That was not a mistake. 'Christmas' is not accompanied with gifts in Spain. Instead there is a day called Epiphany which is celebrated on 6th January. In Spanish, Epiphany is called 'Fiesta de Los tres Reyes Mages': in English this means 'The festival of the three Magic Kings'. Epiphany celebrates when the Kings or Wise men brought gifts to the baby Jesus and this is also when the children get their presents.
This year had Jacob's 'grandmother' dying, which made the rest of the festivity kind of not important anymore. It wasn't mentioned directly in the text, because you only get to see Jacob's thought process and he had many other things in mind instead.
As a Spanish myself I have to correct you, we have had gifts on Christmas day from the late 80s when Papa Noel (Santa Claus) comes home, and the usual thing is to divide the gifts and we give some on Christmas and the other half in Epiphany...
To be fair this is both a consequence of many businesses wanting to increase their business in Christmas and for practical purposes because that way the childeen get their presents at the beginning of Christmas and they have far more time to play with them...

I'd also assume that for the most part gifts would already have been bought/created before Perenelle died, particularly given the specialness of Jacob to his parents so it would be all the more important for them to treasure what time they do have..

In the story we are in the year '94. As you're saying, it's a recent development. Wizards don't catch up to trends as fast, if ever.
I was raised in spain, so I'm pretty confident with my interpretation of what a spanish wizardry society might look like, that consists of mostly non-spanish elderly.

I won't move on this matter. I wouldn't consider myself a QM that doesn't give the playerbase a lot of leeway and shiny things. But there are rules of consistency that I am setting for this to be the most cohesive and fun story it can possibly be.
From a meta-perspective the holidays gave you free shoes. So, I'm not sure what you are trying to argue for.
I am arguing for another update I need my hit of the dark arts. I kid and take your time. But I got to say I like this Harry Potter quest and how it is going.

Like the chibi Tom Riddle-mort I never knew I wanted!
I hope we can manage to squeeze in a Dark Forest outing after learning the Patronus. Feels like a great place to further test weather the dark book has anything applicable to the 'modern' magical fauna.
I would think the centaurs fits nicely as some type of fae if not the unicorns.
Might even be able to bring Tracey along to practice applied dueling against any hungry Acramentula Jacob might stumble upon.

Just another thing @Tabula Rasa when interacting with our parents these motivation rolls will only happen when we ask for money or other things that would cost Jacob´s a significantly (like a broom, some ingredients for a potion,...) or if we ask our mother something like "can you send me a few recipes for potion that could interent the students" would also have motivation rolls?

Everything that falls out of the established character will have a motivation roll. It depends on the reasoning and the action itself.
If you chose to kill the minister without any reasoning behind it, it will have a higher one, than say that you want to kill him, because you want to break into the Department of Mystery. I don't want to forbid things, that's why I'll rarely give a hard no to choices, but I don't want to break immersion by allowing you everything without limits.
Interesting that will make help stop us from meta gaming. Because really I do not want to be one of the champions for the triwizard tournament. I would rather just duel the other students to establish dominance.

Ok, so in completely hypotethical case... Let´s say that we vote for entereing the triwizard tournament, this motivation DC would be much higher if we wanted to enter because of the fame or the the money, than if we wanted to prove that we can get past Dumbledore´s age line, no?

Something that saddens me is when I was a paramedic in real life I would see a elderly person die and than their spouse would die in 6 months. I fully expect grandpa Nicholas to die by the summer break. It is going to be sad and another character vote when it happens.

That is why I am going to vote to come back home in Easter/Spring holidays next month... I would like to spend as much time as possible with Grampa Nicholas before he dies.

Hm, the spring holidays are not nearly so relaxed as the winter holidays, considering the amount of work piled upon the students for that time period. It is less a holiday and more a time to perform extra revision.

