Arc 8 Post 47: Wonderings and Whispers
Wonderings and Whispers

8th of Neth 4707 A.R. (Absalom Reckoning)

One of the little known problems of killing one's employer is that it becomes a little unclear who is in charge of what. You, your companions, and Gorok's tribesmen make for very little fuss in that regard, but when it comes to the dwarfs and sellswords things get rather 'dicey' as the Taldan tongue turns, a word derived not from the throw of the bones, but from the varied things that can get diced. Everyone is rather well-armed and having been party to treachery once they seem to worry about it more.

They should just do as I do and worry about it all the time... You hide a smile behind the turn of your cloak. That is not entirely true of course, you trust your companions through pit and hellfire, but really, even a child should be able to do the sums here. Without the sellswords it would be hard to keep watch over the adamantine all the way back to civilization, without the dwarfs it's about as useful as a particularly cramped and heavy shelter, and without Gorok's Ghosts, the name had even caught on in Fusil somehow, the whole adventure might have ended in ice-cold dragon's breath.

From what you can gather, none of your traveling companions understand just what it is you had traded Sylestrix since the entire conversation had taken place without a word spoken, but the favored theories are that you had either been working with her from the start or that one of you, most often Mina, possesses some secret skill of dragon-speech.

Slowly you turn the silvery flask around in your hand. Once these were as common place as a copper's canteen or a box of flint and steel, not something everyone had, but that most citizens of the High Realm who might want them could afford. Now they are rare and precious things that might be set behind glass in testament to a legacy not even half understood. The spectacles were far more specialized, still bearing the broken mask rune of the City of the Faceless. They had been made to deal with inmates of arcane puissance, at least according to Sylestrix, and they must have been the personal possession of one of the survivors in those last desperate moments, which would imply that at least one of them was an officer. Given the prism that you left with them perhaps even a mage, though perhaps and mayhap can chase each other forever unless and until you find them and... And what? Ask them where you can find more remnants, more shards ground down almost to dust by the passage of ages?

"You seem troubled?" Sirim's thoughts reach out to you, barely touching. He wouldn't be offended by silence, you know.

"Wondering if we just left the greatest prize behind to be carried out of all our reach," you admit.

"Beyond our present reach," he corrects and when he feels your disbelief at the words he shakes his head at it. "You were never formally trained in the arcane, none of you were save I, so you do not grasp how swift, downright... meteoric your rise has been."

You chuckle at the jest, he does not make them often, but still you cannot help but wonder if you are again in the position of choosing the safe path over the secret and sublime: a adamantine carrier over the cooling trail of the ancients.

"I have spoken to the dragon, therefore in time I may speak to her again, even over the vast gulf between here and face of the moon," the mage says with unwavering confidence as you come to the edge of a clearing.

No, not a clearing. Even your vague understanding of forests makes it clear this is no natural place, the soil had been hurled up in great waves and the trees bent and broken. There, in the center, are eight cylinders of purple hued metal unblemished by wind, sun, and rain. Hollow as they are you rather pity the horses of having to carry the weight.

Obviously it's more than the soil that had been disturbed. You catch the word 'bedrock' more than once in Urgor's increasingly irate complaints, but the most important part is the timetable, a day and a half, maybe two. Thankfully Gavhaul's sleeping bag allows you to sleep through the worst of the day without the sound of dwarvish picks waking you... though something else does.

"Psst, Kori," Cob whispers from the other side. "Think ken you do a future reading for me?"

"What for?" you ask sleepily. It's not that bright out anymore.

"Wanna try out the crystal thing, see what it does."

One imagines your face is rather shocked as it pops out of the silken cocoon.

"Mina and Sirim don't know what it is, so I'll try it out."

"It might be dangerous to experiment with," you point out, collecting yourself.

"Might be dangerous to drag it with us too," he points out. "We don't know what it does just sitting there, or who might be after it. Mina and Siri..." Something tells you the shade would not be amused by the shortening of his name, "say they don't know any wizard who uses that kind of magic or where to find 'em. Poke it now or it gets poked later when it falls off the back of the cart, probably because the horse made it fall on purpose," he finishes with a grumble that does nothing to hide the shine in his eyes.

OOC: If he had failed the roll Cob would have just tried poking it on his own, as is he came to you and you can try to convince him otherwise. Don't worry about the curse, you are not trying to change his attitude with diplomacy, just argue for a course of action. That said if you want him to never poke it you are going to have to come up with a pretty good argument. It's shinny as all hell.

