[X] Wands up – It seems as if for the first time in your life there is someone that sees you as their rival in something other than academic prowess. Tracey Davis is working hard to keep up with your dueling progress, you can tell. Go and talk to her.

I do have a question about mechanics though. Are skill levels also year specific? i.e a 5th year with an A+ skill level in transfiguration will know more spells in this area and also be more skilled in this area than a 4th year with an A+ skill level in transfiguration.

No, an Albus Dumbledore is also judged by the same rating as you are right now. They won't change in scope. A D in a subject does not mean you will get a D grade in that subject at the end of the year.

Instead it is a grade compared to what is possible in total.

Being an introvert doesnt mean not being capable of talking to people.
And I called it a 13 year old mentality because he's 13 years old.

By that logic, his mentality would be the same no matter what choice we made because he would still be 13 thus the mentality of a 13 year-old.

Putting that fallacy aside, I would argue that Jacob is an old man in a kid's body; afterall, he grew up surrounded by elderly wizards. There was not a single child for him to play or interact with growing up which caused him to be more introspective, thoughtful, and perceptive. His first time meeting kids his age were loud, noisy 11 year-olds, and he naturally shied away from them.

A slytherin rival is so much more interesting than Flitwick, he's our own head of house, we can talk to him anytime.

[X] Hello Professor – Stay for another few minutes and try to talk to Professor Flitwick. You have not had the chance to talk to your Head of House since both of you had been thrown against his office walls like ragdolls.

There were two more duels after yours, in which you silently sat in your chair – as far away from the blonde Slytherin girl as was physically possible – observing the battles attentively and writing down notes. The casting of the two second years who fought after you were sloppy, and they seemed to have an even smaller arsenal of spells than you had access to. The fight between the sixth- and seventh-year student afterwards though… well, let it be said that right now there was no possibility for you to win the tourney that was planned for the end of the year.

You stayed around with those last two students and Cedric Diggory to help clean up the room after the club meet, fixing the damage the duels had caused as you tried yourself on the new repair spell that you were trying to learn to stay ahead of the curriculum for a bit longer. The other two upper-years left soon after.

In the end it was only you waiting near the entrance for Diggory to finish his short conversation with the Professor in private.

You weren't trying to listen in on what they were talking about, but it was hard to overhear the words that were spoken loud enough to carry over to your place next to the door.

"… library…" you heard Professor Flitwick say. "The pass…" and "…restricted…" you heard Diggory say. When you saw the Professor nod and Diggory smile in return, you knew what had happened, but you didn't address it when Diggory passed by you with a nod as he left the room a minute later.

You didn't return his greeting.

Instead you waited a little longer until Professor Flitwick had finally packed his belongings into his tiny bag, which fitted way too many things inside for its small size before he stepped out of the room. This time there was no smile on his face like you had usually seen when he addressed you.

"I am glad that you joined the Dueling Club, Mr. Basques", the Professor said as you followed him into the corridor. Curfew had almost arrived, but you didn't see the need to hasten your steps when you were accompanied by the head of your house.

"It is interesting to see a more violent side of magic", you said, thankful for the politeness of the part-goblin. He was not going to address the Hippogriff in the room if you didn't want to. A respect clearly given because he knew that you had seen the same memories of Sally-Anne as he had when he had been unconscious.

Was he simpy seeing a traumatized child in you or was it something more?

"Ah", the Professor said, looking up to you while keeping his slow pace down the corridor. "It wouldn't do me any good to try to talk you into seeing the art in the violence now, would it?"

The art in the violence?

You thought back to Tracey's fierce eyes when she stood across from you, remembered how fluent the casting of some of the upper years was and imagined Cedric Diggory's upper body casually duck under a violet spell as if it was insulting to him how slow the spell had been moving against him.

"Yes, I can see the beautiful aspect of it, too", you said. "But that is only for tournament dueling, isn't it?" you asked. "We are under constant observation and protection and considering the variety of vials and potions that you carry with you, even that is not enough to keep all of the violence out of the art."

"Yes, Mr. Basques, sharp-eyed as always. Two points to Ravenclaw", he said, addressing a point system that had not ever caught your interest. "There is not only art to it, but it is important to know to defend yourself. Even if you are young, the world can be a violent one", he said, before taking a moment to take his glasses of and clean them with a piece of cloth that he had retrieved from somewhere.

For a moment the ever so cheery Professor looked old and tired. You had seen traces of those feelings throughout the week in different faces of the Hogwarts staff. It was what had fueled your decision to talk to Flitwick in the end. There was a debt that you needed to pay off. Some of teachers seemed to be carrying their burden in silence, not willing to let it reach the students.

