I kind of want to go to the top. We learn a lot from dueling and later on in life dueling will be a skill we want to have. Plus I want to excel or try to excel at something. Also conflict builds character and will cause us to develop our magic more. Which will be good for our wand trait.

Also the first part of the chapter was the best part. With the way you show the goblins as a minority that is kept down. Which makes what we know in cannon make sense , even if it will cause a lot of people to die.

Self defence is an important skill, the duelling club is a good source of (a small amount of) social interaction.

But I'm not interested in winning. Not in this area, for sure.

Skill gains and social interactions aside, my other desire is to push Tracy, because I get the impression that she likes the idea of a rival. I wanna see if we can have it be a genially friendly rivalry

My point is, I have no interest in the third (Top) option, and of the the other two... well Duelling Club is fun. Put some effort into it... and not just because the "Child's Play" choice leads to the risk of not being as skilled as one could be for when shit goes down. I don't think I'll be convinced otherwise, but I'd be interested in hearing the reasoning that people hold regarding the choices :)

My takeaway from Tabula Rasa's Binns: "He'll drone on about the what. To get him to teach, ask[1] him about the why."

[1] Hard to do when you're asleep, 'cuz Binns ;)

@Tabula Rasa How many turns until Christmas holidays start?

I personally want to go to the top, but I feel like it would be going against our interactions with the Grey Lady. We told her that we didn't want power, and she shared something secret with us in that understanding. Turning around and striving to become the Dueling Club Champion seems like a betrayal of that trust.

Wanting to win and be the best in a useful sport is hardly the same as being power-hungry. Flitwick isn't and I certainly wouln't count it as something as dramatic as a betrayel.

What's more if you take away the drive to win from a competition it is rarely as interesting as it could be.

I suppose that from my point of view is that I'm just not interested in this as a competition - I'm in it for the skills, the interactions and the combat linked perks if we get lucky ;).

For me, Duelling Club is a Jacob-centred activity[1], whereas competition is implicitly centred about sorting a hierarchy relating to others. Which... meh.

[1] Well, now I want to be skilled at duelling because being a friendly rival sounds fun, but that's social focused motivation, not competition focused motivation.

I get where you are coming from but I see it differently. I see it as us shooting for the top so we learn more. Having a rival (that Jacob possible has a crush on) that will push us to being better will advance our magic quicker. Competition builds strength by pushing the limits.

Necessity is the Mother of Invention and War is the Father. Steel sharpens steel. Insert other quotes here.

We improved a lot because of the rivalry and I wouldn't mind studying and maybe analyzing more advanced spells that can come from Dueling older students.

Personally I'm happy with 2 or 3, I think one is the wrong way to go. Also +20 to our training rolls in Charms, DADA and Transfiguration now means we're basically almost back to auto successes for training in the next tier of those skills when the DCs stop being automatic.

Also of note we gained a third of the xp needed for the next level so I'm going to suggest continuing stat training for intellect and at least one point of training into constitution.

I like the second option, I like Jacob's dilletante side and would like to keep dabbling, fully committing seems a bit out of character to me.

[X] "This is the Road to the Top" – Tracey's goal seems to be clear. She wants to rise in ranks, however long it takes her. Her fierceness inspires you as well; this is something you can do. You will aim to win the dueling tournament at the end of this year, however farfetched that goal is. Because this feels like something that could be a lot of fun.

While we can be interested in riddles and ghosts its a nice change of pace to be good as an athlete and a combatant. As for this being a betrayal of the grey lady's trust I don't see it that way. The last line of the vote states that this is something that we could find to be a lot of fun, not for power. When it comes down to it I think that when Jacob finds something he likes, he will commit to it.

Agreed, the second one seems like it would be the most interesting, the first one i dont like because it would mean a passing passion, even though we are going to keep investing on it, and i dont think we should aim for the top, but rather we should keep on what we are doing, and see where it leads us.

