Part 59: Firelink Shrine VII
[X] Head back to Firelink Shrine

"Let's take a look, then. You could use the rest." You say with a shrug, stepping further into the darkness of the dank tunnel.

The tight, wet and rankly smelling passage goes on for longer than you would've liked. The water, while surprisingly clear and clean-looking, comes up above your foot and occasionally splashes inside your boots. This tunnel may not be a sewer, but it's definitely still unpleasant enough that you aren't fussed on it.

Eventually, you run into a gated grate blocking the path. Further beyond, you can just faintly make out sunlight seeping in through a side passage. The gate is so stiff and rusted that it won't budge, so you bust it down with a few sturdy kicks. The clattering as it hits the ground echoes nicely in the tunnel and you don't hear any unfriendly sounding responses echoing back.

Not long after you pass through the now-gateless grate, you pass a familiar path to the right. It leads to some stairs and you realise it's the way up to the Undead burg. If your findings are correct, that means the light ahead is the way back to Firelink.

You find that you were correct as you step out of the next side exit and out onto the small stone outcrop looking over Firelink Shrine. You had forgotten about the hollows around here, though.

One of said hollows standing on the stairs leading down to the cliff path turns in surprise at your sudden appearance behind him. You respond far quicker than he does, kicking out his leg and pushing him off the edge.

You run into three more hollows as you make your way down to and around the cliffside path to the shrine. You and Oscar make short work of them, by now entirely capable of dealing with a few hollows, but as you do so, you notice something bronze-gold shining at the far edge of the shrine beneath the bonfire.

"Hey, is that the guy we broke out of prison in the cathedral?" You ask, pointing out the armoured figure glinting in the faint sunlight. "Lawrence or something, right?"

"I believe it was Lautrec." Oscar replies. "I suppose it makes sense he ended up here, considering the state of the rest of the city."

"Well, let's go say hello, then. He did help up with the gargoyles, after all."

Oscar starts saying something, but you step away before you can make it out. You intend on going all the way down to visit Lautrec, but stop when you reach the shrine.

"Oh, hello." Says the man standing in a little grassy area beside the steps into the shrine. "Terrific to see us both in one piece."

You stare at Griggs for a moment, trying to process his appearance here. Oscar voices your thoughts for you.

"You made it here quite quickly." He says, subtly placing his hand on his sword. "There were many hollows along the path here."

The sorcerer smiles faintly at the implied question. "I am well versed in the arts of secrecy, Sir Knight, and the hollows are not the smartest of creatures."

Oscar goes quiet at this, merely eyeing Griggs silently. He doesn't remove his hand from his sword.

Griggs clears his throat and turns his attention to you, his faint smile still present despite the tension clear in Oscar. "Now, I did promise something in return for saving me from that… compromising situation in the Lower Burg. Unfortunately, I can only offer you some sorceries. You're clearly not educated in the ways of soul arts… ah, and yet…" He mumbles, rubbing his chin with a frown. "I do sense something from you. You hold a unique power within you, one I have never witnessed before."

For a moment, you can't even begin to wonder what he could mean. Then you remember your soul gem. You reach back and detach it, eyeing the faintly glowing stone interjected by the occasional black wisps of corruption. It's made from your soul, and you draw your magic from it, so…

"Goodness, what is that gem?" Griggs exclaims, showing genuine surprise on his face. "It radiates with magical energy! Is this the source of your peculiar aura? How did you obtain such a fascinating thing?"

"Uh, it's a long story…" You reply, morphing the soul gem into its true egg-like shape. "Does this mean I can learn magic? Like, fancy pew pew magic?"

Griggs cringes slightly at the last bit, but nods nonetheless. "I do believe you could use at least the most elementary spells, despite no formal education in the matter. Such spells would be a good place to start anyway, and I would like to see how some basic instruction in soul arts is translated through this gem of yours."