To be fair, after this turn we would only have to finish one or two potions to get everything that we would need for our exams, and we are WAAAY beyond Outstanding for our year in a good number of subjects... So I would not worry too much about it.
Just a couple of things to get a better undertanding of Jacob @Tabula Rasa
If we sent cards with these petition to home:
"Dad, I will have a duelind Tournament at the end of the year, Can you suggest me some more advanced dueling spells to look into?"
"Mum, I am planning to start selling potions (more specifiaclly Blue Wideye potion) to my classmates, could you send me some more potion formulas that my classmates would be interested on"
"Grampa Nicholas, I am trying to study Alchemy on my own in Howgwatrs, but unfortunately all the books on alchemy are on the resticted section, would you be so kind to send me some reference
Would they be IC for Jabob and not needing a motivation roll, or if they needed that roll, the DC would be high, medium or low?
[] With Solitude comes Peace (Takes 2 Actions) – You find yourself surrounded by eyes andears. Someone is waiting behind each and every corner of the castle. The night allows you freedom to roam around but it comes with dangers. It has been too long a time in which you couldn't be by yourself and simply look up at the clouds. Rest a bit, the year is still long.
[] A Dark Book (2 Normal Actions) – You have obtained rare knowledge in the form of a book. Half written on a common old schoolbook and half written on human skin, the writings cover the pages in shit and blood. You hid the book in the corridor leading out of the castle, where no one should stumble over it by accident. Study the book. You will need a bit of time to decipher the writings, but you should be able to decipher much of the foreign language with the English parts. (Gives Ability: Pact Making I; Skill Progress: Dark Arts +2 & Ancient Runes +1)
[] Runes Club Research (Multiple Actions on this count as multiple rolls stacking) – Spend time with the Members of the Runes Club looking for hidden runes and glyphs in the castle walls (Will also count as a training roll towards Ancient Runes). x2
[] Write a Letter: Mom and Dad - Tell them about what you've experienced, and if they have any knowledge. Mention your plan to start a potion business to your mom and how valuable it'd be for both yourself and those you'd be selling too, and ask for any tips and money for the initial potion batch.
[]x7 personal actions.
[] Train DADA x1
[] Potion learning x6 (Wideye Potion, Blue Wideye potion, Shrinking Solution, Antidote to Uncommon Poisons)

