Really says something about Jacob where he finds a secret test that he deduces to be about friendship and unity between houses and he decides to just do the whole thing alone.

Also I was wondering why he was worried about how much water he had left when there's a spell to create water, but it turns out that spell (Aguamenti) is considered a sixth year spell and advanced magic, therefore he wouldn't know it.

And creating water is a rather interesting spell. The water it creates seems to be permanent and can be drunk. How does it do what it does? Does it gather water vapor? Does it combine oxygen and hydrogen? Does it convert magic into water, seeming to make it out of nothing but raw magic? In any case, it seems like a usual spell for exploring.

Well, it's a conjuration spell - it "creates something out of nothing". And it's not "good food", so it's not subject to the First Principal Exception of Gamp's Law of Elemental Transfiguration.

So, yeah, I guess the canon explanation is "magic".

Im confused.

Most are treating the last as the first because it says the 4th is the first.

It doesn't make sense because otherwise they could just say the last is the first.

Also isnt the 4th "As one they will follow the jewel"?

[X] I am the Hufflepuff

Hm, I will have to think upon it further, but for now, I think that Hufflepuff is the correct answer.

The current theory is that the steps being referred to are the 4 challenges (one for each house) and not the fourth line in the riddle.
I believe said line is about the circle in which the lion guardian attacks you.

Note: we also have hints from the Jacob's inner monologue that the steps are what's important

My theory is this:
IMO the order of the challanges
  1. Hufflepuff - staying behind
  2. Gryffindor - battling the lion headed guardian long enough for
  3. Ravenclaw - solving the riddle
  4. Slytherin - tricking the riddler by answering
Hufflepuff

Which makes fits the logic of the riddle, and fits narratively (friendship trial and all that)

Things that might also be relevant are the order of the statutes in the beginning (fourth is Hufflepuff) and persistent/badgering theory (which is probably just me)

This is a confusing one. Both sides make an enormous amount of sense. But considering that Hufflepuff has already been used as an option, I'm leaning towards the Ravenclaw option as it matches with the theme of being the one who answers the riddle.
But then again the fourth being the first makes it seem like Hufflepuff. Or perhaps there are no right answers here and we will most likely get a reward that somehow links to one of the houses?
Honestly not sure, but we need social boons so on the off chance I'm miraculously correct ->

[X] I am the Hufflepuff

Y'all want to lie and say we're the Hufflepuff? There's one detail I think you guys are overlooking

Note how this says that there's only one that's "true". Not "correct" or "right".

[X] I am the Ravenclaw

I think this is just a generic warning saying that there is only one correct answer.

It is basically asking us to solve the puzzle instead of just giving it our house name.

That is actually really well spotted.

Voting for Ravenclaw for now.

[X] I am the Ravenclaw

I don't think it's based on what's true for the person answering. Otherwise you'd get a chorus of answers presumably that differ in the normal use case.

Yes exactly. I don't think it's much of a riddle if a single line invalidates every bit of brain teasery beforehand and just goes actually just state your house affiliation. That'd be kind of boring.

The true answer to a riddle is not what is true to Jacob.

I am super glad that the riddle turned out to be a good idea. I had a lot of fun writing this and was trying for you to once again feel as if you are in Jacob's shoes. You learn of the world I'm presenting together with our little Ravenclaw Sherlock. Tbh I was somewhat wondering if I'd be able to pull this of, because it's a new genre for me as well, but I'm learning a lot from all of your reactions.

One thing I'd like to say is: You guys fucking rock. It's unbelievable how immersed you are at times, picking up on small clues (or falling over interpretations that may not be correct.)

I'm happy to say that the correct solution has been stated (if once or more than once, I will not say. All clues are only to be found in the story.) And it was even explained with most of the explanation to get to the solution. It's so much fun to see you analyzing the chapter, banding together and solving the problem.

I hope you guys are seeing that I was trying to show you what the riddle is trying to show Jacob: That sometimes people need to work together. Even if Jacob consequently shits on that haha I have started to love this character you guys created. It's so much fun to write him, because he has his own mind and it's fun writing of someone consequently swimming against the current.

For those of you, who don't want to participate in the riddle solving (I understand! It's not for everyone), I'd be happy for you to tell me how this chapter felt as a whole. I'm learning to write this genre and would love the feedback.

As I said before: Thank you guys for sharing this process with me, I'm having at least as much fun as you are :)
