Finding the Spark (Pathfinder 1E Quest)

Arc 10: Post 5: Forewarned is Forearmed New
Forewarned is Forearmed

22th of Kuthona 4707 A.R. (Absalom Reckoning)

Lo that sword shall be answered by sword
And of the Bell in Flower word with word
Ware that they know what lies on western road
The bronze still bright lies not in hidden lode

Divination: 1d100 = 68 (Success)
Eutropia Anticipated Diplomacy: 29, 43 (???)

These are the words you hear in your dreams when you look into the pendant, surrounded by flashes of wings and sails... and strangest of all, Iolda and what looks like more of her Bellflower fellows/

Perturbed, you take this to Eutropia whose expression darkens.

"Those bastards... why would they? What does that have to do with it?"

The bearded guard looks you over with the sort of expression that makes it clear he has given some thought to cutting you down where you stand to keep his mistress' secrets before finally deciding that you are trustworthy enough to hear his answer. "Perhaps they fear a war with House Thrune more than with Qadira. The more fool they, but fools can be dangerous."

"They are not going to go to war over a few dead slavers, that would be madness..."

"For what is the House of Basri known above all other things?"

"For establishing peace after the Even-Tongued Rebellion..." she trails off. "So they don't want to put me on the throne, but they do not want the High Strategos to succeed either. Are... are they playing for a Green succession while spying on their best candidate? I've heard of people outsmarting themselves, but this is gambling with themselves, loosing their shirt, pants, and small-clothes."

"Pardon, but why would they fear that you would cause war with Cheliax?" your curiosity gets the better of you, leaning against the windowsill but no longer able to pretend you are looking out it.

"Because of my patron, a foe avowed to the Hells and all its works and servants, and one suspects in a more immediate sense because they discovered by hand in supporting the Bronze Dragon Sonthonax in his raids of Chelish slavers." She sighs and looks down at her hands, priceless rings atop sword callouses. "I don't suppose it would mean much to you, but I might as well tell you enough to know why you must be silent rather than hoping command alone will bind one who is a stranger to Taldor. I would much rather there be no war once I ascend to the Lion Throne, but if I must trade away the peace to get the support of land hungry nobles or an army desirous of glory I would rather it be against slaving devil worshipers hanging on by their fingertips to power than the Gateway of Kelesh which Taldor in its days of glory could not overcome. So in that sense I suppose House Basri have judged me aright, but now the question becomes how much do they know about by draconic dealings...?"

"Sonthonax... I heard that name before, in prophecy. There was a wedding of the sea folk Azarketi, which if it took place would lead to them not coming to the aid of the surface dwellers, a war with Andoran which they might have lost. I saw a burning eagle."

"Damned divination, no offense meant," she motions to you and Bjorn with one sweep of her hand. Judging from the latter's snort this isn't the first time she had said that in frustration.

"Depending on what they have on me and if they have the means to bring it to my father's attention, House Basri might be able to force a stalemate or at least think they can. Tell me, master Akorian, how would you Ghosts feel about going to visit the estate a touch early?"

"Meaning...?" you ask, weary of yet more entanglements.

"I'd like you to rob his office before I show up to arrest Lord Basri, preferably to find whatever he's using to speak to agents in Opara. He would need to have some in order to deliver documents about my involvement with anti-Chelish profiteering before I can carry out justice for his crimes."

What do you say?

OOC: Good thought on the divination... but it does mean that Eutropia now gets to reward good work with the offer of more work. At the very least you know she's good for a reward.

House Basri sucks. Like seriously, these people...

@DragonParadox, can you elaborate on how they interpreted the Divination's inclusion of Iolda and the Bellflower? I'm slightly confused there.

Well, in for a penny, in for a pound. Thankfully we haven't wasted our buffs yet, so we're still mostly fresh minus a bit of Mythic power and a few spells.

[X] Agree to one more job, it's even for a good cause

Remember when you tried to hire Iolda and she tried to hire you back in Augustana? Kori now suspects she was working with the dragon hence why she felt she had the resources.
Ah, I see.

