Talking to Patchouli
[X] Go see Patchouli.
- [X] See if Ilya wants to come with you.

"Did you want to do something right now, Ilya?" She narrows her eyes suspiciously at you and you shrug. "Patchouli said she wanted to talk with me before I go to Mid-Childa. Now is as good a time as any, I guess, but I was wondering if you wanted to come with me?" She frowns thoughtfully and looks at Illyasviel for a moment.

"… I think I'd like to, Flan." You smile and look at her wheelchair, then at the three servants. Since you don't know where Patchouli is …. Satsuki swallows nervously and clenches her hands reflexively, and you grin and float up to pat her head.

"Don't worry, Satsuki, you don't have to come. In fact - did you ever get a list of things you wanted made? Get that done before you go to sleep, especially if you want anything to bring to Mid-Childa." She nods quickly, relieved at not having to fly.

"Yes, Flandre-sama!" She sketches a quick bow and scurries past you to head for your suite. Sella frowns unhappily as Ilya scoots forward in her seat.

"Don't worry, Sella. I'll be fine. Just go … hm. Wait for us where our beds are, okay?" You slip down and pick her up, and Sella sighs resignedly before she and Leysritt bow.

"Very well, Lady Illyasviel." You sketch a polite bow of your own before turning and carrying Ilya toward Koakuma. The familiar looks up.

"Lady Flandre? Can I help you with something?" You nod.

"Yup. Where's Patchouli?" Koakuma frowns and cocks her head to the side. After a moment she makes a sort-of-tittering sound and gestures, making a small ball of purple light appear in front of you.

"If you follow that, it should lead you to her." You grin as she bows her head and fly up after the orb as it zips away. It weaves erratically through the aisles, seemingly unable to fly in a straight line, but you notice - shortly after Ilya's surprised gasp - that when you cross from one cross-aisle to another the area of the library you're in changes. Is it because Sakuya isn't here, so Remilia and Patchouli have to shore up her dimension-altering abilities with their own magic, or are some of her defenses active? You're pretty sure that she wouldn't deliberately make it harder for you to get to her after asking you to talk …. In any case, after a few minutes of flying you reach her current sanctuary, another floating platform hidden among the bookshelves in what seems to be roughly the middle of the library. She's sitting at a desk, with a number of small bottles within reach, as well as what appears to be a large stone beer mug. She doesn't seem to notice you until you land and clear your throat, at which point she half-turns.

"Ah, Flandre … and Illyasviel. Just a moment …." She turns back to her desk and scrawls a design on the surface with her finger - it glows for a moment and a pair of comfortable chairs appear next to you. You set Ilya in one before taking the other for yourself. Patchouli takes a drink from the mug, wincing and shuddering afterward, then takes a breath and looks at you. "Flandre Scarlet, I owe you … at the very least, an explanation, and an apology." Your eyebrows both rise and you straighten up. Patchouli apologizing isn't a once-in-a-lifetime event, but usually she has to have Remilia standing over her, making sure she's sincere. The magician frowns and, after a few false starts, continues, falling back into German. "As you know, I had not intended to go to the world in which Illyasviel is a newly-made magical girl. However, once it was decided that we would be staying there and meeting Kiritsugu and Irisviel, I decided that I would take steps to ensure that … certain things changed." She hesitates, apparently uncomfortable, and takes a breath.

"Is that why you took that other Illyasviel back here?" She blinks, confused at your question, but quickly shakes her head.

"That was … something fortuitous - but my acquisition of her was not necessary. No, what I sought to change revolved around the girl calling herself Miyu Edelfelt. She needed some prodding, which I believe you provided and for which I thank you, and certain obstacles needed to be dealt with. One, I was able to defeat. The other … I had thought that you would deal with Bazett, but your loss meant that I had to deal fairly with her. Still, I'm vindictive enough to hope that she can't actually deal with Berserker properly and dies to him." You lean forward, interested.

"Bazett? That doesn't sound like a Greek name." Patchouli gives you a look and shakes her head.

"She's not Greek; she's Irish. Bazett Fraga McRemitz. Why would - oh." She chuckles and shakes her head again. "Yes, without any other information, I suppose it would be a reasonable assumption to make. In any case … was it an enjoyable fight for you? I did intend it to be as much a reward as something that furthered my own ends." She actually looks worried, and you sit back, thinking and remembering the fight.

"… I did enjoy the fight. Not so much the whole blocking my abilities without warning, but I can understand why you would do that, considering how I did. Enhancing her abilities so that she could keep up with me at full power likely would have confused her a bit too much, and she's probably no good at flying combat." Patchouli sighs, relieved, but you lean forward again, glaring. "I rather less enjoyed your attempt to goad me into attacking Illya's parents." Patchouli's expression turns, not irritated as you expect, but apologetic.