"Transfiguration is some of the most complex and dangerous magic you will learn at Hogwarts. As I said in your very first class, I now do again; anyone messing around in my class will leave and not come back."
The tall and sprightly woman's eyes scanned the room with a stern look on her face. Even if she was one of the teachers you respected the most, you still felt uneasy when her eyes stopped at your frame for a moment. "You have been warned, because today we will be one step closer that danger," she then added.
Professor McGonagall relaxed, once she realized that both Ravenclaw and Gryffindor students alike had taken her warning seriously. Just a few moments later she seemed like a different person entirely. A joyous smile found its way back to her face, before she flicked her wand casually. Instantly, the single sheet of parchment that you had been ordered to pull out in front of you, swelled in size and transformed into small sculptures of dragons. When the transformation was done, it was only as large as your hand, but it was ridicously detailed in its features, almost looking alive to your very eye.
You looked around to see that each and every one of these stone dragons looked different to another. Some were seemingly frozen in movements, while others, like yours, were sleeping in peace. When you looked back at Professor McGonagall, there was a grin on your face matching her smile. This was so far beyond your level, that you did not even know how she did it. It was almost like casting a dozen different spells at the same time.
"Due to the applied, precise nature of Transfiguration magic there is a large potential for it to go disastrously wrong, even for experts. This is especially true if the practitioner isn't taking things seriously or trying to perform magic outside their proficiency." The old woman let her wand rest on the table behind her and leaned back against it, as she continued talking. A piece of chalk was moving on its own behind her, noting down the most important points.
While most of your classmates were trying to keep up with her words, furiously moving their feathers into and out of ink, your notebook stayed shut.
"If it is done improperly, the Transfigured object can become Half-Transfigured or permanently stuck in one state. Either case desirable if wanted, unwise to cause if not. Thus, it is important to understand the different states a Transfigured object can be in. And for that, we will now focus on the classifications. Who can tell me what the main branches of our subject are?"
Her eyes fell on you for a moment, because you were the only one looking up at her, not focused on writing along. You did not react to her non-verbal cue to speak up. Half a second later a different hand was up in the air. Professor McGonagall's eyes lingered on yours for a moment longer, before she turned to the Gryffindor girl instead.
"Yes, Miss Granger?"
"There are four, Ma'am. Transfiguration is divided into four branches. In these main four branches there are also sub-branches. The main branches, in ascending order of difficulty are Transformation, Untransfiguration, Vanishment, and Conjuration."
As always, the number one student in your year shot out so many words in so few seconds that you asked yourself if she was moving through time faster than the rest of you. It would maybe explain how she was able to keep up with seemingly everything, while even you had to let some subjects fall behind for a while to focus on other, more interesting subjects.
The Gryffindor girl had evolved into a bit of a spectacle for you; something so very different from you, that you didn't feel like you could be the same species. Was she simply interested in everything or was it just the hard work that was fun for her?
"That is correct, I am pleased to see that you are well ahead of our classes. Two points for Gryffindor."
Granger was beaming at this. Another thing you couldn't quite understand. Was it the points or the praise? Why did she care for that as much?
Hmm. Why didn't you care for it? That you had never asked yourself before.
"Ah, yes, Mr. Corner," the Professor said.
Your eyes found the dark haired Ravenclaw instantly, his hand raised into the air. When you heard your housemate speak up, you couldn't help but sigh. It was always a pain to be around him, listening to him was excruciating.
"Transfiguration is the class that deforms or alters the target in some way. While it is the first covered in the Hogwarts curriculum, it also pertains the most complex and dangerous forms of transfiguration," Michael said. It bothered you quite a bit that he was actually right with what he was saying. You had noted that he had improved quite a bit in classes over the last few months. Most of your Ravenclaw housemates had, even if you were not quite sure were that change in attitude had come from.
"Untransfiguration is the art of reversing a previous transfiguration, being therefore considered both a transfiguration and a counter-spell. Vanishment is the art of causing things to Vanish and Conjuration is the art of conjuring things. It is also considered to be very advanced magic, though some conjurations are considered simpler than others."
"Magnificent, Mr. Corner. Two points to Ravenclaw. As I see, I may be able to keep this part of the lesson shorter than usual," she said, while looking at the Ravenclaw that looked more than just a bit pleased with himself.
"One further note; Human Transfiguration is a sub-branch of Transfiguration and a form of transformation in which one transfigures human body parts or an entire human being into another form. This specific branch is more difficult than any other and is only taught at N.E.W.T.-level," the Professor said. "Be sure to not try these spells on fellow students, if you are not completely sure that you can actually pull it off. While I will be quite proud of any of you achieving such a feat, I would be heavily disappointed in seeing half transformed rabbits."
She didn't look at you, but you still felt a few heads turning for you; some more and some less obvious, but most of them with blueish robes on them. Good then that they only knew of what had happened to Goyle. That spell had been once you knew that you could actually perform the transformation itself. The first experimental casting had been much more dangerous in nature.
"We then shall move on to the next point of today's chapter, the Draconifors Spell. Who can …"
When the pairs of eyes fell back to follow McGonagall's instructions, you looked down to the small dragon in front of you. You instantly understood why the Professor had chosen to give you such detailed sculptures for your first lesson on this spell. Just looking at it, it already felt alive without casting any spell on it. There would be a very small gap that would be needed to be crossed with your magic to actually bring it to life.
You pulled a specific Notebook out of your bag and opened it. A few dozen pages were filled with spells you had researched and learned already. Once a spell was learned, a page fell into oblivion mostly – other times notes were added to it. You took your quill out and added one note to an idea for a spell creation you had; 'Try bringing objects to life with highly detailed statues first?'. It was the spell idea for recapturing the magic you had once casted accidentally on a clay dolphin. The idea was still bare bones and would need some work, but you thought it might be possible.
You skipped a few pages until you landed on a spell that you had learned not too long ago. It was the same one the Professor was explaining right in this moment. Here, you added a couple new comments and crossed the 'Done' part out.
Spell research added: Draconifors(Deep Understanding) - Transfiguration. The Draconifors Spell is a Transfiguration spell used to transform small objects into Dragons, which can then be controlled by the caster. While it will still not be independent from you and will need a lot of concentration to keep up, it is now possible to transform medium large objects into dragons. The dragons produced from this spell are much smaller and less powerful than true dragons, and their size depends on your skills and the object from which they are transfigured - i.e. a smaller object will produce a smaller dragon, and a larger object will produce a larger dragon. DC: 100.
When you looked up again, the class had fallen into silence. A small, red and gold dragon was flying small circles around Professor McGonagall's head, before returning to Longbottom's table and coming to rest as a stone sculpture again.
"Any further questions?" She asked, looking around the room. "No? We might as well start then. I don't expect you to perform this successfully until the end of the year, but you will need to invest some time into the spell for it to work completely."
The Professor was still speaking, when you looked down at your statue again.
"Draconifors," you said.
Where hers had been red and gold, the small dragon before you was of a blueish black. It was the first time that you had succeeded in influencing its colour. Having a statue that looked like the dragon you wanted to create, simplified the Transfiguration considerably enough for you to do that as well.
A second later the small dragon jumped out of your table and up into the air, flying left and circling above you, before going for the front of the room. Under your command, it started attacking the flying chalk, which evaded the small dragon quite proficiently.
"Mr. Basques, I am not surprised to see you having mastered the spell already," Professor McGonagall said, bringing your attention back to her. "You might want to wait for me to actually open the training session, but at least I see that you have been studying ahead. That was a perfect conjuration. You should try making it a tad larger from here on."
You nodded: "Yes, Ma'am."
"Five points to Ravenclaw."