She chose the wrong patron. Understandably, of course, but she could have joined up with us, gone on adventures, and gotten filthy stinking rich. 'Laugh at the Dragon's hoard' rich. The Bellflower Network would have appreciated her charity, I imagine.

Oh well, her loss and our gain.

I like that we can just do this.

There's no feeling that this is a minor issue we shouldn't spend screentime on.

Just a little more questing, in a timeframe that doesn't really matter to our other commitments.

I mean... we did offer our services to the Princess in exchange for more work...

[X] Agree to one more job, it's even for a good cause

Seriously though, we are becoming more spies than adventurers lately, lol.

This doesn't need to be a combat mission. In fact, it should be a dedicated stealth job. Slip in, get the evidence, then slip out undetected, with no one ever realizing we were there.

I'm thinking we only send in Cob and Kori's Shadow Projection, with the rest of the party remaining behind. Cob can leave Shoffe with the group to facilitate two-way telepathic communication, and Sirim can possess Kori's body while he's gone so his meatsuit won't just be lying around.

Cob and Kori make for a good team to do this kind of job. Cob is already ridiculously stealthy, but he has a couple psychic powers he can use to make him even more sneaky.

Chameleon – d20PFSRD

And

Chameleon (boosted with 6 PP for a +13 total) for the straight long duration Stealth bonus, and Minor Metamorphosis to render Cob Tiny-sized. Being Tiny will get him another +5 bonus to Stealth. Between those two, his Stealth bonus will be +41. And that's without using an Invisibility spell. He will actually be more difficult to spot that most people who are using an Invisibility spell.

Cob can also Shadow Teleport into hidden or hard to reach spaces, or use the ability to escape. Kori's Shadow isn't as stealthy as Cob, but it's still very sneaky and he can use Invisibility as needed. He'll also be Incorporeal, for added ninja utility, while acting as magical support for Cob.

Is there anything preventing from the people involved in Marrionette Possession from casually swapping who's directing the body?

I'm thinking that we send in Cob, and Sirim comes along in Cob's body to provide additional spell-casting/Wild Arcana for unforeseen issues, and a second mind by which to attempt spellcraft checks.

Do we have time before this op for someone to run and buy two scrolls of Dimension door? Kori's ability that works like the Divination spell takes him hour, so I'm unclear if we've cast the 10min/level buffs yet. I like to think (well, I'm hoping) that we ran the divination before casting any buffs.

My plan, assuming we havn't buffed: We buy three scrolls of DD. One for this, one to study, and one backup.

Also, Mina throws out Hermean Potentials.
Cob, Sirim (in Cob's body, he's there to provide skillchecks (spellcraft) and take over if we need an arcane spell. He can pop out if violence occurs) and Shadow-Kori all go to break in.
Shoffe, Gorok, Mina with Kori's "having a nap" body are all nearby ready to Dimension Door[1] in if things go pear-shaped (Kori readies an action to return to his body rather than fighting for that turn).

If we have buffed and don't have time to buy scrolls, we ask Eutropia if she has one in her stash, and failing that Mina can Wild Arcana Dimension Door.

-----
[1] I don't know how DD works with psicrystals and familiars. Can Mina bring Pepper 'for free' because he's her familiar? If she can, can she also bring Shoffe 'for free' or would that require Cob to be present?

We haven't buffed yet. The plan only called for that before we left to head for the estate.

Marionette Possession can be ended at will as a Standard Action, which would return control of the host body to it's owner, but I would prefer to leave Sirim with Kori's body so he isn't helpless during the mission.

We don't need to plan to Dimension Door, though. If things go bad, Kori and Cob should just evacuate. Kori's Shadow can just pass through the walls and Cob can Teleport away. Getting into a fight defeats the purpose of sneaking in for the evidence.

Can Mina cast (Mythic) Heroism on Shadow-Kori?
We should set up one or two areas of shadow/darkness for Cob to be able to teleport to maybe, and also drop Hermean Potentials on Cob (and Kori if we can)

Edit: We should cast flight on Cob, too. Probably from Sirim, to spread out the surge point expenditures.

