A Bright Dawn to Come (SRW/ME)

Well two of the options - Why were you teaching at the Academy, and Does Nunnaly know that you were teaching at the Academy - are very similar questions that I can probably blend together.

Red Skies at Night Part Final
Char… Char Aznable.

Edward is Char. Char is Shinku's father.

Wait, that means that Miss Sayla is Shinku's aunt.

That also means that Char Aznable… or Char Miguel on your ship.

That means that Char is married.

Good. You'd be rather upset if Shinku's father wasn't married to his mother.

Wait, Jane knows about all of this?

All the thoughts in your head spin round and round, screaming in wild unbelievable orbits like the moon around the earth. You have no idea how to process any of this, because you have so many questions.

"Question." You finally manage to utter quietly, before you rally and speak more firmly. "I have so many questions." And Edwa- And Char looks at you for a long moment before he nods.

"Of course, I can answer a few of them now, but we do both have our responsibilities. That is if you aren't planning on throwing me in the brig, but we don't have the ability to sit and talk for forever."

You nearly giggle at the sheer thought of it, but it is a more panicking laugh than anything. Throw Char in the brig? No one has ever done that. At least not that you-

No. No, that can wait until you've asked at least a few of your questions.

[X] Would you like to talk to Shinku?
[X] You wanna blow up a copy of your old mask my uncle had?
[X] Does Nunnaly knows that you teach at her school? / [X] Why were you teaching at Bright Academy?
[X] What future do you wish to see?
But now the question becomes what should you ask first? There are so many different things that you don't understand about this whole situation. How in the world is he alive? Char and Amuro Ray both disappeared during the Axis shock, so how is he here, hiding among the teachers at the Bright Academy? What happened that day, when Char nearly dropped a meteor on the Earth?

What even was the Axis Shock?

All of those are things that no one has really ever been able to answer before. Questions that no one else would be able to answer… And yet, as you stare at your former teacher - At the man that you now know is Shinku's father - you realize that there is another question. One much smaller in scope, but so much more important. Something that you have to know the answer to before anything else. "Have you told Shinku about this yet? Would you like me to organize something?"

Edward - No, this is Char. Char is quiet for a long moment, before he sighs and shakes his head. All the while waves of something melancholic and bitter rolls off of him. You… Aren't exactly sure what you are feeling. It isn't sadness or depression or anything like that, not with how frustrated it is, but it isn't anger or hate or disgust either. "I… Huh." There is a moment of silence as the worst of those feelings evaporate right off of the man.

"Now that we aren't at the Academy, I can tell him the truth." Edward's words are quiet, not aimed at you, but more a moment of realization by your former teacher. He glances back up to you, before he shakes his head. "Up until now, No. i haven't told him about who I am - Either as a father, or as to the truth of my past."

Then Edward does something that you've never seen before. He removes his sunglasses, and for the first time in the year that you've known him, you see your teacher's eyes for the very first time. "I've wanted to embrace him all year. To sit down and finally talk to my son, not as a teacher to a student, but as a father to his son since Shinku first arrived… I guess the realization of just how much things have changed over the last few days hasn't entirely managed to sink in yet."

The dry, wry chuckle is happier now, but your teacher's words only raise further questions.

"You couldn't before?" You ask, and Edward shakes his head.

"Back at the Academy, I was in something of a precarious position. When I first applied to become a teacher at the Bright Academy, I had to agree to a number of provisions. And if I broke those terms, then the Headmaster was going to have me rather publicly deported back to Zeon."

You hiss at that, recoiling from the very idea. You were a model student, you had to be in order to become the Student Council president. And that means that you know exactly what would happen if Char's survival became public knowledge.

…Oh god.

Rather, you now know what will happen when Char's survival becomes public knowledge.

There would be governments all across the Human Sphere calling for Edward's head on a platter. Body not included. "I'm guessing that hiding your identity was one of those provisions?"

"Correct." Edward confirms. "No student, nor anyone else who didn't already know my identity were allowed to know that I was anything other than Edward Suisei, survivor of the One Year War, and Combat Simulation teacher."

"But Shinku is your son. He would have already known who you are. Or at the very least, they would have guessed that." You argue, and Edward just shakes his head.

"You may be right but in this particular context, you probably aren't correct." Edward says. "The fact of the matter is that there were several teachers actively working to push me into any situation that might force me to break my agreement with the Britannian Government and the Academy. They knew who I was, and they wanted to see me before a firing squad."

"And they didn't leak the information?" You ask.

