A Magical Anomaly

Important dates on the objectives post has been updated. Along with some minor clean up.
Props again to ya Mura for going so far and making that for us. You have no idea how helpful it is, and jeez do you guys have a lot on your todo list~ Well, no one can say you're lazy, thats for sure!

--Your sister Lilia has been approached by either one of the Fae or the NOAC to become a Magical Girl. She's going to give them an answer as to weather or not she'll become one on Sunday, December 1st. The same day as MaGiCon.

I may be wrong, but I'm pretty sure I said this was Friday, not Sunday. But I can't recall that exactly off the top of my head.

Those chapter markings on that sheet are a godsend, really. Thanks for it!

Jeeez. Since when do we get 10+ votes on stuff? Wow this has started to grow nicely~

Thank you all for the votes! Lets get to tallying!

Now then, We're doing an interaction option this morning~ That'll be fuuun~

Base chance is 33, but as you all decided to pick questions/topics to pursue, I'll bump that up to 40% For what we're attempting now~

Lets roll and seeee (I really should use Story Telling dice for this... mmm Something to consider for next time)

Solid 81~ Which'll give Aya a Pep~ Woot! I think that makes 3 Peps for her if I remember things right, but be sure to correct me if not.

We have two books in the afternoon. So lets listen away! Maybe under the wintery afternoon sun and a tree.

Okay... Wow... Sure, Thats + 10 for Both Grendel and your Angels Halo training rolls. Be sure to use them~ I'm sure I've got some fun ideas to workshop with all once you hit the training roll!

Chill with Satsuki, and as you've got such low Mist, I'll just reset it to 0 and save us a roll or whatever. Sadly can't have negative mist lol~

Another Book reading session. This time Curtana and Runes at the same time.

And a +10 to Curtana, because why not. Also a good chunk of Progress on that Advanced Rune reading book. Very useful indeed!

And Rift hunting with Morgana, that should be an interesting tiiiime~ Do watch those those Void spikes~ They're rather loud to most magicals.

And now that the Fae are in play, even louder so~ I wonder if we'll come across any when we step from the rift~ And what effect Morgana will bring along~

hyyyype.

Chapter may come out tonight, or Tomorrow, we shall see!

You could very well be correct. I'd have to reread that chapter. Not sure which one it was but it was where Filia discovered her house maybe alive/haunted?

POV: The Director

Your eyes narrow as you flick a finger and continue to scan over your data-slate. The thin piece of strengthened glass enchanted with various runes along its edges to help with clarity and a bunch of other things you honestly don't understand.

A mixture of technology and magic into a very convenient device that blends both privacy and convenience.

Unfortunately, the text you're reading on the screen is the complete opposite of convenient.

Well, no. It is convenient. The Hammer's Core finally came in this morning. And with it, a bunch of incredibly classified, restricted and whatever other word you can use for, Don't let the Grunts see this, documents.

A large white sphere, almost too large to fit into the loading bay doors, apparently having inflated in size beyond initial estimates after having to reforge the outer, mythril alloy shell for additional shielding and robustness. A strange mixture of metals that's very much redacted, but the Core itself has the Orders white, gold, black color scheme all over it along with various insignia's, emblems and what some might even call charms…

Being The Director means you can't just let the tech heads down in Engineering read over the technical documents, nooooo, you're also meant to understand most of the basic stuff about this piece of magical technology or whatever.

Well, okay, you're not. You could be clearing your Dailies right now and finding that next Waifu on one of your many Gacha games…

But Sam's sitting in your lap as you nuzzle into her shoulder, so you've got to put your best foot forward when it comes to this!

She giggles quietly as she somehow senses your distracted self, a gentle nudge with elbow bringing all your focus onto her in a split second before you untense and grunt quietly.

Apparently the Core was crafted from some sort of incredibly dense mineral found in an old mine off in some Order blacksite.

No actual location listed, even to you. But those fanatics always were stupidly guarded about their more powerful experiments.

The crystal, named The Goddesses Blessing, because of course it is, is infused with a frankly ludicrous amount of raw magical essence. So much so that it has to be stupidly old to have sucked in that much magical power… the crystal's been chipped and shaped in some way that amplifies the resonance of magic inside… creating the equivalent of a nuclear reactor, but fueled by a magical crystal that probably won't run out. Ever.

The reflection of magic creating an immense amount of heat in the core and said heat is funneled through a series of magically enchanted siphons to split some of the magic off to be used as needed.

Mostly turned into mechanical power, though the raw magic can be funneled into other parts of Hammer's form if you or whoever happens to be driving it wants it to.

