[X] Interfere and go stop whatever is happening

yeah, I think the risk of letting the warp ritual go off might well be greater than the risk of trying to escape the chaos army. We should also try to learn something about this mysterious third party.

*sighs* So be it. The vote is very reluctantly changed.

[X] Interfere and go stop whatever is happening

It can only be hoped that this course of action is not cause for rather immediate regret.

On a more general point, surrendering the initiative to your (potential) enemies is generally inadvisable.

We can't be confident that running away will protect us from whatever the consequences are of whatever ritual is happening.

We can be confident that if we flee we won't be able to anything to stop it.

On reflection, I'm even less sure that there isn't a fourth player active. I think we have:

Player 1: Us
Player 2: Chaos Undivided
Player 3: Whoever sent the Shadowy figures who are ruining Chaos Undivided's victory (Ceogorach + Harlequins?)
Player 4: Whoever is gathering warp energy for an unknown purpose

Now, Player 4 could be the same as Player 2, but it could also one of the Big Four Chaos Gods going it alone. It could also be something like Malal/Malice, trying to just mess things up for everyone:

Article:
"We shall deny Nurgle their flesh to fester and rot.
We shall deny Khorne their blood and skulls.
We shall deny Tzeentch their destinies and fates.
We shall deny Slaanesh their pleasure and pain.
Death to the Dark Gods!
For the Renegade God!
Let the galaxy burn!
"

For people concerned with how we escape if we intervene, without our army here we can probably be significantly less cautious when using the Enuncia word Vorien to grant true death to anyone that gets in our way.

I don't think anyone said it is Malal? They compared Malal to the Ebony Dragon.

That's true, but Malal is one of the other candidates.

It's not the Ebon Dragon though. We don't need to flee on that basis.

Something else to consider. Lorgar's Mythos. He's the Social Primarch. I don't think running off and abandoning potential allies who may have come to rescue us to their fate is a way to strengthen his Mythos. Going and teaming up with them and using that as the basis to build a friendship seems much more likely to lead good places.

The Enemy of my Enemy is not a potential ally, it is just that. We were retreating in good order and did not require a rescue. This looks a lot more like opportunism than anything else. And if these are allies, nothing is stopping them from communicating. Lorgar has Telepathy and we can assume that anything that can show up through warp power also has a way to speak from afar.

Of course it might not be warp power, these could be Necron. Orikan is a seer of sorts too and he could have woken early.

The question is why would an enemy of my enemy who isn't my (potential) friend attack this particular chaos army exactly at the right moment when we most needed it*? What's the opportunity for them? I don't think there's anyone particularly valuable in galactic terms on the planet except for Lorgar, Fan, and Dhorak. The slaves of Chaos that the shadowy figures are fighting are very unlikely to be worth much. There are lots more cultists on this planet alone (very likely tens of millions of them), and the daemons don't die if they're killed. If it's not to help us, what's the return for the risk of dying they're taking?

There are some possibilities, but they seem much less likely than them being potential allies.

As for why they've not communicated, they may be rather bust throwing down with a bunch of daemons at the moment, and despite having Ceogorach's protection, if they're Harlequins they might be hesitant to stretch their minds across the local Warp to reach our minds given Slaneesh's attention is here.

I think we know they're supernatural from what Yzarc said, which is why we can sense them without a charm, so I think we know they're not Necrons, as they're purely technological:

Truthfully, you can only identify if it was supernatural or not due to Awareness/Occult rolls.
* We were retreating in good order, but until the 3rd party attacked, we hadn't yet made a clean getaway, the Chaos Army could chase us.

I think Necrons would register as supernatural, just with too much Yang instead of the too much Ying of Chaos.

That aside it seems like a very odd risk assessment to be willing to travel across the galaxy and show up in the middle of an army of cultists and daemons, but not to try to speak to the people you are rescuing. Yeah it risks their souls to try to talk, but so does getting ripped apart by daemons. These people either do not consider us willing to help, able to help, or they are not very clever.

Why they didn't contact us
Or they - whoever this is - simply might be having typical 40k elder race brainbug that "communicating with monkeys is bad, just do whatever you need to do and bail afterward without explaining anything."

Diplo in 40K is very weak. Eldar particularly suffer from chronic inability to just communicate that shit has hit the fan and they are here to fix things. Not without a reason, but. This is not actually just eldar problem, but they are most common source of this nonsense.

