Thinking about it, the benefit of only going to Kukaku once a week isn't the Shikai so much as it's Kukaku. Instead of being the strange academy student later showing up with the Shikai proving himself to be family, he'd be the academy student that shows up regularly, becoming part of the weekly routine that turns out to be family.

Having family Ichigo can depend on to try to do something is valuable​

It's a great offer, but I'd rather Ichigo not vanish off into the wilderness for a week or more and come back with a shikai resembling that of a disgraced noble clan. Subtle, that is not. And people would recognise something similar to the shikai of a former captain.

Prodigy doesn't get you jack shit. Histuguya is a prodigy he gets jack shit from it and he's a Captain. Like, why are we assuming prodigy means that cancels out 'punk ass we can't trust with anything important.'

Like how does this play out when it comes to mission assignments?

I'm not saying that it would go down like this.
I am saying that if you want the rigid magic samurai bureaucrats to be nice to you, then you need to follow their rules. Like sure power is great, power isn't going to make them want us to give an assignment to the human world.

...............because what matters is "cleansing Hollows and not breaking the law". Why is attaining Shikai in under 2 months (which normally takes something like 5 years and Bankai 10 iirc?) going to be a black mark? Kenpachi got made a Captain after slaughtering his predecessor in front of the whole squad after all. They care about power and ability instead of "is a good student who always follows the rules" that's even leaving aside we are allowed to skip as long as it doesn't impact our studies.
 
Kenpachi became captain of the murderhobo squad though. There it's tradition to become captain by killing the old captain.

Regarding the meditation aren't we doing that AND sparring if we train with Kukaku? And regarding the studies wasn't Ichigo consistently high ranked academically despite his spotting attendance and long "bathroom breaks"?

She clearly asked about kido and Kukaku herself a Kido Expert if we remain there as long it takes she will train us in kido and other skills. I think if we choose this option she will invite her friend Yoruichi shihōin and if he receives training from her then he will outdo all other students.

Now, the problem is that while meditation will get you in, Zangetsu's not gonna respect that. Canon Ichigo at least had some real combat experience under his belt, and if I'm recalling canon correctly the Quincy side was mucking with things as well. Here? Not so much.

Zangetsu's got his likes and dislikes, and navel gazing is definitely not in the former category.
 
So having gone and looked over the episode previews again, I think I'm going with this one:

Because to me, this reads like something said after we succeed. All the rest show us in the process of going for Shikai, this one makes the most sense after we've already gotten it.
(although I will admit that once a week sounds quite amusing.)