Another slate, the one in Sam's hands, lists the overall state of Hammer's frame. Various weapon mounts, both mundane and magical lighting up green as she taps and fiddles with their placement.

She's always had a better eye for this sort of stuff, at least when it comes to precision and proper firing angles and whatever else.

…Though you're rather happy that Engineering and the Council agreed that the Hyper-Velocity Driver was needed.

Every Mech needs a Big Fucking Gun. And nothing screams BFG like a cannon as large as the mech is tall mounted over one of its shoulders.

…Sadly you can't actually fire the thing in city limits. Or anywhere near it unless it's a full scale Breach event.

The shockwave alone promising it to shatter at least half of the city's inner circle in radius based on its projections alone.

But eh, it's a sniping weapon, not a close combat one.

You've got a literal building sized plasma blade for that!

Sam can probably sense your excitement at reading that being ready if her little wiggle on your lap is any meaning, and the way her eyes glitter on meeting yours with a mixture of amusement and charm.

All boys dream of giant mecha. And that wish only gets stronger the older you get!

In more annoying news, the remote control systems for Hammer aren't ready. And probably won't be for a few months. Meaning you won't be able to actually use it. The joys of being, quote on quote. Magically Null.

Not actually like the Nulls. But just not able to form magical links with stuff.

Meaning, it's either Sam or someone who'll be piloting Hammer if something happens for the time being.

A finger flicks through Sam's slate, and as if reading your mind, she flicks to the training charts like you'd been wanting. She gets a cheek pressed on hers, and she shifts her hair a little so you can read easier.

Sims are going well, the two main pilots, codenamed as Rage and Calm, and the spare, Fear, all getting good scores … even if they aren't as good as Sam's solo one.

But your wifes always been exceptional in everything magical, and you'd have it no other way…

Though it's a bit… odd that there's a way to psychically connect with the Core even though you're not meant to send anyone with too high a magical sense or psychic sense close to it…

Yeah… definitely odd…. Also means you can't have Lily have a look at it when she gets back, no ones got a better feel for magic and machinery then she does. And if the eerie feeling the tech heads have been whispering about means anything, it'll only feel stronger for the Magi.

A few more flicks through your data-slate. More questions on why this spherical Core took so long to manufacture. Mostly answered by redacted answers relating to the Crystal forming the inner core and what you manage to piece together as being "really hard to shape and pierce without it exploding or cracking".

There's an addendum… right before the warning to not let people with high magical abilities near the Core…. But that's entirely marked out with black ink…

Either way… probably safe to assign another squad or two of guards to it… last thing you need is someone nosey poking their head where it doesn't belong.

You've gotten way too many complaints of Aqua poking around and trying to record things in far too short of a time…

A head shake, a sigh, a pat on the thigh by Sam, and you keep skimming through the stupidly long report while Sam does the same with hers.

Maybe today will actually be quiet and uneventful?

…Fuck you just jinxed it didn't you?

POV: Fillia

Morning comes around once more, and this time, it's not with any terrifying nightmares or strange visions.

…Actually, it's not with a dream at all really. Just you flopping onto bed with a wonderfully exaggerated flump. And then blacking out.

All after a warm shower to get any water or chill from your hair. Babr-e Bayan protected you from actually getting wet, but you still felt slick and damp just being in the rain.

Maybe you don't like rain? Or maybe you like it, but just don't like the getting wet portion of it?

You contemplate the thought as you roll around in your bed, silently making a sound of joy in your head as you twist from one side to the other, hands unconsciously clutching the Doll to your chest as it gets squished whenever you roll onto your stomach.

But there's no complaint from the bundle of fluff and warmth and cloth in your hands as it pops back into shape.

Your hands hold it above your face. Looking into its button eyes as they stare back at you. Yet nothing changes. And so you let it fall onto your chest again and slowly rise.

A hand brushing through a pair of cream pajamas as your arms stretch above you and your joints pop in a satisfying feeling.

Today feels like a good day. And while Murphy or Fate or whatever other cliche might rule otherwise. You're going to do all you can to make today better than yesterday. Or any other day.

… You were gonna say that's not hard to do… but if you exclude all the nightmares and stuff… that's probably actually rather easy to do….

Maybe?

Eh, you'll make it up as you go, that's kinda how you've always done it. Don't fix what's not broken and all that.

Mum seems to notice your more chipper mood if the smile she gives you is anything to go by, eyes opening just a bit wider when she spots you up and about when she opens your door.

You smile back at her, leaning into her hug as she tells you food should be ready soon.

The rest of the morning is textbook, eating with family, getting dressed with Mum's help to tie your ribbon. Ignoring that flash of chilling Fear when she touches it.