Fuck... that actually sold it to me, I could see them being that dumb.

I think that Necrons wouldn't - particularly as we sensed them through the warp:

You close your eyes, feeling the Warp around you. It's turbulent, more so than usual. You can sense multiple entities clashing, but not in a coordinated attack. No, this is different.

I'm pretty sure Necrons don't show up in the Warp

I think that if they're Harlequins, Ceogorach protects their souls when they die, even at the hands of daemons, given that daemons are their main enemies.

This is possible, but it's also likely that they're just incredibly busy fighting daemons.

Or, it's the Masque of the Silent Shroud, who are a stealth focused troupe of Harlequins, who always perform (which fighting counts as) in absolute silence.

Ok, but the ED masquerading as Malal actively makes so much fucking sense and is absolutely something he'd do lol

Probably after using Black Mirror Shintai on the Primordial Annihilator (the alleged quasi-entity that is the Gods of Chaos acting in concert).

It's a big universe though. Maybe some other galaxy is blessed with his presence.

It's a big universe though. Maybe some other galaxy is blessed with his presence.

I mean, they both act the exact same, have the same color scheme, and most people aren't sure if either of them really still exist or not.

That can't all be a coincidence. . .

The problem with passivity is that what happens is unlikely to be good for us. Whoever triggered this ritual did so after we'd already started retreating, and after the first intervention by the shadowy figures had been made to ensure we could make a clean getaway. That means they must expect the results to matter even if we're out of range.

Now, the only reason I can see for anyone to be bothering to expend effort on Colchis is because we, Lorgar, and Dharok is here.

Now, the entity performing this ritual is unlikely to be on our side, as they don't need to do anything at this point as we're already getting away and the Chaos Army is tearing itself to pieces.

That suggests they're performing this ritual to harm us, and harm us in a way that matters even if we're not in the immediate locality.

There are several ways they could do this:
  • If the shadowy figures are potentially our allies, the ritual could be to kill or banish them before they help us further.
  • It could also be to buff the Chaos Army so enough of them survive to continue to threaten us, or to counter the effect making them fight each other.
  • It could be an attempt to anchor the Daemons into reality for longer
  • There are worse options, such as this is an attempt to use the deaths of the Chaos Army as sacrifices to make something even worse for us, like a warp rift daemons can walk through.
These options aren't exhaustive, but there seem to be more ways a big warp ritual would be bad for us than it would be good for us. Just letting it happen and hoping for the best doesn't seem a winning strategy to me.

If Lorgar was better at precognition perhaps he could tell us what the ritual would do, but I expect that's a thing that needs more mastery (which I assume exists, given True Faith goes up to 10, and the very wide scale other psyker feats span).

Turn 6: The first Battle - Part 2
Colchis - 831.M30

You, Lorgar, and Dharok carefully navigate through the chaos of the battlefield, each step measured and silent. The echoes of clashing steel and the roaring of monstrous beasts fill the air, mingling with the cries of the wounded and dying. You keep low, moving through the shattered landscape of craters and broken bodies.

The terrain is treacherous, and every shadow could conceal an enemy. But your focus remains unbroken, driven by the urgency of your mission. You feel the weight of your decisions, the gravity of the choices that led you to this moment. Lorgar, his face set with determination, moves beside you, his presence a beacon of hope amid the devastation. Dharok, ever vigilant, scans the horizon, his eyes narrowed against the blinding light of the setting sun.

As you advance, something strange begins to manifest on the edge of your vision. Shapes and figures, ethereal and ghostly, flicker in and out of existence. At first, you think it's a trick of the light, a mirage conjured by your strained mind. But as you draw closer, the figures solidify, becoming clearer with each passing moment.

You are shocked to find that these are not mere phantoms of your imagination. They are spectral warriors, clad in the ancient and advanced armor of the Dark Age of Technology. Their movements are fluid, almost mechanical, yet there is an unmistakable grace to their combat. They wield weapons of an unfamiliar design, their energy blades and projectiles cutting through the Chaos forces with ease.

These ghosts fight with a precision and discipline that surpasses anything you have ever seen. Their eyes, or what passes for eyes, are vacant and cold, glowing with an eerie light. They do not speak, their only sounds are the hum of their weapons and the dull thud of their footfalls on the blood-soaked ground.