Edit: Totally unrelated, but I'd like to buy a PoSK of Lucky Number for Kori; as he levels up, his first level spell slots become less valuable, so casting this on a number of party members at the start of the day might be worthwhile.
If we're lucky.
Edit 3:
Stone Shield would be worth getting on Kori's actual spell list, too.

She could, but I'm not sure if she should. Kori will have a +30 Stealth bonus with his Cloak of Darkness active, and that's before Mythic Invisibility is applied.

Probably better to save those Heroism spells in case combat breaks out after Eutropia confronts House Basri. If we do use it, though, Cob needs it more than Kori, since he'll actually be physically present. If Kori's Shadow is destroyed, he just returns to his body, which will then need to be healed.

It wouldn't hurt to cast Hermean Potential on them, though the timing might be tight since it's a relatively short duration. Better to have her put one in Cob's ring so he can use it as necessary. Kori can just cast it on himself as needed.

There should be plenty of places in the manor that are sufficiently dark for Cob to teleport to, if needed. Closets, behind tapestries, under or inside furniture, etc. He's going to be Tiny-sized when he sneaks in, so he'll be able to fit just about anywhere a Barbie doll could squeeze into. I would still have Kori place Deeper Darkness on one of Cob's daggers, though. That spell has a huge AoE. If Cob needs emergency coverage, he can pull it out of his bag and plunge the entire area into supernatural darkness, which he can now navigate easily thanks to his new armor.

Instead of casting Fly on Cob, we should just make sure he has the Potion of Fly we've been holding onto for a while now. If he needs it, he can drink the potion to gain the effect, and if he doesn't, he can save it for another time. Cob has a +16 Acrobatics bonus, which he can increase to +18 while maintaining Psionic Focus for Jumping purposes, or increase to +26 if he expends his Psionic Focus for a bigger jump. He also has a decent Climb bonus; only +8 at Small-sized, but that changes to +16 at Tiny-sized because DEX becomes the relevant Climb attribute for him at that size. He also has the Slippers of Spider Climbing. Basically, Cob is a super ninja Goblin. It's a good idea to have the Fly spell available if needed, but I don't expect it to be necessary.

Rather than one of Cob's daggers we want to keep, how about a rock that is worthless? If Cob needs to carry it, he can just pick it up.
Something that's a free action to drop from a container.

We can Extend Spell Herman Potential if we want to save a ring slot? Or do both? Or multiple castings (Kori can cast it as a level 3 spell via Shadow Enchantment, and Mina can (Pearl of Power) drop two castings into a ring)
Since the spell is expended on the first roll(s) a person makes rather than when they choose.

Would Arcane Sight be any good for Cob to use? Or should he just use Cloak of the Hedge Mage (Divination) for the free Detect Magic?

Edit: Can Kori cast spells in Shadow Form?

Lucky Number isn't terrible, but I would never consider learning it if PoSK weren't an option. That makes it more viable, IMO. Rather than casting it at the start of the day, however, it would be better to use leftover spell slots at the end of the day. With a 24 hour duration, the spells would then be available all through the next day and Kori would still have his slots if needed.

Stone Shield is pretty nice. The environmental requirements to use it can be annoying, though. That's one of the reasons I didn't suggest it previously. It's still worth considering, though, since as you said, his 1st level slots are less important now and we are in suitable environments to use it more often than not.

Unfortunately, there is a problem with learning it. Kori has already learned all the 1st level spells he is ever going to have. If we want him to learn Stone Shield, he would need to retrain something. The only real option there is Protection from Evil. Honesty, though, PfE is obsolete for him now that everyone has PfE rings and he can duplicate it or a Magic Circle Against Evil with Inspired Spell in an emergency. Retraining PfE for Stone Shield at 8th level makes sense, IMO.

We could put the Deeper Darkness on a rock or something else disposable. I was just thinking dagger because he could draw it from his bag and immediately have a weapon in hand, plus he could throw it and embed it in a target, such as an object or person, and basically trap them in supernatural darkness without allowing a saving throw. Cob has lots of mundane daggers. Either way works for me.