Honestly, it's all become kind of robotic at this stage, though noting small changes does keep things interesting.

Like how your sisters wearing her glasses today on the way to school, your raised eyebrow getting a small blush but no explanation.

Alice is a constant in a life of whirling wind, always at the front of your door when you open it, always smiling brightly at you, though your own smile and hug into her chest has her sputter on her reply…

You think she actually keens a little when you do that, but that might just be you hearing things.

A glance around shows that the usual assortment of guards follow along in their hidden, but not really hidden ways.

Grey on the rooftops, invisible, but a wireframe.

Vermont doing his usual gig and flirting with various ladies when he passes… somehow making it look stealthy and natural, even if his eyes occasionally look at someone a little lower than you think they should.

The voices grumble a little too, and you agree that he seems as shady as always, even if he hasn't done anything…

Strom's as dapper as always. A mix of white and blue and orange blending into a flashy but surprisingly ordinary look as he follows close by. Eyes on a swivel, and very much alert for anything.

Maybe being a crook gives him training on this stuff or something. You dunno.

A flash of blue hair reveals Hayate or whatever Alice's guard was called. Smiling brightly at some people who approach him, and joining in conversation with them, yet never letting Alice stray from his gaze before cleanly joining back up with the group as if he was never gone.

You enjoy Alice's company as you get to school. Taking a breath and running through today's plan. Time to start integrating yourself into Aya's friend group. And seeing just what you can make this friendship into!

And here we have Chapter 74 for you alll~ Hopefully its a fun chapter with some plot advancement! We've got a heap to do, but a bit of worldbuilding never hurts right?

Stuff is advancing as the days tick over. Lets see if this Hammer is ever needed, or if it ends up being mothballed by our actions~ Should be fun either way!

Cya tomorrow for more AMA goodness! And thank you all for the support and feedback! love hearing your lurkers coming in and sharing your thoughts. Every opinion is super helpful to hear! Huuugs all!

Props again to ya Mura for going so far and making that for us. You have no idea how helpful it is, and jeez do you guys have a lot on your todo list~ Well, no one can say you're lazy, thats for sure!

Went and tracked the post down. Unless theres another update where you changed your mind you said Sunday December 1st.
"Right… Give me some more time to just… think it over yeah? Thanks… Really. You're a lot of help Aur. I'll just.. Uh.. Give me a week or something. We can chat about it after, say… uh… how's the first of December, Next sunday, sound?"

Eh!? I thought we blew up that core! The heck!? Did The Order have another just lying around?

Thank you very much!

If you want, it wouldn't be hard to soft retcon that date to friday if it fits your plans better. Lilia said she'd have an answer by Sunday. That doesn't mean she can't give it early depending on circumstances.

We shall seeeeee~

And you destroyed the Churches Reactor, not The Core.

Was mentioned in the same batch of chapters as the Church Assault, as was Hammer and the fact The Core was late.

I've not commented in this thread for some time, but I just need to say this. We totally need to steal the core.

It fits all of the criteria for a great object for a villain to steal. It is protected by the heroes, it was created by a group that hates us, it can be used to make a superweapon, there are strange whispers from the people working on it, and the crystal inside has the most macguffiny name I've heard in a while. The crystal is also probably from that mine under blue girl's hometown (and might be filled with the souls of those killed there.)

This will be a great team building exercise for our growing (EVIL) magical girl group!

I think there is some problem here - Fillia does not know about the existence of the core. And who is the rest of the group again?

I'd say that the Assassin and Elf can be, tentatively, called part of our magical girl group. They just need a couple more pushes, and I think we can do it with the power of friendship (and Stockholm syndrome)!

Obviously we can't steal the core when we don't know about it, but we will at some point learn about its existence. There are plenty of ways for that to happen through interaction with magical girls, the Order, or someone sensitive to magic sensing something. Also, the Director jinxed himself.

But if we steal the core, we can't fight Sam piloting a giant mecha! I mean come on, you guys have to want to parry that Hyper-Velocity Driver just as much as I do, right?

Eh!? I thought we blew up that core! The heck!? Did The Order have another just lying around?
We interrupted an exorcism ritual that was gonna do... something to Lorica which we assumed would result in the generation of the core item that would be handed over to the MaGi (We also blew up a reactor but that's a potentially separate matter). As we did not allow the ritual to complete we don't know if that was actually the case but, given what we've seen of the Church, that they have rituals for this at all would mean that something like that is actually nominally common or at least expected by the Church.

That the update explicitly calls out a black site probably away from prying eyes? Made of a secretive material they won't talk about? And it gives people working with/near it an unusual feeling? Totally full of people.

