A Flung Light (Worm/minor toaru cross)

Also, I believe it's "I can scarcely believe it", taken from "I can hardly believe it".
neither is more correct than the others. Though claiming scarce/scarcely is taken from hardly is ... not accurate. If which usage gave rise to which is important to you, then scarce, leads to scarcely, leads to hardly.

"I threatened Lung," Charlotte muttered. The ice in her tea had melted by now.
Yeah it's something that's shocked her given Lung's reputation and how prevalent he is in Brockton Bay.

"We had a getaway car ready," I told a half-truth. The Merchants had brought cars. We had not planned for them.

I saw him visible mull it over.

"Reasonable," he stated at last. A smile tentatively grew on my face and the others. "Now what was so urgent this couldn't have waited until Yumie or I got home?"
They where smart about it even if things escalated a lot.

"Before you go do that, let me bring something up before I have to go home since I'm grounded. Still can't believe you managed to wiggle yourself out of a punishment," Keiko grumbled.
Makes sense she'd be punished.

"They have merely deferred my punishment to Mother since I am getting her out today," I reminded her. Included in that was the implicit demand that I told Mother and did not keep her in the dark. Something I had never planned to do, so an easy concession to make. Not that they knew it. Charlotte was the one who had gotten away Scot-free.
That's pretty reasonable both letting her mom doing the punishment and letting her mom know about what happened.

"No one's perfect," Keiko shrugged. "An arrested one. And we both know he's likely to go through a re-branding instead of prison. I've read enough PRT files stolen by Coil and you've rifled through enough minds to know that."

"The PRT re-brands villains as heroes?" Charlotte frowned.

"Regularly. As long as they aren't more trouble than they're worth," I confirmed that. "At a guess they'll re-brand at least three of the five Undersiders, maybe four. Regent got up to way too much, Hellhound is borderline."

"Hellhound is a murderer. They let them get away with what.. a slap on the wrist?" Charlotte crossed her arms. "Slap a new coat of paint on them and let them call themselves heroes? They are that desperate for manpower?"

I wobbled my hand. "A good lawyer might get her manslaughter. She doesn't actually control her dogs and her only kills where when she freshly triggered." Not that it was likely that she would get a good lawyer. "She still had her dogs hurt a lot of people later though. They do put restrictions and punishment on their recruits, but not nearly as much as they probably should. They also completely keep it secret from the public. They do it for a simple reason. They know they are losing. So they grab any parahuman they remotely can. It's not a compromise I have to make." I had a much bigger pool to choose from.
It's pretty much standard operating procedure and has been for a while, Assault got away with a lot of stuff from his Madcap days for example.

My cheeks hurt from smiling.

Mother carefully took a sip of her tea. Usually I had trouble focusing and would start to fidget instead of holding the seiza as she did, but not today. I watched her every move as I waited patiently for her to speak. Her posture was – as always – picture perfect. She was so beautifully, vibrantly alive again. Not that horrible unmoving moment that still haunted my dreams every couple days.
She's so happy to have her mother back.

"It has been two weeks, you say?" she looked at me with a blank face.

"Yes. I'm sorry it took-" "Don't. You have nothing to apologize for," she interrupted me. "You commanded space to break time. In only two weeks." She gently shook her head. Two weeks ago I wouldn't have caught her flicker of incredulity. "I can't scarce believe it."

"It has still been too long, Mother," I insisted. Because any time she was stuck in there was too long.
She rescued her mother really quickly.

"That it has. The Kimura's have been taking care of you, I presume," she stated.

"They have been most accommodating," I fell back into the more formal speak.

"I will have to visit and show my gratitude for their help in the trying days you had. But for now tell me about the last two weeks. I wish to know everything."
The Kimura's have been awesome.

"You have arrested Satomi's murderer?"

"I did. Legend took him to New York with him. He did succeed on shipping Bakuda into the birdcage. With the rest of the Nazis cooling their heels in the cells of the local PRT this might be it." I felt hope he'd actually arrive in the birdcage unlike the two other times they had tried.

