Finding the Spark (Pathfinder 1E Quest)

@DragonParadox, could Gorok learn the Evolved Companion feat, despite not having a Charisma of 13? It seems like a weird and arbitrary prerequisite when none of the classes that get Animal Companions have Charisma as a primary or even secondary attribute.

Or better yet, could Warty select it as a feat himself? IIRC, he was the product of experimentation that ended up with him growing to Large-sized unlike regular Slurks. Being able to adapt or change somewhat afterward wouldn't be too unusual.

I don't want to try to get anything weird for Warty, like tentacles or a tail stinger. I'm just trying to figure out a way to get him more natural attacks besides his one bite attack. With a 1 point Evolution, he could gain two claw attacks to go with it. Being an Animal Companion with only one attack is really limiting in combat.

Gorok could take it, I do think it has to be him though, it's meant to be a feat cost to the main character.

That's cool.

If Gorok retrains Harvest Parts into Boon Companion and learns Evolved Companion when he levels up, Warty will become a true Battle Toad, especially with his new adamantine armor and tusk caps.

  • [X] Have Pepper get a sniff of this
-[X] Kori uses Shadow Enchantment to cast Bestow Insight (Perception) on Pepper when he tries to discern scents in the room.
-[X] Mina will use a Scrying scroll to search for Sir Pisca as soon as the palace staff find a suitable mirror to serve as a focus for the spell.
-[X] Cob will use his cloak's Detect Secret Doors power to check the library for hidden entrances, as well as the nearby chambers, and its Detect Magic spell to look for magic auras along with Sirim. He will also examine the open window from the inside and the outside, looking for evidence to determine if it was opened by magical or mundane means.

Arc 9 Post 71: Scent and Silver
Scent and Silver

19th of Kuthona 4707 A.R. (Absalom Reckoning)

Pepper wanders around the room like 'a caged lion', or at least that's how the governor describes him, in an attempt you suspect to lighten a moon turned grim, but the cat stops here and there, jumps on furnishings, stretches and claws at the embroidery, such that you would think it ordinary feline mischief, if that is he didn't keep looking back to Mina and Sirim by turn. Finally he proclaims: "Pisca and Saenar's scent vanishes, the other never was."

"What do you...?" the guard starts to ask, but the princess cuts him off.

"The ward against scent of bird and beast and eye of man, 'tis green magic, the kind all too common at the court of elven-folk. You said the one who tried to intimidate the pathfinder had a lion? There you have it, a touch of nature magic and knight and alchemist are both gone. Can you tell us when the smells vanish? How old the most recent sniff is?"

"Alas, your Highness, I an but a humble feline, not Cayden Cailean's Thunder," the scoff didn't sound all that humble. "All I can say is that some parts of this chamber are touched by their scent, as you would expect, and others are clean as if the staff had passed through with buckets and suds, only I can't smell that either "

"Mayhap a verse will tell what mortal senses cannot," the princess looks up at her head bodyguard, who tips his head towards the window and the storm, perhaps to ask her if she is sure she wants to get into this. "A citizen of the realm is missing presumed taken by stealth into the hands of a foreign power. I will get them back one way or the other." The words are grim, lacking in the bravado they could all too easily have held.

"Ah... the mirror is here." The governor sounds odd as the pair of servants arrive, sweating a little under the weight of the silver bound mirror covered in a thin patina of dust. An unwelcome reminder perhaps.

Mina too notices, but she has work to do. With her right hand she wipes away the dust and in her left she holds the scroll, slowly chanting the names of stars brightest in the sky, the wanderers who see all from their perch, the knowledge seeping into you mind unbidden. You do not have long to ponder...

Pepper Perception: 1d20+8+6 (Bestow Insight) = 22 (???)
Mina Scry vs Nondetection: 1d20+6 = 26 (Critical Success)

Shadows swim over the glass like ink stains to show a cramped underground chamber, the packed earth barely held back by a collection of rotten boards and crumbling brickwork. Crude markings eat into the wall, marks of suffering and violence, though some seemed to have been defaced as though by the claw of some great beast. Pica lies in the dirt, stripped of his armor, slumbering but otherwise unharmed as a pair of elves perch gracefully on some of the larger stones. One has hair as white as snow, held back by a silver circlet above his brow, while the other is garbed as a knight in plate which flows like water over her.

Quite apart from their seeming ease in such a place, the elves argue in their own tongue, which Mina translates.

"The white haired one is saying they should just slit his throat and throw his body at the... beasts, monsters, it doesn't really translate well. The humans are making this too complicated again. The warrior seems more philosophical, says the Swallowtail is making trouble for the humans. Then the mage asks her sarcastically why she's even here and she says..."

The princess picks up the translation tartly. "Someone has to keep the Emperor from learning of the Court of Blood or he'll sell slaves by the thousands for weapons against the easterners and the rabble. I think she means Qadira and either Andoran or Galt. Not great respecters of human nobility, these elves, though we might have guesses from kidnapping an imperial knight."

