Kenzō returned quickly, carrying a few more storage seals.

Kenzō paced back and forth until Shion reassured him Momoka was stable, at which point he nodded and moved to quickly search the remains of the Haru's hideout that they blew up.
@Shrooms was there anything interesting in these scrolls? Techniques, orders, etc? Maybe a Paper ninjutsu? Any explosive or other seals?

EDIT:
Kenzō said, "We got the gist of it from Sai already. Took a few fingers and toes to convince him, but he told us what he knew before he croaked. The what is clear to us at this point. The only thing left is the why."

What did Sai tell us before he died? Anything that incriminates anyone in Rain except Haru?

We miiight be able to spin this.

I can't believe nobody died.

No way we'll survive as missing-nin, though. Not with a heavily injured party member who probably can't physically travel without being carried. And certainly not without a Noburi to massively increase long-distance travel times.

So... Return to the village, try to spin this, and get sent on a suicide mission next month ?

They will straight up put us in a killbox and torch it. There's no way they can risk this ever getting out. I bet they were going to kill Haru, why else entrust this to a clanless jounin?

I say we rest up until the Mediums clear and then leave the country.

How does this chain of events work? My best guess if we do this is.

1) We tell someone else
2) Hanzou kills us and them

Or

1) We tell someone else
2) Hanzou says we're lying, kills us. Nobody cares.
I mean, the alternate path has us dying anyway so... may as well die with a little more agency.

But the idea's "maybe the person we give it to cares enough to put us under their protection".

And they do this.....out of the goodness of their heart?

How optimistic of you.
Well, they do that to get the up and coming genin that murked a jounin in their debt. It's a gamble for sure, but based on how you describe the situation already, it's better than the alternative.

Kenzō and Shion have taken a Mild and Medium Consequence. Momoka has taken a Mild, Medium, and Severe Consequence. They each earn 1 FP per Consequence accrued, and also one more for winning the fight.

Voting time! What do you do?

The next chapter will take place in Kenzō's hometown regardless. It is time to pick which direction the PCs should go.

[X] Commit to going missing. They will never accept what you've done.
[X] Commit to returning to Hidden Rain. You can swing the story in your favor and avoid being hunted like a dog.
Write-ins are accepted.
[X] Go Find Kagome-sensei

I am confident that no one with the power to seriously stand up to Hanzou (the major Clan Heads) will care about this in the slightest. Genin are a dime a dozen.

These ones killed a wounded jounin? Good for them. But I would much rather curry favor with Hanzou, so instead I will report this conversation. Good luck.

Then, not only to we look like we 100% for sure know compromising information on the regime, our first action with it was to tell someone else.

At that point Hanzou has to kill us.

I would much rather blame it all on Haru. Say he duped his team and was paid off by Leaf. Say he confessed as much before our fight. Who's to say he didn't, after all? Now Hanzou has his incident (not that he needs it).

I want to stay a rainy boy. I miss the presense of Hanzou, the true sage of the paths, so going missing is kinda boring.

Hm, seems like ninjutsu-based jounin are far worse at fighting off multiple weaker enemies than those who specialize in taijutsu/MW/RW, for the simple reason of burning through CP like crazy. Haru had 540 CP, which is a very good amount, and he still ran out against three low chuunish opponents in three turns and died from overdraw on the fourth, granted he was injured but that does not affect chakra expenditure.

In comparison an equivalent Taijutsu spec could probably have just punched us a new one easily while only spending CP on Boost+Sub, if that. Which this would have lasted Haru about thrice as many combat rounds CP-wise as it did here - and we were unable to hit him at all till he ran out.

Another observation being that having Substitution so low (30) relative to Athletics (65) is quite odd - I mean, every point in it is more or less worth half a point of Athletics unless you have no Supplementals left, and every point matters a lot because pyramid limits are a thing so unless a ninja has a better defensive jutsu it probably makes sense to keep it in at least a tertiary slot at X9? Had Haru had Sub 49 instead of 30, thats an extra +10 to dodging essentially anything for a mere 760 XP.