"I think I know that, Professor", you said, a sad smile making its way into your face as you thought back to the small girl that had been afraid and all alone.

"I…" you tried but had to stop as the tiny Professor looked up at you again. "I am sorry about the way that I handled the situation", you said. "I had an inkling as to what could happen, but I thought it was the best possible solution. I wasn't-…"

A hand touched your arm as Professor Flitwick came to a halt next to you.

"This was not your battle to fight, Mr. Basques", he said, looking up at you with calm support in his voice. "You have helped a student that we were not able to. I am very proud of having you as a student of my house, Mr. Basques."

You broke the eye contact, nodding simply as you looked up to see a familiar ghost fly by and disappear into a wall at the end of the corridor.

"That's the problem", you said, watching the no empty corridor in front of you. "I am not sure if I have helped here or if she has helped me see things differently, Professor."

Dreams of old, Stage I

Of the five Ravenclaw boys third years it had been mostly you to arrive in the bedroom and go to sleep first for two consecutive years. It was another change away from your old routine that you noticed when you closed the door as silently as you possibly could behind you.

You passed Stephen's tranquil sleep to see Terry's half open eyes in the next bed. He closed them again when he saw that it was you and had fallen back into his dreams by the time his head touched the pillow. In the bed besides him Michael was snoring like he always did and passing by the fourth bed you heard Anthony talking to himself again.

"No," he mumbled in deep slumber. "I want… dragon."

You let your shoes down next to your bed that you had carried inside to make as few noises as possible. It was almost four in the morning and while it was dangerously difficult to evade Mrs. Norris and Filch, it was simply the best time to see if there were some hidden floors and places that reacted differently to specific timeframes.

After swiftly changing yourself into your pajamas, you took the time to close the curtains around your bed as you sat down, before taking the thick tomb out of the hidden place between your bed and the wall to its side.

"Lumos", you whispered, letting a faint light come out of your wand as you hoped that the thin curtain was enough as to not bother your roommates with the influx of sudden brightness.

Your eyes roamed over the plain leather case of the old book that your parents had send you. Nothing that you had tried on it had worked on the book. It was still holding on to its secrets. Opening the book up to the first page you saw the familiar blankness that adorned any following page in it.

You had tried solving the puzzle like you had attacked most riddles in Hogwarts, but you had not yet succeeded to get anything out of it. One thing you hadn't tried yet, though. In the letter addressing this book your father had spoken about a link to memory related magic and while you had no idea how those worked, you knew how to understand the metaphor.

A book was there to transfer knowledge onto its readers. The words were the medium most people chose, because it was the simplest of them all… but what if one wanted to involve magic to replace that medium?

The tip of your wand touched the first page of the book.

"Show me your secrets", you whispered as you raised your wand to touch your temple with the tip.

Your head fell into the pillow behind you as you fell into unconsciousness again.

The book turned a page, guided by no one but itself.

The wind caressed its fur, whirling around and spinning ever so high over the clearing to reach you and fly past your face to let a streak of brown hair fall into your face. You payed it no mind. The wind was still favoring you and your ancestors, impeding your smell from carrying down of your hiding spot up in the tree and across the forest glade to the majestic wolf.

Its white fur was moving in synchrony with the air, being swayed from one side to the other as the king of this forest kept attentive watch over his offspring. While none of the mothers you had seen follow his path had been blessed by his specific nature, all of his children were. They were white as the snow that came when days were shorter, and nights were darker.

Even from so far out you could smell the magic that was radiating out of the beast, calling you out and challenging your skills.

Your hands stayed calm when you stretched the bowstring all the way back to your ear and then even past that. The magic inside you was accumulating, focusing on the one single goal you had in mind. It was just an easy and small movement to let go of the string and let the arrow fly.

It had been difficult to track the route the king of this forest would follow when he was marching for food. It had been a pain to wait high up in the tree without moving for a day and a half. It had been exhausting to use your magic to keep you out of his sensitive tracking abilities. Those things had demanded every single skill you possessed. That had been difficult.

Letting go of the bowstring was not hard at all. It was the easiest thing that you had ever done.

Time almost froze to a standstill as you followed the arrow fly through the air. The majestic white wolf, first of his specimen had already been a king the day he arrived in this world. He had been the first of his kind to grasp for magic and it had developed an intelligence that no other of his species could ever match.

When the wolf turned his head to look into your direction, you knew that he wasn't looking at the arrow that had almost reached him. He didn't need to, because he had lived his life with the knowledge of today being the last for him to roam the forests.

The arrow was breaching the wolfs white fur when his magic finally reached you, penetrating your mind and pushing your defenses away as easy as it would have been for you to swat away a fly. And just for a moment – a moment that could have been a thousand lunar cycles long – his eyes were embedded deep in your mind, showing you one single thing.