Unfortunately, we can't Extend any more spells today. That's my fault. I had us put three Extended buffs on Sirim before he spoke with the priestess, because I wanted to make sure he would have them available if she made us wait to speak with her. You know the old power play of making people wait by pretending to be busy. It's a classic for a reason.

Having it in the ring as a backup for Cob to use, along with one cast on him before he starts the mission is a good idea. The first will smooth his access, and the second one can be used if needed later on.

Arcane Sight would not be helpful for Cob. He doesn't have the necessary skills to interpret the information it provides, and worse, it makes your eyes glow blue. Not good for sneaking around. Detect Magic from his Cloak of the Hedge Wizard will be plenty for him to spot magical auras, plus he can use its Detect Secret Doors spell once he reaches the office to look for hidden compartments and spaces.

Kori can cast spells as a Shadow, but he can't cast any which have Material components. Fortunately, Oracles don't need to use a Divine Focus for a lot of their spells like Clerics and Druids do, so most of Kori's spells are available when he is a Shadow.

Nah, that meeting was the BIG THING we really didn't want to risk failing. Extending those spells was the right choice with the information available.

Putting the spell on a dagger is better than a rock, as long as it's disposable. :)

with land in Taldor and Andoran, i figure Gorok's tribe can establish 2 settlements and monopolise a trade route. Even the Church of Abadar can't say no to that and grant the Tribe a loan right?

Might be getting ahead of myself, but I went ahead and wrote out the infiltration prep plan for Cob and Kori.

Imagine a knee high, ninja mini-Goblin sneaking into your house with his Shadowghost buddy along for the ride. Both of them are so hard to spot as to be effectively Invisible before the Invisibility spells were cast on them. They can teleport or just float through your walls, see and avoid or disarm all of your defenses, and at a moment's notice plunge your home into impenetrable darkness. Nothing is safe within.

[] Shadowrunning for a Good Cause
-[] Cob and Kori will infiltrate House Basri's manor in an attempt to acquire the evidence Eutropia needs to accomplish her goals. Any information she has available on the layout of the manor (or that a local who may be familiar with it knows, such as the governor) would be helpful before they set out.
--[] Kori will use his Shadow Projection power to accompany Cob on the mission, taking advantage of its Incorporeal nature and enhanced stealth, to provide magical support for the mission. Before he and Cob set out, he will cast Deeper Darkness on a random pebble found on the ground nearby, which Cob can then store in his Handy Haversack for later use. He will activate his Cloak of Darkness ability to raise his Stealth bonus to +30 (+34 in Dim light, +26 in Bright light) and cast Mythic Invisibility on himself and Cob before attempting to enter the manor.
-[] Cob will use his Chameleon power, augmented with 6 Power Points to raise the Stealth bonus it provides to +13. Before he attempts to enter the manor, he also uses his Minor Metamorphosis power to shrink down to Tiny-size (increasing his DEX by +2 and his Stealth bonus by another +4). Between the two effects, his Stealth bonus will increase to +46. He will wear his Cloak of the Hedge Wizard and Slippers of Spider Climbing, and make sure he has our Potion of Fly readily available in case he needs to take to the air. He clears the Divine Favor spell from his Ring of Spell Storing to make room for Mina's spell. Shoffe stays behind with the rest of the group to facilitate telepathic communication between them and Cob.
-[] Mina will cast Hermean Potential into Cob's ring to go with the Invisibility spell already there. Before they depart, she will also use her and Gorok's 1st level Pearls of Power to cast Hermean Potential spells on Cob and Kori, then casts her Pass Without Trace SLA on everyone. She will use her 2nd level Pearl of Power to recover her See Invisibility spell, place it in her own Ring of Spell Storing, then allow Cob to use it to cast the spell on himself before he departs.
-[] Pepper casts Mage Armor on Cob.
-[] Sirim uses Wild Arcana to cast a Greater Magic Aura spell on Cob to completely hide all of the magic auras from his buffs and gear, and casts Marionette Possession to possess Kori's body while he is using his Shadow Projection.