There was a quidditch game … or something on Saturday. You were not sure, because you found yourself falling back into old habits, evading your class- and housemates for days. While it was too cold still to spend too much time outside, by having a spell to combat the cold, you were able to head out a few times, strolling north to look up at the distant mountains in peace or going down to Hogsmeade to buy some equipment you needed for painting something special.
→ - 3 Galleons, 4 Sickles
You had been raised to reflect on your own thoughts and actions. It was the single most important thing your parents had taught you; to understand the own mind. Rarely had you been chastised for doing something wrong, as there had never been clear rules to begin with. Instead your remembered them sitting down with you at times and bringing you to explain why it was that you had done something and how it had affected others.
This meant that it was quite obvious to you that something had changed, because the mindscape that had been familiar to you before, had changed drastically. So many things were affecting your mind that you had started to simply run away from it, blocking circular thought processes by jumping into new and interesting things. It had been the right thing to do probably, because you were now able to look at things from a distance. But it was time for some introspection.
The process of change had started earlier than you thought. You might want to place it somewhere after the start of the year. You had been much more active than ever before. While you had never ignored a riddle, those you had followed in the past had been of the fantastical kind; adventures others went through in novels, where you faced the wonders of their world through their eyes. Going from that to a more active part in the real world was a change that you would not want to miss again. The things you had been able to witness thanks to this had been beyond even your imagination.
But you needed to be conscious of it, reflect on the new traits that defined you now.
You had always been curious beyond any reasonability. That you knew. There was also a habit of getting distracted by new things, oftentimes detrimental to other things you had been focussing on. This had been one of the things that still plagued you, but that you were able to actively suppress, when it was necessary. Still, you knew that you were pushing your limits already. You were spending much more time on learning magic, spells and potions than was comfortable for you for several months now. It had been catching up to you and you were feeling a pressure on your mind that hadn't been there before.
Had it not been for the time spent deep inside a magical underground structure in unknown mountains, you would have likely hit your limit already. You may need to consider being more reasonable with how you invested your time, because even you could hit your limits. How you would snap once you overdid it, you did not know, but you felt the fatigue of too much active training and far less adventures than your brain longed for.
You sighed, moving a bit inside the dark broom closet you had hidden in. There was something you wanted to do in the Entrance Hall, which would only be possible at night. And so, you had hidden inside the broom closet a few minutes before curfew. By now, hours had passed. Standing up, you opened the door in front of you slowly and pushed your head out.
Looking right, you saw nothing move. You moved your head to the left, which also showed an empty hall. It was deep into the night, going from Sunday to Monday, which should be the most secure moment to do what you were going to do. Not even Filch would expect something to happen the night before a school week started.
"Wingardium Leviosa," you whispered. A large bag followed you on your way to the wall across the entrance to the Great Hall. The wall you were looking at was large and had been suspiciously empty of any decoration or paintings for a thousand years. While you had expected a hidden floor in the beginning, your investigations had shown you otherwise. It was simply an empty wall.
Tonight, this would change.
You took your equipment out and then proceeded to pull a ladder out that you had hidden to the right of the large set of stairs hours earlier. A few minutes later, you were already climbing up, using the ladder to access the higher parts of the wall as you laid the foundation for the largest painting you had ever done.
Painting had always been a relaxing form of passing time for you. Your hand moved on its own, while your mind spaced out again.
There had been more changes to your personality. Second year Jacob had been by far the most detached student of his year. It would surprise you, if you had exchanged more than ten sentences with any student for an entire school year. The only reason why you had never been bullied was because you had never been incapable. While you had never put much more work into your studies than your Ravenclaw peers, you had always been comfortably competent in your skills. An aloof but capable wizard was not quite the perfect material for entertainment or easy victimization. Why would you keep insulting someone, who simply didn't care?
This first half of your third year had seen drastically changes to that persona. While you would still not categorize any of the people you talked to as friends, there were a few acquaintances now that had not been there before. You found yourself talking to your Ravenclaw peers at times or exchanging nods with people you knew from duelling or H.A.R.C. You had found a passion in duelling that you had never felt for something similar.
And then there were those traits that had shown themselves in moments of peril. While you felt fear, it did not define your actions. You had shown yourself time and time again how clear your thoughts were in situations that were life threatening … and you found yourself enjoying those moments. It was a feeling that should have been alien to you, but wasn't. While you weren't looking for danger for dangers sake, your curiosity made you go into difficult circumstances time after time. You had grown through those experiences, more than anything else and thinking back of them, they had been some of the most memorable things you had done to date.
This was another change that had been unexpected, but that you wouldn't like to miss out of ever again. You were different than those around you. That, you had always known.
The wall in front of you started to change. In less than an hour, the entirety of it was covered in two layers of paint. Then figures and outlining started appearing. The foundation was set, when you started using the few spells you needed for such a painting process to accelerate your work.
You were deep in trance, when you heard something. There was the sound of movement behind you, but your eyes didn't find the source, once you turned around to it.
