You're the Queen - Now What? [CK2ish Character-Focused Quest]

We got 45 Dureks back from the other strong success, there should be more in Varaday, so for example:
60 for strong and 30 for weak.
Even the 30 Dureks would mean 3.3 Dureks less interest per turn.
If I see that it takes an indefinite amount of actions to build an internal network and we have around 6 neighbors, at least one of which is hostile, we won't get to it for a long time.
In addition, the chance of building the network at all is not much higher (Edit2: Even lower because Vallefor's trait doesn't count) than getting the money back directly.
-[ ] In the Varaday Republic (Base Chance: 43% + Intrigue)
We have to pass two checks instead of one and also use money.
I wouldn't overestimate the financial center thing either, I'm not that keen on taking on debt again and even if we did, we have direct contact with the dwarves who are also much closer.

Edit: I think if we don't do it now we won't do it for at least 5 turns, which in my example would be 16.5 Dureks interest that we would have saved.
Yeah, I can see your point that it might take a while, if we have to build up our internal spy network and a spy network in Morvak and Red Spear, then build a spy network in Varaday, before clawing back the money. A potential compromise would be doing the spy network in Varaday and then try to claw back money next turn, though I think a lot of people are rather concerned about security issues and might prefer something being done about that soon.

While I can see the intents here and am more or less OK with almost every other action, my opinion on the matter is that the bolded action-the Envoys action-isn't the right one for this round. We do want to talk about marriage, but I do want some nuance here. Just announcing that we're looking for suitors is bound to attract additional attention, and is a vector for threats coming in by being disguised as servantry of the suitors or similar lines, while we still don't have an internal network set up and only just got our Keeper of Envoys in. While this plan does start on making that internal network, I don't think that's enough. I also have an intuitive feeling that the Marriage is going to cost Money, and frankly our problem number one is still our massive debt problem.

I honestly think I just want to improve the diplomatic corps a lot more, THEN prepare for marriage next turn. Less chances of failure later on down the road-and I bet that there'll be diplomacy checks our Keeper of Envoys would appreciate the boost in regards to that. If you can change the envoy action to rebuilding our diplomatic corps, I would be 100% cool with your plan.
Well, as I understand it, you have two issues with doing the announcement, that of security and that of money. When it comes to security, then I cannot guarantee anything, though I do not think that foreign servants would have much opportunity to assassinate us, at least not compared to our own servants. When it comes to money, then I would agree, that the weeding itself would likely be expensive, then the deals made about a potential marriage alliance might bring us more money and the marriage itself would give us the opportunity to get lower interest rates.

That said, I am unsure, if anybody else likes doing that action this turn, as much as I like it, since I seem to be the only one with a plan, that includes it, and it is not like it cannot wait a turn, so I am okay with making the change.

[X] Plan: A New Foundation

I've become obsessed with an online game so SV is getting neglected a bit, thanks for coming up with some plans so I can quickly compare them and pick one.

[X] Plan: Looking for spouse and dealing with Currency Contraction + Laws

With the change to rebuilding the diplomatic corps, I believe this is the strongest plan. Deals with the currency contraction, deals with our internal network, sets up our roads for the cheapest and easiest repairs possible, and in general helps ensure we have the strongest possible position we can manage in a turn.q

[X] Plan: A New Foundation

Though I'm tempted to replace the negotiation option with one of the socialization ones, specifically castle staff. Not to be too stereotypical (oh look the queen is willing to talk with commoners! how great of her!), but these people are generally those physically closest to the Queen for most of her day. And also prepare her meals. Might be nice if they at least liked her. I know we have a spymaster, but I cant help but think he'd have a lot of blind spots regarding the help.

Also regarding our preliminary 3 marriage candidates I had a viseral wince at the one who'd want a shared defense agreement against the Saber Rattlers. Especially since they just got some of their territory taken (not as much as it should've but eeehhh). We want to prevent an invasion, not sure if we wanna dedicate ourselves to mutual defense.

Some of you may remember that I was against withholding 36 Dureks because I would rather pay back debts.
In the end I understand that the majority simply wanted more leeway for this turn.
Therefore my surprise that the leading plan only wants to spend 5 Dureks.
Now that we have already withheld the money shouldn't we do something productive with it?
For example, trying to solve the currency contraction problem?
I think one of two things is otherwise true: either we made a mistake in holding back so much money or we are now making a mistake in using so little of it.

This is a false dichotomy. We chose for leeway with the information we had at the time. We didn't know what the options were. And now that they are available - particularly, the matter of the road materials and that we want to do the Front Companies first - the questers here are deciding that they think the set of options presented is the most appropriate to do right now. Whether or not a given option spends money is only one factor in people's deliberations. We are under no particular obligation to save or spend.

Now for the record, my vision is that, if my plan is taken, we'd spend 62 Dureks (though there's room for more or less, I have a particular reason for neatness in this precise amount) of incoming income on the Royal Bank of Zedarsh debt, basically halving it. Then, with the 81 Dureks starting Turn 3, then we would actually go on a spending spree then: for the road materials, minting new coins, speeding up the development of our internal spy network, and potentially other things. That would be the right time to do so, since we'd have gotten the higher priority non-spending items ticked off the list.