"But why?" Gorok asks, leaning closer to the mirror as though trying to force its narrow field of view to shift by sheer force of will.

"The elves, or I should say Kyonin, think we are foolish children who broke the world," the princess explains. "The fact that House Thrune seem hell-bent on doing so again hasn't really helped the case for mankind to be sure."

"Your highness..." the governor starts, almost chiding.

"I can either laugh or weep at the fact that we are looking at a major diplomatic incident precipitated by the diplomats of House Basri, Governor Bozbeyli," the retorts tartly.

The warrior elf frees a large sword from her back and starts to clean it as she asks something.

"She is asking what they should do with Pisca's sword, concerned it might be intelligent, the other, the mage, assures her it's not," Mina continues to translate. "I think they're planning to stage his death."

"Underground... the Locker," you conclude, the glyphs on the wall now coming into focus, lamashan markings. They plan to frame the hive with Pisca's death, and one assumes Saenar's as well, though they might have killed him already. It's not like the lantern bearers would want the Taldan authorities to get their hands in drow, alive or dead.

"Well Bjron, it looks like we have somewhere to be," the princess says with a growing smile.

"We?" the guard asks with enough emphasis to make a lesser soul wilt.

"I can hardly ask the governor to send guards into the middle of this mess, qho knows how deep they are. Are there even any in Cassomir who can track that deep? More to the point, it will do my reputation a great deal more good than harm to get my hands dirty."

What, if anything, do you say?

[] Offer the Ghosts to go into the Locker and retrieve Pisca as well as Saenar if he's still alive

[] Suggest that the princess squeeze House Basri for more information

[] Write in

OOC: Enjoy.

That was a good place for a crit.

Did we recognize enough of the area to navigate there without too much trouble, or will we have to search through the Locker blindly?

You are going to need some other means of navigation, all you saw are the demon runes down there and the fact that it looks like a hole. No one here is familiar enough with the locker to make a roll to recognize a particular part of it.

So, that sounds difficult.

We can't track them directly, due to the anti-scent spell. At least not without excellent rolls, I fear?
We don't have the level for Find the Path or other high-end options to go there, just because we have seen the location.
Nobody among us has Teleport, yet.

I guess we can go into the Locker and rely on Find Object or Find Person to try it, but those aren't very far-ranged compared to the size the area can be, and they don't show the way, so even if we know Pisca's sword is somewhere below us, it won't help much in finding the way in a system of caves and tunnels.

@DragonParadox
Can the princess or governor contribute something here?
It feels like we won't have the days needed to properly scout out an unknown area of the upper Darklands.

Does the Princess suggest she will descend to the Locker with us? I assume we are going to bail Sir Pisca regardless.

Perhaps she could be of more use extorting the elves and pressuring House Basri into calling them off, though it remains in question how much good it would do the captives. If elves are contacted, they will kill Saenar immediately should they find anyone knows of this. They will probably return Pisca, once they learn their plot to stage his death failed.

We have our Divination unspent, and we know, from the results of the previous Divination, that we would find the Lamashan Hive if we followed the tunnels Captain Scorpio escaped through.

First instinct is to scry-and-die, and ask for replacement teleports to be made available.
(I'm assuming we can teleport in? I think we'd need to use greater teleport to be safe, though)
Our current knowledge of the location -> "Viewed once is a place that you have seen once, possibly using magic such as scrying."
Second, the princess wants to come with. I look at her and I see tank. But also... target.

@DragonParadox, I know that we normally we'd write in "if then" statements into our plan, but, does the princess have the means of meaningfully contributing to a fight without breaking Invisibility? As in, can we ask her now before making the vote?

----
[If she can contribute while under invisibility, I'd like to use Mythic Invisibility on her. For one reason: Kori looks to the guard; "I have a special knack with the spell Inviliblity. Does it look different to your True Sight than regular invisibility?
Nobody among us has Teleport, yet.
We have Teleport and Greater Teleport

They can rustle up some mages who can cast find the path, the problem is none of those want to go into the darklands so you would have a limited number of castings. Otherwise if you guys have any ideas for what you want the authority of the local nobility to be aimed at don't hesitate to suggest.

We have the scroll, and the idea occured to me, but I think we need to understand where the place is on the map, at least approximately. We'd need some additional info to specify the location.

Can anyone with a better grasp on rules comment on this?

I don't think we do:
From Teleport:
"Familiarity: "Very familiar" is a place where you have been very often and where you feel at home. "Studied carefully" is a place you know well, either because you can currently physically see it or you've been there often. "Seen casually" is a place that you have seen more than once but with which you are not very familiar. "Viewed once" is a place that you have seen once, possibly using magic such as scrying."

There's a table with mishap chances, and Viewed once has a 25% chance of mishap.

