    -[x] Begin phaser boring
-[X] Amy buys it and starts going through the compressed training course, C'Nola is suspicious as fuck and tries to expose him, T'are begs off to calibrate arrays or something and coms Janeway as soon as she's out of earshot of the inevitable disaster trio.
-[X] Greet the incoming fleets and tell them how much you appreciate their immediate relief efforts for a world subjected to a temporal anamoly and forerunner bullshit, the locals are of course also grateful and would like to meet with everyone face to face and try to get everything sorted out, unfortunately said temporal anomaly has been very disruptive so it may take some doing. See how long the various governments of earth-2 can give these poor sods the run around.

Hah, wow, long time since an update!

I've been working on my new book's edits - it has required a lot of fiddly structural changes.

The first book in the series has been fucking DEMOLISHING it on the favorable reviews, though, like, look at this!

The sequel is gonna have a body swapping trans lich!

Anyway...

For PHASER BORING, it'll take energy (which doesn't matter, you have time to regenerate energy before the next scene anyway) and a 3d20 check vs a diff of 2!

Catra rolls 2d20 for her suss suss battle bus. It is opposed by Niles. (Neelix Miles)

T'are rolls 2d20 for likewise!

Janeway rolls 2d20 for diplomacy - that difficulty is also opposed!

Miles got 3s (and you get 1 momentum since he got an extra die)

The Fleets got 2s and a complication! Oh joyus day.

So I imagine that we want to use that momentum to get an extra die somewhere? On Janeway probably, cause we have two chances to beat miles? But would catra or t'are need to get 3 or 4s individually or combined?

But the difficulty two, does that mean we need to roll 2 or under?

Have we successfully tied them up in diplomatic falderal?

Depends on your roll!

You can get +1d20 to a roll!

And no, you get a success if you roll under Stat+Skill, then get 2 successes if you roll under just that skill alone.

Mk. Well I'll roll for Catra I guess

Edit: Is that 2s and a complication?

Shucks. Miles must have ridiculous stats in this field then huh (I mean, obviously, but still). We should probably spend the momentum on T'are then?

Unless we don't care that he gets away in the shuttle. His plans usually win with all sides getting what they want, unless they're the bad guys (I don't think we're the bad guys?), so we could just spend the momentum on Janeway and let Miles do Miles.

I think it's fine to let Niles be Niles. Let's spend the momentum on Janeway.

If the next person also agrees, then maybe they can roll 3d20 for Janeway and 2d20 for T'are?

Actually, your 17 was off by only a few points! The roll was quite close and if he hadn't spent threat (giving you momentum), it would have been a tie. Stat wise he's on par with Catra when it comes to sneaking and scheming.

Well nuts now I'm on the fence again. I should not be awake right now, so if no one else has I'll roll something when I've gotten more than 3 hours of sleep…

There are two rolls left to do. T'Are is rolling 2d20 vs Nelix (Miles), and needs three successes. Janeway is also rolling 2d20 and needs 2 successes. We have 1 momentum that can add an extra die to one of the rolls.

Well, I guess I'm just gonna roll then. Using the momentum on Janeway, since @Draz agrees.

LADY LINDY AND THE KHAN OF KHANS: Part 2 (0.4)
As the turbolift hissed open, T'are stammered. "Oh, I just realized, I have to...uh...do...stuff!" She said, nodding down at Neelix Junior, who laughed gaily.

"Oh, please, as if I would want to try flying one of these shuttles without you helping me," Neelix Junior said, smiling at her with a smile that some might have called shit eating and others could have called charming. "You have the best handle on sensors and communication technology on the ship, best person for keeping track of an errant shuttle, eh?"

"Well, I...I guess," T'are said, while Amy slid her arm around her shoulder, drawing her in.

"Come on, T'are, you're off duty anyway," she said, cheerfully. "I love these type 10s, getting to fly them is great fun."

C'nola sighed, slowly, her ears twitching up. She rolled her eyes up to the ceiling, then followed after.

"Marvelous," Neelix Junior said, then started to stump forward, his short frame almost entirely obscured by the three women following after him. The four became smaller and smaller as they emerged into the cavernous shuttlebay, where gleaming shuttle-pods and worker bees lurked, waiting to be prepped, launched, used. "Now, how do we work these fabricators?"

***

Janeway shook her head. "Prepare for the phaser boring. We need to get to the bottom of this as quickly as possible. Are we in subspace communication range with those fleets?" she asked.

"Yes ma'am," Tuvok said as Janeway took her seat.

"Captain!" Tom Paris' voice, tight and attentive, barked out. "Detecting energy weapons fire at the Kuiper belt on the tachyon and subspace scanners. It looks like elements of the Kazon and Talaxian fleet are exchanging fire - the Haakonians are veering way off, but the Viidians are coming in with several of their elements, using...classic Viidian tactics, according to Banara."

Janeway swore.