"I shall pray for his good luck," Mother shared the sentiment. We had high hopes the first time Hookwolf was arrested only for them to turn into disappointment when his gang broke him out. We'd celebrate if he actually made it there. No sooner. She took another sip from her tea.
The hope being taken away from them must've really sucked.

"He got away?" She raised an eyebrow at me. "You have become arrogant, my daughter."

What? My shock must've shown on my face because she elaborated.

"You have removed two of the three major gangs of Brockton. One of them was here for longer than you were alive. You have fought Lung on even terms and your complaint is that you haven't managed more? That he got away? Your success must've gone to your head."
Yeah what the MC and gang has done is monumental.

"So there are." Lao looked past me. His singly eye was looking at Mother. Frowning. Something was bothering him, like he should remember her from somewhere. He definitely remembered me, if only as the girl Bakuda used for her demonstration. "It's the same spiel as every month," he stated deliberately casual. "For the Dragon's protection you gotta cough up his due."

Oh, Lung had a few things overdue. Money was not among them.
That's just bullshit given what his gang has been doing, they haven't really been giving much protection lately.

I feel weird about her mother and I don't mean it in a weird way
I mean it in a Too perfect way
Because of this

Her posture was – as always – picture perfect. She was so beautifully, vibrantly alive again.

It disturbs me

And yeah I vote for no Aisha
But look forward to a women team
But for me Aisha is to much of a security risk
Mark is also included
Though she should just give them powers them discretely

To me this reads like the results of your typical "Asian kid with very strict parents who was always expected to be perfect as a child".
Might mean that Mom has some unresolved and unacknowledged childhood trauma hidden somewhere, but not necessary anything more sinister than that.

At least that's my read on it.

Not that much of a risk if you've got a literal mind reader to vet their sincerity. And at least Aisha is probably the last person to change her mind turn on her allies after sincerely committing to a team.

Besides, if they do plan on recruiting anyone (and they do kind if have to) they're far better off with people like Aisha or Mark who know first hand what it's like to live under the thumb of the gangs and came out the other side as reasonably decent people, rather than some squeaky clean uninvolved outsider who never did anything problematic, but also has a lot to lose and never had to ask themselves what they'd do when the going gets rough.

Sunday, 1th May 2011 – Brockton Bay, Nozomi's home

"Do you wish some tea?" Mother gestured towards the table.

"There is no need for that. We'll just take the money and go," Lao answered though he also moved forward into the room. Yan close behind him. After an instant I decided to let them. The chance to be seen in the hallway was low. In the apartment it was non-existent. "That is, if you have it," he kept his voice low and left any threat unstated. He thought it made him more menacing. A fair assessment.

We didn't have any money. It did not matter.

The door closed behind them and their fate was sealed.

"You couldn't even give me a single undisturbed day with Mother," I hissed at them. A few hours was all I got.

They were a threat. Mother did not have powers.

"I am so sorry for my daughter; it's a hard time fo-" Mother stopped mid speech as she noticed their motionless bodies and starry eyes. The words caught in her throat.

It was lucky that they came when I was here. If they met her without me here..

"I should rip out what passes for a mind in your excuse of a brain and replace it with something half way decent," I ranted at them. I was so sick of dealing with gangs. "Maybe then you'll be more than a tick sucking the life out of others."

"Nozomi.." Mother looked at me worried. Probably about reprisal.

She was defenseless against them. I had to remove the threat.

"Oh, there is no need to worry. They will remember exactly what I want them to. Not that they would mind even if they did remember after I am done with them," I said darkly.

I didn't want to think about what would've happened to Mother if I wasn't here.

I considered. Add a bit of empathy here, trim a bit of cruelty there. Link satisfaction with helping others instead of cutting them down... Insert a gut wrenching feeling of sickness at the thought of hurting Mother. Remove every single memory they have of her...

"Tanaka Nozomi! Stop!" I straightened out in long entrenched instincts at Mother's stern voice.

She was still looking at me worried. Not at them. At me. Why?

Oh, she wasn't worried about retribution. I almost choked on the words. "They.. they'll take you from me." Again. I wouldn't let that happen. Never again.

"I am here. I am fine," she spoke to me calmly.

