Part 57: Lower Undead Burg VIII
[X] Go up and face the archers

You heave a defeated sigh. Who defeated you? Yourself? Your own conscience? Probably this stupid sewer. Either way, you turn around and start walking back to the stairs to the other doorway. "Fine, we'll try the other way first."

"I didn't say anything." Oscar says, following after you with a hint of relief in his voice.

"Yeah, yeah. You can't turn your sense of smell off, so I'm doing you a favour." You don't mention that you'd rather not go around smelling like a sewer either, sense of smell or not.

You pause at the doorway, peeking your head in with more caution than you probably need. A quick check ends with no more arrows flying at you, so that's a good start. Gingerly, you step inside and start making your way for the stairs.

"So, what made you hesitant to…" Oscar begins, trailing off as he passes the dead Hollow archer. "I see."

"Don't start."

"Again, I didn't say anything."

You huff and focus on climbing the stairs. Speaking of, there's a lot of them. Even just to reach the next floor, you've already climbed a decent number of them. Why is this tower so big?

You stop and check for archers when you finally reach the second floor. Nothing but another doorway, a collapsed continuation of the staircase and the subsequent bricks scattered across the wooden floor. You were worried for nothing.

"Looks like the coast is clear." Oscar comments, stepping past you and looking around. "We climbed a fair way. I wouldn't be surprised if we were above the Burg now."

From the doorway, which you note looks awfully dark and damp, you hear what sounds like someone shifting in water and a quiet "hmm?"

You share a glance with Oscar. Already having dealt with ambushes enough, you both ready your weapons before investigating.

What you find is… not what you were expecting.

"Oi! I thought I heard some yammering. A fancy knight and some little sorceress. I'm sure you're loaded, hehehehe!" A hollow leans forward against some bars beside where the doorway meets a familiar wet tunnel. Her – you assume from the voice, at least – mouth is stretched up in a big grin, her lips long having shrivelled up and a number of teeth having fallen out.

"Uh…?" You mutter, glancing at Oscar again.

"Still got your senses about you, hmm?" The Hollow says, her grin growing as she eyes the two of you. "Good! You can buy some of my moss, then, hehehehehe!"

"Uh, moss?" You ask, somewhat… confused. "Oscar, is this a thing people do here? Buy moss?"

"How rude!" The Hollow interrupts before he can reply. "I'll have you know my moss is the best you can find! Freshly peeled! Even some that's blooming some pretty little flowers. Come on, it's good for you! Don't be a pair of humdrums." She suddenly stops and frowns at you, her mouth forming a sneer. "Oh, I see. You think I've gone to the other side, don't you? That I've cracked my head and gone Hollow. Pah! I can see it in your eyes! You'd trust a patch of moss over me…"

Does this lady ever stop talking…? You raise your hands when you see her open her mouth to carry on. "O-Okay, okay! Look, we'll take a look, just stop!"

"You're surprisingly easy to convince." Oscar comments, which you ignore.

Look, practice makes perfect, and we've clearly shown that we need more practice with throwing knives. Might as well invest while we got the chance :V

Presumably, either talking to her or input from Oscar will hopefully make it clear that hey, this moss is useful if we get poisoned, so best to grab at least a few of them before we wander into the poison segments of the game. Also just a few more homeward bones so we have more than one on hand; can't recall if we can use only one bone between two people in the first place. Can certainly be convinced to buy more moss if anyone thinks we'll need it.

Hmm, seems like a decent plan to me, though maybe we should grab another purging stone too even though we haven't used one for some time. They *are* this worlds grief-seed equivalent and thus we kinda need them if we don't wanna become a dark souls boss ourselves, which I'm pretty would be an instant game over. Sure, they're pricey but much like healing potions in, say, Skyrim I'd rather have far too many than not enough: Better to have and not need and all that.

Admittedly, my thought on purging stones was if we want any, it's a couple minutes jaunt from here to just hit up Oswald again and buy them for half the price since he still has three left. That's more game logic, granted, dunno if we can just vote "run off to the gargoyle roof real quick" specifically.

Huh, good point: forgot about him for a minute there. We should probably loop back and look into that at some point soon, best to stock up before we need them and all. That'll be for another vote though, we'll scratch it off the list and just make time a little later: we've got two on us and are only on 16% corruption so unless we get horrifically mauled *twice* in a row or start spaming magic like it's going out of style we should be alright.

As a quick second thought, we should probably decide what to talk to the lady about, then vote for it. Without a topic I can only assume it'll end in pointless and uncomfortable small talk, which is awkward enough when the other guy isn't a toothless zombie-lookalike.

While on the topic of buying cheaper purging stones from Oswald; can we backtrack without a viable danger respawning? I haven't played Dark Souls so I dunno if turning around is even viable without a degree of risk. We don't have a cleansing stone (if I remember correctly), so I feel it isn't worth risking. Maybe we can negotiate a better price and just get one here?