Edward only shrugs in response. "I worked long and hard to make sure that nothing of the sort happened. Not just while teaching, but at every level of my job at the Academy. My records were squeaky clean. Even so, it had been years since the One Year War. At this point the identity of Edward was well enough established that I could quit and return back to Zeon, and back to Nanai. I would have done so at the end of this year, at least until I realized that Nanai sent Shinku to the Academy. A few years more of letting my legend die down before returning home was worth the chance to see even a little of my son growing into a man."

"And then the aliens attacked."

"And then the aliens attacked. Now all my hard work at hiding away from the world for long enough for my mistakes to become history have gone to waste."

Strangely, despite what Edward is saying, he seems almost… Happy with the way that things are moving at the moment.

"I hadn't even thought about the fact that I'd be able to finally be honest with Shinku after all of this. That is a weight off my chest." He confirms, not even looking up from his glasses as he answers the question that you hadn't even thought of yet. "So, yes, Captain. If you could set up something between myself and Shinku… I would appreciate that."

You watch your teacher for a moment more, before you realize something.

An image flashes through your mind.

"Oh god." The words are soft as you drop your face into your hands. "There's a copy of your mask up in the Captain's quarters."

Edward goes still for a moment, before he finally looks up from his glasses. "I'm sorry. What?"

"You know my Uncle Tristain. You've said as much so far." You start to explain.

Edward nods. "That was back when I was working with the AEUG. Back when I was in hiding under the name of Quatro."

You have to take a single moment to just wonder how many different names your best friend's father has gone under over the years. From what you generally understand, even the name Char Aznable was not his original name.

"And from talking with Lillian, Shinku and I were able to determine that Tristain was the originally chosen captain for the Harmonia. Or whatever he would have called it. Anyways, the Captain's quarters are all fully furnished. Obnoxiously so even. But among the candles and the fake skull and the giant painting of himself, I ended up also finding a copy of your old mask."

There is a moment of silence, and you watch the way that Edward struggles with this information at first. And for good reason. Your uncle hates Newtypes. He hates Zeon. He was a Federation man through and through, to the point of betraying the AEUG for the Titans. So it almost makes no sense that he'd have a copy of Char's mask.

At least at a surface level. There has to be something more to this, but you just aren't sure what it is. Not that it really matters when you are the one that has the mask instead of him.

"I… See…" Edward is quiet as he says those words, and it makes sense. Finding out someone you hate has your… merchandise for lack of a better term would be very strange, and just trying to imagine what it would be like if you found out your uncle had a painting of you…

Urrrgh Just the thought of that is nearly enough to make you gag. Why in the world would you think of that? You shudder for a moment, before glancing over to a smirking Edward. "Shut up." You mutter, and Edward just laughs.

"I didn't say anything."

"Right. Now that I've thought of my uncle having a picture of me, want to take your old mask down to the shooting range and blow it up?" You ask.

Edward is quiet for a moment, before a grin starts to cross his face. "I think I have a better idea."

Leaning forward, he speaks to you quietly, and before long the room echoes with your laughter.

Jane won't know what she's in for. She's been a friend to Edward during his time here at the Academy, but that doesn't mean that she hasn't earned a few pranks between friends.

Once the details are ironed out, you and Edward nod to each other. Not a word of this will be spoken until the time comes.

But that isn't the end to the questions that you have. "You mentioned the Britannian government, so I'm guessing that Queen Nunally is aware of your being a teacher at the Academy? But… Why a teacher?"

Edward chuckles softly. "Yes, the queen was instrumental in making sure that all of my paperwork passed muster. If it weren't for her giving me a second chance… Then there is no way that I could have become Edward at all. As for the why… When you tried to use that damned hat, I mentioned a student of mine."

…Oh. That would have been Kamille Bidan.

"His name was Kamille, and watching him grow over the course of the Gryps War is even to this day one of my proudest achievements. Seeing him struggle and learn, adapt and grow, it made me so proud. By the end of the conflict, I wanted him to become the next leader of Zeon. Someone who had seen the worst of war, but had grown beyond its darknesses. Someone capable of letting go of hate and making decisions for the betterment of everyone around him. But then… The end of the war happened, and Kamille was ruined. All because I wasn't a good enough teacher to prevent the Souls of the Dead from overtaking him." Edward is very quiet, before he sighs, sitting back up and replacing his sunglasses.

A layer of fake calm falls over Edward like a coat, but it can't fool you. "Training Kamille taught me the joys of teaching, and losing him taught me the horrors of War in a way that I'd never been privileged enough to learn. I never want to feel that way again, I never want anyone to have to feel that horror if I can do something about it. And the best thing that I can do is help prevent the next generation from making my mistakes. Truthfully, it has been a pleasure. It's a shame that once my identity gets out that I won't be allowed to teach anymore. I honestly do enjoy it."

For all that Edward is trying to make himself come across as calm, there is a veneer of something bitter and sad seeping through all the same.