"Looking back … considering our relationship … I can understand why you acted the way you did. However, Flandre, I did not intend to humiliate you. Had you stayed here in the mansion, I would have used much the same language as I did - perhaps even harsher. And if you had attacked Kiritsugu … I do not share your and Remilia's unwavering hatred and disgust toward their actions, but I am not particularly fond of them in that world. I would simply have ensured that he survived your assault, and once you had vented your wrath I would have continued as if it had not happened." You frown and peer suspiciously at the magician. She looks like she's telling the truth, and she looks sincere …. "I do apologize, Flandre Scarlet. Not for the geas, or for what happened before we left, but while we were in that world, I would have lost nothing by explaining things, or at the very least letting my opinions on important matters be known to you, and for that I do apologize." You stare into always-soft purple eyes, and after a long moment you nod. Something like this is hard for an arrogant creature to do, especially in front of someone besides the immediately-aggrieved party, and you can at least give her acknowledgement and implicit acceptance. Whether or not you'll actually say that you accept it … you glance at Ilya.

"You had something you wanted to ask, didn't you, Ilya?" Ilya looks conflicted at the result of the conversation, but she does nod, and Patchouli tilts her head.

"Why would Illyasviel not be allowed to keep her name?" Patchouli makes a face and sighs.

"A safety precaution. In the worst case, she could be summoned as a Servant - or as a Counter Guardian, considering the particular card I used as a base to form her body. If the connection to the Throne of Heroes is strong enough for that to be a possibility, then 'erasing' her identity as Illyasviel von Einzbern will, as with my familiar and among other things, prevent her from being called away - and, more importantly, will prevent Gensokyo's Barrier and the mansion's defenses attacked. However, if I did my working correctly, there should not be enough of a connection for that to be a problem, and she would be able to keep her name." You nod - it's not something you're really familiar with, but it's something understandable. Just some magician stuff that makes things easier for her, and not something shady. Ilya frowns unhappily, though; it doesn't seem like she accepts the answer as easily as you do, even if she isn't saying anything.

Talking to Patchouli II
[X] Keep talking with Patchouli.
- [X] Ask her about Ilya's feeling of discomfort in the mansion.

You sit for a moment, thinking, and glance slyly at Ilya. "Ilya, do you think we should ask Patchouli to help you?" She blinks and Patchouli tilts her head curiously. Then Ilya realizes what you're talking about and, after a second's hesitation, nods slowly. She turns back to the magician.

"… You know that I'm a homunculus, right? That I'm … an artificial extension of nature." Patchouli nods quickly.

"You were also born, rather than created, and that has certain effects on you, namely that you are both more and less fragile as an existence compared to other homunculi." Ilya shakes her head and Patchouli frowns again.

"It's not about that. It's … when I'm inside the mansion, I can't reach nature properly. It's distorted, and it sometimes feels like it's trying to push against me - to … to squeeze me out, or something. And Sella and Leys both say they're fine, but … if I'm feeling it, they have to be as well." You reach out to hold Ilya's arm, and Patchouli … relaxes. Your eyes narrow in hostility, but she seems unaware of your tension as she leans back in her chair and drinks from her mug again. She grimaces at the contents again, but stares into the mug for several seconds before setting it down and looking up at Ilya.

"You are aware of the history of your world, correct? Although it is not quite a correct match-up, it would not be quite untrue to claim that Gensokyo is a land possessed by the Age of the Gods, rather than the Age of Man. It is … quite healthy for you. This mansion, on the other hand - it is the home of two enormously powerful vampires, countless twistings and alterations to time and space thanks to Sakuya, and my own magic that's been built up over a century. At this point, being inside the mansion is closer to being inside a Reality Marble - a world of alien common sense - than it is to simply being inside a building, even a heavily-warded one. It makes sense that your ability to link with nature is handicapped when you are inside - there is no nature for you to connect with." She pauses and coughs, then shakes her head. "Truthfully, it isn't something I had even thought of, although if you had brought it up to me earlier, I would have suggested moving you out of the mansion temporarily, until your arm and leg were restored - while unlikely, the possibility of an unfavorable interaction exists, and placing you elsewhere would help you recover as well as prevent any problems occurring in the first place. However, I don't think there is anything to worry about; Remilia wouldn't risk the safety and health of her sister's friend unless it turned out to be absolutely necessary." She smiles fondly, as if remembering something, and Ilya relaxes a little, but of course you are still worried.

"Is … is there anything you can do? To make her more comfortable, at least?" Patchouli sighs and shrugs.