What terrifies you most is that these apparitions are appearing in the full light of day. You know, with a certainty that defies explanation, that such things are not possible. Ghosts do not walk in the sunlight. Yet here they are, defying the natural order, their presence a blasphemy against the laws of the living world.

A chill runs down your spine as you sense the same alien and cold energy spreading through the ground beneath your feet. It pulses like a heartbeat, a dark rhythm that grows stronger with each passing moment. The air grows colder, the light dimmer, as more and more ghosts emerge from the earth.

Lorgar pauses, his face pale. "This is wrong," he murmurs, his voice trembling. "This... this isn't supposed to happen."

Dharok's eyes narrow, his jaw set in grim determination. "We need to find the source," he says, his voice steady despite the chaos around you. "Whatever is causing this, it's not natural. It's a corruption, a perversion."

You nod, your resolve hardening. Together, the three of you press forward, moving through the spectral battlefield. The ground beneath your feet pulses with unnatural energy, and you can feel it seeping into your bones, chilling you to the core.

As you weave your way through the chaos of the battlefield, you can't help but feel a profound sense of oddity. The spectral warriors, their forms flickering and ethereal, move with a silent, deadly grace. Each ghost carried…..grave goods, ancient relics and artifacts that pulse with an otherworldly light. These items, though you cannot explain how, you know hold the key to the ghosts' presence and their purpose on this battlefield. They are remnants of a long-forgotten era, imbued with power and significance beyond your understanding.

You glance at Lorgar and Dharok, who seem equally bewildered by the sight. Despite the pandemonium around you, the spectral warriors make no move to attack. Instead, they engage the forces of Chaos with relentless precision, their ancient weapons cutting through the daemons and corrupted soldiers with ease. You marvel at how these ghosts, remnants of the Dark Age of Technology, have been summoned to this time and place, fighting with an intensity that speaks of a deep, unresolved purpose.

The oddity of your unmolested passage through the battlefield gnaws at you. Whenever a Chaos warrior or daemon attempts to strike, a ghostly figure intercepts the attack, cutting down the enemy with swift, silent efficiency. It is as though the ghosts recognize you, or at least see you as not their enemy. They fight with a singular focus, their attention entirely on the forces of Chaos, allowing you, Lorgar, and Dharok to move through the battlefield without opposition.

Dharok glances at you, his eyes wide with a mix of awe and fear. "This is...unreal," he murmurs, his voice barely audible over the din of battle. "Why aren't they attacking us?"

"I don't know," you reply, your voice equally hushed. "But we need to take advantage of it while we can. We have to stop Kairos."

Lorgar nods, his face set with determination. "Let's move. The ghosts are giving us a chance, and we can't waste it."

With renewed resolve, you continue to make your way towards Kairos Fateweaver, the spectral warriors creating a path through the chaos. The ground pulses with the alien energy, the air thick with the weight of the ritual. But for now, you are shielded by the ancient ghosts, their presence a mysterious but welcome reprieve. As you press on, you can't shake the feeling that these spectral warriors and their grave goods hold a deeper significance, one that may be crucial to your mission.

The battle rages on around you, a cacophony of violence and death. The ghosts fight with a relentless, almost mechanical efficiency, their movements precise and unyielding. The Chaos forces, for all their ferocity and madness, struggle against the spectral tide. It is a battle unlike any other, a clash of ancient and corrupted powers, both striving for dominance.

The sun dips lower in the sky, casting long shadows across the battlefield. The cold energy continues to spread, and with it, more ghosts appear. You can feel the weight of their presence, the unnaturalness of their existence pressing down on you.

Dharok glances at you, his eyes filled with a mix of determination and fear. "We need to hurry," he says, his voice barely audible over the din of battle. "If we don't find the source soon, this…….corruption will spread further."

You nod, your grip tightening on your weapon. The ground pulses beneath you, the energy growing stronger with each step. You can feel it pulling you forward, guiding you toward the heart of the disturbance.

Lorgar moves beside you, his eyes scanning the battlefield. "We're close," he says, his voice steady despite the fear in his eyes. "I can feel it. Whatever is causing this, it's near."

The three of you press on, your senses heightened, your resolve unwavering. The battlefield is a maze of death and destruction, but you move with purpose, driven by the need to understand, to stop this unnatural occurrence.

As you move closer to the source, the ghosts become more numerous, their presence more oppressive. The air grows colder, the light dimmer, as the unnatural energy pulses through the ground. The weight of the spectral presence presses down on you, a suffocating force that threatens to overwhelm.