Oscar takes you by the arm and pulls you a few steps away, leaning in close. "Kirika, this fellow is dubious at best, with rumours aplenty surrounding his homeland. Be cautious."

How much of a boost do we actually get? Because with out current stats Kirika doesn't actually have a high enough INT to even learn the spells with the lowest required INT. Oscar however qualifies for at least 4 spells 3 of which are for sale here.

you can currently learn the most basic spells (INT 10 requirement) but nothing else.

Is any of those spells worth it?
I am really leery of anyone in this world touching her soul gem, maybe one spell is enough?
I mean learning more spells could give him a better understanding of our soul gem, enough that he's willing to do stupid things to get it or make some dangerous ones of his own as extremely unlikely that is given the current state of the land.

In the end magical girls soul gems belongs to Madoka!

The only 10 INT spells are the most basic form of soul arrow which is a weak ranged magic attack, Aural Decoy which is a very short term enemy distraction spell that has never been all that useful in my personal experiences with it, Magic Weapon is a weak weapon buff, and Magic Shield is a weak shield buff. We might get some use out of Magic Weapon but I can't see us making much use of the rest.

the real question then, is how much grief these spells will cost, and how that compares to the things already in her arsenal. and i suppose there's only one way to find that out... which spell should we get? the claws are probably magic/physical, since they are made with soulgem magic. if the casts were limited per rest, then soul weapon would only be useful if kirika keeps a weapon to hand, like a set of claws that dont get thrown or a side arm. kirika also does not seem keen on blocking, she seems much more into dodging. so magic shield wouldnt really get used by her, but if its bought for oscar, hed get use out of it, and kirika could borrow it to test casting costs. if soul arrows are free, they are useful, otherwise, not so much.

shes not at an amour merchant right now. but kirika, despite being magic, has proveb ti be rather squishy. she should get some kit. i dont think shed loose agility because of the magical girl buffs to strength and stamina. irl, armour doesnt slow you down, it just makes you more tired from carrying the wieght around. (providing you have the baseline strength to carry the wieght)

Indeed, so that makes it a question worth asking:

@AClassyBunny are Kirika's claws magic damage, physical damage, or split between the two?
The damage is split between both magic and physical, since they're more solid energy than normal blades. The damage isn't two low splits like hybrid when usually are in Dark Souls, but enemy resistances will be taken into account (at least the logical ones.)

Resins will work on the claws, although dispelling them will remove the buff, and you obviously can't add extra magic onto them.

Alright the magic available is basically useless to us and while Oscar could learn a spell he has higher Faith than INT. Petrus should be nearby and he sells a few miracles Oscar has enough faith to use namely Force, Heal, Seek Guidance (though this would probably be useless), and Great Heal Excerpt.

We should probably actually vote on something before the vote comes to a close

I want to see about getting Oscar a healing miracle of some kind given the next area we are supposed to go is the sewers followed by the poison swamp area. Also anyone else find it strange that the magic in DS1 for curing status effects (Remedy and Resist Curse) come from sorceries instead of miracles?

Honestly? It's a cheap buy, and I want to at least see how magic functions for Kirika and if it might be worth investing in say a Dex/Int build, considering her claws apparently already do magic damage. If it works out, great, if not, no big loss.

As for Petrus, while healing miracles for Oscar are tbh super expensive from him it's not like there's any other option until way later with Reah. Not to mention, post-Capra is when Reah and her crew first show up iirc so hey, the opportunity for Kirika to make even more bad first impressions is something we shouldn't skip.

It might be of questionable use for us, generally, but... well, knowledge is power. Plus 1,500 souls isn't really that much in the grand scheme, I'd call it an amount we could make back without too much effort, just squish a few hollows here and there... but I digress.

That said I'm betting we pay the casting price in grief, which would probably make it impractical to use in general.

Part 60: Firelink Shrine VIII
[X] Rest at the bonfire
-[X] Go see Petrus afterward

You stare blankly at Oscar for a moment, still not at all understanding his suspicions of this magic man. He seems to notice your lack of understanding and points down at the soul gem in your hand.

