A Flung Light (Worm/minor toaru cross)

It'll be interesting to see how things develop with the Esper crew having this new knowledge.

On one hand, removing the gangs from the Bay is probably only a matter of time now considering what they've done.
On the other hand, there is that little problem of Scion apparently snapping when he detects Mental Out etc.

And in order to survive said snapping/beat Scion, 10 to 1 they're going to have to reach Level 5+. The issue is that in the Toaru setting from everything I can find, the only Espers that ever reached this point were plugged into the Misaka Network; which is not a thing here. If it's pure computing power they need t pull it off, they might be able to use the modified Shard that is attached to Nozomi. But if they need AIM energy instead, that's going to be a lot more complected.
Accelerator only needed to be connected to the radio noise network because he had a very minor case of serious brain damage. He literally got shot in the head. Even when under the network he was actually weaker than he was before he was shot. The wings he has when in level 5.2 or whatever we want to call it are actually what are doing to calculations. Anyway, what is actually needed for a level 6 shift isn't fully known. Some things are theorized and some are confirmed.

One thing is possibly some connection to magic, this might just be an understanding though. Another is a change of how one sees the world, basically a form of enlightenment. Another is a change of how one sees themselves, different form of enlightenment. A sufficient level of power, Mikoto got this from the network, Accelerator could actually do this on his own before he got shot he just didn't get there yet. Finally, the thing Mikoto doesn't have but Accelerator does, a body strong enough or some way to make your body strong enough to handle the shift.

Mikoto, and Keiko here, might actually be able to do it if she was to master what Junko does. Junko is an eletromaster who physically enhances herself and has regen. Keiko is already doing that. I have no idea what Nozomi could do. Charlotte might be able to pull off what the endbringers do.

How self-absorbed did you have to be to choose that name? There was nothing glorious about capes, but it fit with the costume she chose.
All of New Wave's costumes were like that, more glamour than function.

Knights in Shining Armour, pretending nothing was wrong.

Just like the Protectorate.

The entire setup was a lie Alexandria created.
She's really stressed and lost a lot of faith in the world.

Keiko hugged me. "Stop being stupid," she chided. "Spill. You're not putting this onto yourself."
Keiko is a good friend.

The white-haired boy, the brown-haired girl and the spiky black-haired boy were facing off against Scion and his silver female counterpart.

"They are fighting Scion," Charlotte fidgeted. "Why are they fighting Scion? Sure, he isn't all there, but he's the guy rescuing kittens from trees."

Because he's what will kill us all.
The old man in his lab coat merely watched. I noticed he had a prosthetic hand, now that I had time to look at him. His gleeful face was the most disconcerting thing here. Everyone else was angry, sad or determined. He looked like he was having fun.
"Probably blondie's fault," Keiko pointed at the blonde girl next to lab coat gramps, "she must've pissed him off somehow. It would explain why no one's ever heard of the silver bitch. And oh boy would that have him pissed."
Damn that was an absolute clusterfuck and no one won.

"The entire Triumvirate knows about the power granting vials. At least two of them got their powers from them, probably all of them," I began, "They're looking to bury any investigation into it. They have done so before. It won't be hard for them, what with Alexandria being the Chief Director of the PRT and Legend leading the Protectorate."
And now they know how deep the corruption runs it was there from the start.

"We wouldn't survive printing the first line," I sighed, "If we had any proof at all."

"What. Why?" Charlotte forced her fists open.

"They have been at this for thirty years. They have sold powers for thirty years. They will have kept ties to the ones who got the best powers. Made sure they felt positively towards them. Made sure they'd help them out. They'll have done that for every single power category, including all kinds of thinkers."
They've gotten themselves set up.

Because I did that.

First I chose my best friend. Then I found someone who I believed wouldn't abuse their new power. But more importantly I chose someone who was isolated. Alone. Who'd latch onto an offer of friendship unseen. That was not an accident.

I hated that similarity.
She hates them all the more because they're similar.

Main reason they apparently decided to pull a 'Fling a Light into the Future'/'Message in the Bottle'. They had no idea if they would survive/win and so decided at the very least they would try to give the next world they Entities visited a bit of help.

