Under the Open Sky (CWMGQ Spinoff)

At the rate we've been going, I doubt they'd let us fight any big guys with anything besides ranged combat.
Then we let Arc kick the shit out of them while we mow down the mooks and pop whatever nasty traps/surprises are mixed in with them and if it's still alive by next update we buy the ranged Wave Force upgrade and start wailing on it all over again.

*Shrug*

Mobs are where we get really scary with our Abilities, but our Inhuman Skill isn't as useful, though that other Ability that makes all attacks resolve individually is a god send at the same time.

Yeah, *Shrug*

The Wave Force upgrade is a huge investment.

Right now it costs nearly 2,000 EXP just for that one upgrade. Plan Upgrade doesn't get us any closer to that, and 2,000 EXP is far more than we can expect to get in one or two updates.

If we encounter a really powerful enemy, our defenses won't be what saves us. It will instead be the ability to kill them before they kill us. Or kill them before they get within range of us.

Also, that Wave Force upgrade that costs nearly 2,000 EXP? That's just to make it a ranged attack that's hard to dodge. The truly amazing upgrade costs even more after that.

To make Wave Force truly terrifying, we need to spend 1,985 EXP to get Standing Wave and then spend an additional 1,590 EXP to get Intense Wave.

That's what will let us kill big league opponents. A ranged attack that's hard to dodge, deals 100% of the target's Max Health, and prevents them from using magic for a while.

Hey, how about we just take another level of Protean and Heavy Caliber to kill big guys? That should work out just as well instead of throwing Wave Force, which would still get halved in damage by size-based defenses anyway.

We'd either need to drop Defy the Gods or a set of Aegis upgrades to get the XP for the purchases. I mean, if we're not going to be facing an MG any time soon then we could maybe drop Defy, but at the same time it's Magical Girls, they have a habit of popping up at the worst time.

[X]Plan MOB RUSH!

--[X] Something's blasting the anti-air platforms to the north.

--[X] A Giant Fire Breathing Demon Crab approaches!

Not sure what EXP plan to go for yet, but I think it might be nice to save up for Abomination or Pioneer depending on what they do.

I meant for later, and in response to the advocating for spending most of our EXP on making Wave Force ranged.

If we make changes to the plan we should probably keep Defy the Gods and scrap an aegis upgrade. If we get in over our heads then defy is what will give us a chance.

Also, it will be a while before we have 700xp again. We should probably do the massive purchase while we can, and we can work up to the second Aegis upgrade if we need it.

So over on Discord, we've been informed that each purchase of Formidable Defenses has the following effects.
  • 100 more Health per level of Aegis Field.
  • 10 more Base Resilience per level of Aegis Field.
  • Bonus Resilience based on percentage of incoming damage increases by 5%.

Here's some math about each purchase of that upgrade.

First Purchase (including Aegis Field 17->20)
  • Health: +2,300 (18% increase)
  • Base Resilience: +320 (47% increase)
  • Bonus Resilience: 15% -> 20% of incoming damage.
  • Cost: 750 EXP

Second Purchase (including Aegis Field 20->25)
  • Health: +3,500 (19.4% increase)
  • Base Resilience: +500 (33.3% increase)
  • Bonus Resilience: 20% -> 25% of incoming damage.
  • Cost: 1,310 EXP

Third Purchase (including Aegis Field 25->30)
  • Health: +4,500 (20% increase)
  • Base Resilience: +600 (28.6% increase)
  • Bonus Resilience: 25% -> 30% of incoming damage.
  • Cost: 1,560 EXP
Note that the percentage increase for the first upgrade only looks low because fewer level ups are involved (3 instead of 5). Each upgrade is less valuable than the previous upgrade.

Maybe, however each upgrade increases three separate methods of keeping ourselves alive. More heath means we're less likely to outright die from an attack or event, more resilience means we're less likely to be damaged in the first place, and the bonus resilience further increases our odds of surviving. Yes, it has a diminishing return. Every non-Divinity MG has to deal with that sooner or later. I say we just take the extra defense and be thankful it's an option in the first place.