The Entrance Hall behind you was still dark, the only light was that of the few candles still burning this late, but your eyes had adapted to it. Still, you were not able to detect a source for the disturbance … and so, you turned around to your work eventually. Soon, your mind was back in its loop.
There was one last change that had affected you … even more than others.
You had learned of your creation. It was something that not even your parents knew, building the first barrier between them and you that had ever existed. The moment you had processed Perenelle's words, you had made up your mind about how to handle this thing. If it came down to your decision, your parents would never learn of it.
In no possible future would you let this knowledge darken their last years on earth or throw a shadow over their love for you and the Flamels. Perenelle had committed crimes against humanity, so dark and evil that it was unfathomable in its nature, but you would shoulder that knowledge on your own. Still … even after realizing what she had done, you were not able to feel any anger towards her. While your love for her had been clouded by a dark shadow, your respect had grown. She had become less of a grandmotherly figure and more of a story – of someone you could learn from.
You found yourself incapable of hating her, as you had been incapable of hating the creature you had found in the dungeon below Helga's Hall. The way Perenelle had done evil to reach of what she thought of as great, the creature – Girzum – had done what was necessary to stay alive in a world without mercy for the weak.
While you didn't find yourself wanting to pursue the Hufflepuff ideal of loyalty and friendship, you started to put more thoughts into the minds of those around you. There was certainly something that you could categorize as evil and bad. But in the end, you understood what motivated them and how hard it must be to do those things. Motivation was something that lay beyond all action. One just needed to understand that … and now that you did, your own actions became clear indicators of your thoughts.
You had not hesitated in torturing a thinking being to get it to tell you how it was trying to hurt you.
There might have been other ways of achieving the same results - ways that you may have prioritized if you had developed differently. In hindsight, you knew why you had done it, though. It had been clear to you that it would be the most effective solution in that specific situation and so you had done exactly what was needed.
You acted differently, because your motivations had changed. Your needs had grown stronger now, had sharpened with the development of your personality. Even now, while knowing that Girzum would try its best to stab you in the back, you felt yourself rather intrigued by the thought of it. It made sense for Girzum' to want to hurt you. It was the most effective possible way for him to be free again, not bound to any Pact and agreement. There were no morals in his thinking, because there was no room for that.
You would go into that and try to treat it is as a riddle; if you solved it in time to avert the danger, then you would learn many things that would have otherwise been hidden to you.
You climbed the ladder down to work on the lower levels of the huge painting.
In the end, it was clear that you were rapidly developing in mind and body. There were many aspects of your personality now, that hadn't been there before and you felt only wiser for it. And you were starting to grow taller than your peers, physically. It began to show that your parents were both rather tall, even at their age.
Your hand moved up and down, your wand directing bottles of paint closer to you as you moved over the ground, focussing on the last parts of the picture. At some point, you started casting the spells your mother had taught you after your first year. They had no utility outside of creating drawings and you were only getting proficient at them now that your magic was developing as a whole – but, bit for bit, the dead painting started to come to life.
It was almost five in the morning when you were able to pack your things together and started to flee into a hidden corridor that would bring you back to your dormitory.
A few hours later the studentship and the teachers would be confronted with an Entrance Hall that looked quite different than it had done since they had last seen it. A wall to the left of the stairs had been completely covered in a painting, reaching from one end to the other. Only your mother would notice the similarity in its structure to one specific painting that she had once created of her son and a frog, depicting how he saw the world.
The painting was a mosaic of dozens of compartmentalized pictures that had been woven together to form a larger construct. There was a dark forest to the right with many a creature moving in and out of it. There were huge spiders, unicorns, one majestic Hippogriff and a few other creatures that moved around their place in the picture, always staying as far away from the Dementors as was possible.
There was a large tree, angrily striking at a blue raven that was trying to fly closer to it. The bird evaded most of the swiping attacks, but was thrown to the ground every now and then, when the tree hit it. It fell to the ground, staying there for a bit until it was able to fly upwards again, repeating the cycle.
A large sea stretched out in the back of the picture, its water changing from a dark blue to a pure black in the span of a second. When you looked away, something moved its head out of it, but it disappeared every time you tried to focus on it; never allowing you to catch what it was.
The mountains in the background were far away, but there were some goblins moving in and out of a few caves. The caves themselves were dark and deep. The black inside moved as if alive.
Most of the rest of the picture were specific parts of the castle. Rooms that appeared and disappeared, stairs that moved, ghosts that threw their surroundings into chaos. There were many students without faces, moving through stairs and floors, occasionally interacting with each other. Words appeared here and there, speaking of riddles that you had found in your exploration. A cat moved through the different parts of the castles as if it had no rules set to stay inside its compartment, like the rest of the actors.
And in the centre of it all; a three-legged stool with an old and weathered hat on it.
You only slept for two hours that night, but when you woke up, you felt more refreshed and awake than you had felt in months.
You heard the whispers for days. There were rumours that the painting was going to be removed soon. Many lunches were spent with speculation as to who had done this.
Weeks later, the picture was still there and few asked themselves were it had come from.
It now was as much a part of Hogwarts as the wall it had been painted on.

