A guy with no references for healthy relationships (including the self-awareness necessary to realize that his relationship with his brother is kind of codependent) would probably be pretty scared of screwing up, I'd say.

And I'm honestly more interested in the students, personally. Hopefully teach them that nice guys can be nice just because they're nice, sorta thing, fix the damage their troll of a headmistress did. Y'know?

I vote we are generally apathetic to the attention of the opposite sex, up and until someone catches are eye. Then it's a different story.

I understand a lot of people may be once-burned twice-shy, but I think QM is a good enough writer that we can take a chance on later romance.

I'll be frank, out of all the responses this one feels very out of character. Hayato is actually overly busy most of the time, he has demonstrated a certain irrelevance to his own value in comparison to his brother, and even not understanding could make a bit of sense as to Hayato being to focused on the people around him and not in touch with his feelings. This self conscious "I'll screw it up" Hayato is something way out of left feild. Doesn't match our happy go lucky protagonist and his take problems head on manner at all.

Well, 1) that's why I made this a choice for people to pick and 2) it being out of character could be the point. It's something that Hayato hasn't shown usually mainly because he's never really had to deal with it.

Reminder: The only person who he's ever even gotten close to feeling something romantic for so far is Ritsuko. And the two of them aren't 100% sure if they actually feel that way about each other. So, Hayato not showing any fear of relationships makes sense.

It's like how Kamina was actually scared as fuck most of the time and didn't know if things would work out the way he said they would. But he always had faith in Simon to see them through. So, he was able to be brave and not let shit get him down because Simon was there.

At least, this is how I would try to work it into the narrative if it's chosen. If it's not, then I have other ideas.

Edit: Also, do note that this primarily means romantic relationships. Hayato won't suddenly be afraid of making deep and personal friendships. That's something he can handle because...well friendships and romance are two different things in his mind.

Well at least he'll mostly be the same. Wouldn't this make him awkward with women expressing attraction to him? Like Irina?
 
Is more that he does not register it as an attraction but rather manerisms, wich in Irina's case is likely correct.

Depends.

With Irina he figures she just acts that way. Like one of those people that is really touchy or friendly. So he doesn't really feel awkward.

If Ritsuko started acting like that, then yeah he would. Because he knows that Ritsuko might like-like him and he's not sure if that's her way of saying she does.