Wait… You know that Edward has been busy, and apparently having to avoid talking about his past all the same.

"Have… you spoken with Jane about the other members of the AEUG recently?" You asks, the question making Edward blink.

"No… Why?"

"Well, I ended up asking about them yesterday with her, and she mentioned how a lot of the big names are doing. Apparently Kamille is like, up and moving and not in a coma anymore." There is all the chance in the world that Edward already knows this, but on the off-chance that she doesn't.

"That… That's good." Edward says, and in that moment the veil comes down again. He's not entirely happy, but it is a good kind of sad that you feel. "I'll have to ask her for the details… That is if I'm not in the brig."

"I mean, I was tempted to ask if I could throw you in the brig for a few hours, just to have the chance to say that I did it. But I can't say that I'm planning on it. It'd be hard for my Security officer to do anything of the sort while in the brig. But before we head out, I was hoping that you might have a final answer for me."

"Oh… And what would that be?" Edward asks, as the two of you stand up.

"Well, I asked something similar to Lillian, but what do you want the future to look like?" You ask., and Edward just laughs.

"The future? Well, there is a distinct difference between what I want the future to look like, and what I think it will. I'd love to see a future where people like us were no longer needed. Where everyone could communicate, and weapons of war were something of the past. But… I know that that is naive. Even when Amuro and I could understand each other perfectly during the Axis Shock, I didn't agree with him. And he didn't agree with me."

Edward huffs. "God, this conversation has gotten all sorts of emotional. I will say this, I agree with Nunnally, that it will be possible to create a world where even if the rich and powerful have reasons to go to war with each other, those holding their weapons will be free to refuse to die for them. And Mineva has already started to find the first steps towards that future. Nothing was ever going to change so long as the Federation was filled with those who just followed orders, regardless of right or wrong. But the Federation is gone now, so I guess I have hope. But enough jabbering on. I've got interviews to plan, and I know that you are meaning to help with the freight issue this evening."

"Yeah, yeah. Fair enough." So much of your world has been turned head over heels by what you just learned, and yet at the same time… You are starting to think that you might finally understand a bit more of who Edward really is.

The funny thing is that you aren't sure that the answer to that was ever Char Aznable.

You do spend a few hours working the Freight with the engineering crew, moving things to one side as you slowly start to put together the forklifts to allow you to open up and construct the shelving units. Little by little, the freight starts to clear up. There is still work to be done, but it is closer than it was before.

As for Tomorrow… Tomorrow evening you'll finally arrive at the Sol Sphere. Those are the thoughts echoing in your head as you make your way back into your quarters. You stumble through the room, exhausted from hours of work before you collapse face first onto your bed.

Wait a second.

Grumbling you push yourself up to your feet, and toddle back into the main room of your quarters.
…Who the heck managed to get into your quarters?

Who…

Who should you thank for this?