"And what do you know about the 'whims of the Dark? You've been living protected from any discomfort your whole life and paraded out to so you can pat yourself on the back for unearned power. As for 'winning': they have already won. This whole stupid war is about how the Dark wants everyone to live with the strong destroying the weak. Guess what, that's what is happening. We're arranging ourselves to be strong and destroy them instead of living as we wanted."

seriously? oh you child soldiers have it so easy! to a girl who spent a few years as either a POW or trapped behind enemy lines. man I get that grief makes people stupid and the point they are clumsily making is valid, but fuck you for telling a prepubescent girl who's buried most of her family and spent a good chunk of her life fighting that she's sheltered.

Aside from the small increase to Health, it doesn't do jack shit against Unstoppable attacks.

Which are a huge worry for people with super high Resilience.

And until super high levels, leveling up our Super Ability is a better source of Health. And I highly doubt we'll ever get anything that high level.

To be fair the powers that be don't exactly try to emphasize those facts. Given that this universe seems to run a bit on story logic great power tends to come with great danger or trauma.

And you don't want to advertise that the army's MVPs and mascots are:
A) child soldiers
B) often orphans
C) are going to be attacked no matter what they do

Telling everybody this stuff tends for bad PR.

Yeah, and Unstoppable attacks are also super rare, to the point where I can only remember three sheets with unstoppable, and two of them are Solid Core and Summit. Resilience is still useful against literally everything without Unstoppable.

Unstoppable is just "Fuck You specifically" the Ability.

Meta wise the only reason we should ever encounter an enemy with Unstoppable is if we're not supposed to beat them anyway (and run away), jumped into a battle we really just should have known better than to not to, or the GM is throwing "Rock's Fall You Die" at us.

Nothing does jack shit against it.

Although we should try to get Adamantine in the next round or two of upgrades anyway. After some Protean levels.

[X][EXP] Plan Balance in all Things
-[X] Aegis Field 17 -> 20 - 540
-[X] Formidable Defenses - 210 XP
-[X] Shifting 7 -> 10 - 240 XP
-[X] Gating 6 -> 10 - 300 XP
-[X] Aggressive Absorption 1 -> 10 - 450 XP
-[X] Panoply 26 -> 30 - 1100 XP
-[X] Panoply lvl 25: Heavy Caliber 50 XP
-[X] Panoply lvl 30: Danmaku - 60 XP
-[X] Panoply lvl 30: Multi-caster - 60 XP
-[X] Versatility of Form - 490 XP
-[X] To Defy the Gods - 700 XP

4200 XP Spent for a fairly balanced mix of lethality and survivability. Nothing's super groundbreaking besides upgrading Aggressive Absorption to Level 10 for a shitton of spell damage and nabbing To Defy the Gods.

Aggressive Absorption is stupidly good.

Code:
FOOD!: +200 Base Damage +1200 Spellboost + (1-700 MM) +200 Light of Discovery = 1601-2300 Damage
Multicasted with a Hit by Level ability: x20 multiplier
Total Damage: 32020-46000 Damage

Here's some math about each purchase of that upgrade.
Here's some more information on this:
Currently, our No-Sell-Threshold is 800 (680/0.85)
At level 20, with a resilience of 1000 and an Aegis Barrier of 20%, that's 1250, which is a 56.25% increase.
At level 25, with a resilience of 1500 and an Aegis Barrier of 25%, that's 2000, which is a 60% increase.
At level 30, with a resilience of 2100 and an Aegis Barrier of 30%, that's 3000, which is a 66.66% increase.
And that's just the no-sell threshold. The higher Aegis Barrier's absorption is, the higher our resilience is against heavy attacks that will actually damage us.

Ok, I forget about some of those. But my point was that Unstoppable was nowhere near as common as he seemed to be painting it, and as I said, Resilience is still useful against nearly everything without Unstoppable.
Where did I ever say it was common? It's not.

Juggernaut is super common though, and still ignores huge portions of our defense unless we've got Thick Armor set as a Panoply ability.

[X] EXP Plan Upgrade

Stack defenses out of futility, will still get blasted anyway but at least people won't be able to say we didn't try.

Just smash demons, take things easier or something.