As you, Lorgar, and Dharok press further into the heart of the battlefield, the air grows colder, and the light continues to dim, casting an eerie twilight over the carnage. The spectral warriors, relentless and silent, become more numerous, their presence a chilling reminder of the unnatural forces at play. The ground pulses with that alien energy, guiding you like a dark beacon towards its source.

You move with purpose, driven by the need to understand and stop this corruption. Lorgar's eyes are sharp, scanning the surroundings with a mixture of determination and fear. Dharok, ever vigilant, keeps his weapon ready, prepared to defend against any threat that might arise.

As you crest a small rise, the battlefield opens up before you, revealing the source of the corruption. At the center of the chaos stands a towering figure, its form both majestic and terrifying. Kairos Fateweaver, the two-headed Greater Daemon of Tzeentch, looms over the battlefield, his feathered wings outstretched and his staff crackling with arcane power. Each of his heads whispers and cackles, their voices weaving a tapestry of dark incantations that reverberate through the air.

Kairos is conducting a ritual, his movements precise and deliberate. Arcane symbols glow around him, inscribed in the very fabric of reality. Warp energy swirls around his form, a tempest of raw, chaotic power. But as you watch, you realize with growing horror that he is not merely summoning warp energy. He is converting it into something else, the strange and alien energy and spreading it like a dark stain.

This energy is seeping into the planet, corrupting the very essence of the world. The spectral warriors, the chilling cold, the oppressive darkness, all are manifestations of this unnatural force. You can feel its weight pressing down on you, a suffocating presence that threatens to overwhelm you and rendering you unable to…..respire.

Lorgar's face pales as he takes in the sight. "This is... this is beyond anything I could have imagined," he whispers, his voice trembling with fear and awe.

Dharok's eyes narrow, his grip tightening on his weapon. "We need to stop him," he says, his voice hard and determined. "If we don't, this corruption will consume everything."

You nod, your resolve hardening. "We need to disrupt the ritual," you say, your voice steady despite the fear gnawing at your heart. "If we can break his concentration, we might be able to stop this."

The three of you move forward, careful and silent, weaving through the chaos of the battlefield. The spectral warriors, oblivious to your presence, continue their relentless assault on the Chaos forces. As you draw closer, the air grows colder, the darkness deeper, the oppressive weight of the alien energy pressing down on you.

Kairos's voices grow louder, their dark incantations filling the air. You can feel the power of his ritual, a pulsating force that vibrates through the ground and into your very bones. The symbols around him glow brighter, their arcane light casting eerie shadows on the battlefield.

With each step, the weight of the corruption grows heavier, the cold more biting. You can feel the alien energy seeping into you, chilling you to the core. But you press on, driven by the need to stop this abomination, to save the world from the creeping darkness.

As you draw closer, you can see the details of Kairos's ritual more clearly. The symbols inscribed around him pulse with dark energy, their shapes twisting and shifting as if alive. The warp energy, now transformed into that alien force, swirls around him, a dark tempest that feeds the growing shadowland.

You exchange a glance with Lorgar and Dharok, your eyes filled with determination. This is it. The moment of truth.

Kairos's voices rise in a crescendo, the dark incantations reaching their peak. The air vibrates with power, the ground beneath your feet pulsing with that alien energy. You can feel the weight of his presence, the overwhelming force of his power, pressing down on you.

But you continue to press on, drawing closer, your resolve unbroken. You know that if you can disrupt the ritual, if you can break his concentration, you might be able to stop this corruption, to save the world from the creeping darkness.

As you reach the edge of the arcane circle, you take a deep breath, steeling yourself for what comes next. Lorgar and Dharok stand beside you, their faces set with determination. Together, you step forward, into the heart of the darkness, ready to confront the terror that lies at its center.

Kairos's eyes snap to you, both heads fixing you with a gaze filled with malice and dark amusement. His voices rise in a mocking cackle, the dark incantations twisting into words of derision and contempt.

"Foolish," he sneers, his voices echoing with dark power. "Do you think you can stop me?"

You feel the weight of his power pressing down on you. But you stand firm, your resolve unbroken. "We will stop you," you say, your voice steady despite the fear gnawing at your heart. "We will save this world from your corruption."

Kairos's laughter echoes through the air, a dark and mocking sound. "Then come," he says, his voices dripping with malice. "Come and face your doom."