From here to Firelink and subsequently Firelink to Oswald is basically just petty hollow spawns, so in terms of danger there shouldn't be anything worth worrying about. We do have two purging stones right now though, so it's a balance of "do we want more than that in the first place" and "if we do want more, why not backtrack real quick anyways?"

The zombie woman drags a big, somewhat damp sack out of the darkness behind her and opens it up to you with a big grin. As expected, you can see a LOT of moss, some red but mostly purple clumps. There's also a bunch of other stuff: skulls, hands, bones, knives, arrows and little sparkly stones. There's also… is that… no, definitely not. It must just be something that looks and smells really bad, not actually… nope, definitely not.

"Are those Homeward Bones?" Oscar asks, crouching down to see into the bag better.

"Oh yes, yes indeed! Hehehe!" The woman replies. "All in good condition. Well, as good as bones can be…"

"And these… hands. And skulls. What purpose do they have?" He asks, sounding a bit less comfortable.

"Oi, aren't you a knight? Or did you steal that armour? Don'tcha know how valuable parts of a Hollow are? The skulls are full of souls and the hands are cursed. Have a guess!"

You stare at her, somewhat surprised. "You… cut up Hollows?"

She scoffs and folds her arms as if stating the obvious. "Well of course I do! Where else do you think all this junk comes from? So many of those brainless husks try to get their hands on me that it'd be a crime not to get something in return! Too grabby for me, though." She leans forward on the bars again and gives you a creepy smile. "Not like you, though, dearie. You're nice and are going to buy some of my moss, right?"

You shift uncomfortably, looking to Oscar for help. "Uh, I guess… W-What does it do?"

"Hmm? The moss?" She asks, looking genuinely confused. "Bah, don't you even know what moss is for?" She reaches into her sack at takes out a few handfuls of moss clumps. "They're medical, don'cha know? Red for bleeding, purple for poisons. The ones with the little flowers are better. Now, come on. Buy some moss!"

You glance at Oscar. "Do you think they actually work?"

"Many plants have medicinal properties." He replies with a shrug. "This seems to be a similar type to the one growing in Darkroot Garden."

"So… how does it work, then?" You ask, turning back to the woman with a grim expression. "Do we rub it on the wound or…?"

"Well, you eat it of course!" She squarks. "Just put a nice juicy clump in your mouth and you'll start feeling better in no time!"

You shudder at the thought, but Oscar slowly nods. "I see. Then in that case, we'll buy a few clumps, as well as two of your bones." He shrugs when you raise an eyebrow at him. "What? We're most likely going to have to delve below, so it's best to be prepared."

You shake your head at his annoyingly reasonable logic, but nonetheless step back and let him buy the items.

"Much obliged." The undead woman chuckles as she hands over the moss and bones. "Come again, if you please. Hehehehehe!"

"So, where to now?" Oscar asks as you split the new items between the two of you. "The path into the sewers unfortunately seems to be our best bet at locating the bell, however this tunnel is somewhat familiar. It may be connected back to Firelink."

So now we face a question: head back towards Oswald and pick up the remaining purging stones or head straight into the sewers.

As has already been said, we've already got two on us and we've not used up all that much magic despite all the stuff we've done so we could quite plausibly be okay. On the other hand... well, I seem to recall the sewers giving me no small amount of grief in places. And, y'know: the Basilisks.

I generally agree, as long as you pay attention, don't screw around, and stay mobile, they're pretty easy to kill.

But, well: We're using purging stones to absorb Grief, curses are also absorbed with purging stones. So logically, Grief == Curse. And while you may have to stand in those clouds for a while to actually get cursed, the build-up starts nigh-instantaneously...

Maybe I'm being paranoid again, but i get the feeling that they might be just a little more dangerous to us (and our magic supply) than any (non-Meguka) dark souls protagonist.

By that logic shouldn't getting the resist curse spell essentially give us free reign to spam magic because it completely resets curse build up without any cost (despite its description stating otherwise)? Come to think of it none of the 'meguka in souls series' quest have ever gotten far enough to reach Ingward to my memory. Its probably better off if petrification and curse are kept as separate statuses like they were in DS2.

Maybe, maybe not. I can't say I know how that would be mechanically implemented in this quest but letting us refresh out magic like that would be pretty poor design. At best I would assume it to reduce Grief accumulation, I'll say that. My concern is more the possibility of that correlation and how much of a problem it could be if we're not careful enough.

We don't lose anything from being more careful around the things that apply curse anyway, right?

Its probably better off if petrification and curse are kept as separate statuses like they were in DS2.
I'd agree with that, yeah.

When you realize nobody actually remembered to vote. Whoops.

Anyways I'm going with back to Firelink, because potential quick R&R, we did rescue Griggs so this might open up sorceries, and it gives us the option of detouring to Oswald to increase our purging stone count.