February was cold, miserable and without any adventure. The time you didn't spent finishing your preparations for the exams at the end of the year, you spent either in a dark corridor, reading and deciphering an even darker book or with Megan, looking for more of the mysterious runes that had been worked into the castle's walls.
One of both projects progressed better than the other.
→ Dark Arts +2 → New Grade, D-
→ Ancient Runes +1 → New grade, D+
→ 'Abilities' unlocked → Pact Making I developed.
→ Class Progress: 1/5 progress to next skill level
→ Runes Club Findings: 6/10 progress to find Castle Runes
→ Ancient Runes +2 → New Grade, P-
Runes Club Gang, DC 50 (+LCK) → 1D100+4 → 47 (43 + 4) → Failure! → No Progress.
Pact Making I – This is a dark art in its purest form; a magical binding between multiple parties. While a Pact does not force a party to comply by the word of the agreement, it does punish a breaking of the Pact. Something, that you do not understand yet, witnesses the Pact and then resides inside the involved party, only to awaken when the contract is broken or fulfilled. The consequences depend on how grave the actions against the Pact were, but are always harsh in nature. One is always advised to follow the rules of a Pact. You are only able to form Pacts, when there is a bilateral agreement on its contents. You do not understand what exactly happens during the Pact, nor the circumstances surrounding it.
The book, even though written with shit and blood, was the most fascinating thing you had ever read. It described a completely new branch of magic that you had never even heard before. While you had known that magical contracts were a thing, this was somehow different from it. Here it was not your own magic that formed the bindings. The book described an outside force, that you couldn't quite place yet. It was difficult piecing together the meaning behind the unknown runes and words, but by starting with the parts you did understand, you were able to decipher some of that language that you didn't understand.
Now that you had something you were working for, understanding runes had become one of the most important things in your day to day life. You started learning of methods to decode cryptographies and foreign languages. Many afternoons were spent either deep in that dark corridor or at one of the tables inside the library. A brand-new notebook was soon filled with hundreds of words that you had decoded. Even if you didn't know how they were spoken aloud, you started to get a hang of the foul language, Girzum had been speaking.
By the end of it, you knew how to form a Pact, but there were many more things that were still missing.
One of both projects progressed better than the others. Because it did take only a few weeks for you to crack the book, while the meaning behind the castle's runes was still a mystery.
"Are you listening to me?" Megan asked, pulling you out of your thoughts.
"What." You said, before realizing that she had been speaking to you.
The two of you were sitting on a bench near the room of the Duelling Club. Since the end of your last lesson, both of you had been searching the castle again. You had chosen to do it more methodically, going from floor to floor and inspecting many possible places that you could have overlooked in your explorations for hidden floors. It proved effective. Because soon, you and Megan had two more sets of runes that were added to your collection.
While it was getting clear that they were some kind of foundation for magic, you had still no inkling as to what it actually did.
"That is not as charming as you think it is," she said, looking quite annoyed.
"I'm sorry," you said. "What did you say? I was thinking about something else."
"Yes," Megan confirmed. "Your attention is always somewhere else."
Your eyes focussed on her green ones. She looked … hurt? What had you missed? Did you say something insensitive? Thinking back, you were positive that you hadn't been talking all too much for the last few minutes … oh. That was it, right?
"I'm sorry," you said again. "I'm trying my best, but I just can't focus at times."
Megan had always been the quietest Hufflepuff. Before the Incident, you would have categorized her as someone without many friends. Even if most people liked her, they didn't associate with her too much. You had always seen those things, because people were at times just as interesting as other forms of riddles. You just liked to see the human riddles from afar and limit the interaction.
Just like you, she too had changed over the year. She was more assertive, gaining a sense of self-confidence that hadn't been there before. While she made the largest progress in Runes, she had been more present in all the classes you shared.
But there was one more difference, that you had not realized as early as you would have liked; she was different around you than with others. It had taken a while for you to understand where that came from.
"I'm not good with things like that," you added.
Her expression changed. Annoyance turned to anger for a moment, before it froze and made room for a softer expression. "I am sorry," she said after a while.
"I …" You started, before thinking of a way to formulate your thoughts. "Sometimes, when I think about things, I imagine how those things look like. I mean, I take ideas and give them a metaphorical form, to visualize my thoughts and impressions." Your words were spoken softly, closing the notebook in your hand with the new glyphs that had been noted down today.
"The impression form pictures that explain my point of view, so that I am able to show that perspective to other people … in a way so that they may understand and feel what I feel."
Megan looked at you attentively. It was quite obvious now that you thought of it. Something that would have escaped your attention for a bit longer, if you hadn't taken time to reflect on your own thoughts before.
"I think you are doing the same. You have a picture of me in your mind that doesn't exist. It is one of a bright individual that is there to save and help others. He is strong, smart and capable of guiding, because I did one thing that you see as heroic and good." Your eyes stayed on her, even when she looked away from you. Her expression turned into a mirror of her emotions. Just for a moment you felt like you were about to draw a picture, the image was right there; a kind girl that found herself amidst a changed world. Where you had been able to accept the changes in your life, this girl was having some trouble with it.
For a moment, you saw potential and possibilities laid out before her. There were a thousand roads she could walk, but she was still carrying a rock that was as heavy as herself. It was holding her back.
You took that rock out of her hand: "But I am not that picture, Megan. I did not do that for any of you, but for myself. I felt intrigued by a mystery that was hidden deep inside my mind and I followed the few leads I had. While I did feel bad for Sally-Ann - and I swear, to see through her eyes is to this day one of the memories that hurt me the most – I would have done the same even if it hadn't been a good thing."
Green eyes found their way back to yours again. Megan had never looked prettier to you.
"I am not someone you should lean on, because I do not want to compromise on the things I do want," you said in the end.
Her expression was set. The rock had fallen away, crumbled on the ground behind her.
"I don't think I asked you to be my support," she said. There was no smile on her face. Her words were spirited, but without anger behind them.
"Good," you said.
"Good," she answered, eyes not wavering.
"So, what were you saying before?"
Megan looked at you, the picture that was waiting to be painted disappeared the moment she talked again. A thousand roads ahead of her had disappeared, only one remained suddenly. The rock had turned into dust behind her, as Megan walked her first steps forward. You didn't know what road she had chosen, because she had taken your consideration out of that equation and thrown you out of that picture.
"Forget what I told you," she said. "I want you to tell me something." Megan leaned back into the cushioned bench. "We have a few minutes before you need to go and play, tell me about your home, please."
There was a smile on her face. This one was different than the others she usually gifted you, but you couldn't place the reason for that. The picture you had been imagining of her disappeared completely. Both of you started anew, forgetting old biases and halting the projection of own ideals and ideas onto the other person.
"Hmm … where would I start? Imagine being old … very old … no even older than that!"