I agree that if we do go back to Rain (which seems like maybe the better option given unlike the world of MfD we don't have a Mari equivalent to guide us and keep us safe). We should go back with a lie that accomplishes Hanzo's goals. That'll both give him what he wants and signals that we're willing to play by the village's rules (so please don't kill us).

THEN at that point we should try to immediately ingratiate ourselves with various powerful groups / individuals. (Without revealing our duplicity). For instance I forgot who but the one genin that has already been approached by a clan should probably seek shelter under their wings.

An equivalent Taijutsu spec would have had the same rolls against one target at a time and would have had worse results in the same circumstances Haru had. Your comparison only holds if it assumes the Taijutsu spec magically gets better rolls for free.

The gap was large enough we did not hit Haru even once so it did not end up particularly mattering that ninjutsu hits harder/potentially multiple targets at a time, only that he'd exhausted his chakra in 3-4 rounds and couldn't continue, instead of being able to go for 10+ rounds.

Also, melee builds tend to need less XP for the same capstone level because they dont need to invest into a dozen ninjutsu and a double-cost CP stat (plus maybe TH, we wouldn't know if Haru had it). Further, counterattacking in melee with Taij/MW instead of Athletics dodging is a thing, too. Ninjutsu are very varied obviously, so its not a clear-cut comparison, but I do think that in general the comparison holds, and the non-general cases go both ways, such as Shadow Clone + Taijutsu being a very good combination, if you can afford the steep CP cost.

For what its worth I think Haru should have tried to run away here, certainly after he injured Momoka, no way we were catching him if he did.
On a separate note...I wonder if Elemental Clones and the like can be made to work with Taijutsu and such.

[X] Action Plan: Marked for Death
  • Discuss our situation
    • If this leaks it will be an international crisis.
    • If Hanzou is willing to kill Rain civilians to manufacture an international incident he's willing to kill some clanless genin
    • Our only protector was just killed.
    • We need to go missing if we want to live.
    • We cannot breathe a word of this around anyone from Kenzou's village -- it puts their lives at risk.
    • Our cover story is almost entirely the truth, we found enemy infiltrators in Sarobetsu, Jun was killed and we are resting up to heal. Tell everyone we plan to return to Rain after Momoka is healed.
  • Head to Kenzou's hometown
    • Rest and recover from our wounds
    • Kenzou can spend some time with his dad/girlfriend, he probably won't see them again....
    • Spend some time clearing out chakra beasts for the village
    • Kenzou can learn some smithing when he has the chance
    • Momoka can help build walls/buildings with MEW
    • Shion can help out with her medical skills
  • Consult Jun's intel to see where we should go next.

    • After the Mediums are recovered, and Momoka is fit for travel, head to Rain.
  • Interrogation
    • Insist on reporting to Hanzou himself only. If this does not fly, give as few details as possible before escalating up the chain of command as far as practicable.
    • During the interrogation, do not make any suppositions, report the facts only.
    • Demand to see Hanzou again.
    • When we do end up getting an audience with Hanzou, make an impassioned plea that we're worth more alive than dead to Rain
      • We understand that sometimes leaders need to do distasteful things for their people.
      • We still think we're more valuable to Rain alive than dead. We will do anything for this village.
        • We can continue to serve in this war doing WHATEVER is necessary for Rain.
      • We could have gotten away clean in the aftermath, but chose to report back, knowing that we might be silenced. Because we love this village so much.
      • We understand the need for tightly held secrecy here and we will do whatever is necessary to keep it, even die.
    • If asked why we hunted Haru down, say that we thought he would hunt us down after he picked up our trail. It was him or us.
    • If he does decide to kill us, salute Rain as he does it.

[x] Travel to village, hang out for approximately a few hours, do first aid and fucking decompress

[X] contemplate makeouts
[X] update shipping charts in light of latest events
[X] discuss whether Jun and Haru qualified as toxic and/or old man yaoi

Cant wait for the reveal that that dude was entirely sane and just had the "Creates ghost of most skilled opponent recently killed" bloodline.

Luckily we killed him so he unlocked the uh

checks Naruto worldbuilding notes

gyroscopic (yeah let's go with that) version of his bloodline and now haunts us.

Pure stonks, well foreshadowed.