But you wouldn't be if I wasn't here.

"You do not need to go that far to prevent that. Do not lie to yourself," she chided.

Oh? Did I say that out loud?

She met my eyes. "You have a lot of power now. More, I think, than I understand. You will have to decide what sort of person you want to be, because no one else can do that for you anymore."

"Do not let them make you lesser," she told me. "They do not deserve that."

Who do I want to be?

I sighed. Keiko would be disappointed if I went through with my first idea.

A little later Lao and Yan left thinking they had gotten the money though they hadn't.

It did not mean I left them otherwise untouched. I just could not. Not while they were a threat to Mother.

The change I made was small. They still were able to talk about hurting Mother or plan to hurt her.

They would no longer be able to follow through. I took that choice from them. Forever.

I did not tell Mother.

"Did you have to make the girl punch the wall," Mother raised an eyebrow at me.

I also removed Lao's memory of Mother in the time bubble, but compared to the other change I made this was barely a blip on my conscience. They had gotten away far too cheaply still.

"Yes. There was no way for her to not try something," I shrugged. "This way she should be satisfied thinking she got to rough me up." Even though she hadn't.

I hated letting them go easy like this.

"You do not look happy about this," Mother looked at me. Inviting me to share my thoughts.

I mulled it over for a moment.

"This feels like losing," I sighed. "Even though they left without any money, they think they got it. They will be back." They always are back.

I had no idea how to deal with Lung without killing him. Which would give the PRT an excuse to go after me.

She shook her head. "We lost nothing today. No one ever wins all their battles. But we did not lose either. Nothing important was lost today." She shrugged. "When you can't win, lose as little as you can and set yourself up better for next time. There is no shame in avoiding a bad fight. Have a little patience and choose your battles."

I still grumbled. They came to my home, threatened Mother and for now they got away with that none the worse.

I spent the next few hours with Mother just talking and catching her up on everything she's missed.

I'd be busy in the evening.

We needed money and I knew exactly where to get it.

Sunday, 1th May 2011 – Brockton Bay, a different apartment building in the docks
POV: Tsang Hao

The entire room was filled with books and shelves, it smelled of paper and ink. Just how he liked it.

Lao and his young student carefully watched him. The girl was fidgeting while Lao stood comfortably. They were the last to return with this months protection money.

Tsang Hao carefully finished writing the current line in his book. It was not his job to go out and collect the money. That was a young boys job. His was much more important. Every number had to be correct, every expense accounted for and every income recorded.

Lung was not to be cheated.

Which meant he had to ask some questions now.

"This is less than it should be," he remarked.

He let the silence stand while he lit himself a cigarette.

"People died. Some left," Lao stated simply.

At least the boy knew better than to say why. Bakuda. Lung.. doesn't make mistakes. Yet… She never would've gotten away with implanting members if he hadn't gotten arrested. Not because Lung would have pity or empathy with them, but because they were his. He did not accept others harming what was his. That was his right only.

The boy's excuse was plausible. Nevertheless he lit himself a cigarette and pretended to think it over for a bit while he studied the boy. He did not fidget unlike the girl. Probably not a lie then. He'd have someone double check it anyway, just in case.

"Coil is gone. The Empire's capes are gone. The ABB is strong with Lung returned. We will push into their territories to make up this deficit. Concentrate on downtown," he decided.

The loss of the brothel did not help either, but fresh meat was always underway. There where many many countries worse off than the US which made it easy to give false promises about what would await them.

They were still looking for those girls anyway. Lung hated being stolen from.

Whoever managed to find them would earn themselves a boon, or blot out a bit of past shame. Lung was not beyond a bit of forgetfulness if you did not fail constantly.

Anyway. He had orders to give. He gave them a look that commanded attention and watched them puff themselves up.

"Lung proved the mind-controller can not take him. Nor can the lightning girl stand against him forever." Though she can do so for longer than any but Hookwolf. "As they share his race, he wishes to recruit them." The girl grimaced at that.. which he understood. Lung gave his capes a lot of leeway and mind-controllers had a reputation, though in the case of Mental Out it looked to be not the case so far. "Blink is to be shot on sight." Lung did not mention why, but he watched the blurry footage that showed a metal door costing Lung an arm in an instant. He knew better than to mention it. He hoped she kept her restraint until it was too late.