The rest of the month flew by. You wrote your parents about what had happened and what you had found hidden deep inside the mountains; while your mother was worried and made your father write that you needed to be careful, he had given you quite a different set of advice.
'You are everything I wished for in a son.'
You read that line over and over again. Even if he had his troubles in showing it, you knew that your father loved you just as much as your mother did. Still, reading that sentence had made you feel all warm and fuzzy and smile at your letter for minutes. While he told you to be cautious, he supported your decision in exploring the caves hidden beneath Helga's Hall. One thing stood out, though.
'But I would advise you to read more about our history before you do.'
That could only mean one book and one history. Your father was advising you to progress in your exploration of the memories of Basques. Was there a connection you had missed?
At the end of the letter, there was one short recipe that had been added there by your mother. It was likely a reaction to you mentioning that you had progressed by leaps and bounds in your Potion studies. Well, a new item for your notebook at least.

Ghostly Goggles – Magical Item. You now have a much higher understanding about what it is to be a ghost. For a second, you walked in their shoes and looked through their eyes. They live in a spectrum of the world far different to yours, bridging between the here and the there as most of their magic has passed on and some of their soul stayed behind. You may be able to build something that did the same; give an item magic and then simulate the process the Grey Lady let you feel. Simulate the process of dying and give yourself the ability to see between the living- and the afterlife. [While wearingGhostly Goggles; Allows you to see the spirits of the living; Gain a +5 in combat against creatures; Gain the ability to see a form of afterimages as footprints that living creatures leave behind; Gain the ability to see living things through walls; ?? when interacting with Dementors ??] (Requires Alchemy and Ancient Runes skill of at least P), DC: 400.