I thought it was less 'strong enough body' and more the sheer mental capability to control/direct all the power.

Level 6 shift increases your mental capacity. An espers mental capacity is a significant portion of their power, if an esper didn't have the mental capacity to handle level 6 shifting they wouldn't do it. Basically what Accelerator is doing is he's controlling his body's vectors to hold it together. If Mikoto were to have an application of her power to do the same thing she would probably be fine.

Ah, I had figured the body wasn't as absolute a concern considering during the Exterior-enforced Shift, Mikoto's form was constantly changing/evolving as a result of the ever growing power.

I'm pretty sure her body changing like that was basically her body basically slowly converting into a lightning elemental trying to handle her power and the process was slowly killing her. Junko's ability could let her enhance her body in a way that wouldn't kill her. Granted Junko experiences extreme pain as she gets to the threshold of level 5, but it's implied that that she would move past that problem.

You went out of your way to make them think you did not know. You're scared. Scared of the Protectorate."

She was too smart for her own good.
This feels a bit weird for her to be focused on considering she's been hiding her powers the whole time anyway, so why would her doing the same misdirection as usual mean she's scared?
Seems a bit forced as a way to move the plot along but a bit of plot bulldozing can be useful I guess.

A little of A a little of B.
Personal realities and souls are closely tied to their body as seen by the Coffins and cybernetic augmentation working at all, but what each component means is highly mutable, and well...personal.

The crux with Mikoto was that she wasn't ready/stable yet and so she just kept mutating - her mind was apparently fine, when she regained consciousness after Misaki won her end of things, despite still being shifted, she was aware and able enough to choose to contain the higher dimensional energy with her body rather than destroy the city.

So its a reasonable supposition that given more character development she would be able to manage the forces, she IS the second backup plan after Kakine, meaning there is a viable pathway, its just harder compared to Accelerator's omnikinesis and Kakine's omniconjuration.

Does look like Mental Out managed to punch above her weight class and cripple Eden then, which allowed Fortuna to shank her after she crashed. Cauldron still got created after all, but I wonder if Contessa and/or Doctor Mother know more about what happened, given that Fortuna got a much more thorough trigger vision.

The question is how. Because at the core Mental Out is all about precise fluid manipulation etc. Not exactly something that would bother Eden.
At its core her power works via fluid manipulation sure. But it also does more than that. She has her pre and post cognition. On some level her power also works via basically just straight psychic links. It's more than just fluid manipulation. As she progresses along level five her potential would probably open up and expand. As she approaches level 6 I could see her gaining the ability to mess with things other than just liquid. Esper powers only work how they think they do and only work via a skeleton of science.

I think you meant pretend
Dinah has become nice :V
Typos fixed.

*Checks ages*
Hm, the wiki doesn't list how old Manpower is, although later in the chapter you reveal Biribiri is gay, so I suppose it's irrelevant regardless.
Manpower isn't the one interested in Biribiri, Shielder (the highschool student) is.
Yes. Shielder is the one interested. BiriBiri is also only interested to talk about Manpower's powers. Manpower has the electricity body-forcefield in New Wave.

So. "How do you kill a god?" Well, depends on what kind of god, really. Scion is no god. Yes, he's f*ckton powerful, but not god. In short, he's just a computer, hiding his body in another dimension. Destroy body, collapse dimension, upload virus. Just from the top of my mind.

If its Mental Out, almost definitely psychological attack on the human emulation of their avatar to do something irreversible even after shutting that down.

Since the avatar is definitely non-biological, her powers will not affect him at all, so her psychological attack would require capturing Jack Slash, and controlling him into doing it for her.

The problem is, that would require actually knowing Jack has the shard that can be used to give "suggestions" that Scion will just follow without thinking about. (Because he is the one that is not the thinker.) Most people think Jack's power is just some knifey thing. Also most people don't want to be anywhere near him. (The sane ones, anyway.)

Interlude 29 gives us the best look at the entities Avatar bodies. Looks pretty biological and human to me.