"You said something about your soul being in that thing, yes? Are you sure it's such a good idea to let some shady fellow do experiments on it?"

You shudder at the memory of the last time someone got their hands on your soul. Well, bullets. Ball? Explosion? Whatever, either way, it wasn't pleasant and you wince when you think about it being the start of Oriko's plans unravelling. You look down at your soul gem, faint glow interrupted by occasional wisps of black, and frown.

"Sorry, uh… Griggs, right?" You say, leaning back out of your huddle with Oscar and turning to the sorcerer. You dispel your soul gem in a flash, returning it to its place on your back. "But the soul gem's a no-touch thing."

You notice a strange sharpness in his eyes as he remains silent, his lips pressed thin. For a brief moment, you spot a tenseness in his body like a hunting monster contemplating whether to go for the kill. You remember the feeling vividly.

Griggs seems to notice your recognition, or perhaps he only saw your sudden alertness. Whatever the case, his tension vanishes and he smiles wryly as if it was never there to begin with. "A shame, but I will not force you." He clears his throat and half turns. "Well, if there's nothing else, I have some matters to attention to."

"We will leave you to that, then." Oscar says with a flat tone, giving the sorcerer a small nod. He turns and makes his way through the arch towards the bonfire without another word. You follow behind him, noticing Griggs watching you go with a dark look out of the corner of your eye.

It's not until the two of you have sat down at the bonfire, the embers curling around you and filling you with a gentle warmth, that Oscar speaks again. "You were right to withhold your treasure. Well done."

You grimace, torn between being happy for praise and annoyance for being treated like a child. You go with annoyance and shoot him a nasty look. "Hey, I'm not some idiot kid, you know! Don't treat me like a sheltered brat."

"I've become well aware that you're more than you appear." Oscar replies in a strange tone, shifting awkwardly. "But, if I may, you seem to have a habit of… impulsive randomness. Sometimes you seem cheerfully innocent, and the next minute you're enthusiastically gutting a foe like a butcher. If I hadn't pieced together some of your past hardships from what little you've said of your past, I'd say you were…"

Mad.

Weird.

Creepy.

A freak.

Oscar trails off, but you don't need to hear it to know what he's thinking. You've heard it enough to know others find you unsettling to be around. Your wish helped you hide it, helped you make 'friends' with your classmates, but you never really fit in with others. No one but Oriko.

You snarl and get to your feet with a "humph!"

"Apologies." Oscar says quickly, standing as well. "I meant no offence. Hardship affects people no matter their rank, and it seems that you have endured plenty."

You ignore him, storming off in a random direction. You hear the snickering scoff of Mr Moody at this, which only agitates you further.

Damn it, what does Oscar know about what you've been through? You sold your soul for Oriko, moulded yourself to fit her needs. Drowned yourself in blood so she could remain clean. You've even died for Oriko, twice in a way, if you count becoming a witch. What does some stupid fancy knight know about…?

You pause. You hadn't really paid much attention to where you were headed, but it seems you've wandered into a party of sorts. The little room Petrus was hiding in, which you've walked right into, now has three new occupants. Two are dressed in the same overly bulky armour that baldy wears and carrying weapons and shields, while the third looks to be a thin, frail lady in pale robes.

"My guests have arrived, it seems." You hear Petrus say to your left. You turn to see the chubby-looking man watching you with an almost belittling smile. "We'll soon be departing, so I'm afraid the chance to share miracles will soon be at an end."

"Kirika-"

You make a face as Oscar comes up behind you. You half-turn to wave him towards Petrus. "Go listen to some fairy tales or something. I don't wanna talk to you right now."

You turn back and walk up to the new arrivals without paying him any more mind. Maybe you're being unreasonable, sulking like some stupid brat. You don't care. As you said: you don't want to talk to Oscar at the moment.