Draconifors(Deep Understanding) - Transfiguration. DC: 100.
Engorgio - Transfiguration. The Engorgement Charm, also known as Growing Charm is a charm that causes the target to swell immensely. If the caster attempts to engorge the target beyond a certain point it will violently explode. Expelliarmus(Deep Understanding) - DADA. The Disarming Charm, is a defensive spell which forces the victim to release whatever they were holding at the time. Expecto Patronum - What stops an unstoppable force? - DADA. The Patronus Charm, is a ancient and mysterious charm conjures a magical guardian, a projection of all your most positive feelings. The Patronus Charm is difficult, and many witches and wizards are unable to produce a full, corporeal Patronus, a guardian which generally takes the shape of the animal with whom they share the deepest affinity. You may suspect, but you will never truly know what form your Patronus will take until you succeed in conjuring (Requires Charm and DADA skill of at least P),DC 500, DC 300 + New trait if learned while Lupin is Professor.

Where you would usually expect a small flame, you are able to cast out a fireball as big as a head, roaring through the air and able to cause significant damage. DC: 100.
Lumos (Deep Understanding) - Charm. The Wand-Lighting Charm is a charm and a light-creation spell. It's used to illuminate the tip of the caster's wand; this light is fairly warm. The counter-charm for the spell is the Wand-Extinguishing Charm (Nox), which is used to extinguish the light from the caster's wand. You are now able to keep the spell up, while casting other spells simultaneously. DC: 50.
Phinidae (Basic Understanding) – Transfiguration. Spell Creation. Turn objects into mostly living creatures. You remember a day in your childhood, when you were able to turn a lifeless clay doll into something that moved and acted like a real animal. (Requires Arithmancy & Magical Theory of at least P-), DC: 150.
Point Me - Charm. The Four-Point Spell (Point Me) is a spell that causes the caster's wand to behave as if it were a compass and point North. Hold the wand flat in the palm of your hand and say the incantation. The wand will spin and point north. It is one of the few known incantations to be in modern English, rather than Latin or another ancient language. Note for later: How are spells created? DC: 50.
Protego (Deep Understanding) – DADA. Stronger version of the Shield Charm. Protego is a term applied to several varieties of charms. They create a magical barrier to deflect physical entities and spells, in order to protect a certain person or area. Conjurations may sometimes rebound directly off it back towards the caster or in other cases, may ricochet off in other directions or dissipate as soon as they hit the shield. Requires DADA Skill of A, gives a +15 to defending rolls, DC: 150.
Reparo(Deep Understanding) – Charm. The Mending Charm, also known as the Repairing Charm, is a charm that can be used to seamlessly repair a broken object and works on most materials. This useful charm was invented by Orabella Nuttley, in or before 1754. There aren't many things with too heavy a damage or that are simply too large for you to not be able to repair them as swift as a blink of the eye by now. DC: 100.
Tempus - Charm. The Time-Telling Charm is a spell which tells the current time when cast. The wand needs to be pointed upwards and will then spin into the hour of the day. It will spin once for am and twice for pm. DC: 50.
Waddiwasi (Basic Understanding) – Charm. It was used by Professor Lupin to shoot the wad of chewing gum out of the keyhole and straight down Peeves's left nostril, but if you think about it, it could be used for any kind of other things. Waddiwasi is the incantation of a charm that can be used to shoot a small mass of whatever the caster so desires at the target. DC 50.

@Tabula Rasa Now that we know the Blue Wideye potion, Can we sell it other students and ask them to pay in advance? And to do so which action would be needed?
@Tabula Rasa Now that we know the Blue Wideye potion, Can we sell it other students and ask them to pay in advance? And to do so which action would be needed?
I'm pretty sure that when Hogwarts is taken over by death eaters in the last book dark arts is added as a subject, so really we're just studying ahead.
You heard the whispers for days. There were rumours that the painting was going to be removed soon. Many lunches were spent with speculation as to who had done this.
Weeks later, the picture was still there and few asked themselves were it had come from.
It now was as much a part of Hogwarts as the wall it had been painted on.
You know, this has remindmed me of that chapter of Disney's Recess in which Spinelli paints the entire schoolyard and all the students are so impressed that they keep avoing t step on it and try to convince Ms Finster to wash it out...
You were spending much more time on learning magic, spells and potions than was comfortable for you for several months now. It had been catching up to you and you were feeling a pressure on your mind that hadn't been there before.
Ok I loved it. We make a pact with a imp and dad says he loves us. Was daddy Basque a evil warlock in the past. Actually I am wondering what our ancestors did that he believes his Best advice is Learn the history on the first Basque. I am guessing they did something with the Fae.