Arc 10: Post 6: Beneath Still Waters New
Beneath Still Waters

22th of Kuthona 4707 A.R. (Absalom Reckoning)

Among the wealthiest and most esteemed houses in Cassomir were those who could trace their lineage back to the founding of the city, the perches of their dwellings atop the low hills of the city proper guarded with all the tenacity of an eagle within its nest. Even when their fortunes ran dry they would sooner pry the gems from the pummel of dueling swords, replace silks with linens, and silver with tin rather than give up the land upon which even the most creaking abode now rested. Thus the House of Basri, relative newcomers to the rarefied heights of Taldan aristocracy, which is to say only older than most other Avistani realms and not all of them, had to make due with the marshy soil beyond the city walls. However, centuries of landscaping had shaped the tangled mangroves and brackish waters of the Bladwood Swamp into an altogether more appealing picture of pale walkways and clear ponds whence lily pads floated to the songs of 'blackbird,' 'wren,' and the more familiar croaks of Warty's smaller kin.

The hues of trees, shrubs, and flowers are brighter perhaps than it aught to be in the month named for grim Zon-Kuthon, enough that one suspects a touch of illusion magic to enhance what sun and wind had given. Oddly enough, there seemed to be something of a family outing, a picnic as Pisca calls them, set up under the open sky. If the folks smiling and laughing, clinking glasses, and picking out buns and cheeses from the baskets know about the doings of their lord than they most be the most skillful actors in all the land.

For his part, Cob pays less attention to the 'longshanks' in fancy dress and more to the fact that the gardeners had allowed a spiral of green to climb up the façade of the main house, skipping whole floors of dining rooms, wining rooms, and who knows what else to get to the heights to which so many noble folks are drawn. Something about being able to survey all their domain, mayhaps.

Not that any of you really need the help to get to a window; Cob can translocate, Mina can fly, loaning out the spell if she must, though one must consider none of these would be skills unknown to the ones who raised these walls, not to mention those who dwell inside them. The last such estate had fey eyes and ghostly trouble, after all. What would this one hold?

Sirim had argued that at least one of the people going in should be able to both recognize and break magical effects. A wand will do when there's no mage at hand, but it had no wit to know what to break and what to leave be. Gorok resolved to be part of the break-in, a sword to hand should swords be needed. Granted, you're not wholly unfamiliar with the concept, but as they say in Andoran, 'you can't hold a candle' to the iruxi.

When you had parted Eutropia had explained that she prefer that no one know anything was taken, the better to surprise the Basri patriarch with the news of his treachery, but should it come to blows she vowed to deal with any legal trouble that may cause. Given that she did so in the company of a newly revived drow alchemist, you are inclined to believe she's willing to tolerate quite a bit of trouble, though that's not to say her request that you not kill anyone unnecessarily rings false. Much as her thoughts on war with Cheliax, the heir apparent of Taldor would rather have peace for all she is willing to wage strife if she must.

What path do you take and who do you send?

[] The lower path, will allow the party to spy on the picnicking nobles, but it will require that you pass through the most heavily trafficked part of the estate before you can get to the lord's study
-[] Write in party composition

[] The upper way, by vine or by window start at the second floor, faster but having to deal with whatever protections the builders set up to guard against window entry
-[] Write in party composition

[] Write in

OOC: Enjoy

Okay, plan updated to take into account what we learned in this chapter.

@DragonParadox, how adamant is Gorok about coming along? I want to try to convince him that it is better if he stays behind, since this isn't a mission where we expect or want to fight at all. If discovered, Cob and Kori can just flee rather than fight their way out.

It would be much more difficult to bring him along and he would be far more likely to be discovered than just Cob and Kori on their own.