CHOOSE 4 two (2)
[X][Day] Spend Time on the Bridge
- As the Captain, you do need to spend some time on the Bridge, you know, running your ship.
[ ][Day] Take a second shift on the Bridge
- Spending time in the Captain's chair will make it easier for you to come across as if you know what you are doing when you arrive at the Sol Sphere. In addition, you can see about trying to put your new ship through it's paces.
[ ][Day] Check in with your new Head of Security, Edward
- You need some time to really parse what you've learned about Edward.
[ ][Day] Spend Time with Shinku
- Shinku seems to be planning on spending every free hour he has tomorrow with his father. Which… Makes sense, given the fact that they can finally start to talk.
[ ][Day] Spend Time with Celeste
- For now, you should leave Celeste be. The both of you had a lot to say today, and it will take time for all of that to settle.
[ ][Day] Spend Time with Jane
- Miss Jane has always been a calming influence, someone who really gets people, and manages to handle them well. Maybe talking with her could help you figure all of this... thisness out.
[ ][Day] Spend Time with Lillian
- You don't know anything about Lillian. Hell, you don't even know her last name. If she's going to be working under you, maybe you should learn more about her.
[ ][Day] Spend time getting to know Emily
- You've chosen Emily to be your new Comms officer, in charge of handling communications with other polities and… stuff like that. Honestly, you've only met the girl like once, so it might be a good idea to get a grasp on who she is and what she is about.
[ ][Day] Ulysses Christoff, who are you?
- Your new Gunnery chief is an old soldier, who knows what he might be able to tell you if you sit down and talk with him. It is a good idea to get to know your staff after all.
[ ][Day] Morale is doing…?
- Junpei is your new morale officer, and it should be a good idea to try and see how he is handling the whole situation. He seems fine enough, but it is hard to tell with him.
[ ][Day] Get to know someone else
- Meet with one of the individuals off the Crew list on the front page.
[ ][Day] Check out the Research Labs
- You stopped by the Engine block, and you saw the Singularity drive running the engine. But there is a lot more to see in the Labs, and there might be things that you can start to work towards. Research Labs tend to research things after all.
[ ][Day] Try out the Simulator
- A seemingly full dive Simulator with artificial gravity that allows for the use of piloting any Mecha in it's database... That has got to be cool.
[ ][Day] Try out the Shooting Range
- You already gave yourself a big headache trying to use the weapons yesterday. Probably giving it a day to keep yourself from hurting yourself would be a good idea.
[ ][Day] Explore the Living Quarters
- You only barely saw the living quarters before Miss Jane drew you to the Bridge, hopefully now that things are a bit calmer you can go and see what the Living Quarters have to offer.
[ ][Day] Check in with your Chief Medical Officer
- Now that you have a Chief Medical Officer, there might be things that she needs or asks for, and keeping up with her is useful.
[ ][Day] Check in with your Chief Mechanic
- You don't know Elaina all that well, it might be a good idea to check in with her to see how she is doing, and what all she needs
[ ][Day] Install Freight Mechanisms
- You and your crew have made progress on installing the Freight mechanisms, but continuing to push through on all of that might be a good idea. One more shift of this should finish it all up.
[ ][Day] Practice with the Hat
- Heading down to the Medical hall in order to have Chakwas watch over you as you try to master the wild pirate hat that was made for your uncle. This should help you figure out how to best use it.
[ ][Day] Search for the genius who altered your uncle's painting.
- Someone managed to get into your quarters without you being informed. This is a major security breach, and something needs to be done about it. At the same time, they really improved the painting in the main room, so you might be able to overlook this a little. If they fess up.
[X][Day] Arrive at the Pluto Base
- This evening, you'll finally reach the Pluto base at the edge of the Solar System. It feels like it has been so long, but the slowest part of your journey has finally come to an end.

Hat practice is a must. As is identifying the vandal(its totally Jane's counter prank) because if someone can get into our room while we sleep its definitely Need To Know

I really hope to break this news to Slinky, we threw Char in the brig, and then let Shinku in there.

That way we have an emotional reunion AND get to say we threw Char in the brig!

We really should be on the Bridge when we arrive in Sol, that seems like the only MUST HAVE option.

Other than that, I really really really want us to have a talk with Jeff(Joker) BEFORE we get to Sol, because I do NOT want any chance of that man leaving this ship.

"Yes, the queen was instrumental in making sure that all of my paperwork passed muster. If it weren't for her giving me a second chance… Then there is no way that I could have become Edward at all.
I see Nunnaly shares her brother's talent for sneakery. She's just far better at appearing cute and unassuming than he ever was.

One of our timeslots is already consumed by that. We only get to pick two.

Yeah, Nunally is kind enough to even give Char a second chance.

Probably doesn't help that she probably saw some of her brother in Char itself considering some of Lelouch tendencies, especially once the later saw that the zero requiem was his only option left.

On the other hand, could the axis drop may have had the same objective? like in SRW there has been times that Char used the drop as a means to an end to unite humanity itself instead of just destroying the earth, following a same scheme as Lelouch so that humanity had a common enemy.

Maybe that is why those drives were in the other half.

He was never planning on destroying the planet, but was trying to unite everyone againts a common threat.

[X][Day] Spend time getting to know Emily

Emily has low morale, plus it'd be a good idea to touch base with our coms officer before making contact. Doubly so because she's a reporter, so she may be able to help prepare for any debriefing we may need to make. Press or otherwise.

[X][Day] Get to know someone else
-[X] Jeff Moreau

Because people want Jeff

As you can see, the time slot consumed by that is distinctly NOT being on the Bridge when we arrive.

As a practical matter, it's going to be awkward to resupply without the freight mechanisms. And one of our top priorities for turning this ship into a fighting unit capable of, say, supporting multiple mecha squadrons for a sustained campaign (read: more than a few battle scenarios) is going to be "being able to resupply."

Get to know these two. Wanna keep em! Important civilians. I don't imagine the pregnant Sarah will choose to stay here. And Chakwas isn't likely to leave her new domain unless a Swat team comes at her with crowbars.

The freight can be set up when we need to actually start needing to load things.

[X][Day] Check out the Research Labs
[X][Day] Search for the genius who altered your uncle's painting.

We need Getter Beams approximately the day before the Invaders showed up.

We should have a bit more time imo. Before we can resuply, we have to negotiate for said supplies. And then we will probably have to wait for those supplies to be prepared.

So... this might be wishful thinking, but what if the painting-improver was Joker? It's in his name, after all.