@DragonParadox, what device is it that Cob wants to poke? I didn't see any reference to the crystal thing Cov mentioned in this chapter. Was it among the adamantine cylinders, or are we talking about the crystal staff Gavhaul left behind?

It's quite possibly psionic, so not usable for us.
But if it can explode, a Goblin will find a way to make it so.

[x] Agree to Cob's plan

Sirim does not know any psionics to ask, so that means no help from the Pathfinders. Apart from maybe the people from the moon - as I think psionics were a bit more common back then, I'm drawing a blank.

As it is, Cobs asking for a prophecy on how dangerous it is to experiment, not asking to poke it.
If the prophecy's vague then I'll vote against poking, and if it seems safe I'll vote to buff Cob to the maximum.

But what if it explodes in a way that gives Cob some sort of 'psionic initiate' feat? :p

I guess it can't hurt to at least check with a Divination first. Cob did go about it the right way, so we should encourage that sort of forward thinking.

Let's not kid ourselves about the potential safety of poking a psionic device without any hint of psionic skills.

But I welcome any advances in that direction. If incentives are sufficient, then the risks may be deemed worthwhile, and I hope for the prophecy to bring us one such incentive.

We have two days to entertain ourselves while the dwarves dig. Let's use them!

This was not commented on, but I think it's important. I was hoping to get Sylestrix as a contact when it comes to Azlanti artefacts. Should we find something to elevate us above 'mortal hands' that shouldn't meddle with remnants of ancient empires, I would like to know her mission and the ways we might assist her with it.

There are several distress beacons we are aware of, and now that we know about demonic infiltrators it might come to a race (depending on whether these sites have something important in them). Seeing how they are too far apart for us to get to all of them, it might make sense to share their locations with an ally, hoping to deny them to our enemies at least. We'll have to see for ourselves once we get into one of them.

Nothing wrong with divining it to see if Cob's idea has merit or not, and he asked us first so he deserves the chance.

Arc 8 Post 48: Of Minds and Meaning
Of Minds and Meaning

8th of Neth 4707 A.R. (Absalom Reckoning)

The camp is mostly quiet, only the distant call of birds as nameless to you as the stars in the sky breaks it, though the sight of torches bobbing regularly up and down too far to gleam their heat but not their light marks the guards set against fey, bandits, and lingering demons. No one calls out to you and Cob in the dark for they assume, rightly or wrongly, that you know what you're doing. Unchanged and just as strange, the device of brass and flame gleams in distant moonlight, cold as the night air.

What is to be if Cob has his way with this thing?

Round and round its axis the pennant turns, and in the edges blurred you start to see. Instinctively you reach for the tool your friend hands you, a chisel this time, and carve and carve and carve upon a stone flattered by chance to serve now as your writing slate.

The Serpent sees the farthest,
For it can shed its eyes,
Set them rolling down the hill and far away.
The Cat sees what is darkest,
For from the path of dreams he cannot stray
The Wolf welp sees what's wildest,
For through the mist he' s yet to rise.

What worth the moments when great things are done?
What worth the times where heroes are sung?
These questions many have asked.
Yet few mortals have been tasked,
With pondering the weight of silent hours,
Of things which have not been done,
Beware which from the mind fear scours.

Fourteen verses, the most you've written in a trance and yet perhaps the most obtuse. The second stanza counsels against giving in to fear, so that much at least Cob should be glad for. But what of the first though? Who is the Cat, the Serpent, and the Wolf? 'Pepper' would serve as an easy answer to the first, but the last snake you've seen has been without a head in Oka's drawer and you doubt it had seen anything, given the lack of a head. As to wolves... Cold sweat runs down your spine as you consider the spirit servants of Lamashtu, but they are gone and those who raised them far away.

Stumped, you read the whole thing to Cob whose eyes brighten in recognition almost at once: "Wolf welp, not wolf, means Goblin. Welps of Hero Gods who were wolves before they were goblins. Only one goblin around here," the taps his chest. "So I... go up through fog. That sounds like good omen, right?"
Automatic Writing (DC 10): 1d100: 21 (Success)
Akorian Knowledge (Religion) (DC 17): 1d20 +1 = 11 (Failure)
Cob Knowledge (Religion) (DC 15): 1d20 +2 = 19 (Success)

"Well..." you temporize. "It's not a death omen at least." As assurances go it's not one you'd find very reassuring, but your friend seems content enough to hear it, eyes drawn to the device again. Should he... The risks seem great to hang upon so obscure a verse. Perhaps you'll find someone to understand the worth of the thing, to take it off your hands for gold, or else explain its workings.

