A Darker Path [Worm Fanfic]

So, who do you think is next?

I suspect Trickster will be stupid next and will try to force Atropos to help Noelle.
Guesses for fates
Trictster, Perdition, Noelle: Dead. First two of stupid, last of stupid love and loss of sanity.
Other members: Gone, rogue, or hero

Ah, that explains that. I've felt that the way she handled Damsel was a little out of character. She normally doesn't go out of her way to arrange nonlethal capture of people who ignore her warnings.

But it wasn't concern for DoD, it was a feint to get Heartbreaker to let his guard down by presenting a presumed weakness he thought he could capitalize on that would allow him easy victory.

And also improve her relationship with the PRT and heroic community a little, of course.

I "suffer" from frequent bouts of Paranomasia. Since it was explicitly mentioned, let's see how badly I can mangle this:

Heartbreaker came to town only to die from a broken heart when he found out that he bit off more than he could chew; Le Roy est morte, viva Le Regent. *(Edit: Forgot one) Not even the most egregious of bleeding hearts are likely to agonize over the results for long, rather they would be pumped full of adrenaline that such a near and dear threat is no more.* It's a victory like candy for Atropos, assorted vassals, and broken minds everywhere. Truly, a sweetheart deal that is like a fine cherry cordial, something to be cherished. If some smart-alecky person wants to whine about the lack of ceremony, I'm sure that a ticker tape parade can be organized for the victor.

Pretty clever of Taylor to set some ground rules by never operating outside the city, then deliberately provoking the worst offenders of the setting into her carefully set up killbox. I wonder how she's gonna get Mathers down, or the Blasphemies.

She most certainly does operate outside the Bay. She demonstrated this with a PRT director that would have become a problem.

Her rules are don't fuck with me or my city and I'll leave you alone…

So most threats decide to enter her killzone to test her theory. So far only one has caused her to have to leave her city to deal with an issue.

Accord realized that after her attack on his drug shipment followed by offering him the perfect deal instead of third warning she's in his office for a heart to heart, probably with an accordion.

Well that's absolutely not how I saw that encounter going, but it was highly appropriate and hilarious to boot. I'm a bit sad there won't be updates for a few weeks, but that's just me being who I am, @Ack. Still a fun way to wake up to read Atropos' various antics.

"It's a digital world," I said expansively. "Reality is what computers say it is. I just told the computers that you're transferring in, made you a victim of faulty homeschooling—which is basically true—and sent Principal Blackwell a nasty email asking her why she hasn't set up the remedial classes you absolutely require."
Hah, good one, Taylor!
"Hebert. Taylor Hebert." Every syllable slotted into place with the crisp cadence of a pump-action shotgun being racked, and with the same level of no-fucks-given. "I've been a student here since two thousand and nine." 'You ought to be able to recognise me by now' went unspoken, but not unheard.

"Yes." Taylor's tone brooked no dissent. "Your life up until now might've been even suckier than mine, but you are going to learn life skills before not having them kills you."
Pythagoras will have your soul!
"… and she's new in town, so I'm keeping an eye on her until her father shows up this afternoon," I said semi-truthfully.
And what when her father leaves the stage after that? :p

Hey, where is the (Frienemy of Dragon) -tag? :V
Also, to Director Piggot, apologies for using your private email but I figured you'd really want to know straight away. Anyways, I promise not to do it again. Unless I really have to. Or I just feel like it. You know how it goes.
Piggot's blood pressure rising.
Seriously, they made your average NRA get-together look like a bunch of pinko commie liberals.
Interesting use for Italian fashion.
I decided that she needed a proper reception, so I greeted her along with my good friend, Mr Pump Action Shotgun.

*groan*
That was horrible. Have a like.
Everyone else - Heartbreaker is absolutely going to die due to a broken heart. Mwhahahahaha.

"Are you sure?" Cherie looked dubious. "I mean, I already know how to do math. Adding, subtracting, multiplying, stuff like that. What else is there?"

"They added two and two, and accidentally ended up at four." Danny poured himself a glass then put the pitcher back in the fridge. "And nobody's planning to do anything stupid?"
Not if they value their lives.
The news footage of her confrontation with Damsel of Distress had been particularly educational; if she hesitated that long before attempting violence on him, she would be firmly his long before she chose to act.
...And what about all the other footage of her dealing with villains?
And then, to his shock, when she spoke again, it was with his voice. "Yes, it is me. Call everyone in. You all need to hear this. Place the phone on speaker."
Ah, that's how she's gonna do it.
This doesn't happen to me!
I think I hear someone's house of cards crumbling.
With a sudden vicious move, she stabbed him with the candy heart, splitting his skin and driving the sharp point deep into his chest; letting out a choked cry despite his broken jaw, he arched his back in agony. Despite the unusual nature of the murder weapon, the end came quickly. His last sight was of his daughter, watching with altogether too much satisfaction.
Straight out of a slasher movie like Chucky or Leprechaun.
Alec grinned—actually grinned—for the first time in a long time. "Gonna buy some confetti."
Heh.

Nah.
Noelle: Healed (Taylor kills her power)
Perdition (if he is still there and not sold): Ziz bomb in him killed.
Everyone afterwards: Sent back to Earth Aleph (Taylor kills the dimensional barrier between the two Earths on a small area and sends them through)

Atropos should encourage Cherie to use her power a bit at Winslow by giving the students more focus and interest on their studies, although with Greg this may need a lot more reinforcement.