"Hm? What have we here?" The big knight – er, cleric? Paladin? – with a blonde bowl cut says as you approach. "What business have you?"

"Hey, church man." You reply with a half-hearted wave. "You as snobby as Petrus?"

The man seems taken aback for a moment, but recovers quickly enough. "I'm not so sure such thing is appropriate, but… I do admit there's something off about the captain… Ahm, excuse me. I… hope not?"

Well, at least he seems normal enough. You can handle normal better than creepy or obnoxious. "So, uh… who are you? You weren't here earlier today."

"Ah, I am Vince of Thorolund, and my compatriot's name is Nico." He says, nodding to the other guard, who shoots you a glance at the mention of his name. "We are accompanying M'lady on her righteous mission, and are merely stopping here on our way into the Catacombs."

"The Catacombs, huh…? Is that the graveyard behind the shrine?" You ask, head tilted slightly.

"Indeed. Well, somewhat. That dark and damnable place lays beyond the graveyard." He replies, making a face. "Not the nicest of places, but what can one do? We'll follow M'lady wherever we must."

"Right… so, uh, what IS your 'mission'?" You ask, leaning around him to look at the lady knelt in prayer behind him. "What's some frail little lady like her supposed to do in a grave? Scare away spirits with pray or something?"

Vince frowns at your words. "We're searching for a rite of kindling. Beyond that, you would have to speak to either the captain or M'lady herself."

"I can talk to her? Isn't she, uh… praying?"

Vince shrugs. "It is almost time to depart anyway. I was going to rouse her soon, but you can speak to her if you wish." He pauses before adding. "Ah, but be on your best behaviour. She may no longer be of nobility, but use your manners."

"Uh, of course…." You say, sidestepping the man in oversized armour. You know how to talk to rich people, right? You've spent all that time with Oriko, after all. Wait, but you always just acted normally around her…

You're drawn out of your musings by a quiet "Hmm?" and see the lady has paused her prayer to look back at you. She smiles when she sees you stop and gently climbs to her feet. "Ah, you are Undead as well, perhaps? I believe no one else lingers in this place, after all."

"Uh, kinda. It's a long story." You mumble, suddenly realising you have no idea how to speak to a priestess. You realise now, upon seeing her face, that she's more of a girl. Sure, she's definitely older than you are, but too young to be considered an adult.

The young priestess smiles softly. "Then I'm afraid we have no time to fraternize. I have my mission and you no doubt have yours." She places a hand to her chest. "We must not let this curse overcome us."

Curse, huh? You know she's talking about the Undead Curse, or whatever Oscar called it, but you can't help but feel aware of your soul gem on your back.

I get the feeling we might want to watch our back around Griggs. Certain item descriptions paint Vinheim as being pretty damn sketchy like Hush mentioning dark secrets and the ds3 descriptions of the slumbering dragoncrest ring calling out the school having many assassins at their disposal. The fact they don't screw over the chosen undead in game doesn't necessarily mean they're trustworthy people.

the soul gem might just be too alluring to pass up, wonder how big hat will react?
Given how he wants the paledrakes stuff and Seath has a magic crystal he'll probably try to steal our magic crystal so he can have his own. The only magic trainers we can probably trust are Dusk and Rickert, and the only reason I'm willing to trust Rickert is because he is trapped in a jail cell where he can't pull a fast one on us and he seems content to stay there. Actually come to think of it Rickert is the smith that deals in magic weapons so he might be able to do something interesting with our claws at some point if we ever bring the magic embers down to him.

well theres also that that rickert isnt from the spy faction of the school (which the other guy i think is implied to be) logan i could see going eitherway.

theyve already fought moonlight butterfly, so in game theyd be locked out of seeing beatrice. in quest her sign or even herself could show up anywhere.

pyromancy people wont want to mess with her soul gem also.

Maybe we should have add 'kill him just in case' to that vote, oh well guess we will kill him later painfully.
Quite glad we did not hand over the soul gem looking at his reaction.
