A Golden Island To The West — California ISOT from 2018 to 1850

Guardian is beating around a horse that died decades ago.
This was the exact issue in Germany, where women chose to pursue jobs. It just resulted in men going out with immigrants from then Turkey and Vietnam. Or themselves emigrating to other countries.
It's going to solve itself in the exact same way- except there is always going to be women willing to come live in Cali- once China and Japan become open to them, its just going to be a repeat of history.

Not true. Gun control was common in the 19th century.

www.smithsonianmag.com

Gun Control Is as Old as the Old West

Contrary to the popular imagination, bearing arms on the frontier was a heavily regulated business

And in fact, if you told the "gun grabbers" who told you that you had to turn over your gun to them until you left town "over my dead body" their answer would be "this is an acceptable proposal" and shoot you to death.
Thank you for making me think of the scene from "Men in Black" when the cockroach takes over Edgar

Guardian54 please keep your weird MRA shit out of this thread.

Hard MATH and ECONOMICS being applied to human relationships is "weird"?
Well, I suppose if we're talking Alien Space Bats or ROB, maybe it is. Hmm...

Hold on, ARE you going off the "One Great Lie" premise of good writing? If you are, then through typing these problems out I have achieved a train of thought that can help you dodge the MATH problem.

Statistics don't say jack shit about individuals, but when you have many thousands of individuals, the general trends are quite predictable.

I was about to ask this:
Mind explaining why exactly "being able to afford children" is going to influence masses of people to have more than two children? Sure, there's going to be a few who just want plenty of kids, but modern life has lots of fun distractions.
Please provide some justification (even if it's "BECAUSE I SAID SO" in which case we can write it off as "Author Fiat") that Californian men are not going to experience a large increase of relationship prospects relative to Californian women.

Then I thought of of an obvious one you might want to use if you don't want this to happen:

(Yes, that's broken SOD)

The obvious reason you can use to not have Cold Hard Math start breaking SoD is that much of the world sees representatives of Californian men like Japanese women see "Herbivore men".
Many Californian men are seen by Local women as too apathetic/lackadaisical and don't seem to know what they want. They aren't sweeping Local women off their feet and don't feel reliable enough with how they just shrug when the woman pushes what she thinks should be his boundaries. It's like they can't be arsed to care for their wives/girlfriends* and won't "Man Up".

*Note: If you haven't heard of women trying to make men jealous, I got a bridge to Terebithia to sell ya. The problem is that many things that Local women would think of as really pushing the limits just gets a "Le Shrug" from Translocated men.

There, I just solved the problem I posed. Socratic method with myself FTW.

I hope this helps you avoid the MATH + ECONOMICS plausibility problem.

[citation fucking needed] [because you just made that up]

Huh. Well then... On to something entirely unrelated to all that... I'm curious what some of the more famous downtimers think of some of the movies and other historical fiction about them. We know Lincoln has locked himself in his house, but what about any others out there?

Do you think it's possible that California is going to import and export so many goods that the Cali dollar will become the major global currency?

Can I just say that I love how the mod who steps in to stop the MRA Party in here has the emblem of a bunch of equal opportunity murderclowns backed by a bunch of people who put the mad in mad scientist? Anyway, on to actually cool posts!

Once people get past the weirdness of a floating currency in a world of gold? Yeah probably.

Especially once it's clear that there is something backing it. The population, knowledge and might of California.

A lot of California's water problems is from growing cash crops like alfalfa and almonds, growing more food stuff would require a lot less water.
Which are in turn partly caused by farmers being spoiled by plentiful irrigation and no longer making use of dry farming for certain crops that can make use of it.

I like to think that Lincoln's life will get a little less stressful with time. I mean, dude has been made into something far greater and purer that he was, but he is aware of it and the fact must be crushing him. The thing I like the most about him in this verse is finding out that he is exchanging letters with Jefferson Davis.

Nathaniel Hawthorne probably feel good with the fact that The Scarlet Letter is still in vogue in the future, but maybe a little put out to the fact that they have The House of the Seven Gables already when he has been hurrying up to finish it. On the other hand, I can imagine Cal publishers getting in contact with several still living writers to get their permission on publishing books they still haven't thought of in their states/countries to avoid legal disputes from hell, and they being a) weirded out, and b) excited that they get to see their work already finished without having to got through the hell of writing it all down themselves. Like, I can imagine Victor Hugo being excited by just seeing how big the book of Les Miserables is.

Hopefully some form of protection has been extended to the major abolitionist figures and alt-future Presidents, given how readily certain people would try to assassinate them. Lincoln might hide in his cabin, sure, but nothing in the world would keep Thaddeus Stevens from baiting Southerners and conservatives in public (not to mention the scrutiny his 'housekeeper' is likely to receive given 2012's Lincoln being a thing). Frankly, every major figure for the next fifty-some years is going to be in a state of quasi-celebrity/infamy and danger for the rest of their lives, and that's going to be a whole other mess. Imagine, for instance, how Robert E Lee or Ulysses Grant feel about their alternate futures ... or how people in uniform near them will feel.

I imagine he'll be even happier about the success of Notre-Dame de Paris in helping to preserve the cathedral, if a little bemused at the Disney version.

I have some plans for figures like Lee...

Let's just say that the Lost Cause Mythology from uptime's Lost History will be an influence on the South ITTL.

Ew. I knew this would happen, but ew.

Yeah, he really was into preserving Notre Dame. Unfortunately (??) the fire didn't happen before the Event, it would have been funny if they got told that there was a huge fire but they can rebuild thanks to a videogame and also the bees are safe they were just sleepy.

I just looked him up on Wikipedia and it's nice to know that the 'it was another time so everyone was racist' stuff doesn't hold to reality.

So, just to confirm?

Hoover Dam is being built. The State has examples of Hydroelectric Dams all over.

Would they try to expand Northward to Canada and the Hydroelectric chain of Dams for the Columbia River and the Grand Coulee Dam?

The Grand Coulee made it possible to Irrigate a large area capable of feeding a lot.

How many Sats do they have for Orbital?

Edit: I just had the image of an Uptime Company buying Land around Niagara Falls and build the Welland Canal and Hydroelectric Dams, or intentions to build?

I said a while back that California should try to recruit young scholars and children who were great inventors and scientists in Lost History and give them an uptime education. Thomas Edison was three years old at the time of the Event, for example. (Sadly, Tesla wasn't born until 1856.) I might try to make a more complete list when I have time, but long story short, you can extend it a lot further than politicians and authors.
