The thing is that not only do the positions give them power, but they are also powerful vassals (in CK they expect to be on the council) so I ask myself whether it is even worth working on removing them, there might be something better we can do with political capital.

Paradoxically, choosing Vallefor as a Spymaster actually seems like a good choice, and not just because of his specialization. His wealth and influence, coupled with a rather controversial reputation, make it very unlikely that there would be any bribery or some overly ambitious scheme, and the chance that he would be threatened is very small. And while we'll have to find common ground with him, that already seemed like a top priority for me given his influence, and it doesn't seem like he's treating Vanessa badly considering he was the one pushing her appointment. Keep your friends close and turn your enemies into friends - Vanessa is pretty good at diplomacy.

After all, we can't completely trust anyone in this position. Lady Balmain, for example, although she probably won't mind Vanessa's origins, will most definitely pursue her own interests. I'm tempted to put her in the head judge position just so these two can continue to get in each other's way.

As for Rienne, we should give her significant lands - in fact, she could become an important figure in the monarchist faction, given that she has almost no ties to the local nobles. Probably not the County of Aloce, that would get her and the queen into a lot of trouble, and her management isn't the best, but the next two sound great.

We should think about permanent positions for both of them, we won't get rid of them that easily and perhaps we shouldn't anyway for the stability of the kingdom.
I would consider someone really competent for the Foreign Minister and someone very loyal for the Spymaster to be ideal.

I doubt I will be doing much in the planning or voting, because I tend to shy away from CK2 quests because I've not played the games but…
I can at least amuse myself by saying that when I was reading the introduction to the various states, when it came to the Free Towns when I read 'fruits and fruit spirits' I thought more of ancestral spirits born of having good relations with farming and tending the land…

And uhh, gonna dip from this vote, as I suspected I would. But I WILL say, however, that it seems to me that we have an excess of soldiers and there are places that see constant warfare. It's one thing to get involved in Mordak's constant brawling, but the Orcwatch is a thing, and those countries that feel the need to maintain that position would likely enjoy having that burden shared, in exchange for…I haven't a strong idea of what to ask in exchange. Simple probably is soldiers for coin-starting with the debts they hold over us and working from there.

I think this is most suitable to me. Lady Balmain knows a lot, so should be able to use her existing skills and knowledge fairly well. Count Vallefor should be able to use his connections, though there is definitely risk if he's disloyal. The land I'm least bothered about.

Here's my argument on land. I want to make Rienne a Marcher Lord, overseeing one of our most dangerous borders. Yes she'll have to develop it herself, but she can be allowed to use some of the defense budget to built and supply border fortresses, which will stimulate her new economy.

I'm wondering why people want to see Vallefor as foreign minister. His ability works mostly within the kingdom, and I'm not sure how good it is to trust foreign policy to a man whose weakness is diplomacy and who views people primarily based on their nobility. We will not only be dealing with nobles with an excellent pedigree. Wouldn't it be better to appoint him as a judge if you don't trust him to be a master spy?
 
I have the same opinion on this point.
Not only is his dip stat low at 5, his trait only helps with gathering information or blackmailing people.
I guess, he'll probably stay in the position forever.
Imagine what we could achieve with a foreign minister with 10 in his main stat and a trait that specializes in contracting.
(is possible for a side character, look at the Treasury Minister)

I don't want to see him as Spymaster either, but as Chief Judge he is in a safe position.
If he causes a problem, it will be clear and we can take care of him.

I personally feel that putting a snobbish, entitled noble in charge of justice in a kingdom which has very recently had a king abusing that system is asking for trouble. I'd actually trust him more as spymaster than chief judge. With diplomacy, he's not great at it but he's got connections basically everywhere, and no foreign noble can complain that we've sent inferiors to deal with them.
