You're the Queen - Now What? [CK2ish Character-Focused Quest]

How much support would we be talking, at a guess?
Well, that would be part ofthe negotiations. But likely 750-1,000 soldiers sent to South Zarsim for a reasonable length of time at least, and a not insignificant diversion of dureks from the monthly surplus (but even 5 dureks is 'not insignificant' after all)

…As something of an aside I'd like to say a few things regarding my thoughts on things:
1. An okay ruler in peacetime beats a good ruler in war.
Why? Because it's too often a good general wins lots of wars, but then ends up having to outrun the consequences of his own actions, or passing such a burden onto his heirs.
Heirs that, in the classic complaint about monarchy, are simply not as capable as he was, much less capable of fighting those battles and winning out.
Meanwhile, an okay ruler in peace can simply reap the benefits of peace and the slow trickle of innovation, and be confident that so long as he keeps on top of things that he won't leave his descendants or the world with more problems then they had.

With that in mind, Regara and Essinya are both out.

Regara wants to prove herself a good war ruler. And she might be! But conquest takes time and effort to establish something that will hold and that's already our position, thanks to the Syrokis thing that just went down. Doubling down increases the risks in number and severity.
Esseniya has the problem that to make her comfy we'd have to set the Golden Throne Knights to being honor bound to rip Halrun a new one for the misstep. It's not her, it's our kingdom being intolerant, which is a shame but while I'll keep my eyes out for a way to at least get a diluted form of her culture accepted in Helen I don't want to break the local taboo against Necromancy.
So that leaves four suitors.
Janera. The ah, benevolent scholar, the 'alidor' choice as I have dubbed her for when I can't get her name right. The 'safe' option, so to speak, good-all rounder but won't flip the table.
Logan? Lorgar? Elf Prince.
He offers Elf stuff, be it archers and skirmishes that can pick apart Mordak even if they've not had an Aigncourt level victory in some time.
This, is my 'screw Mordak!' Pick, and close to being my perferred option frankly.
Prince Bardly Spoon from the richboi kingdom is alright. Sets up Halrin as the sword his kingdom funds to make Mordak and other scary things go away. He's okay I guess.
Last is King slow to come, who I have no real idea but the fact he is slow to come might make him a great option…Or he's of same quality as the others and just biffed his 'show up on time' roll. Dunno yet.

But that re-hash aside a part of me was wondering: who would take Regara's Alliance plans?
Richboi says no, she's still Mordak, and all he can offer is money. Which would be like waving bacon under a dog's nose, it'd give her more ability to become a problem down the line if she wants that.
Ja-something is willing to se what she can do to help but she's no war person, so her help is scant in practice.
Lorgar is on-board with stuffing Mordaks with arrows, but trusting Regara is easier said than done. Only helps if Vanessa or someone else signs off on it.
And Essenya is the only one who can proactively say yes and make a deal, because Necromancy OP!

Thoughts?
  • In elaborate diplomatic language, Selissa was basically entitled to, at least once per ten years, all but order Halrun to declare war on Morvak. This wasn't quite what the relevant section of the treaty said, but in practice, that was what it meant, and if Halrun didn't comply, Selissa effectively did have the right to pull out of the treaty under the claim that Halrun was not meeting treaty obligations. Which would hurt Halrun's international standing and likely make Selissan banks raise their rates significantly.
Mutual offense against Morvak. If either nation attacked Morvak, the other was honor bound to declare war on Morvak, unless already at war with a third party. (Arandel had just barely managed to get that clause added in, pointing out that Halrun did have other potentially hostile neighbors)
If you want to avoid marrying someone, that would force us to go to war, then I do want to point out, that with the current terms, if we marry either Lothar or Janera, then we will likely end up at war with Morvak.

[ ] Keep Gaius Rodela as a potential suitor
[ ] Take the offer of a treaty that gives most of what Halrun could want without a marriage
  • Halrun was to officially recognize the North Zarsim side of the Zar Civil War as the legitimate one, and pledge financial, military and political support to North Zarsim. (There were no specified amounts here, but if Halrun openly pledged support, it needed to back that support up somewhat, or it would lose credibility)
Recognition of the independence of South Zarsim openly, and quiet recognition that South Zarsim was within Morvak's orbit, even if nominally independent. (Arandel suspected Morvak didn't want military or financial support to South Zarsim to keep King Gaius dependent on them)
I do not feel like marrying Gauis would be a good idea, mostly because it would be a distant marriage, but I will also point out that if we decide to help South Zarsim, then we will likely annoy both Morvak and Selissa which can be seen on the current terms for marriage, and it would likely be important to consider how helping South Zarsim will fit into our foreign policy in general.

I want to help this guy, but I don't think it would be a good marriage.

He will be the one that got away!

The earnest hottie who respects us, from afar!

Yeah. This. Because if he sticks around in the running and we decide to not marry him it's the worst of both worlds. Unless we were deliberately trying to bait him into wasting time here so north Zarsim could try and gain the time to reverse things.

The other side to that coin is that it. Ignoring whether we could get a friendly south (whole?) Zarsim through supporting them when it seems like Morvak is actually scaling down their own support we could be the ones to gain an ally, even without the marraige. The flip side to that unfortunately, is that while the south enjoys independence from Morvak, they also have a number of ties to them, so the end of the war might in fact result in Zarsim aiding Morvak.

Zarsim could be reliable if married, but there are better offers and more powerful figures on the table.

I'd have liked a third option. I don't like how this is phrased as 'take the treaty'. Though Vanessa should be smart enough to not immediately commit to anything. On the other hand, I actually think that, in a vacuum, sending an expeditionary force to support South Zarsim could be useful in seeing Morvakian tactics and organisation. As well as ensuring our military remains capable.

I like the guy and when he wins his war I would love to be friends... But we owe our Kingdom better than to marry in exchange for a deal we can get without marriage. If it was true love or something that would be a different matter, but this guy just seems like someone we wouldn't mind, not someone we have fallen for at first sight.

There will be negotiations as to what the treaty exactly says, it's not like he's handing Vanessa a treaty pre-written for her to sign.

Fun fact, completely forgot to apply all this. Doing it now.

Gaius Suitor Vote
Is it possible that not keeping him as a marriage candidat would be seen as a bad sign by bank for loans ?

If he was one of like, two candidates and you were rejecting him, maybe, but you have 4 open candidates for your hand (with Regara still being a secret option, she doesn't count), the bankers are still expecting you'll accept one of them soon enough. Between the good faith you've made in paying down your debts and the movement on marriage, the international banking community is favorably disposed to you right now.