By the way @Blanaa

Was curious. Was Batty around when Filia, Argent and Azure were doing their joint rift hunt? If so, did he react to Filia in anyway?

Que Fillia pulling out Balmung to kill some Fae.

And Fate.

Pretty sure Balmung is a conceptual weapon that can cut through anything at this point, just depends on the collateral cause rewinding time seems to be the whole world getting torn apart.

Also, I just realized our Void Core, our "native" core (even if its artificial, another tick in the box for us being not quite human) since I'm pretty sure I remember it being stated as the one hosting our soul, is the one that costs more to level up.

But if we steal the core, we can't fight Sam piloting a giant mecha! I mean come on, you guys have to want to parry that Hyper-Velocity Driver just as much as I do, right?

Lmao. Parrying that massive steel rod off into a building. Hearing it crash and crumble behind us from the sheer force of the impact as debris and dust is shot off everywhere.

Definitely a fun image~

Not in this instance no.

While the Fae were back, they've been gone for long enough that a bit of, regrouping? They needed to check over the changes that had occurred while they were gone. So for now, Echo is still unaware of Fia~

Today's already proving to be a great day in your head. Mainly because you don't have Mrs B's class according to today's schedule.
It probably reflects badly on you as a student, but you've already forgotte-

No wait, it was Mrs Balamore or something like that right?

Eh, close enough. No reason for you to remember such a shady teacher, with any luck, she'll have been fired after one of the other students reported her for what she did.

No way she has a grudge after just you right?

Is what you want to say… but even without the various cliches of life, you wouldn't be surprised if no one's actually reported her.

Everyone seems to ignore your existence in the best case, and while you're sure it's your Null stuff, you can't say for sure.

All this to say, you're sure she's probably skulking around somewhere, trying to oust you for something or other…

You can only sigh quietly as you finish writing through another test, finger sliding along the screen and hitting the confirmation to submit it.

At least Physics is as interesting as always. Stuff about momentum and energy and various other topics that are surprisingly useful when it comes to Void Core stuff.

More ideas to add to your mental cork board. And plenty of red string to link them all together.

You're stringing a few of those ideas together while walking down the hall when it happens.

A shoulder slipping into your bubble. A feeling of malicious intent. And then you having to force your body to not slip sideways and Dodge as the shoulder crashes into you.

A foot joins in, catching your ankle and sending you tumbling to the ground as someone whispers.

A whisper of Freak. A whisper of Idiot.

Of Airhead, Of Weirdo. Of Creep.

So many whispers, so many ridicules as people turn ever so slightly to watch and gossip.

The girl who crashed into you reaches to grab you, to do something.

Maybe press you against a locker. Whisper or shout at you for some reason.

But she doesn't get the chance as orange hair flashes into your sight and kneels down with a bright smile.

"Ohh, that looks like it hurt."

Orange eyes roaming over you, checking for injuries as she lays a hand on your shoulder.

You're not injured of course. Maybe a tiny bit bruised from banging your knee into the ground to slow your fall as your foot was taken out from under you, but nothing that your Halo can't heal.

"Hmm, not too bad. Toughie aren't ya?! Hehe, come on, why don't I take you to the nurses office? Ms Melina can give you a better look."

And then you watch as Aya's smile shifts ever so slightly. Eyes looking towards the crowd as she tilts her a fraction.

"And what exactly are all of you looking at eh? Gosh, you're all the idiots here if you're just gonna let someone fall like this and chatter away. And you."

She turns to face the girl that tripped you, eyes narrowed even as the girl scoffs, green eyes looking with disbelief, surprise… Maybe even a hint of envy?

…nope. Don't read into it.

"I may not be as mean as Hichi… but you should watch where you're going next time. Capiche?"

There's just the tiniest hint of blood-lust behind that, a slight shifting forward from Aya.

The girl pales, nodding quickly before rushing off without even apologizing and when Aya turns to you, you get a feeling you shouldn't say you're fine and just scurry off yourself…

And that's how you end up sitting on a medical bed while Aya pokes your knee with a cotton pad.

You don't know why she's doing that, considering how you don't actually have anything more than a small scrape.

But eh, she seems happy to do it, so you can't really intervene.

Instead, you reach into your pocket, pulling out your pad and scribbling out some thanks to her… orangette?

That's not a word, but you're making it one today!

"Haha, ah this is nothing, can't be a good person if you're just gonna watch someone fall like that you know. Sorry I couldn't catch you! Uh, too many people in the way and stuff you know?"

You give her a smile and a shrug, and then grace her kneeling form with a head pat as you tell her that it's fine. And then add in some more thanks for getting you out of that situation with Mrs Balamore.

