver in a truck. One moment fine, the next, poof…"

She looks down for a moment, and you give her some words of condolence, to which she huffs at. A question asks if it's okay to know their names, as a way to honor the dead and all.

She obliges.

"Father was called Rei, Mother, was called Tauriel"

And with that fun tidbit~ We call todays chapter to a close. A few hints, a bunch of exposition and information. Have fun breaking down whats useful and not~ I'm sure you guys will enjoy it~ Thank you again for your support. Life decided this chapter wasn't going to happen.

I decided otherwise. So hopefully its good for you all~

In other news.

ITS TIME FOR SOME DECISION MAKING

As you all have opted to take Morgana with you to the rifts, you have a plan to make~
Because you guys get to decide what her composition for her Minons happens to be~

Morgana, as of now, has 20 Points of Concentration she can use to summon Minons. The Minon's she can summon are:
- Knights (Cost 2 Concentration Each) (Each Knight on the field has a 5% Chance of Inflicting a Minor Wound onto a random enemy each turn (Increases to 10% if in Aggressive Stance) and a 1% Chance of Deflecting a Wound you would take that turn onto themselves (Calculated before Parry Effects) (Increases to 5% if in Defensive Stance). Knights act as Barrier points for Morgana, Sacrificing themselves to negate Minor Wounds Morgana may take.

- Guardians (Cost 5 Concentration Each) (Each Guardian has a 1% Chance of Inflicting a Minor Wound onto a random enemy each turn (Increases to 5% If in Aggressive Stance) and a 5% Chance of Deflecting a Wound you would take that turn onto themselves (Calculated before Parry Effects) (Increases to 10% if in Defensive Stance). Guardians also act as Barrier points for Morgana, sacrificing themselves to negate a Major Wound Morgana may take in her stead.

- Lancer (Costs 10 Concentration) (Only 1 May be active at any time) (Lancers are special units, having a 5% Chance of inflicting a Major Wound on a random non-flying type enemy (Boosted to 8% On Aggressive Stance). If that Major Wound misses, they roll a d3 (Boosted to a d5), exploding on a 3 or higher, and rolling at (15% * Roll Amount) that many Minor Wounds on nearby Enemies. Lancers also act as Barrier Points for Morgana, Sacrificing themselves to negate Critical or Major wounds on Morgana if no Guardians are left.

Morgana requires at least 5 Concentration Left over in order to directly assist in combat, otherwise, she will begin assisting once she reaches 5 Concentration as a result of Minon Loses. Minons cannot be Resummoned in the middle of Combat. However they can be summoned if a Short Rest is taken after a Rift/ Combat is cleared (Roll a D100 for an Event to maybe occur)

You may discover more Minon Types as a result of defeating further Witches in combat with Morgana~

Huh. Mother (and maybe father) faked their deaths to get out of the assassin business, and the assassin is actually Fillia's (half-?)sister? And she was tricked into taking out a hit on her own mom, apparently the only member of her family she actually liked. Maybe she was unknowingly acting as a Hunter?

It might be entirely unrelated. While I don't think (or remember if) it has been confirmed we're all more or less convinced that Fillia's parents run the local MaGi branch. According to Reaper the people who put out the hit on Mom are the Church who we've already seen are... an organization willing to commit to incredibly questionable practices in pursuit of their beliefs so I can see them putting a hit on high ranking MaGi personnel for unknown nefarious reasons.

Please. You're suggesting there's only one conspiracy in place, when there could be at least two completely separate conspiracies? Pshaw. Pshaw, I say.

The Church may have been the one make the hit, but the Orphanage was the one to carry it out, and I highly doubt that their choice of assassin to do the deed was a coincidence. Probably they were looking for Tauriel since her escape (presumably why she has the name-hiding magic going on), and only coincidentally found her because of the hit.

It would also help explain why this is the first time Fillia's managed to save her throughout the loops. This wasn't just a normal assassination, this was them taking care of one of their own. They were pulling out all the stops, not just whatever they were actually paid for. Also means odds are high there'll be another attempt.

If you have multiple minions do the chances they deal a wound of deflect one onto themselves stack up or are they rolled individually for each minion? E.g with 2 knights trying to deal a wound is it 1 roll with a 10% chance or 2 rolls witha 5% chance each?

Either way I'm not that keen on Guardians. 2 Knights in defensive stance are as good or almost as good as a guardian in defensive stance,(depending on the answer to my 1st question) have a higher chance to deal damage and cost 1 less concentration. The big advantage guardians have is they negate major wounds for Morgana instead of minors. But Morgana is/was a witch so they should at the back not in the middle of a melee so they should be less likley to get targetted by things. I think most enemies have been melee based?

I think the Lances is worthwile sicne on average they'll deal much more damage then 5 knights. Is there any reason to have a lancer in a defensive stance?