This is misleading, all available plans organize the Front Companies.
The others only use the [CORRESPONDENCE] action and not the [ROYAL VAULTS] action.
The real trade-off is that your plan includes more tax assessments.
A priority that I don't fully understand when we've already reassessed the highest-value income and just have the money available to solve a problem that really doesn't have to wait a turn.
The only thing you achieve with this is that we have to hold back more money in the next budget because we still have to solve this problem.

Edit: The chance of passing the check with [CORRESPONDENCE] is even a bit higher.

Edit: Since my plan does not seem to be winning, then I will add a vote for the plan I prefer amongst the two leading plans.

[X] Preparation for road material and marriage.
I decided to also vote for Preparation for road material and marriage, since I do like that it is going to mint new coins this turn and my plan is unlikely to win at this point.

So, you want to allow our debt to grow even further, rather than try to pay it down? If that is the case, then it would not prevent us to spend money, that we already have on minting new coins this turn, rather than waiting a turn, and the sooner that we do it, the sooner we will reap the benefits from it.

Umm, I just stated there that I'd work on paying down the Zedarsh debt. It just would take two turns to clear out, not one.

Well, the current interest on our debt is 101 Dureks, so if we only spend 62 Dureks on debt repayment, then our debt will grow.
Well, there's only so much we can do in one turn, what with everything else we have to spend stuff on. So if you're worried about the size of the interest, then we'd have to focus on paying the interest and not the principals until we have enough extra income left over to go towards those.

And remember, even though the Front Companies will reduce the cost of road materials, we don't know by how much. It's something I'm concerned about.

Well, even if "Preparation for road material and marriage." spends 10 Dureks more than your plan, then it also attempts to claw back money, which if success full will most likely more than make up for the increased costs. In the worst case we can choose not to pay all the interest on turn 3, if it turns out that we do not have enough money to buy the road materials.

With only a few hours left for the vote, I want to make the case for my plan "Preparation for road material and marriage" a last time.

Both leading plans have some things in common, but differ in 3 ways:
dealing with the Currency Contraction vs additional Tax Assessments
get money back vs rebuild spy network
increase dock income vs Increase income from natural resources

dealing with the Currency Contraction vs additional Tax Assessments
That seems to me to be the most important point - we just have the money to solve the problem with currency contraction and there is no reason to assume that it will get better on its own.
Even the planner of "A New Foundation" has said that he just wants to postpone the issue for one turn.
In return, we would do more tax assessments, which I don't see as a priority.
We have already done most of the valuable tax assessments and that is a process that we do passively every round anyway.
There is also one check less that can fail because the currency contraction doesn't require one if we choose it.
A positiv side effect is also that we approach the front companies with [CORRESPONDENCE] and not with [ROYAL VAULTS] and therefore have a slightly greater chance of success.

get money back vs rebuild spy network
For the next turn we have to hold a lot of money back if we want to buy the material for the roads all at once to get a better deal.
If we don't find money somewhere else, it will likely mean our debts will increase because we won't be able to pay back enough.
In order to avoid this and to avoid us putting it off forever, I want to use one turn to get the last of the money back.
I agree that spy networks are important and starting next turn we can build whatever networks we want, but first we should finish this.

increase dock income vs Increase income from natural resources
That is the smallest difference, but I am of the opinion that we get more from the dock income increase.

I hope you could give the plan "Preparation for road material and marriage" a chance.

Well, the current interest on our debt is 101 Dureks, so if we only spend 62 Dureks on debt repayment, then our debt will grow.

You make it sound like paying back debt is useless unless its in a 100% lump sum, and thats just not how things work.

Interest is, of course, by percentage

Therefore, lessening the base amount will still have the net positive effect of making less money owed next time

Chipping down debt, halving a debt, is a viable strategy for controlling debt.

So I will always be confused by any arguments on this kind of basis.

Vote will come if things aren't shut down by the time i get back from laundry

New Foundation Wins!

I'll make the rolls tomorrow, and hopefully the financial post as well.

The overall probabilities look like this:

Correspondence: Base Chance 64% - ~41% Strong Success/~46% Weak Success/~13% Failure
Royal Vaults: Base Chance 67% - ~45% Strong Success/~54% Weak Success/~11% Failure
High Marshal: Base Chance 70% - 49% Strong Success/42% Weak Success/9% Failure
Secrets: Base Chance 72% - ~52% Strong Success/~40% Weak Success/~8% Failure
Sheriffs and Reeves: Base Chance 75% - ~56% Strong Success/~38% Weak Success/~6% Failure
Envoys: Base Chance 77% - ~59% Strong Success/~36% Weak Success/~5% Failure
Queen 1: Base Chance 75% - ~56% Strong Success/~38% Weak Success/~6% Failure
Queen 2: Base Chance 70% - 49% Strong Success/42% Weak Success/9% Failure

You know, when you study the spread, it really tells you how much difference a half dozen to a baker's dozen percentage points in the Base Chance makes.

So in summary a banging turn with 23 Standard Success, 5 Major Success and Queen 2 not being rolled for yet?

Nice, at least the roads were major success. Sad Queenie herself not smashing it out of the park though.

No misses this time, and a lot of really good rolls. Honestly, if a 'VERY STONG SUCCESS' was possible, I feel like Rienne would have gotten it. The dice were less kind to Vanessa herself, but again, hardly a failure.