[X] Shadowrunning for a Good Cause
-[X] Cob and Kori will infiltrate House Basri's manor, with Pepper riding along in Cob's Handy Haversack and peaking out of it to examine wards and magical auras when necessary. Between the three of them, they can enter unseen, do what needs to be done, and depart without anyone ever knowing they were there.
--[X] They will first approach the manor using the upper path, flying by spell or innate power, in order to closely examine what protections it might possess before deciding on whether to make entry from there or to do so through the more highly trafficked areas. They will pay special attention to chimneys which might leave an easy path into the manor, open windows, etc., defeating the manor's protections might not be necessary if the inhabitants have been lax in basic security.
--[X] The rest of the party waits nearby, ready to provide a distraction or attempt a rescue if things go wrong, or even to teleport directly to the manor should that prove necessary. Even if the manor is warded against teleportation, the grounds themselves likely are not. Gorok is sneaky, but the more people we take on this mission, the more difficult it will be and the more likely we will be discovered and forced to fight our way out. Sirim will make the argument to that effect to convince him.
-[X] Preparations
--[X] Kori will use his Shadow Projection power to accompany Cob on the mission, taking advantage of its Incorporeal nature and enhanced stealth, to provide magical support for the mission.

He will wear his Cloak of the Hedge Wizard and Sirim's Jaunt Boots, and make sure he has our Potion of Fly readily available in case he needs to take to the air after Mina's spell elapses. He clears the Divine Favor spell from his Ring of Spell Storing to make room for Mina's spell. Shoffe stays behind with the rest of the group to facilitate telepathic communication between them and Cob. Just in case he is discovered, Cob will make sure to change his appearance to that of a Liminal Sprite. They are known to be mischievous but not malicious, and it would not be a surprise if one took up residence beneath the eaves of the manor.
--[X] Mina will cast Hermean Potential into Cob's ring to go with the Invisibility spell already there. Before they depart, she will use Wild Arcana to cast Fly on Cob, then use her and Gorok's 1st level Pearls of Power to cast Hermean Potential spells on Cob and Kori, and her Pass Without Trace SLA on everyone. She will use her 2nd level Pearl of Power to recover her See Invisibility spell, place it in her own Ring of Spell Storing, then allow Cob to use it to cast the spell on himself before he departs.
--[X] Pepper uses Figment's Fluidity to change his both of his Evolution points to Skilled (Knowledge Arcana & Spellcraft). He casts Mage Armor on himself and Cob before they depart.
--[X] Sirim uses Wild Arcana to cast a Greater Magic Aura spell on Cob to completely hide all of the magic auras from his buffs and gear, and casts Marionette Possession to possess Kori's body while he is using his Shadow Projection.

I assumed we'd be in the city. This makes things easier and harder.

@DragonParadox what are the rules for bringing familiars/psivrystals along for Dimension Door - do they count as creatures and take up 'slots' or can we take them for "free"
If they do take up 'slots';
1. would it be possible for Pepper and Shoffe to be ready to dive into a bag of holding if the infiltrators get caught?
2. can they get themselves out again or do they need to be let out?

Having read the update, the more I want Sirim to be there too. I'm assuming that with Marionette Possession, Sirim and Cob will be able to switch freely, so Cob can lockpick and sneak, and Sirim can cast spells.

They count as a being for the purposes of Dim Door since they can take actions they are just a person that counts as 'also being the caster'. So Mina's magic thinks there are two Minas, one of them is a cat :V
  1. Yes that works
  2. Also works, they can take actions and have enough ability at manipulation to open a bag

-[X] Cob will use his Chameleon power, augmented with 6 Power Points to raise the Stealth bonus it provides to +13.
-[X] Mina and Gorok with Kori's body will hide close enough to the house that Mina can Dimension Door the three of them to any point within it via Wild Arcana. Shoffe is ready to dive into a Bag of Holding if she needs to teleport in. [Intention is for Kori to return to his body the instant it appears. Alternatively, Kori's body can be kept in the Bad of Looting for the duration, left open so the air is always fresh].
-[X] Mina will cast Hermean Potential into Cob's ring to go with the Invisibility spell already there.
-[X] Pepper casts Mage Armor on Cob and Sirim.
-[X] Sirim uses Wild Arcana to cast a Greater Magic Aura spell on Cob to completely hide all of the magic auras from his buffs and gear, and casts Marionette Possession to possess Cob's body.