Though that has her tilt her head, and look up from your knee. Bright orange eyes meeting your glowing purple ones in a look of confusion.

"Eh? I helped you get out of something?"

You blink, and stare at the genuine look of confusion in her face… was it actually convenient timing afterall?

Definitely odd if that's really it…. Fate doesn't tend to help you, or at least it hasn't recently…. Maybe things are actually loo-

Nope. Stop… don't jinx it yet.

Not yet.

You shake your head slightly, pushing the thoughts out, and instead scribbling down that she helped when Mrs Balamore was about to take your tablet away.

There's a small gasp, a slight tilt of her head again and a hum from her. All bubbly and cheery as you'd expect from Argent's usual personality.

"That's… odd… She should have been informed about your uh… disability? Mutism? I'm just gonna go with Mutism… But yeah, she definitely should've been told about it…"

She hums a bit, tapping a finger against your knee as her eyes glaze over just a bit. Having a conversation with her Fae maybe?

But she nods after a second or two. And then nods a second time.

"Yeah… leave it with me, I'll have a chat with some other students and some of the teachers. Being student council has its perks~ No way you're the only one she's done that too. Hell, we've got cameras in the classrooms, and I know the AV club has to have at least someone who's tapped into them for some reason. Nerds, the lot of em, but they're pretty nice if you offer them some candy. Or attention."

She takes on a grin, smiling up at you. And then taps your knee once more, this time a more conscious choice as she stands.

"Okay! Well! I'll have a look at that for sure! Uh… Fillia… right?"

There's a cute head tilt added in, a slight glitter in her eyes… You can almost see the question marks floating behind her as she looks at you. And you seriously have to wonder….

How did she forget you already…? God it's weird having someone who doesn't know you… especially when the entire school seems to know you in some negative capacity.

You nod to Aya, and she smiles even brighter, pumping a fist and muttering about having gotten another friend with a look of genuine happiness.

And then, in the blink of an eye, you watch that smile flicker and die as she shivers.

A smile replaced by a look of drea-

And then she's smiling again. Eyes still just a bit wider than they should be for the happy expression she's trying to paste onto her face.

Paper ruffles, and you ask if she's okay. But she shakes her head, saying she's fine…. And then runs off out of the room before you can ask anything else.

Sure… Fine… Of course she is…

You shake your head at the voices that suggest going after her, Looking up to the white ceiling of the nurses room before pushing off and onto your feet.

You're not that close to her yet… probably not close enough for her to share her worries with…

Might be an idea to poke while you're in Purple mode… Nothing gets someone talking more than cooling down after a fight.

Well, if they're not unconscious, but, for now.

It's time to deal with more whispers and negativity in class.

You sigh… why is it always the cute girls that are the meanest?

This chapter kinda fought me tbh~ Don't know why, but maybe because its mostly dialogue... Well, it came out pretty well at least~ So no complaints to giiive~ Hope its an enjoyable read to you all~

Sadly, Aya's a bit tight lipped about herself to you for now. But hey. She' got a PEP with you being a new Friend. So thats always fun!
Hype to see how that plays along~

But aye, Some stuff to enjoy for you all~ So Cya all next week!

Do MG's have a perception filter that prevents people from connecting their transformed self to their regular selves in this setting? Otherwise i wonder how long it will take Aya to put together Fillia the smol mute girl who communicates with paper and Purple the smol mute MG who communicates with paper?

Yes and no~

The Fae mute the response of other peoples cores, including their Magi's. In turn making it seem as though an untransformed Magical is the same as any other person to any form of Magical detection. They also tend to subtly guide peoples thoughts away from the idea that their Magical happens to be a magical.

But... someone who chases an odd feeling might end up stumbling upon that secret for sure~ With the risks attached to knowing as well~

Afterall~ Who's the true enemy? Interlopers? Or Magicals~?

Oof. Filia why do you allow the bullying? That's terrible. Seriously you have enough on your plate girl without this crap to add on top of it.

Might be an idea to poke while you're in Purple mode… Nothing gets someone talking more than cooling down after a fight.

So we need to complete our duel with Argent? Is that the best way forward? I'm not exactly down with bringing Argent for another rift hunt while she's in this funk. Red seems to be wrestling with a lot of stuff right now.

It may be the way forward. It may not.

Aya doesn't really know Fillia that well.

But Argent knows Purple much more.

Maybe a fight is what you need. Maybe a conversation is what you need.

Most of your problem solving has been through force and 'violence' so far. So should make sense that Fia's first thought on that is using what's worked so far~