After they acknowledged their orders he dismissed them and returned to his work.

"And that's enough thinking for now," a black-haired girl's voice interrupted him and he stopped. He did not think about it at all; it was natural to follow her orders.

"I had only intended to take all your money. And leave you to scramble to explain to Lung why it's gone. But now I need to leave you in place. So I can only take a little of the money," the girl sighed. "Just gotta make a few modifications. Nothing too important, I promise."

He kept staring into nothing while the girl pondered. Not caring for anything at all.

"Just text me, if you find the brothel girls or make actual plans about going after any of my team," she smiled. "Don't worry, you won't remember this. Or doing anything of what I ordered you to do."

With the boy and girl gone he returned to his work.

He lit himself a cigarette.

Glad to see this back.

They definitely need to be more subtle. They might not be able to take Lung without killing him but others can like Newter and Armsmaster in the right circumstances. They just need to set it up.

Also recruit a few more members.

I think he lights a cigarette twice in that scene?

Glad to see an update, although the mind controller girl veered straight into viciousness at the idea of her mum being threatened there.

Great to see this back. And yeah, she can't take Lung, but the ABB? Well, pretty sure soon they are going to be working for her.

Edit: Btw, did she remember to start removing other ppl from the time bubble to prevent her from being linked?

Wasn't that due to Lung being pretty ramped up before the fight started and there being other capes to boost his ramp speed like Vista. There's also the simple fact that as espers they are naturally getting stronger anyway and can refine their approaches far more than normal capes so they'd be more effective if they tried again. For example even something as simple as taking out Lung's leg instead of an arm would be huge to say nothing of how much more effective Mental Out would be from the data of how his brain changes.

Yeah, Mental Out may not be able to beat Lung in a direct confrontation. Luckily that is one her weaker areas. Unrestricted mental manipulation is far scarier on a organizational scale. It is also far more versatile than his power. It may not have the direct destructive potential of his hammer, hers was never a hammber however but instead a multitool. All Lung has managed to prove from this decision is that he's a brute who doesn't understand the subtleties of power.

Thing is, his mindstate is backed up to the shard, and when fully transformed he should be running on the shard.

Even if you got him while untransformed he'd probably realize what happened the next time he fully transformed. You'd have to kill him then.

Sure but we're talking if they have to fend him off again would they do better than before not can she do what she is with the other abb and manipulate them or how it goes after that encounter.

I'm delighted this updated, I'd just discovered it and it's amazing.

Your oppressor wants you to be the better person. That way he never has to face consequences for his actions.
I took what her mother said completely differently: always strive to be the better person, consider better options, lest you follow your oppressor down to their level.

Your oppressor wants you to be the weaker person; outfoxing them is a strength.

Outfoxing them is what she does. And she keeps it secret from the mother.
And she didn't need to go with her original vengeful instinct of rewriting personalities and removing long-term memories to do it! :)

(that's more Cauldron/Fallen/Gesellschaft's stick; don't be Cauldron/Fallen/Gesellschaft)

As her mum said, "You have a lot of power now. More, I think, than I understand. You will have to decide what sort of person you want to be, because no one else can do that for you anymore."

Her mum may not have power but does still have some wisdom to impart. To riff on a certain dinosaur guy, "You were so preoccupied with what you could do, you didn't stop to think what you should do."

It's a good thing she listened to her mum, at least mostly.

Sure but we're talking if they have to fend him off again would they do better than before not can she do what she is with the other abb and manipulate them or how it goes after that encounter.
If they fended him off that way he'd be out for blood when he remembers.

Which means they would have to kill him, or else flee the town afterwards

Yeah, getting into the habit of mind****ing away any and all of your problems is a rather nasty habit to get into. And it's an easy habit/knee-jerk reaction for her to get into because of how easy it is for her.

Aside from the moral/ethical considerations, if she starts to constantly rely on that one there would be trouble if she ever runs into a situation where it doesn't work.