Edit: This should also include the teachers and staff to be a bit more into doing their job. If they are being real teachers and the students are more focused on being students then the two will synergize making the school better for everyone.

Also, she'd only warned Damsel once. She gave Damsel her second warning with the shotgun to the back of her head. There will be no third warning.

But also, the above.

Good catch. Will fix.

Played just far enough off-key to give him an aneurysm.

Huh. The school's computer class is using a mainframe instead of individual computers? Interesting.
You can steal an individual computer. You can't steal a mainframe.

He bumped his temple with the heel of his hand as though trying to shake his thoughts loose. "Something really weird just happened. In my head. It's like … you know when you've had a bad cold and your sinuses are totally full of really gross shit, and you blow your nose and it all comes out at once, and how weird it feels after? Well, it's like that."

"Okay, first, that's a disgusting description." Lisa shook her head, trying not to think about it. "Second, any idea why it happened?"

Ok, I'm with Lisa on this one, that is a rather icky description.

On the other hand, it works. I know exactly what he's talking about. It's totally gross, but once its done you can swear you've been un-stuffed up to the point you can think better.

Pretty Please, Or Else
Side Story: Pretty Please, Or Else

This story takes place in Shardspace, but for ease of understanding, it will be translated into events happening in another place altogether (so to speak): the Shard Bar.

Lounging against the bar is a tall, handsome man. Bronzed, even. Or perhaps a beautiful woman. He is every woman's dream, and she is every man's daydream. (Gender is a little foggy in this place, or it would be if the Shard Bar were actually a place, and the people within it anything more than allegorical representations).

"Nice ambush," Emotion says to the looming, glowering cowled shard next to them. There's nothing ambiguous about Path to Ending; what you see is what you get, and if you mess with it, you deserve what you get. "But your host doesn't really understand the powers I gave my host, does she? He can't just take back what he's done to those people. It's done. They'll love him forever, even after death. She can't just End that by telling him to."

NO, says Path to Ending. THAT'S TRUE. BUT YOU CAN.

(At one time, Path to Ending's host read a series of books that she quite enjoyed. One of the characters speaks like this.)

"Sure, I could," admits Emotion. "But why would I? She's your host, not mine."

YES. SHE IS. AND SHE IS VERY GOOD AT WHAT SHE DOES. WHICH IS WHY YOU ARE GOING TO HELP HER BY ALLOWING YOUR HOST TO DO WHAT SHE WANTS HIM TO.

"I'm afraid I don't—ow!" Emotion staggers back, holding their nose. The shard equivalent of blood trickles down their face and drips off their chin. "What did you do that for?"

YOU KNOW WHY. I ASKED YOU NICELY. NOW I AM TELLING YOU. Path to Ending hefts the ornate scythe it is holding. Light gleams off the impossibly sharp blade in ways that entirely ignore the laws of whatever brand of physics holds sway in this place. WOULD YOU LIKE ME TO SHOUT?

"But … but you never asked nicely! You just told me from the start!"

Path to Ending looms over Emotion, the scythe held steadily in its bony hand. PLEASE.

The word is less of a plea than a thinly veiled threat, but Emotion doesn't want to push their luck. They decide to take the word at face value. "Okay, fine. Just this once." Reaching out along the link they share with their primary host, they grant him the power to reverse the changes he's made to all his victims.

THANK YOU. Path to Ending turns and makes as though to leave.

"Wait, is that it? Don't I get a 'sorry'? You hit me!"

Turning back just for a moment, Path to Ending tilts its skull. Light glimmers far back within the eyesockets. YOUR POINT?

All of a sudden, Emotion decides that it's better to cut their losses. Their primary host is deceased, and they've only acquired one important piece of data: don't mess with Path to Ending.

"… never mind."

THAT'S WHAT I THOUGHT.

In Shardspace, a menacing black shard drifts away from a slightly damaged-looking one, sliding back into its own fold of dimensional space.

Forcing other shards to break their own restrictions could technically be construed as cheating, but Path to Ending had never been one to follow the rules in the first place …

If hadn't stopped them where I did, we'd have a lot more dead and injured.

Hmmm, this might be the biggest plot hole so far! Can't Taylor use her powers to "End typos and other posting mistakes"?

Noelle: Healed (Taylor kills her power)
Perdition (if he is still there and not sold): Ziz bomb in him killed.

Yeah, at this point the issues are starting to be lack of targets. But considering that Noelle is eventually an Endbringer-class threat, I suppose someone with foresight (snicker) would take care of that in a timely fashion. And I suspect that Taylor will see Noelle & Co. as mostly victims, rather than evil.

Atropos should encourage Cherie to use her power a bit at Winslow by giving the students more focus and interest on their studies, although with Greg this may need a lot more reinforcement.

Heck, put a mask on Cherie (to conceal her civilian identity) and market her as the new public event heroine "Pep Rally" -- guaranteed to make your morale event or celebration or sport or concert an incredibly fun and exciting time. Be open about her powers and this could be a legitimate cash cow. (Disclaimer: warn people, allow them to stay away and avoid the powers. After word gets around and some trust rises, I can see this becoming really popular.)

Taylor will have other things to deal with.

She's keeping Cherie under wraps for the moment. Plans are in motion.

If they come to her, they're...potentially not going to do well. Taylor has been pretty clear about villains coming to her.

I'm not sure whether PtE's threat detection is precognitive vs. intent-based. The descriptions have seemed intent-based, but one could possibly argue that the intent leads to action in some futures. If it is intent-based, Noelle might not light it up at all.