"Not really, Flandre. While I am capable of opening a hole in the mansion's protections to allow her to connect with Gensokyo's nature, or modifying a portal to create a transitional area with similar benefits, the former would likely anger Remilia, and the latter would certainly attract the attention of Yukari as well. I'm sorry, but the most I can do right now is just examine Illyasviel to determine whether or not an actual problem does exist - but, again, I'm fairly certain that nothing is wrong, and it would take rather a long time to work out, given the scope and complexity of the task. It would be better to hold off and add it to the examination Alice and I will make before we begin our work. Unless you've decided to use a different source?" Ilya frowns and glances at you, then shakes her head.

"No, I'm fine with Alice's help. And I feel well enough right now, so I don't think an examination right now is needed." Ilya gives you a pointed glance; you're still worried, of course, but you can hardly force Patchouli to examine Ilya if Ilya also doesn't want to … still, there is something else you can bring up.

"And you'll also check Sella and Leysritt, too, right? Even if they haven't said anything, they should still feel it, right?"

"Yes, they will be taken care of as well," Patchouli says, nodding. She takes another drink and slowly shakes her head before, oddly, studying her palm intently. Then she curls her hand into a fist and shakes her head more firmly. "Well, I have to get back to my work, so if you will excuse me …." She trails off and starts turning back to her desk. You glance at Ilya, watching her take a deep breath. On the one hand, they both said it would be fine … on the other, Patchouli can be wrong and Ilya might not realize exactly what's going on with her. Maybe you should involve your sister? And you could see how far Sakuya got with Ilya's room, too ….

Ilya's Room
[X] Go see Remilia.
- [X] Bring Ilya.
- [X] Ask about Ilya's room.

"Ilya? Do you think you're up to another quick trip?" She frowns at you for a long moment, then puffs her cheeks, making you smile.

"I don't mind, Flan." You grin and swing around to give her a hug, carefully pulling her up as you turn back to Patchouli.

"Patchouli, do you know where my sister is?" Ilya, now properly in your arms, frowns again, probably thinking she knows what you're going to do. Patchouli tilts her head as well, and her hand sketches on the desk again. You wonder what's wrong with her - she hasn't used her own magic since you came up here, and Illyasviel said that she was acting strangely. Of course, Illyasviel doesn't really know what Patchouli's actually like, so she could be misunderstanding Patchouli's normal attitude ….

"Remilia is … in the entry hall." She sounds surprised, and she's probably curious, but if she wants to know more she can track you with magic. You float into the air and start to leave, then turn back to the magician.

"Thank you, Patchouli." Your tone is sincere and polite, but you leave before seeing if Patchouli turns or has anything to say. "It's not what you think it is, Ilya." She makes a suspicious noise.

"Hmm … how do you know what I think this is about?" You giggle and shake your head.

"I don't - all I need to do is think about what I want to ask Remilia, and then decide whether you would come up with that as a subject for discussion. Since you wouldn't, what I'm going to ask my sister isn't what you're thinking it is!" She tosses her head, flailing her hair across your face, and you catch some of it in your mouth, holding it with your lips. When she looks back to see why you aren't responding, her face turns bright red and she scrambles to rescue her hair. You giggle again as she pouts, then hum brightly as you fly through the library. She leans into you, relaxing, but you can't exactly dawdle - it wouldn't be fair to her. Soon enough you reach the entry hall and carefully open the door. The gazebo is still there, of course, and Remilia. You cock your head at the painting she's making - a ruin of a battlefield, mounds and carpets of corpses approaching a titanic black structure, so large it doesn't even fit on the canvas. Three tiers of defenses, siege weapons … even unfinished you can tell that the event portrayed would have involved many thousands of troops. It's too bad it only exists in her imagination.

"The defense of the Lady's Tower at Charm," Remilia says as she steps back. She yawns demurely. "It is rather better to create art with your hands and not with sorcery, even if magic is far more precise. No matter how perfect I make it, it never seems as alive as when I do it by hand. Good evening, Illyasviel. Come, Flandre, sit." She walks back underneath the gazebo and sits on a bench; you flick a glance at the gazebo before following suit and sitting across from her, keeping Ilya in your arms. Remilia's eyes gleam suspiciously and she taps her lips, leaning forward … memorizing the scene, of course.

"So … there was something I asked Sakuya about earlier, after we came back from Ilya's world. It was kind of an important project …." You trail off as Remilia nods, smirking sneakily. Ilya looks at you, frowning at the way you're dancing around the subject - but you don't want to spoil the surprise if it isn't finished yet.

"It's almost finished, I think - it needs a certain someone's approval, of course. A touch of life. Shall we see if it is suitable, or found wanting?" Her smile softens, her so-expressive eyes shine less brightly, but more purely.

"Flan? What is …?" You hug her more tightly as you nod to your sister.