Greater Teleport:

"This spell functions like teleport, except that there is no range limit and there is no chance you arrive off target. In addition, you need not have seen the destination, but in that case you must have at least a reliable description of the place to which you are teleporting. If you attempt to teleport with insufficient information (or with misleading information), you disappear and simply reappear in your original location. Interplanar travel is not possible."

So Greater Teleport can get us there, and it's on the Witch and Wizard spell lists.

We can definitely Teleport in if we spend a scroll, but at minimal CL, there is a sharp limit to how many people we can bring.

Also chance of a misshap.

Not really, though he can hit very very hard against a flat footed opponent so... hopefully kill them in one hit.

Not with the Greater Teleport scroll. I know that we said we'd do this for free, but I'm happy with leveraging the princess being here to get it replaced.

I'm also ok with someone spending a round to let people out of a bag of holding. Maybe the Princess under Mythic Invisibility can do so? There's no way that she'd be allowed into the bag by the guard, and it's a vital task.
Maybe we can have those teleporting in all being invisible teleport in, and if we're lucky we'll not be caught by see invisibility or the like, and the rest leave from the bag?

Also, we should have someone quickly get some quick-to-put on magic armour for Pisca (so it refits to fit him) and a weapons/shield that fits his fighting style while we're preparing?
And if we have a few minuted to do that, then we can also have invisibility potions be brought, rather than expend spell slots? Since we'd only need one round of invisibility on the people not in the bag.
We should also get more scrolls of Reduce Person to get Pisca out of there, and our alchemist too, if he's not dead. If he's head we can just put him in a bag/carry him.

GT: Caster + 1 medium/3 CL, at CL 14 is a total of 5 people, one of which must be Sirim or Mina.

Huh? Sorry, I mean the princess who wants to come with us, not Cob. As in, can she drop meaningful in-combat buffs on her allies and do other stuff that won't break invisibility, or in order to be useful would she have to attack/defbuff foes?

Then we have our party. Mina, Kori, Gorok, Sirim Marionette-possessing one of them (doesn't count towards the limit), Cob-in-a-sack (doesn't count towards the limit), Bjorn, Eutropia.

Why CL14, though?

Very nice result on that Scrying spell, Mina.

We have a Type II Bag of Holding now, y'all. That has a 500 pound carrying capacity. With a Greater Teleport scroll we can bring 5 people, plus at least a few more in the Bag. Sirim can ride in the Bag, too, since he doesn't take up any physical space worth mentioning. Cob takes up very little space as well.

I think we should do that.

Our party, plus the princess and a few of her guards is manageable, IMO.

Sirim can ride in the Bag, too, since he doesn't take up any physical space worth mentioning.
Can he be put in the bag at all, though? Since he is incorporeal?

I vaguely remember something along the lines of "you can't store what you can't hold". Teleportation never came up before, but I didn't think much of it since we had Marionette Possession in reserve.

This is a technicality, but since Saenar received official documents (forged, and proclaiming him an elf, but still!), is he considered a citizen of the Taldan Empire as well? A foolish thing to worry about, perhaps, in light of several violations of written and unwritten law that brought us here, but is it within her purview to demand his release as well?

Greater Teleport is a level 7 witch/wizard spell, and I'm taking that to mean that our scroll is CL 14, the minum caster level.

@Goldfish, I wonder how many people can get out of a bag at once? It might make sense to give the people teleporting down a bag each, or use whatever is the right amount for one person in a bag.

I'm thinking "Readied action, when you arrive via teleport arrives, let the person in your bag out"?

@DragonParadox
1. Did we get the vibe that they are in a room or a tunnel?

I ask because if it's got a tunnel entrance, a Deeper Darkness might be useful to stop any guards posted outside seeing our attack, at least until they get into 20 ft range (because of continual flame). Basically it'll stop archers from taking full attacks at us for the first round, and force any other elves that might be in the area to get close before they can attack/launch spells.

2. How many people can leave a bag of holding per round?
2.a. If it's one person per round, if the bag is turned inside out, does everyone fall prone, or do they land on their feet?
2.b. If people do fall prone if it's Sirim and Cob in one bag, and the bag is turned inside out (and they're expecting this), does that mean that we can get both of them out of their bag in one action. I ask because Sirim has perfect flight, and Cob's crazy good at reflect/balancing/acrobatics.
[note, if it's am acrobatics skill check, then Cob can get +10, iirc]

-----
Assault-timing outline:
Get potions of invisibility and reduce person.

5 people teleport down invisibility (two must be Princess + Guard, since they'd never trust going into a Bag). These five have readied actions to let the other party members out of the bags of holding.
The rest of the party are in the bags, but they went in with their Continual Flame lockets open, and one is holding a rock of Deeper Darkness.

That means that as soon as they are let out of the bags, the DD shell (with an inside of light) takes effect.
[Cob uses his Deeper Darkness-sight armour]