Anyway, what is actually needed for a level 6 shift isn't fully known.
Which means I get to make things up :p

The Avatar is literally as human as possible, since the purpose is pretty much to have a reference point for the human experience. Its basically the Balance Formula's purpose, and why it'd prevent Case 53 mutations.

I just went through that whole chapter, and the most description Scion gets is "a golden man" - human biology by the way, can not do that - and Eden's description is of a half formed humanoid shape that needs to be stabbed in a very specific spot to make sure it doesn't just ignore the wound or get back up afterwards. Frankly, that's like saying Weld, who is made entirely of metal, is totally a valid target and human biologically, and thus easily readable and controllable.

Doesn't sound very human biology and brain chemistry to me, but then nobody was willing to accept that Alexandria was non-standard biology. Remember, Mental Out's math for reading and controll requires _exact_ human biology to work, otherwise it's unclear guesses, or nothing at all.

At first I was going "don't tell the people who can't pretend not to know!" but as long as they keep their mouths shut cauldron doesn't have a problem with them.

It's very funny that they found out about Scion and cauldron and not that cauldron is there to fight Scion.

Most likely they'll use a modified level upper network.

I don't think Legend knew prior to the big Cauldron reveal that resulted from Alexandria and Eidolon being cloned by Noelle. Eidolon had an anti-mind reading power running, and Alexandria stores her memories 'off-site' as it were so Mental Out can't access them.

Oh why that happens makes perfect sense. It's just funny the they found out two pieces of information but not the connection.

He knew some of that stuff by then tho because during the s9 arc he got suspicious due to Battery breaking down on her deathbed from a Bonesaw poison one of the spiderbots got her with and confessing about buying her power and them calling in the favours to have her join the wards and then ensure Shatterbird and Siberian left the city alive and that Lisa worked out the Siberian was a master and when they tracked where he was Legend himself saw it was Manton with the Ziz tatoo and Contessa stepped in to keep him alive from Legend's atks. Due to that he had kid win whip up a bug he left behind after a meeting which he then used to eavesdrop on it and learned some of the stuff they were keeping from him. Despite that tho he did nothing to stop them and still went to bat for them and make them out as good guys after the reveals by claiming they only used the vials on customers, volunteers and those who would otherwise die as they'd previously had him believe by blaming Manton and another defector for the case 53s.

I have to admit, I was rather skeptical about this story; this is my second try, but at least now I've managed to stick with it and catch up.

I'll sum it up with one word: interesting.

This story's pacing is definitely in keeping with its source media, with the protagonist apparently going from getting her powers to building fame and a small power base to ultimately toppling two criminal organizations and receiving earth-shaking revelations that erode her faith in humanity within two weeks.

If its Mental Out, almost definitely psychological attack on the human emulation of their avatar to do something irreversible even after shutting that down.
That's assuming she was involved in whatever they did to stop the Entities. She's definitely clearly one of the people behind turning a Shard into a last-ditch time capsule/weapon, though, given that it was her power that was somehow copied, complete with a full technical database and whatever experimental fuckery that allows the MC to turn someone into a combat-ready esper in days, as well as the flashback's focus on her.

That said, going by the flashback, life definitely has not been kind to one Shokuhou Misaki in this timeline, going by this part:
"Huh, she has your eyes," Keiko was looking at the final person present. A blond girl that.. sad did not encompass how she looked. Despairing wasn't quite it either. Like someone who thought their life was already over?

"I suspect it's more accurate to say that I have her eyes," I looked at the remote she held. Then at the strange green frog plushie which hung from a strap on her handbag. A third of it was singed. Yet she had kept it. It must mean something to her. Her other hand held a book, though it was fuzzy as if her attention wasn't on it when she created this memory.
I think the implication is that the Gekota is the only thing she's got left of Hokaze, hence keeping it as a memento. It's likely that the rest of her clique friend circle is gone too. I suspect that the only person she had left to live for at the moment the memory was created was Kamijou, and he a) couldn't remember her anyway and b) possibly ended up KIA at some point afterwards.

Life has been particularly unkind to Mental Out in this timeline (or Raildex hydrotelepaths in general), but perhaps here her successor can reverse that trend?