What does Akorian think Cob should do?

[] Go ahead, the verses did counsel against fear

[] Step away, it's not worth the risk. Of all people, you know that rising can be just as dangerous as falling, depending on what's above

[] Write in

OOC: The rhyme is kind of messy, but I think it's in a way that makes sense for stream of consciousness/mystical riddle.

Untrained Use Psionic Device, which means Magical Klutz does not apply.
Okay, so we're not using full Magic/Psionics transparency. That's good to know. Also means we're probably even less likely to find anyone who can identify that crystal staff Gavhaul left behind.

So what do y'all think? I'm paranoid about this sort of stuff, so I'm inclined to not risk it. If we do, however, we can at least try to mitigate some of the risk to Cob.

Against my better judgement...

[X] Go ahead, the verses did counsel against fear, but we won't jump into this blindly.
-[X] Gorok will prepare an Unbreakable Heart spell to cast on Cob before he attempts to meddle with the device.
-[X] Mina will cast Heroism and Hermean Potential spells on Cob. She will also be ready to use her Fortune Hex on him, if necessary.
-[X] Kori will cast Protection from Evil and Guidance on Cob.
-[X] Sirim will use Shadow Enchantment to cast Moment of Greatness on Cob and everyone else present.
-[X] Sirim, Mina, and Kori will all be ready to cast Dispel Magic on the device or any unusual effects it generates when Cob messes with it.

Not sure if I want to go through with this or not, but here's a good plan to use if we do.

Beware which from the mind fear scours.
This line reads... strange to me.
So what does fear scour from the mind, and how might that [removed thing] be dangerous?

Fear narrows one's perspective/thinking, can inhibit lateral approaches to problems, and shortens one's awareness of future outcomes to the intimidate.
So in this instance, thinking longterm/broadly/laterally is what is dangerous?

----
I... I want to try this. But first I want to run it by Sirim, Mina, Pepper and Gorok, and if they can't see anything dire in the prophecy/make a compelling argument against it; then apply every single buff. Skill and save buffs & rerolls. (Edit: do we have any specific items that can boost his checks/saves?)

But also I want to ask Sylestrix for her perspective, in terms of flattery and for setting the foundations for later asking to do a maximum-buffed knowledge check on the mind-core[1], and the hyper-slim possibility of us getting answers from that jerk-ghost-cyclops, if the grudge match goes as I hope.[2]

"Mighty one, though you are unfamiliar with psionics as a discipline, might we consult with you (with a fee for your time of course)? - Your perspective from elder days might have the seeds of insight to help make this endeavor safer."

-----
[1] Just a "working together to uncover mysteries" type thing, even if nothing comes of her assistance (which I expect), my hope is that she'll be more likely to let us poke the mind-core later.

[2] I was thinking on it, and there's no way that we're gonna let that ghost go if it manages to kill Sylestrix, we're gonna beat the shit out of it and spend the next few days trying to figure out a way of getting rid of it permanently.

Also, we're strongly motivated to interfere if it looks like she's about to die: She intends to hunt and kill demons, and we value the good outcomes of her surviving to do that over her dying to a grudge match.

Proposal: Her and jerk-ghost agree to fight solo until one is brought down to 10% (20%? 25%?) health and the other is declared the winner and gets... bragging rights?

Then we all talk things out and figure out the best path forward. And also learn why he was calloing Kori brother, "why it was a shame to kill a seer", and also help identify the rest of the loot.

@DragonParadox Can multiple Hermean Potential castings stack?
If not, can we have a readied action from someone to cast a new one as soon as Cob uses the first one up? I'm thinking of Cob having to make multiple checks/saves in rapid succession.
(N.b. Not Mina, as she needs to be ready to use her Fortune hex)

  1. No the spell does not stack with itself
  2. Also no unfortunately. In this system you can use a readied action to move just before someone, say hit a fighter with a spell as they are coming into hit you, but you cannot say 'I hit him as he is wounding me'. Someone has to be moving first for the purposes of varying spells and effects.