The screen showed, in grainy blips and flashes, the immediate engagement. Picket ships - roughly frigate sized - had both run into one another's range while at warp and had begun to exchange equally long ranged torpedo fire. Beads of white light whipped across the screen and shield flashes combined with the glittering red flashes of hull impacts. A Kazon frigate retreated, bleeding atmosphere, bodies, and hull fragments in a haze of clinical pixels. Two Talaxian frigates were similarly striken, but they managed to lightly damage twice their number before withdrawing. The two picket forces started to withdraw into the protective embrace of their larger formations - more in response to the Viidians than to their damages.

"Captain, their communication jamming and encryption is so intense that we are having difficulty getting a secure communication with any particular element," Tuvok said.

Janeway frowned. "Tom Paris," she said. "Take me within an AU of that space, pick the largest chunk of ice you can find...and disintegrate it."

"Aye aye, Captain," Tom said, his voice focused. The USS Voyager dropped into warp with a streak of glittering prismatic light - and at even minimal warp speeds, the minuscule distance from Earth-2 to the Kuiper Belt cleared in a fraction of a second. The phaser beam that arced from the array whipped out and turned a small planetoid's worth of ice and rock into an expanding haze of plasma as Janeway stood up...and rather than following up the overt display of mobility and strength with bluster and bravado, what came from her mouth was...

Clear.

Elegant.

Polite.

Dangerously polite.

"We are pleased to welcome you to the Earth-2 system. The temporal anomaly that has, until recently, held sway over this system has been highly disruptive and left an entire planet in a humanitarian crisis that will need a great deal of effort to clear up. The governments of Earth-2 are quite pleased to see the interstellar community is so eager to assist them - but it seems that the lack of trust and cooperation between your fleets has already led to an unfortunate confrontation and loss of life. And so, I would like to offer the USS Voyager's aid in any repairs or medical emergencies that you may have suffered in this...regrettable incident." SHe nodded to Tuvok, who tapped at his console.

"No immediate responses..." He paused.

"The Viidians are pulling back, as are the Kazon. We're getting a com from the Haakonians. And the Talaxians," Tom said.

Tuvok frowned. "The Haakonian message is a one way message, I will play it first."

The screen blinked on. A middle aged Haakonian male glowered at the screen. Behind him were several other very serious looking Haakonian officers. "I am Admiral Dovank Trelar Haakkorash, in charge of this fleet. You will withdraw from this system immediately. Any assistance or interference will be seen as a war against the Haakonian Order. This is your only warning." The screen blinked off.

"Charming," Janeway muttered, as the screen blinked on. The Talaxian officer was a youngish woman, with the same kind of tufts and spots as Neelix, though her hair color trended towards a snow-leopard pattern versus Neelix's brighter coloration.

"This is Admiral Banix, Talaxian Reconfederated Republic Astronavy, Deep Space Fleet 9, from the Dancing Sprite. So! You're the human ship we've heard so much about. Impressive gunnery you have there. And warp in system efficiency - my techs say you can run rings around all of us."

Janeway shrugged one shoulder.

"You have a big enough stick to take out any one of us, I think, especially with your secondary ship somewhere in this system." Her gray on gray eyes narrowed. "But you can't take out two of us. Now, since it seems like each of us are at one another's throats, that means that none of us are going to jump." She smirked, slightly. "Do you think I have the picture down pat?"

"Quite," Janeway said.

"So, it's the election of 98 again," Admiral Banix said, her voice grim. "We'll be in touch, Captain Janeway."

The screen blinked off.

Tom sighed. "They're withdrawing too. Each fleet is rabbiting to a different part of the system with local resources and anchorages."

"A siege," Tuvok said, quietly.

"Which is in our favor, at least," Janeway said. "They're not shooting at one another, and they're not invading the Earth..." She rubbed her palm against her face. "Bring us back to Earth-2. We'll pick a drill site that's not in their direct line of sight..."

***

"Okay, I get how...I was talked into this," Amy whispered as she crouched over Neelix Junior's seat in the cramped cockpit. Her gaze turned on T'are, who was hunched over a coms console, her fingers playing along the buttons to modulate the EM emissions on the Type-10 shuttle that crept through the depths of space. "But how the fuck did you agree to this, C'nola?"

"He had a very good point," C'nola said, shrugging lazily, as she fiddled with the complex set of components she had pulled from the replicator in the aft of the shuttle's main compartment.

"He said it'd be funny," Amy said.

"And of great tactical value," Neelix Junior said, his brow set as he watched through the forward panel of the shuttle. "Have you ever had dealings with Viidians? Up close and personal? I have." He shook his head. "I've had the extreme misfortune of having to spend at least one whole month cycle on one of their stations under the guise of...a little admiral." He smirked, wryly. "Actually made a few enemies of Podmaster Nurel. Thank you, by the way."

"You're welcome!" C'nola said, brightly.