You saw a forest in which his now young offspring had grown to be the dominating species. A forest that was reigned by his blood and his line. They were strong, healthy and were able to mate. It was a future that showed that he had done his duty.

And then your arrow penetrated the heart of the first white king of the forest.

By the time you had skinned all of him that you could take with you and buried the rest, only one white cub was still sitting near the place that her father had died. One white cub, looking up at the murderer of her father in silent defiance.

You shouldered the spoils of your hunt and grabbed the young cub that carried the majestic characteristics of its father. Locking eyes with it you tried to emulate the connection his father had built with you, but there was no intimate exchange of thoughts, instead you were simply looking at a pair of grey eyes that were watching you intently.

"We are two women without a father", you told the white ball of fur. "Follow me and avenge your father or be my companion."

And with that you let the young wolf down on the ground, still locking eyes with her.

"My name is Basques", you said. "And you are…", you thought intensely about a fitting name for a future queen.

"You are Lobo", the wolf. Because there was no greater name than to name her after the species that she had evolved out of.

Lobo was trailing behind you, always keeping a focus on the things that were moving in the area. Her mind magic had evolved leaps and bounds, gifting you with abilities that you would have never thought possible in the past.

The smell of water and salt reached your nose through the mind link between you and your companion. She let you taste what felt like raw fish and let you see her roam the sandy beaches. You could almost see the waves of the sea moving gentle against the beach and the palms bending lightly in the wind.

"No, Lobo", you simply said. "The sea is too far away, we are almost home now."

Before your words had been spoken you had been able to feel disappointment through your shared link. The white wolf ran past you, instead of waiting for you and was the first to reach the outer bounds of the small town that your grandfather had built.

Your lands bordered onto the great ocean. Atlantis thalassa the sea beyond human land. You remembered the legends your mother had told you as a child; of a land that was richer and more powerful than anything had ever been, of a people who contested with the gods. The sea was known to surround all land, but was named after a country far away in the south.

There were people sailing into the north and some of them returned. There was nothing of worth there. The land was cold, and its people were rumored to meddle in death magics. No one wanted to be part of that crime against the gods.

The brave that sailed into the west were never to return again, enviously taking their knowledge into their graves as to what awaited the fool who tried to defy their destiny and search for lands that were without contesting.

Those that went south were driven by legends of old. They wanted to find the greatest lands and feast with Atlas children. You could almost imagine yourself stepping through the Great Halls of a country with buildings as unfathomably large that it could house people as big and strong as titans.

You turned your head to greet the farmers as you passed by the first houses and acres of land. People stopped their work to great you and stood up to bow their heads to you. These villagers at the outer borders of your town were the newest to join your family.

Even after the death of your father, your brothers had been able to make the surrounding lands ever more secure and offer the lands to nomads that arrived as they had been promised prosperous lands in the northwestern corner of the known world. Now, there were almost twenty thousand people living in a piece of land that had been uncultivated before your grandfather had set foot here and raised his spear against nature.

Most of those twenty thousand were women and children, only a handful of them showed some magical talent in any form, something that had been extremely hard to determine in time just a few years ago but was now as easy as getting the image of a wooden bow through your shared mental link with your companion.

You fastened your steps up and reached the piece of land that Lobo had found interesting. The land was the standard size that your brothers would give out to knew people. It was larger than what a family of ten would need to survive and it made it possible for your town to grow more prosperous with every new villager that joined your family.

You and your siblings had been securing the surrounding lands in a fast pace since you had been old enough to do so, which gave them quite broad borders to fill with people.

On the property of interest, you could see a man work the field. He didn't look up to see you and your wolf standing at the border of his lands. You crossed into his property, Lobo following close behind you as she always did when there were other humans around.

A young woman, maybe only a few years older than you, stood in the cool shadows by the house, caressing a baby in her arms as she was singing a wonderful, soothing melody for him to keep him calm. When your eyes found the baby in her arms again the picture of a wooden bow was sent to your mind.

The bow that was strapped onto your back was what you needed to focus your magic; it was also what the white furred beast behind you used to convey that someone or something was of magical nature.

You had crossed half of his land, when the man finally looked up from his work and saw you. It took him a few seconds for his face to go from surprise, to anger and then to a mixture of excitement and fear as he saw you come closer.

It wasn't difficult piecing together who you were; a woman with long and brown hair, tall and in a well-crafted white uniform that would not have been able to be produced without the use of magic, a wooden bow on her back and a white wolf by her side.

"Lady Basques", he said, bowing down dramatically. While it was one thing to see you simply pass by, if you chose to enter someone's land, they would feel the need to show their gratitude to your family. You could understand that, and you had learned to appreciate it.