Just realized lapifors now has a deep understanding, wonder if that means if our other spells that don't have any indication about any level understanding are just hidden and we just have to work on them to unlock further understanding.

also I wonder how casting spells without any(or barely any) wand movement and/or incantation(nonverbal) will be applied here, maybe it would be the next level after mastering a spell?

[ ] "You guide the way."- You like dueling, clearly, but you don't have any aspiration to it. While trying your very best may be a bit much, you will invest some brain matter into developing your skills to further improve. But this is not an overly important matter to you in the end.

I think this make the more sense to our character. Dueling is important because you may find trouble while exploring, but the true goal is to find mysteries and secrets, not win against strong oponents.

I want us to try to win the tournament. We have almost zero chance compared to the senior years, but it would certainly be fun.

If we are trying to best senior years, then surely we would atleast be the best in our year?

While she defended herself expertly against your spell, coming from the front, she didn't react to the chair, flying at her from behind. It hit her in the back, making her cry out in pain.
As a thought, I think I've discovered part of Jacob's usually flaws as hinted at by our QM. His casual disrespect to furniture, specifically chairs, for utterly brutal takedowns. We got stop this man before it's too late! Jacob might harm the benches in the Dining Hall, or the Vanishing Cab- actually that one is fine to destroy :thonk: - or how about the Sorting Hat's beloved Stool.

Your eyes roamed over the class, the students and then Melinda, who was slowly getting back on her feet.
It's also apparent it takes Jacob some time to see people, but honestly not the worst flaw. HP crowds aren't Marvel-tier, but they can get petty.

I think option 2 is an in character option that I would prefer. Option 3 on the other hand seems like an out of character option which appeals to the min-maxer inside of us. I think their relationship is super cute.

Moratorium is still in effect.

Definitely not taking the first action, leaning towards the third.

I don't think that trying to win is out of character for Jacob, he did after all feel the same way about winning duel as if he solved good riddle. And I want to see more Tracey.

All of the options presented to us are IC so it seems incredibly silly to say some are OOC. Some are more likely than others but all of them are a possibility given Jacobs personality.

I'm leaning more towards three than two now that I think about it.

It would require us to push on intelligence and creativity and to go gung ho on training charms, dada and potentially transfiguration but it seems like it's possible to get good enough to beat people significantly older.

Edit: Assuming I were to make a path to getting two skills (DADA + Charms) to 12 ASAP, here's how I'd do it. Obviously this is purely for rushing, I wouldn't really suggest this unless we want to go all out to win the tournament.

Dec: 8 Personal actions.
2x Intelligence (max 6 int)
2x Creativity (Max 5 cre)
3x DADA (Hits A-)
1x Spell learning

Jan: 8 actions (Obviously depends on the results of the first plan)
1x Constitution (3)
1x Empathy (3)
1x Int (Potentially 7)
1x Creativity (potentially 6)
3x DADA (E-) (Skill 11)
1x Spell learning

Reasonable chance of a level up at this point. Point into Int and Creativity assuming they're not gate kept by CON/EMP. The next turn throw in a point towards DADA for skill 12 and go ham on spell learning. Our roll bonus for DADA spells would be D100+35 and at that point we could also slam a bunch of skill upwards very rapidly. In future turns we're basically at the point where every two spell learning attempts in DADA spells is equivalent to 3 spell learning attempts from before so quasi free spell learning action every turn going forward for that investment.

Good candidates for crashing up skill learning would be, Potions, transfiguration, charms and Alchemy. Throw in a couple of training actions for Empathy and Constitition to try and get them to 5 so they aren't holding int and creativity back from hitting 10 via level ups.

That said I'm not sure I'd go all in like this as it might make those turns a little less fun. Still seems the kind of route we could feasibly pull off and if we do want to win the tournament that's part of how I'd go about it. Might make a early detour for the blue wideeye potion as 1 action extra month will pay off as well.

Who do you want Jacob to be? Someone who wanders and tastes the different flavours and textures of life, or someone who defines himself via comparison to other people?

This choice is not in anyway defining in any 'total' sense, but it is a step in a direction. What person are you aiming for Jacob to be in terms of how he approaches life?