"I still feel like I should say thank you a few more times," Neelix Junior said. "Nurel threatened to kill me, then revive me with Phage treatments, so he could kill me again a few more times."

"Nurel was bad, but you should have seen his right hand man," T'are whispered.

"Ugh," Neelix Junior shuddered.

"Starfleet isn't about starting fights," Amy muttered.

"We're not starting anything," Neelix Junior said. "This plan is exactly the same trick I pulled at Ga'doula. You place those..." His hand waved to the finished munitions that C'nola had quietly started to stack up. "...on the marked part of the ships we've picked, and you just need to release a phased tachyon pulse to trigger them - and the acid eats right into the antimatter conduits. A warp breach occurs before the damage sensors even trigger."

"What about their Focused?" Amy asked. "They're inhumanly good at this stuff."

"That's the trick," Neelix Junior's grin was feral. "You conceal them in those conduits because those conduits are always throwing up computational errors in their little slave pens." His eyes glittered. "The slaves notice, but their idiot slavers, so blinded by repeated false signals, will dismiss it. They're hung by their own crimes."

"...sucks about the Focused," C'nola said, quietly.

Neelix Junior's grin faded. "I think about the ones...I can't save every day, C'nola."

The shuttle continued to creep towards the Viidian fleet.

As the USS Voyager came into orbit above their targeted drilling location, Tuvok tapped his way through the communications that they had received. Stony silence from the Viidians and the Kazons, the bluster of the Haakonians. He was working his way through the officers seen in the Haakonian footage with Neelix, who was bent over.

"I recognize...some of these..." Neelix said, quietly. "Mr. Tuvok..." He shook his head. "It's not good. The Haak caste is a kind of military aristocracy - that shared letter isn't just for show. They have bloodlines stretching back centuries. And this Haakkorash? He was one of the more infamously...bullish admirals, even before the last war. Old guard, conservative, far right..."

"By the Federation standards, even your most left wing party is considered far right," Tuvok said, quietly. "But what I am curious about is the man trying to hide his face."

"Oh. That." Neelix rolled his eyes. "That's Jaine Haakvalik. I had a dossier on him that was summed up in one sentence."

"Oh?"

"Harmless," Neelix said. "He's one of the billion or so Haak that are just around for their breeding, so they can breed."

"A noble scion without merit," Tuvok said. "And yet, he is in charge of the coms system for the Haakonian flagship."

Neelix frowned. Starship communication, despite what some civilians thought, was far from a simple task.

"And," Tuvok said. "He embedded this."

He touched the button and the screen filled with Haakonian lettering.

"Cousin," Neelix read it off. "Under no circumstances are you to follow old Stork's orders, you will die horribly. This isn't like the last time, the Podmasters are wise to your tricks. Abort immediately. If you get yourself killed, Aunt Juliz will...strangle...me...with..." Neelix trailed off. "Juliz is my sister!"

"That would make Haakvalik your nephew's cousin, then," Tuvok said, frowning. "Did Lieutenant Jetrel say anything about this mission?"

"No!" Neelix exclaimed.

"Firing," Tom Paris said from the front of the bridge.

The phaser beam stabbed down into an uninhabited portion of the planet. The whirring rang through the hull while the arrays poured energy through the atmosphere - a shocking display of power and technical precision. None of it was noticed by Neelix and Tuvok, who were both hastily trawling through security footage. The Doctor's annoyed face appeared on the screen as Neelix said: "Doctor, has my nephew been around?"

"No, despite my best efforts," The Doctor said. "I am fascinated by his case. Do you know-"

"Where the hell is he then!?" Neelix exploded.

"How should I know?" The Doctor asked, frowning. "Did you know, he appears to have an intense allergic reaction to-"

The screen blinked off.

"One of our shuttles is missing," Tuvok said. "...your nephew appears to be quite talented at security evasion and grand larceny."

"I am going to wring that little!" Neelix growled, clenching his hands.

"What the hell!"

The exclamation drew both of their attentions as they turned to the screen. The phaser bore had completed.

The hole was only fifty meters deep. There was a glowing red line around the edges of the cut, but the dirt that sat at the bottom was entirely untouched by heat. It looked as dull brown as if they had simply scraped off soil and rock. Janeway sprang to her feet. "Paris!" she said. "Explain, what happened?"

"I...I don't know," Tom said.

They all turned to the science seat. It was empty.

"Where is my science officer?" Janeway growled. Growled. "Computer: Located Liutenant T'are."

The computer chirruped. "Lieutenant T'are is not aboard the vessel."

Janeway's face paled.

She tapped her com badge. "Lieutenant Strong, come in." Silence. "Computer! Locate Amy Strong."

"Lieutenant Amy Strong is-"

"Locate Catra, then!" Janeway snapped, her temper clearly fraying.

"Lieutenant C'nola is not-"

Janeway, Neelix, Tuvok and Tom all exchanged a glance.

"NEELIX JUNIOR!"