"Please stand up", you said as you waited for him to straighten himself, before bowing down your head slightly in return. "I am trespassing on your property and I want you to excuse my audacity to do that."

His eyes widened in surprise at your words, but you didn't keep your attention on him. Instead you watched as his wife hastily moved from her place, rushing over to the field you were standing on to bow down herself. Her baby was still in her arms and began crying, startled by the sudden movements.

"I am terribly sorry, Lady Basques", she said apologetic as she tried to sooth her baby again – it was most certainly a boy… you thought. You weren't sure yet.

"I was like that, too, when someone tried to rob me of my well-deserved sleep", you said, a smile on your face. You felt something touch your leg as you saw Lobo move past you and heading straight for the woman in front of you.

The woman's eyes caught the movement as well as her face froze in shock and she tried to shield her son with her body instinctively. Next to her you could see her husband grab the plough that he had used to work the land, raising it slightly to-…

"Please don't", you said, trying to resolve the situation. "She will not do you or yours any harm. There is just something she needs to see, I give you my word."

The tension didn't leave the situation even as Lobo halted her movements, still a few feet away from the woman. Your wolf held her head high, looking straight at the boy in the woman's arm. As soon as the boy looked down and his eyes met that of the wolf, he stopped crying, only to start laughing after a few seconds of silence.

"Congratulations", you said with a smile on your face. "Your son has magical talent."

"This is what happens when you hear that there is someone out there with enough land as to simply hand over property to anyone that comes knocking", Isaac said, letting his hatchet fall onto the table. There was still the blood on it that he had shed tonight.

Isaac was tall like all of you were and he was brown-haired like everyone in your family had been. Usually you would see nothing but ease and joviality on his face, today the youngest of your older brothers had nothing but hate left in his eyes.

"Everyone outside our lands is turning into an enemy. We have to change our strategy", Isaac said. Anger filled his voice were there had hardly ever been comparable emotions. Times were more difficult now than they had been in your childhood.

"It is the way our father has shown us", your oldest brother said, taking time to close the curtains of the windows before addressing the rest of you. "We always knew that a point would come in which we would have to defend ourselves", he said as he turned around to you again. "Not against nature, but humanity."

Antes eyes were hard and unsettling – when had they gotten so alike your fathers? His face was one sculptured out of marvel, unmoving and unrelenting. Not for the first time since the death of father you thanked the gods that you had been the youngest one, not meant to carry his burden.

"They have been gathering men outside of our reach for a month now. They think of themselves as powerful and superior to us, but they will soon come to feel remorse about their choices."

To lead had changed Antes, it had made him stronger, but it had also taken away so much that had made him special before… the burden of carrying the old spear of your grandfather was one that forced his back to straighten and his eyes to never waver.

"I will gather the men and head out for an attack", Valentino said, grabbing for the sword on his side. He was the second oldest, not the smartest, nor the most ambitious, but he was by far the bravest of you. Were duty had made Antes hard, Valentino had been chasing after dragons from the moment he had been able to walk.

"I will join you", you finally said, taking the chance to participate in the conversation.

"No," Antes simply answered. "You will not."

Your eyes locked in defiance with those of your oldest brother. The eyes of your leader and your lord.

"Let's go, Valentino", you simply said, ignoring his words. To your right you heard your second oldest brother laugh as he grabbed his coat and followed you out of the family compound.

It was late in the morning when you opened your eyes again. The curtains around your bed were still closed shut and light was coming in through the thin fabric, trying to wake you for the Saturday you had ahead of you.

Instead of making your way to the bathroom and jumping under the shower, your eyes were staring at the ceiling though.

You still smelled the air of the ocean, felt the connection to your wolf companion and the irritation directed at your oldest brother who had wanted to simply dismiss you. You felt the passion that the woman had felt for hunting and the responsibility over her people that had guided her every action.

"What was that?" you asked yourself as you raised your hands to look at them. You almost expected the long and slender fingers that you had held the wooden bow with, but instead you saw your own hands, Jacob's hands.

Basques.

That had been her name. There had been no surname, not even the idea of something as a surname. No, she had been Basques, daughter of… What was her fathers name? You didn't remember. As if you had seen only glimpses of her life that she had chosen to share with you.

… something she had chosen to share with you.

You turned around to the book that sat on the bed next to you, closed shut and peaceful as if it was not the most curious thing that you had ever possessed. Was this what your father had meant? Learning about your ancestors? About a woman that your family had been named after?

You are stepping into footprints larger than you would have expected. There is still much that the book wants to tell you, much that it wants to teach you. But right now, there were new memories that you had to process. What do you remember?