With a final, determined glance at Lorgar and Dharok, you step forward, into the heart of the darkness, ready to confront the terror that lies at its center.

All of you charge toward Kairos Fateweaver, your weapons drawn and your resolve unbroken. The air is thick with the oppressive energy of his ritual, the ground beneath your feet pulsing with dark power. Kairos's mocking laughter echoes through the battlefield, his twin voices weaving a symphony of malice and contempt.

As you close the distance, you raise your weapon and strike, aiming to disrupt the arcane symbols that glow around him. Lorgar channels his faith, summoning a brilliant light to pierce the darkness, while Dharok swings his weapon with all his might, aiming to shatter the ritual's focal points.

But as your attacks reach the edge of the arcane circle, they are halted by an invisible force. The air shimmers with an ethereal barrier, a ward that deflects your blows and disperses Lorgar's light. Kairos's laughter grows louder, his eyes filled with dark amusement.

The wards pulse with dark energy, their power resonating through the ground and into your bones. Your attacks are rendered useless, repelled by the barrier that surrounds Kairos. You exchange a desperate glance with Lorgar and Dharok, the weight of your failure pressing down on you.

"You are too late," Kairos continues, his voices triumphant. "The tyranny of the sun has long since ended. The Age of Shadow is upon us."

You look around, your eyes scanning the battlefield. The spectral warriors continue their relentless assault on the Chaos forces and daemons, their presence a chilling reminder of the unnatural forces at play. But you can see that the Chaos are being overwhelmed, their numbers thinning as the tide of the dead presses on.

The chaos forces and daemons, though momentarily occupied by the spectral warriors, are beginning to break. Chaos, for all their power and precision, cannot hold back the tide forever. You can see the strain in their movements, the weariness in their forms. It will not be long before they are overwhelmed, and the full force of the Ghosts descends upon you.

Something has to be done, and soon. You know that you cannot stand idly by, that you must find a way to disrupt the ritual and stop the spread of the……..shadowland.

Lorgar's eyes meet yours, his face set with determination. "We need to find a way to break through the wards," he says, his voice steady despite the worry in his eyes.

Dharok nods, his jaw set in grim determination. "We can't let Kairos complete his ritual," he says, his voice hard. "If we don't stop him, this corruption will consume everything."

You take a deep breath, steeling yourself for what comes next. "There must be a weak point," you say, your mind racing. "Something we can exploit to break the wards."

Lorgar's eyes narrow, his mind working furiously. "The wards are tied to the symbols," he says, his voice thoughtful. "If we can disrupt the symbols, we might be able to weaken the wards enough to break through."

Dharok's eyes light up with a spark of hope. "Then we need to focus our attacks on the symbols," he says, his voice filled with determination. "If we can break them, we can stop Kairos."

You nod, your resolve hardening. Together, you move forward, your eyes fixed on the arcane symbols that glow around Kairos. The ground pulses with dark energy, the air thick with the weight of the ritual. But you press on, driven by the need to stop this corruption, to save the world from the creeping darkness.

As you draw closer, you can feel the power of the symbols, their energy resonating through the ground and into your bones. The wards shimmer with ethereal light, their presence a barrier between you and Kairos. But you do not falter. You raise your weapon, aiming for the nearest symbol, and strike with all your might.

The force of your blow resonates through the ground, the air vibrating with the impact. The symbol flickers, its light dimming for a moment before flaring back to life. You can see the strain in the wards, the slight weakening of their power. It is a small victory, but a victory nonetheless.

Lorgar channels his faith, his light piercing the darkness and striking at another symbol. The light burns with a holy intensity, searing the dark energy and causing the symbol to flicker. Dharok swings his weapon with all his might, aiming to shatter the symbols and break the wards.

But the wards hold strong, their power a testament to Kairos's mastery of the arcane. The symbols flicker and dim, but they do not break. Kairos's laughter echoes through the air, his twin voices filled with dark amusement.

"The Age of Shadow is upon us. Embrace the darkness, for it is your fate." he sneers, his eyes filled with scorn.

The weight of his words presses down on you, the chill of the alien energy continuing to seep into your very soul. But you do not give up.

You know that time is running out. Something must be done, and soon. But you do not falter. Together with Lorgar and Dharok, you press on, determined to find a way to break the wards and stop Kairos's ritual.
