A Certain Mental Isekai (Raildex SI)

Though she is innocent for this particular crime, Chubbisaki definitely deserves being taken to task about how she treats Hokaze!

I can't wait for the continuation of this sidestory.
Misaki: "Who're you?"
Misaki: "I'm you, but cooler. Literally." *instantly ices tea with her mind*

Misaka's anger broke through her indignation- wow, she really was mad. "Take this seriously, Shokuhou!" she yelled, and added- "You've been abusing Hokaze's trust since before she even joined Tokiwadai, haven't you?!"

…What?

While perhaps that was true, Junko certainly didn't think so. "Wh- what gives you a right to say that?!" yelled Junko, truly angry all of a sudden. So loyal~! "Without her, I never would have been the esper I am today! With those migraines and headaches, I never would have even been happy! So don't you dare insult my Queen's honour like that!"

This moment of self awareness on Canon!Misaki's part made me chuckle ngl.

I think that's less self-awareness and more self-deprecation. Misaki genuinely did nothing wrong to Junko in canon unless I missed a line in late NT or GT somewhere, but given the control she had over the Ideal project at the time, she likely thinks she could have done more than she did — it's in line with her AB/MO deal of 'genuinely looks out for and cares for her clique but is a huge liar about it at all times especially to herself'.

Ironically, one of the more appealing things about ACMI is that it's... not really that different from canon Misaki in many ways. There's a different overarching focus and her masking and tastes are different, but it's a pretty believable alt!Misaki in terms of values, certain priorities, similar secret cryptid prowess and all — which is a large part of why it works as well as it does.

I agree that Misaki's comment is probably self deprecation because Misaki loves to hate herself but I was mostly referencing what Isiri Pudireach said:

May be in reference to "mindcontoling Junko so she eats more than she intended to" stuff.

I think your forgetting the whole Junko's power is calorie intensive and MisaSI needed to talk her out of making poor diet choices out of poorly founded figure concerns from a long time ago. Misaki isn't as willing to argue things out as MisaSI do to being more comfortable with mind control so she presses a button to krep junko from starving herself instead. It's more of a "Yes I do that, but this response is our of scale to what I've done" moment than self awareness or self depreciation. She's just assessing the situation.

It's not really limited to this fic, either, even in canon we see Misaki playing with her clique's memories to cover secret missions and conversations with Misaka about Academy City's Dark Side.

Kuroko: "We have to release Misaki."
Mikoto: "Do we really have to?"
Kuroko: "The crimes keep happening even when she's detained."
Mikoto: "She's a mind-controller."
Kuroko: "The person we thought was her has been seen."
Mikoto: "Are we sure it's not her?"
Uihara: "Watch this."
(insert three minute video of MisaSI walking down a street)
Mikoto: "It looks like her."
Kuroko: "But what aren't you hearing?"
Mikoto: "I dunno?"
Kuroko: "No whining noise about having to exert herself."
Mikoto: "Dammit! Alright, it's not her."
Uihara: (once again disappointed by the lack of oujo-sama)

While true this is something her clique are aware she does and more-or-less consent to in a number of cases we see — to the degree of her clique members being perfectly happy to lose a day guarding Dolly knowing that Misaki'll be wiping their memories later. She's a lot sketchier than ACMI's Misaki but that's more a product of Kamachi opting to not really engage with the standard telepathic ethics questions — her clique are every bit as loyal and it's not because she mind controlled them that way.

I mean, if we're talking about reasons why Canon!Misaki might feel like she's taking advantage of Junko...

... I think this would rank higher than messing with her diet.

Yeah I'm not sure what's going on there, that does happen in Mental Out but it's with Hokaze's consent and, indeed, suggestion. I would assume it's the same case here, I suppose?

The hiding is just generally normal, while Junko's dimly aware of parts of the Dark Side in canon due to occasionally bailing Misaki out of random assassination attempts and Astral Buddy, Misaki, like most Dark Side-adjacent characters, does her best to keep her friends out of the nastier parts — NT11 has Junko and the clique basically have to harass Misaki into letting them get involved with her showdown with Mitsuari.

Yeah, canon says the Tokiwadai girls are mostly very into being mind controlled, except for the clique leaders who are more wary/paranoid

The rest of them also pondered it for a moment- before Awatsuki gasped. "Oh!" she announced. "I just had an idea! What if we asked the Faction if Shokuhou could use Mental Out on them?"

I blinked. "Eh?"

"That does sound like a very good idea," said Hokaze approvingly. "Our Queen does need more practice using her powers actively, and it would make us much more prestigious if it were more obvious that she really is Miss Misaka's equal in power."
Their certainly eager to volunteer. One must assume the Tokiwadai pride and inherent chuuni nature of the average esper means they all find it really cool somehow to be the not so evil minions under the control of one of the seven strongest espers.

True, but remember that feeling guilty and like you're taking advantage of someone doesn't care about conforming to logic or reason. It's Misaki that thinks she's taken advantage of Junko, not some omniscient, objectively correct narrator.