"It's … something I wanted to do. And now it seems more important than I'd thought, so I'm really glad I asked about it. It's …." You trail off and Remilia smoothly slides to her feet; with a wave of her hand, the air next to her changes, creating a doorway to another part of the mansion. She makes a welcoming gesture, inviting you to lead the way, and you drift forward, carrying Ilya to what you hope will be a place she feels comfortable.

You arrive at the top of the stairs, looking down the hall that ends in a tall window - one that hasn't been covered up. It's a bit far from any of the doors, but …. "The window overlooks the front of the mansion; the hall ends there, but if you want access to the rest of the second floor, a doorway can be cut into the wall." Ilya goes still, apparently realizing what you're showing her. You take a few steps forward, testing out the solid stone floor and the dark red carpet that covers much of it. A few paintings adorn the walls - Berserker standing tall, strange weapon lowered; Sella and Leysritt standing shoulder-to-shoulder, almost identical as they wait calmly; you and Ilya sleeping together peacefully. Ilya sniffles and looks at the nearest door. Smoothly, as practiced as any maid or butler, Remilia glides past you and opens it for you to enter.

The room is luxurious, but sparse. Several low couches sit against two walls, one near the door and the others by the windows. A table set forms as much a centerpiece as exists in the room, although it is currently unadorned. A fireplace burns warmly to your right, and a small cabinet is on the opposite wall, next to another door. A mirror hangs above the cabinet, but the paneled walls - dark, but not oppressively so like most of the mansion, particularly with the windows - are otherwise bare. The room is largely empty, but it's not a bad compromise, and this way it's easier to see that the table could seat four copies of Berserker, and that the room is high enough for him to stretch tall and not reach the ceiling. Ilya doesn't say anything, and you carry her through the room to the other door. Unsurprisingly, it leads to the bedroom. A large canopied bed sits in the far corner to your left, and the large glass doors to the patio - large enough for Berserker to walk through them without stooping - are in the center of the wall to your right. On the same wall as the door, across from the bed, is your portrait of her, properly framed. A cabinet, a wardrobe, a dresser, and a desk all sit on one wall or another, and a small round table sits in the middle of the room. Remilia walks past you to open the door to the patio, and Ilya inhales, taking several deep breaths as she leans into you. You look at your sister, head cocked curiously, and she nods - 'nature' can enter through that door, then. It likely can't get into the rest of the mansion, and it can probably only enter the suite when the door is open judging by Ilya's reaction … but it's something that will help a lot. It's also probably why the suite is stone-based instead of wood, like the rest of the mansion. You take Ilya through the door so she can see the patio and the gardens it overlooks. After simply looking, she turns to Remilia and tries to say something, but your sister holds her hand up.

"There are a few other rooms I want you to see, first." You frown, despite Remilia's gentle tone, but Ilya swallows and nods. You follow your sister back into the suite, leaving the door outside open for now. The door nearest Ilya's leads to two more doors, splitting into Sella and Leysritt's rooms - comfortably but not lavishly furnished. The next holds the washroom, including a bath easily as large as the one in her castle. Another has a dining room, with a usable kitchen through a door in that room, which itself has a door to a storage room. Another has a large sitting room. And finally, at the end of the hallway, Remilia has Ilya place her hand on the wall and imprint a passphrase; the resulting doorway takes you to a well-stocked magical workroom. "It's underground, of course, and the physical entrance opens into the library, but it's much more convenient for you this way. It also functions to let you into the library quickly, if you want. If you want anything changed or added, or if Sella requires anything particular for the kitchen, inform Sakuya and she will see to it." Ilya nods haltingly.

"Thank you … but … why?" She seems bothered about it, for some reason, upset, and you frown worriedly at her. Remilia simply tilts her head curiously. "Why … go through all this for me?" You squeeze her tightly, reminding her that you exist, and Remilia nods.

"Because Flandre wanted you to have a room of your own, rather than have to stay out in the open in the library, or simply have you stay in a guest room. Because you deserve hospitality. Because you are Flandre's friend. Illyasviel von Einzbern, this workshop, the suite upstairs - they are yours. Whether you choose to live here with us, or if you choose to live elsewhere and visit, these rooms belong to you. You are an individual with equal standing to Patchouli - no one here can order you to do anything, no one outranks you. You are no mere guest, Illyasviel von Einzbern; as much as anyone else here, this place is your home for as long as you wish it." Ilya stares at your sister, almost in shock, then turns her head to stare at you. You smile happily and nod, give her another hug - and then her eyes fill with tears and her arm clutches your shoulder as she begins crying. You hold her close, and Remilia walks up to you, joining the hug, wings wrapping around you comfortingly … and then she withdraws, leaving you to hold Ilya in privacy, a swarm of bats silently flying through the closed door.
